Man, I really didn't want to step foot in Mrs. Vendela's room. It was just her vibe that creeped me out. Unfortunately, duty called.
"What'd you want him for?" She sneered at me, obviously very upset that I interrupted her stupid science class.
"I, um, need to discuss something with him." I said, putting my hands in my pockets to avoid fiddling nervously with them. I took a step in, closing the door behind me.
She growled, and it looked like the rest of the class got a little bit scared. I don't blame them, I stepped back from her, too.
"Very well." She said, even though it sounded like she wanted to rip my head off. "Mr. Allen, go."
A kid in the back of the class stood up. I recognized him from my first period class, but too bad I was awful with names. He walked towards the door, and I opened it for him.
"Sorry for interrupting your class, Mrs. Ven-" I started to say.
"Get out." She snarled at me, and I wasn't exactly hesitant to do so.
"What's this about, Mr. A?" The kid, Cory, asked me once we were outside of the room.
"I just had to ask you a question." I said in English, before changing my language to Ancient Greek. "Do you understand me?"
The kid looked puzzled for a second, before nodding slowly, as if he wasn't sure. "Uh, I think so. What was that?"
I sighed, shaking my head and walking him to my room. "That, Cory, was Ancient Greek. I got some pretty crazy news for you, so please just listen to me."
He stared at me, but didn't say a word. I opened the door to my room, and motioned for him to go in. He took a seat in the front row, and I went to my desk.
"You see, Cory." I began. "The Greek gods and goddess, you know them right? Zeus, Poseidon, all those fun thing? Well, they're real." I waited for some kind of gasp from Cory, but he sat there in silence instead. "Anyways, you're one of their children. I know this is a lot to process, but I'm here to help. First of all, I'm a son of Apollo, God of the sun, poetry, medicine, bunch of fun stuff. You, are the son of a god, not a goddess. You have a mother, correct?"
He looked shocked, which was understandable. When my mother told me about this, I refused to leave my room for a few days. But then again, I was eleven. As soon as I agreed to leave my room, she took me to Camp Half-Blood, where I went during summers until I graduated college. I was never a year round camper, because I've always wanted to be a teacher. I knew I had to stay in school for that to happen, so I stuck to it. Why was I a Spanish teacher? Because my mother was 100% Italian, and Spanish is a very close second to that language. My mom always liked to speak Italian around the house, so I took Spanish all my years in high school since they didn't offer Italian. Then, I majored in it in college to go along with my New York State teaching certificate. It made me jealous of Madison, because she's just worked in the greenhouse since she was 21. It also made me upset, since she only did that to help me pay off my last year of college and any student loans I had. She was the best.
"Don't believe me?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "Did you mom ever mention your father?"
He stayed silent for a few more seconds, before finally answering me. "Not really... She said that he left after she had me.. So I'm not too happy with him."
"Well." I said, clapping my hands together. "Your father didn't mean any disrespect towards you or your mother, he just had godly matters to take care of."
He raised an eyebrow at me, before shaking his head. "Are you sure that you're mentally stable enough to teach kids, Mr. A?"
I rolled my eyes, opening the top draw of my desk. That's where I kept my emergency bow and arrow, just in case of a monster attack. The mortals here would probably just see a bunch of pencils or something, due to the Mist distorting what they see. Exactly why I wanted to show it to him.
I took out the bow, holding it in the air. "What do you see?" I asked him.
"Um.." He raised an eyebrow again. "Why do you have that in school? Isn't that illegal or something...?"
"There we go." I said, slinging it around my back. "If you were a mortal, you wouldn't see a bow. I keep it here for safety purposes."
He still didn't look that convinced, so I walked to the back of the classroom. In this school, every room had a sink, which was perfect for me. I turned on the sink, putting a hand under the water to create a must. I pulled a golden drachma from my pocket, the currency of the gods, and tossed it through, saying, "oh, Iris, goddess of the rainbow, accept my offering. Queens Area Greenhouse, Queens, New York. Madison Jefferson."
Cory just sat there and watched, as Madison's faced appeared in the mist. She wasn't paying attention to it, and instead was making some flowers grow in a little pot.
"Peekaboo." I said with a smirk, seeing her jump in surprise and put her hand over her heart.
"Oh my gods, babe!" She said, breathing heavily. "You almost gave me a heart attack!"
"Sorry, sorry." I said with a laugh. "I just needed you to-"
"Is that your girlfriend?" Cory interrupted from behind me, obviously very confused with what was happening.
"Yes, Cory. This is Madison." I said, and Madison waved at him from the mist. Cory raised his hand, but didn't really wave it. I guess he was just too shocked.
"He looks a lot like you when you were his age!" She said, laughing. "You were so cute!"
I had to admit, he did look like me. He had the same bleach blonde hair that I had back then; some long annoying style that hung over my forehead. Being the son of Apollo, my hair was naturally that light. Since then, Madison introduced me to haircuts and hair gel, so I was able to keep my hair looking the way an adult should. Also, I kept a nice stubble on my face, which was the same color as my hair. Obviously, since Cory was probably only 13 years old, he didn't have stubble.
I nodded in agreement at her. "Anyways, can you like, do your special plant thing for us? He's a demigod, but he doesn't believe me." I asked her with a pleading face.
She looked around to make sure that no one was watching, and held up a flower pot. She put her hand above it, and out of the dirt grew a long, green stem. Once it had reached about seven inches tall, the top bloomed into a purple flower. One of her talents was magically growing things from dirt.
"Thank you, babe." I told her. "Now I don't wanna get you fired. I might be a little late getting home tonight, I love you."
"I love you too, I'll pick up some Chinese food for us tonight. Bye!" She said. I smiled and waved my hand through the mist. Madison disappeared, and I was standing there with Cory.
"She seems nice." He said, still a little bit confused.
I nodded. "Anyways, do you believe me now?"
He thought for a second, before shrugging. "I guess, but what do I do now?"
"Well, you could leave school forever and attend Camp Half-Blood." I said. "That's the only completely safe place for demigods to be. What a lot of kids do is go there for summer camp, and still attend school, but you can stay there year round if you want. Your choice."
He obviously didn't like school. "I'll stay year round." He said quickly, almost not giving me a chance to finish.
"Well that was quick." I said with a laugh. "I'll get a substitute to come in for me for the rest of the day, and I'll drive you over. Introduce you to some people. You'll like it there."
I went to my desk, picking up the school phone to call the principal when my door opened. Standing there was the last person I wanted to see in any situation whatsoever; Mrs. Vendela.
"What's taking so long with my student?" She growled at me, her arms crossed above her chest. She seemed so old and disgusting, so angry and evil; pretty much the polar opposite of me.
"Uh, sorry Mrs. V." I said innocently. "It was just some very important business, but he won't even be your student in a few minutes. Whatever, you won't understand."
"Oh, I think I do understand, Apollo spawn." She snarled at me, and I dropped the phone on my desk in shock. Mrs Vendela a monster? Well, I probably should have seen that one coming. "You think I don't know who you are? You think I don't know who he is? Of course I do! When I found out there were two demigods here, and one of them was a teacher, I posed as one too. I've never worked here before, you only think I did! Now, get ready to die!"
Her hair grew into individual little snakes, all of them hissing at me. Usually, when monsters pose as people, their whole appearance changes. But not Vendela. She looked the exact same, except with snake hair.
"A gorgon?" I said, taking my bow from my back and notching an arrow. "How did I not see this coming? Which one are you? One of the weak ones or the one who's actually threatening? What's her name? Medusa?"
The gorgon seemed visibly pissed off. Medusa had the ability to turn people to stone, so obviously, it wasn't here. I'm guessing she didn't like being called 'weak.'
"I'll teach you, you scum!" She shouted, sprouting wings from her back. "After I kill you, I'll kill the boy! This is gonna be great!"
She used her wings to glide through the air, charging me. "Cory, get down!" I shouted, before letting an arrow fly at her. It would have hit her directly in the face, but she was quick, and moved to the right. It still got her wing, and tore right through it. She screeched in pain, but that didn't stop her from plowing into me and sending my flying against the wall. I hit it with a thud, and collapsed on the ground. I managed to knock another arrow, launching it at her. Again, she turned out of the way, but my goal wasn't to hit her.
"You missed again! Your father would be disappointed!" She started laughing, until I interrupted her with an arrow to the face. My plan was to distract her, and it worked just fine. She exploded into golden dust, and fell into a neat pile on the floor.
"I knew she was evil!" Cory said, sounding more happy than surprised. "But not that evil! Alright, I completely believe you now, take me to this camp."
I nodded and got a sub for my room, cleaning up the mess that the gorgon had made before they sent her in. I gave her a list of what I wanted my students to do, and we left the building.
The drive wasn't very long. For some reason, the traffic in the city wasn't that bad today. Thankfully, no more monsters attacked us on our way, and we reached camp.
In the small parking lot that camp had recently set up, there were only a few cars. But only one caught my eyes. It was the car that I had bought Madison for her 23rd birthday; a red Volvo that was cheaper than I'd like to admit. I smiled to myself, happy to know that she's here.
I guided Cory through camp, pointing out a few significant things to him along to way. Eventually, we reached the Big House, or the head office of camp. I knocked on the door, opening it it peeking my head in. "Hello?"
Inside, the camp councilor, Chiron, was enjoying a nice tea-time with my long time girlfriend, Madison. They laughed and joked around, as Chiron say in his wheelchair form. You see, Chiron was a centaur, but her had a magical wheelchair that helped him confine himself to indoor places.
"Hey, baby!" Madison yelled, seeing me and standing up. She walked towards me, and we kissed quickly, before she looked at me. "I told Chiron why you were coming. I got off work early again, so I figured we could just spend the day together!"
I smiled at the thought of that, before wrapping my arm around her waist and looking at Chiron. "Good to see you, Chiron." I said. "It's been a long time."
"Not too long, thankfully." He said, rolling over to me and shaking my hand. "I assume this is Cory? It's a pleasure to meet you, my boy."
"Uh, hi." Cory said nervously. "You don't look like a centaur..."
I had told Cory a whole bunch of things in the car, including who Chiron was. I was hoping that Chiron wouldn't get offended, and he simply laughed. "No, I don't right now, but you'll see later."
Cory looked confused, but shook it off. "Um, so what's the deal here? Where do I sleep and stuff?"
"Well." Chiron began. "You'll sleep in the Hermes cabin until your godly parent claims you. Hermes is the God of travelers, so it's where we send all of our new demigods-"
Chiron didn't get a chance to finish his sentence as a glowing symbol appeared floating above Cory's head. I focused my eyes to see a miniature sun, and a wave of realization washed over me.
"Called it!" Shouted Madison, patting my chest.
"What?" Cory said, waving above his head to try to get the sun to disappear. "What's happening?"
I smiled and patted Cory on the shoulder. "Well, a few hours ago, you were my student. And now, you're my little brother."
