Lily, Scotty and Harrison sat amiably around a small wooden table, carefully going over the details of each file. Around them sat boxes of case files, each one at least ten years old and unsolved, waiting for someone to solve them and to finally give their loved ones peace of mind.
It was difficult for both Lily and Scotty, working cold cases like they did it was hard to set the files aside when it didn't match the criteria of their search. They'd read the names of the victims, memorized every detail they could, quietly making an oath that one day it would be their turn, and that they would send them home, no matter what.
They sat quietly, each one mulling over their own stack of files, Scotty barely getting though his. He found it difficult to concentrate on every single detail of the cases, so he went for a less time consuming tactic, any case where the victim wasn't female, and the cause of death wasn't strangulation, he set aside, but he had still barely even touched his pile. 'Gee, I wonder why that could be' he silently thought to himself.' Could it have anything to do with Romeo over there making eyes at your partner. ' Glancing back across the table he watched as the detectives mooned over each other like a couple of love-sick teenagers. He felt a small twinge but quickly brushed it aside when he couldn't figure out where it came from.
Silently he laughed, for a moment the thought struck him that the twinge could have been jealousy. Knowing that it was completely preposterous that he could be jealous of detective Harrison, he tried not to think about it, but without fail the thoughts slowly crept back into his mind. Lily wasn't exactly the easiest person to warm up to, she was tough, biting, sarcastic and at times a little bitchy. She was also a hell of detective, one of the best he'd ever worked with, yet she had never warmed up to him like she had apparently warmed up to detective Harrison. Suddenly the twinge was back and it was stronger than the first. Hell he was jealous, but he would never tell her that.
Feeling completely out of his element and a little pissed at the sudden admission, he silently wished the young detective all the luck he could muster up. Getting to know Lily Rush was one thing, staying in her good graces was a completely different story.
Without paying attention he let out a low derisive snort, ' Good luck Harrison, you're gonna need it.' He quietly thought to himself. ' One wrong move and she'll break your nose.'
"Everything okay, Scotty?"
Upon hearing her say his name he looked up to see both of them staring at him,"Huh?"
A knowing smile gracing her lips as she repeated herself," Is everything Okay?"
"Yeah, sure, why wouldn't it be?"
" Oh, I don't know, maybe because you've barely touched your stack of files and you've been reading the same one for the last fifteen minutes. Do you need some help?"She said a little to coolly, for his liking.
"NO!" he practically barked. What, did she think he was incapable of going through a few case files now.
Seeing the change in her demeanor as she slowly rested back against her chair and folded her arms underneath her breasts, detective Harrison slowly came to the conclusion that there was some tension between the two partners. He didn't know what and he certainly didn't care he just wanted to be able to work together to solve this case before another innocent young women died. Playing the part of the mediator he spoke up.
"Look, Scotty, -"
"That's Detective Valens, to you." He said harshly, a little irritated that the man was sticking his nose where it was obvious it didn't belong.
Harrison put his hands up in defense,"Alright, Detective Valens," he made it a point to emphasize detective," all I was trying to say was, detective Rush and I have already gone through our case files, you've got the last pile it might make it a little easier on everyone here if we split the stack, and go through what's left."
Scotty didn't say anything, he just stared at Lil. He knew what Harrison was saying was the smart thing to do, but before he could say anything Harrison spoke up again.
" I don't know about you detective, but there's a killer runnin' around out there, personally I'd like to catch the sonofabitch before he can do it again. Comprende."
Looking at Harrison now and steel in his voice, "Yeah, I got it.''
