"Most selkies are childlike because of their innocence. To a selkie the world is one of endless wonder and concepts like deceit or manipulation are lost on them. They are trusting creatures and if there is no danger nearby they are almost always playing. It is only the highly civilized sealites that lack this innocent wonder because they understand how to manipulate and they understand what it is to lie."
They had agreed that telling others would not be a good idea because they liked going to the water rock. Besides that, the four-finned they saw did not have the kelp-tangle-weeds or the shark-toothed-long-birds-rocks-that-flew that were considered dangerous. So they hadn't seen any danger to keeping it secret. The few times they had peeked out of the dark waters to see if he'd gone only proved that there was no danger because they couldn't see him.
So they relaxed and carefully swam back to the others, working slowly so as not to get lost in the high tides. Finally they flopped to shore towards the others and cuddled together for warmth and safety. That four-finned was so different to her. She had never seen one with red eyes before, and his scent was so different. Her mind raced with questions and it was quite a while before she was able to sleep. The others slept well, nearly forgetting. The others had dismissed it in their minds. After all, it couldn't effect them. Seras was the only one who would really remember come morning.

The lights refracted through the waters made their pelts shimmer and the dance beautiful as they spun and swam past each other. They sung to each other with their yips and warbled barks. She angled her flippers up, using her tail to speed up so that she burst from the water, flopped down and sank back to the others. She tipped watching Breem rise up and do the same. It was simple and nice. They were playing. There were no sharks or young pups around to worry about. It was just them and the water. Eventually they had become too tired to continue though, so they slowly swam back to the beach. The waters were nice and warm lately and suddenly it occurred to her that whale season was coming. She remembered Kuins public display of intent pensively.
She was torn. She really didn't know what to do. She really didn't know if she was ready to become a mother. Yet Kuin was only wanting her during whale season. Everyone seemed to think she should but wasn't certain it was her time for that. Kuin was nice enough she supposed but she just didn't know what to do. Her focus shifted back to her swimming when she felt the surf get rougher as she neared the shore. She swam faster to compensate for the rising and falling waters that would threaten to throw her if she wasn't careful. She felt her chest touch the sands and she wriggled and flopped forward as water crashed down on her covering her head for a scant few seconds. Finally wriggling free of the water she moved forward to join the others. She curled up against the swell of bodies around her trying to get sun. Some sleep would be nice. She closed her eyes in the warm afternoon sun and slept.

You guys ever see "The Gods Must Be Crazy!" the first movie? In the first movie they show the bush people and give you an understanding of their culture and natural behavior. To me, selkies are somewhat like the bush people. They have no sense of ownership, no violence, and no deceit. They are sweet and playful when there aren't any predators around. They are cooperative with each other because they just want to help, and they have no reason to resist which is why disrespect is also not something they understand. How do I explain this adequately? How do I explain to you a culture of people so alien to us of a material world?
If they have no manners then they do not know what being rude or disrespectful is. If they do not have materials or things that they can 'own' or call 'mine' then they have no greed or sense of ownership. What CAN they own anyways? They have no houses, clothes or things that can be 'stolen'. The only things they own are the pelts on their backs which they almost never take off. They do not understand ulterior motives and therefore they have no deceit.

Sometimes Seras just liked going off on her own around the beach. She did like her friends but time to just lay and appreciate solitude was wonderful. There was this little cove nearby with a natural cave that was wonderful during low tide. She listened to to sound of the water rumbling against the rocks. Just when she was lowering her head for a nap her head perked up at the noise. That smell... She tensed seeing the four-finned from the night before there in front of her. He stood at the mouth of the cave, effectively boxing her in. Frightened and determined to protect herself she reared back trying to make herself taller and her pelt rippled as she barked warningly. Yet a voice sounded in her mind, confusing her greatly.
I will not hurt you.
There was a great amount of confusion until her limited knowledge of the world erroneously made the only conclusion possible to her. He was a selkie. But how was he able to speak-mind-heart in four-fin form? Still cautious of the danger she lowered herself down but remained on guard. She spoke then hesitantly.
You one us?
There was a strange look on his face that Seras could not understand before he answered.
Yes.
I never see you before. From different tribe? Why look like four-fin? Where your pelt?
Curiosity was slowly making her guard drop. He didn't seem so dangerous. He still smelled wrong though.
I have no tribe so I travel as a human. It is safer.
Confused by his strange speech patterns it took her a moment to understand the sentence. Still there were some things she didn't understand.
Oh. What hum-aan?
Human is my word for four-finned.
You no call them four-fin? They hume-an. How strange. After a moment of thought the curiosity was beginning to become unbearable to Seras's childlike mind. Why you wear not-pelts?
There was a strange twisting of his face where a unusual stripe of black fur above his eye raised. Seras was largely unfamiliar with human facial features and their functions. Seals had fewer expressions to chose from.
Not-pelts? He asked and then after looking down at himself he made this strange barking noise that reminded her of Oher. You mean clothing?
A second new word for her to learn! Clo-thing? Not-pelts are clothing? Again his face twisted but this time something with his mouth. It made her nervous but she found herself transfixed by the strange selkie before her. Another idea came to her though. It fun being hu-man? To wear cloth-ing?
Again that strange twisting on his face happened. Yes, it occasionally is. Would you like to try?
After a moment of trying to understand she comprehended his meaning. There was a terrible feeling welling up inside her at the idea as she remembered her greatest desire to see stars up close. The idea raised a dreadful fear that left her trembling also.
Hu-man dangerous though. They kill Grot. Kill Hruoh.
They do not pose a threat when they think you are a human. Also, I will not let you be harmed. I promise.
She hesitated, not knowing if she could trust him, but also knowing this might be her only chance to see humans up close without harm. After a moment she decided and felt her head slide free from her pelt as the rest of her body slid free from its mouth clumsily. She remembered how to move like last time and struggled to duplicate the motions. She took the not-tentacles and wriggled them until they were flat under her and pushed... only to again roll sideways.
"Hu-man bodies awful. They no work."
There was that barking noise that she took to be laughter and then he leaned down and held out his not-tentacle for her to grab. With her not-tentacle she clumsily reached out and worked the unfamiliar concept of fingers grasping something. After some help she was standing up unsteadily. However she was unprepared for the reaction of the male selkie to her human form. He was looking her up and down with this strange expression on his face she didn't quite like. It made her rather nervous. She took a unsteady step forward and began exploring her body and its abilities.
The not-tentacles she found could help her move if she put one in front of the other. After some work she discovered how to turn around. She wanted to learn another word too.
"Whah-at these called?" She asked holding out a arm and a leg.
"Arms and legs." He kept making that strange expression when he looked at her. She supposed it was a normal hume-an expression and was learning to ignore it.
"These?"
"Fingers."
"These?"
That twisting of his lower face happened again. "Breasts."
"Oh. I want see what hu-man like." She picked up her pelt and carefully buried it under the sand before walking to the edge of the cave when she was stopped. The strange selkie had used his fing-ers to grab her arm.
"Not yet. You need to get dressed."
After a moment of thought she put it together, and after another working her mouth. "Oh! You want me on clo-thing!"
She watched in confusion as there was a sort of darkness that swirled like water and grew into a large clo-thing she had seen some hu-mans wear. She took the thing he held, the color reminded her of dark ocean nights. She held it up curiously and held it to her torso expectantly, surprised when it didn't just wrap onto her body like her pelt did. She held it out to him in disappointment.
"It no work. Not my pelt."
Then he did something that gave some confusion to Seras. He bunched up the material and held it out to her, but refused to let go. Curiously she stuck her head in the hole that was available. She yelped when one of her not-tentacles was grabbed and stuck through another hole. She squirmed slightly, trying to get free but he grabbed her other and stuck it on. She looked down in astonishment as the material fell down her body and covered most of her legs. It moved when she did and she moved back and forth, watching it. How strange. She had never seen her pelt do such a thing. Clo-thing was strange. She squirmed somewhat uncomfortably though as it felt too tight on her. She found she really didn't like clo-thing. It wasn't until the man grabbed her dress and yanked on certain areas of the material that she felt better.
"My name is Alucard." He took her hand, led her away and Seras threw one last nervous glance to where she had buried her pelt.
Never did she realize that it would be the last time she would see it for many years...
