Reversed
Hey! Guess who's updating! I'll give you a hint: It's me. Okay, so that last chapter was short, and had a cliffy. Now, I'm back, and you'll see just who found out about Chirsabeth's fake relationship. Yay! I hope everyone's ready for this. Thank you to my betas.
Disclaimer: If I have to go over this every chapter, I'm going to die. My name is not Rick Riordan. I do not own Percy Jackson and the Olympians… Although, I do own this story. But it's just not the same.
Recap
Suddenly, a shadow stepped from behind one of the dummies. I jumped up, wondering who or what it could be.
"So Chris and you aren't dating? That's news to me," the person said, stepping into view. And you would never believe who I came face to face with in the arena.
"Oh. It's you," I said.
Annabeth's P.O.V.
Jasmine studied me, and her green eyes held a hint of mischief. She approached me slowly as if she were afraid I would attack.
"Why were you following me, Jasmine?" I asked wearily, not up for an argument with my stubborn sister.
"Well, you're not a morning person. I just had to see what possessed you to wake up at six in the morning. It was a last minute decision, so I lost you for the first half. But then… I found out the real reason you were up."
I sighed. I should have known better than to wake Jasmine up at six. She was very curious. I know better than to sneak around when Jasmine's around.
"Well, now you know the truth. It was- I mean it is a fake relationship."
I sat down on one of the benches near by. I was tired, hungry and confused. Now add a little sister who wants to know exactly what happened, and you have the perfect morning.
Jasmine sat down beside me. We sat in silence for a few moments, each to busy gathering our thoughts to try and make a conversation with the other. Finally, after what seemed like hours, Jasmine turned to me and asked, "You don't seem so sure of who you're dating. I think Chris really likes you. Maybe you really like him."
Snapping out of my trance, I turned to her. What she had said made since. Chris really liked me. I liked him, but as only a bit more than a friend. I didn't see myself going anywhere with Chris, however. I could always learn to love him. We were only seventeen. We had time. Well, as much time as demi-gods had.
"That's the problem. Percy sort of uh, he kind of um maybe might have kissed me today," I mumbled with my head down.
Jasmine gasped and stared at me with wide eyes. Of course. Percy Jackson, the same boy who was always seen hanging around Clarisse, had kissed his best friend. Percy was extremely smart, but he was also proud. He'd never go off and act like other boys. No, Percy was known for being extremely loyal to his girlfriend.
"No. Flipping. Way!" Jasmine exclaimed.
"Do you think I'm lying, Jasmine," I asked, exasperated. Was she calling me a liar?
"No. I just can't believe… High and mighty Percy Jackson kissed another girl! Oh my gosh! The twins and Ruby are going to flip when they hear this! I can't wait to tell them!" Jasmine shouted, hopping up and starting towards the cabins. I grabbed her arm, pulling her back.
"No. You can't tell anyone. No one is supposed to know. Do you hear me, Jas? You can't tell the twins, you can't tell Ruby. If Lord Zeus himself comes to you and asks, deny it," I said frantically, knowing that the younger campers had a tendency to gossip. If Jasmine told anyone, the whole camp would know by tonight. My whole plan would be ruined, and I'd have to go live at the bottom of the ocean.
Jasmine blinked a couple of times, like I was waking her up from a dream. She gazed at me with a look of desperate concentration, as if she was trying to fit together mismatched puzzle pieces.
"But… why?" Jasmine asked after a moment.
"Because… it's a long story," I warned, knowing that if Jasmine didn't have breakfast, she would be irritable until lunch. Jasmine, however, seemed to forget this and motioned for me to go on.
Taking in a deep breath, I launched into the story about into the story, beginning with Chris confronting me about my feelings for Percy. For once in her life, Jasmine didn't interrupt the story with a question or sarcastic remark. This day was becoming very strange.
"And so now we're here," I sum up, taking in a deep breath. Now, both Grover and Jasmine knew. Hopefully, none of Chris's friends know.
"That's quite a story you got there," Jasmine said, and I'm pretty sure she was still trying to process everything.
"You have to swear on the River Styx that you won't tell anyone! Swear it."
"Fine, fine. I swear on the River Styx that the information about you and Chris won't get out to anyone." Cue the dramatic thunder.
We sat there in silence for a while. Then, campers began pouring in, and I knew that we had missed breakfast.
"This is my sword class. So, see you later," Jasmine said and then ran over to her friends. I stood up slowly, observing how my little sister interacted with people. I saw her say something, and it was followed by laughter. It amazed me at how different we were.
Even though I knew a lot of people, it was mostly do to that stupid prophecy, and me being a daughter of Poseidon. Other than that, I might not be as "popular" as I am right now.
Jasmine, on the other hand, had lots of friends. It didn't matter who her godly parent was-she was naturally a people person. Everyone was constantly laughing whenever they were around her. Not that she didn't have enemies. There were quite a few people who disliked the bluntness that was a key part of Jasmine's personality.
I stood and slowly made my way out of the arena. I watched as Audrey and Ahlen stood up, each barring their weapons. Ahlen held a sword in one hand, and a shield in the other. Audrey, on the other hand, held an identical pair of fighting knives, and didn't have a shield. I knew why. Audrey always moved more quickly when a shield didn't weigh her down. After all, it was no secret that the Smith Girls' were small.
I kept walking out of the arena, until I saw Chris walking my way, searching for someone. Who is he- Oh. Right. Me.
Quickly, I jumped behind a row of dummies, and hoped Chris wouldn't see me. I didn't really want to talk to him right now. I needed some time to think about it.
Chris frantically searched, and then walked over to the group, who were watching Audrey and Ahlen intensely. As they fought, the instructor was telling everyone to take note of what the twins were doing.
"Look! See her stance? That's almost exactly like Silena's! Beautiful!" the instructor called out, pointing towards Ahlen. As she was about to strike, Chris walked over.
"Hey, has anyone seen Annabeth? I was… looking… for…" he let his sentence trail off as everyone stared at him.
The girl's had hungry looks in their eyes as they stared at Chris. Who wouldn't? He was just that good looking. But that doesn't matter! Who are they to look at my boyfriend like tha- I mean, my "boyfriend" like that?
"Well, if it isn't Chris Rodriguez. Looking for little Annabeth, are you? Well, she isn't here," the instructor said, and his voice gave me chills. Not Kronos-talking-to-me-from-the-depths-of-Tartarus chills. No, these were I-know-that-voice-and-it's-someone-I-don't-want-to-run-into chills. I knew the instructor, but I couldn't place the voice. I hadn't talked to whoever it was in a while if I couldn't think of them.
I saw Chris give the person a cold look. For the son of Apollo, he sure was good at giving ice-cold stares.
"Oh, it's you. Well, I know she wouldn't be-" Chris was saying, but the instructor stopped him mid-sentence. He looked at his class and said, "Did I tell you to stop fighting? Everyone else, watch them, and then I want you to tell me what they did well and what they didn't. Oh, and don't make it up. I'm watching."
He began told Chris to come with him, and they walked towards the dummies. And who was hiding in the dummies? Oh, that's right. They stopped a good seven feet from me. If one of them looked over this way long enough, they would see me.
"Alright look Rodriguez-" the guy was saying. I couldn't see his face, but his voice gave away that I knew him. I just couldn't put my finger on it.
"I don't see what you need to talk to me about. I leave you alone, so what do you want," Chris said impatiently, tapping his foot.
"If you would listen, this conversation would be half way over by now. As I was saying, I heard you were dating Chase. I want to let you know, treat her right or-" the guy was cut off, because just then, my amazing coordination kicked in and I fell over.
The dummies in front of me toppled over. Chris and the guy jumped, swords at the ready. I stood slowly, embarrassed that I had been caught. I slowly lifted my head and stared at Chris and the instructor. Except, the instructor was-
"Luke!" I yelled in surprise, my jaw dropping. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Chris frown at not being acknowledged, but at this point, I was too surprised to care.
"Annabeth. What are you doing here?" Chris asked, probably just trying to get me to notice him.
"Luke, you're Jasmine's instructor? What? You hate sword fighting," I said, ignoring Chris and further agitating him.
"Well, yeah. I was hoping I could talk to you one day, if you ever came by," Luke said, looking embarrassed.
"What did you want to talk to me about? Were you going to explain why you're such a jerk?" I knew I shouldn't anger him, especially since he was willing to talk, but I couldn't help it. I didn't know how angry I was at him abandoning me until now.
Luke stared at me, clearly confused by my outburst. He looked down at his hands before looking back up. There was something in his eyes, something I've never seen. It was gone a second later, and I was sure I had imagined it.
"Can we talk in private? I really need to speak with you," Luke pleaded. By the look of it, he had something important to say. But before I could reply, Chris cut in.
"Hello? Am I still standing here? What's going on?"
"Nothing that concerns you, Rodriguez," Luke said absently, glancing at Chris before looking back at me.
Chris was miffed, or course. He was used to being in on everything. His face flushed, and he looked at Luke as if he were a dummy.
"It very well does concern me! How do I know you're not making a move on my girlfriend? How do I know-" Luke cut Chris off before he could finish.
"Of course," Luke said dryly, "because minors are just so irresistible."
Clearly, Chris was not counting on a retort, because he didn't say anything else about it. Luke turned back towards me, and I saw that something in his eyes. This time it stayed a bit longer. Then it was gone again.
"You know what? Nevermind, Chase. You should really think about who you keep close to you." And with that, he walked away, barking more orders at his sword class.
I turned to Chris angrily.
"He had something to tell me! Why were you so rude?"
Chris looked taken aback, apparently not expecting me to have actually wanted to talk to Luke.
"Hey, who knows what that guy was up to? I saw him eyeing you," Chris replied defensively. I threw my hands up in exasperation. That was the last straw.
"Look, Rodriguez. This relationship is fake. Always has been, always will be. We are not a thing. You are not actually my boyfriend. So stop treating me like I'm going to run off with every guy I see! Worry about your mission to win Clarisse over, not about me talking to Luke!" I whispered furiously, letting my anger get the best of me.
Chris stood there for a minute, surprised by my outburst. He just gaped at me, looking hurt. Then, wordlessly, he turned and walked out.
I leaned against a dummy, using it for support. What have I done? My only way to get to Percy may never speak to me. But it was more than that.
Yelling at Chris didn't make me feel good. It made me feel sort of… broken. Like I had done something, and only he would be able to fix it.
No, I told myself. Annabeth, you like Percy. Percy is the mission. Percy, Percy, Percy. You only have eyes for Percy.
Or… did I?
So… I left another Cliffy. Favorite, follow and all that jazz. And don't forget. Vote! Chrisabeth or Percabeth?
