With every inch of her body crying out with fatigue, Robin Scorpio stepped off the elevator and headed slowly over to the nurse's station on the ninth floor.
"Hey, you look exhausted." She glanced up to see Elizabeth Webber looking at her in sympathy. "Long surgery, huh?"
Robin nodded. "Six hours. They just finished clearing out the OR."
"Well, are you up to stopping for drinks after work? I'm off in an hour, and it sounds like just what you need."
Robin gave her friend a tired smile but shook her head, picking up her charts. "I appreciate the invite, but I'll pass this time. What I need is an early and long night in my bed."
Liz laughed and handed her some notes. "Well, hurry up and get out of here, you've earned it."
Robin smiled, "Thanks. See ya tomorrow."
"Goodnight."
She turned and walked back towards the elevator to start her final rounds, only to crash into Patrick as he came running off.
"Patrick! What the hell is wrong with you?" she cried in surprise. Her messages went scattering to the ground, but neither of them went to pick them up.
He doubled over, his hands on his knees and gasping for air, "I was looking for you. Your cousin's on her way to the ER." He gasped.
"What? Who?" Her face lost all color. "It's not Maxie, is it?"
Patrick shook his head. "No, it's Georgie. She was attacked earlier in the park tonight. It was just called in."
Robin stared at him in horror. "Oh my God…" Recovering from momentary shock, she sprinted the remaining way to the elevator; frantically jabbing the button until it opened.
"Robin, wait!" Patrick swung his arm up to prevent the doors from closing and jumped in with her. "You know Epiphany won't let you be in the exam room with her."
Robin shook her head stubbornly and punched the button for the ER. "I have to be there, Patrick."
He reached out and pulled her unresisting form against him. "I know."
Robin soaked in the temporary comfort until the elevator doors opened. They ran into the lobby right as paramedics came rushing in.
"Georgie!" Robin gasped when the gurney sped past her.
"Patient is a twenty year old female, suffering from severe hypothermia, a possible concussion and extreme lack of oxygen to the brain! She was found after being strangled, and her heart stopped en route!"
"Put her in exam room five!" Epiphany ordered, already moving from behind the front desk. She sent Nadine after the paramedics and moved to intercept Robin as she ran after the stretcher.
"Dr. Scorpio, you know you can't go in there!"
"Please, Epiphany-"Robin begged.
"Robin, you know you'll have to wait out here." Epiphany said firmly, the use of Robin's name softening her tone. "I'm sorry, we'll give you more information when we can," she added, before following Nadine.
Frustrated, Robin ran a hand through her hair and began pacing next to the nurses' desk.
"It'll be alright, Robin," Patrick said next to her. She jumped, not having heard come up from behind her.
"How do you know?" she snapped, moving away from him.
In all the time she had known him, this was the first moment Robin saw Patrick with a look that clearly said he didn't have an answer.
"I don't." He answered finally. "But I have a feeling it will be. I'll go see what I can find about Georgie for you."
Nodding in gratitude, Robin watched him disappear behind the curtain. A lump formed in her throat and forced its way up until her tears eventually fell out of her eyes. She collapsed into a plastic chair and leaned forward; a hand pressed against her mouth tightly to stifle her cries.
"Robin?"
She looked up to see the kind and concerned face of Bobbie staring down at her, "Honey, are you alright?"
Robin furiously wiped her face of any tears. "Yes, I'm fine, Bobbie."
"Then why are you so upset if you're alright?" She placed a hand on her shoulder. The question caused more tears to form, and Robin looked helplessly between the divider and Bobbie. "Georgie was just wheeled into Exam Five with hypothermia and a concussion."
The older nurse's eyes grew wide. "What happened to her?"
Robin shrugged slightly, she wondered if she looked as helpless as she felt. "Patrick told me she was attacked in the park earlier."
"Someone attacked Georgie? Who would do that?!" Bobbie exclaimed, and dropped into the chair next to Robin.
As fresh tears fell, the younger nurse shook her head again, "I don't know, Bobbie."
"Oh, honey. Come here," Her own eyes tearing, Bobbie put her arms around Robin and hugged her tightly. "I'm so sorry. But, you know Georgie; she will not go without a fight." She pulled back from the hug and wiped a few tears off of Robin's cheeks.
Robin gave a slight, watery smile and leaned back into Bobbie's embrace. "I know. But what if she doesn't have a choice?"
Bobbie's arms tightened but she didn't respond.
