Chapter 5
"Quinn, I thought you said Santana was supposed to be joining us." Aubrey asked trying to mask her excitement as she failed to subtly checking the entrance.
Quinn paused playing with her food to raised a questioning eyebrow at her girlfriend's best friend, who looked at her with big hopeful eyes.
Chloe and Quinn have been working out the schedule to spend more time with each other. They decided to tried to have lunch when the schedule allowed it.
"She said she was ruining late. You know, Santana's not known for punctuality." Quinn answered simply before going back to playing with her food like she was before.
"I'm sure Santana and Brittany are making up on the time they were away from each other." Chloe said. "I couldn't be away from Quinn for 3 months.
Quinn feigned a smile to Chloe.
Quinn was trying her hardest not letting the idea that Chloe doesn't want to get married to effect her negatively. She tried to even convinced herself that marriage was something she could live without and maybe she just wants it now because she can't have it.
Her eyes dazes off again, blocking out Chloe's and Aubrey conversation.
Marriage was a big deal in the Fabray family, especially with her mother. When she came out to her family, her mother was more upset that she wouldn't be able to plan a lavish wedding like she had done with her sister's wedding. That all change when with recent law changes, and now Judy was over the moon with Quinn and Chloe's relationship and has not been shy of encouraging the two of them get on with it.
But that was her mother's thing.
Not hers.
Right?
She was brought out of thoughts by the voice of her best friend.
"I guess you bitches didn't care to wait for me. Rude" Santana said stating her presence.
"You're 30 minutes late." Quinn said even though she knew the Latina didn't care.
"Santana, I saved you a seat next to me." Aubrey said excitingly as she slowly patted the neighboring seat.
Santana plastered on a fake smile for the tall blonde and tried not to grit her teeth in annoyance as she slowly took her seat, not missing the smug look on Quinn's face.
"Thanks." Santana muttered.
"How's Florida?" Aubrey asked.
"It's good. A lot of business down there." Santana said politely as she accepted the menu the waitress gave her.
"You know I was maybe looking to get a few small things done. Age hasn't been as good to be as it as for the three of you." Aubrey admitted.
"That's ridiculous, Aubrey. You don't need anything done." Chloe said.
"I'm 28 years old and the only one out of all my friends that's alone. So maybe I have had thoughts that could fix a few things about myself." Aubrey told Chloe.
"How bout fixing the crazy?" Santana muttered behind her menu but Quinn caught it and bit her lip from smiling.
"Tell her Santana." Chloe said looking for help.
"I'm sorry?" Santana asked pretending she wasn't listening.
"What is you're opinion as a surgeon?"
Santana felted all eyes on her, with Quinn smirking in front of her.
Santana turned to observed Aubrey. As a surgeon, there was a lot of changes that are immediately popping in her head. But as Chloe's and Quinn's friend, she didn't want to feel responsible of feeding more insecurities that the tall blonde would have.
Aubrey was the perfect client to have a lot of work done that she didn't need at all. She just had a lot of self-doubt.
So she opted to help her without putting her under the knife.
"You don't need any work done. You just need to know that you're beautiful. Then that would show people just how much a catch you really are." Santana said.
It was hard being her bitchy self when she knew someone genuinely had feeling for her.
"See?" Chloe said silently thanking the dark-hair girl.
Aubrey was now more in love with Santana if possible.
And it certainly showed on her face.
"Okay." Santana said trying to stop the girl from staring at her by raising the menu to hide her face again.
"So..." Santana started to feel uncomfortable.
The table was silent now as Aubrey was staring at Santana like she wanted to ravish her. Santana has been subtly trying to scoot her chair away.
She sent Quinn a devil glared, silently threaten her to help her, who just shrugged her shoulders.
"Aubrey..." Chloe trying to snap the blonde gaze away from the helpless Latina.
"Aubrey...Aubrey!" Chloe raised her voice to get her best friend's attention.
"What?" Aubrey snapped her eyes to the redhead.
"Did you say you talked to Stacie today?" Chloe asked.
"Yes!" Aubrey said excitingly forgetting about the dark-haired beauty beside her. "I forgot to tell you."
"Is Stacie one of the girls from your Bellas club?" Quinn asked.
"It was an A cappella group." Aubrey corrected.
"Right."
"ICCA National Champions." Aubrey continued.
"Okay." Quinn held up her arms.
"Aubrey stop." Chloe said as she interlocked her fingers with her girlfriend.
"Anyway, Stacie said some of the girls are in town to see Beca play a special gig for a celebrity's birthday." Aubrey said with enthusiasm.
"Beca is in New York?" Chloe asked surprised.
"Yeah. She's playing tonight. She invited us. We have to go."
"Tonight?" Chloe looked at Quinn worryingly.
"Yeah." Aubrey looked expectingly.
"I wish I had more notice, Quinn's dad's birthday party's tonight." Chloe said sadly.
"Hey, no... I know how much you miss the Bellas. My parent's will understand." Quinn said encouragingly.
"No. I made a commitment." Chloe turning to face Quinn, scooting closer. "And also were working on us. I don't think going to a club is a positive step."
"I want you to have fun. You haven't seen your friends in a long time. One night won't effect us. I promise." Quinn said leaning in for a quick peck.
Chloe smiled bringing her arms around the blonde neck, pulling her in for a deeper kiss not being satisfied with the small chaste one that the Quinn gave her, completely forgetting everyone else in the restaurant.
"Gross, were in public." Santana said with distaste.
Quinn rolled her eyes as she reluctantly pulled away from Chloe.
"I hate to eat and run, but Aubrey and I have a meeting." Chloe apologized while collecting her purse.
"Don't worry, honey. I got this." Quinn stopped the redhead when she saw her reach in her purse.
"Thanks baby." Chloe leaned foreword to give Quinn a goodbye kiss.
"Will you apologize to your parents for me?" Chloe asked.
"Yeah. Don't worry about it." Quinn reassured her.
"You're the best. I'll see you tonight." Chloe said.
"Bye Santana." Aubrey said hugging the surprise Latina.
"Bye." Santana said awkwardly slowly patting her back, surprised by the attack.
"Aubrey!" Chloe said trying to pull the blonde away.
"Okay. I'm coming." Aubrey said as she finally let go and following her friend out of the restaurant.
"Wow." Quinn said about the scene she just witness.
"I knew I should've never text her for you. Now she's think I like her. Worst she thinks we're friends." Santana grimaced as her body tries to shake off the Aubrey off her.
"It looks like she just has a small harmless crush. She hasn't been with anyone for a while. I'm sure it won't last long." Quinn shrugged.
"It's been 3 years but whatever. She needs to get over me." Santana said. "What am I saying? Nobody gets over me." She shook her head at herself, silently cursing her good looks attracting the crazies.
Quinn didn't respond and was unconsciously playing with her food again.
"Okay. What is going on with you?" Santana asked noticing her friend's quiet, somber demeanor.
Quinn looked up at concerned eyes.
"I've been here for about 15 minutes and you still have bacon on your plate." Santana said.
"So...?" Quinn not getting why that would raised a concern reaction from her friend, who is never concern about anything.
"You almost bit my hand in high school when I tried to steal a piece."
"People get their hand chopped of for stealing."
"My point is you inhale bacon, so there is something that's got you down."
"It's nothing."
"Well, then why aren't you acting annoying happy again? Chloe's back home and I know you guys are probably having crazy make up sex right now. So why do you look like you got kick out of your parents house?" Santana asked clearly not buying it.
Quinn frowned.
"I just having trouble sleeping, alright?" Quinn making up an excuse.
"From the sex?"
"God." Quinn sighed putting her fork down
"What? I don't understand. Is the make-up sex bad?"
"Shut up. I'm fine alright. The sex is fine." Quinn huffed.
"Calm down, Bitch. I was just asking."
"Sorry."
"Whatever. You better paying for my food too after I was molested by single white female."
Quinn pulled up in her parents drive way.
Not long after Quinn move to New York, her dad finally accepted a job offered from an old friend's firm who has been trying to get him to join for along time. Her dad always refused because he thought raising a family in the city would be too hard but now that his girls are grown and have their own life; He finally decided to accepted the offer. It was just the luck of the draw that his girls were also in New York.
Quinn's parent purchased a reasonable size house just outside the city. It reminds her nothing of her old house in Lima. The old house was way bigger than they ever needed. And everything in the house was decorated for show and nothing was to ever by touched or removed. It was like living in a museum.
Her parents have changed dramatically when they had a small falling out when she was in high school.
Her dad was drinking too much and had a fling with a younger girl resulting in Judy kicking him out of the house.
After losing his family, reality slapped him in the face and slowly started changing himself for the better. After a year a AA sessions and help, Judy laid down the rules and told him everything had to change if they were going to give it another chance.
Quinn was glad for it and thankful everyday that her family was able to overcome a hard time in their life.
Quinn could already spot a few familiar cars. Her sister and her husband, Santana and Brittany, a few of her dad's friends, and then the rest she didn't really recognized.
She sighed as she grabbed her present from the passenger sent and got out of the car. It looks like she was the last one the arrive. She knew she was going to hear it from her mom.
"Auntie Quinn!" Her sister twins's boy hollered as the spotted from the yard. The looked like they were playing soccer.
"Hey boys." Quinn greeting them with hugs.
"We're playing soccer. Do you want to play?"
"Maybe next time. I'm already late and I think grandma is going to yell at me."
Both boys started to giggle at the thought of their aunt getting in trouble.
"You think that's funny?" Quinn asked playfully.
The twins nodded not stopping their laughter.
"I'll give you guys something to laugh at." Quinn dramatically brought her hands up in a claw formation.
"Ahhhhh!" The boys laughed as they ran away as fast as they could.
"Yes. It's the tickle monster!" Quinn shouted while sprinting after the boys.
Unbeknownst to Quinn, Rachel was inside witnessing the adorable exchange between Quinn and her nephews. She always knew the blonde would be great was kids. She was surprised when she received a call from Judy, who she hadn't spoke to since Quinn and her broke up, inviting her to the party.
She could never say no to Judy, who she secretly missed. After finding out who her mother was and that she wanted nothing to do with her, Judy stepped in and filled that part just a little but enough to get Rachel through it.
She turned away from the scene not wanting to immediately be seen. She knew Quinn probably had no idea she was here and she didn't want to spring her appearance on her right away.
Quinn finally made her way into the house panting after being wore out by her nephew. She would never understand how kids have so much energy.
"Did you come from the moon?" Judy asked when she finally spots her daughter, who was incredibly late.
"Nice to see you too, mom." Quinn said while hugging her.
"Where's Chloe?" Judy said when she pulled away and notice the redhead's absence.
"She had some friends in town that she hasn't seen in a while. It was very short notice but she sends her regrets." Quinn explained.
"That's fine. I understand. I'm glad you could at least make it." Judy said.
"Where's dad? I want to wish him a happy birthday."
"In the backyard cooking on the grill."
Quinn nodded making her way in that direction.
"Quinn?" Her mother stopped her.
Quinn looked at her expectantly.
"What is it?"
"Umm..." Judy said looking hesitant.
"You scaring me..." Quinn raised her eyebrows at her mother.
"I love you."
"I love you too, mom. What's going on?" Quinn looked at her confused.
"Nothing. I'm glad you here. Now go see your father."
Quinn watch in confusion as her mom returned to the kitchen. Judy has become more dramatic with age. She shrugged her shoulders and continued walking to greet her father.
"Dad," Quinn made her way to her dad, who was sitting on one of the lawn chairs chatting with his friends.
She gave him a small kiss on his cheek.
"Baby girl," He smiled getting up from his chair.
"Whoa not too fast, old man." She joked.
"I never be too old to give you a hug. Glad you could make it sweetheart."
"I wouldn't it miss it for the world." Quinn said in the hug.
"Where's Chloe?"
Quinn sighed. That was one of the things she hated when you show up to a party without your girlfriend. She ends up answering the same question all night.
"She couldn't make it but she wishes you a happy birthday and her apologies." Quinn told him.
"She's a keeper, Quinn."
"Yeah." Quinn said in a uncommitted manner.
"What's the matter?" Russell knew something was wrong.
"Nothing."
Russell looked unconvinced.
"Quinn! Get your ass in here."
Quinn rolled her eyes at her best friend as her dad just laughed.
"That kid hasn't changed a bit." Russell smiled.
"Yeah she has. She's even gotten more intolerable, if that's possible."
"Well if that's the case, you better see what she wants." Russell nodding his head.
"If I must." Quinn sighed before making her way out.
Russell looked amused as the blonde dragged her feet.
Quinn would always be his little girl.
After the party slowly dying down not long after she arrived, she made her way to her parents backyard to help her mom clean up some of the mess before she drove home.
"A little chilly out here, don't you think?"
Quinn turned around to a familiar voice.
"What are you doing here? Have you been here the whole time?" Quinn ask not expecting to see Rachel here.
"Your mom invited me. And I admit I was kind of hiding from you all night. I didn't know how you would react." Rachel helping the blonde throwing cups in a trash bag.
"I was totally serious about being friends, Rach. I don't have a probably with you being here." Quinn said encouragingly.
"It's just weird. We haven't see each other for so long but it feel like were always around each other."
"Is that a bad thing?" Quinn prodded.
"NO, not at all." Rachel shook her head. "Just the opposite."
Quinn smiled.
"I'm glad."
They fell into a comfortable silence as they continued to pick up they trash around the backyard.
Rachel always knew when Quinn was in her thinking moments. Before Quinn, she could never stand the quietness. Her house was always filled with noise and laughter. But the blonde made her realized that calmness and serenity was refreshing. She had learn to cherish this moments. She liked the fact that they were still comfortable enough with each other to be lost in their own thoughts.
As she was trashing empty cans from the fold out table, she spotted a tray of grapes and smiled started forming on her face.
"Quinn?" Rachel called out.
"Yeah?" Quinn turned around and was immediately hit with a grape in her face.
Rachel laughed at Quinn's face.
"What are you doing?"
"Come on!" Rachel encouraged. "We use to go hours doing this."
"Are you trying to tell me you want to throw grapes in my mouth? You're a dirty girl, Miss. Berry." Quinn smirked.
"Perv." Rachel rolled her eyes before grabbing another. "Are you ready?"
"I must warn you! I might be a little rusty. But give me your best shot." Quinn walked backwards, giving a little more space between them.
"Alright. One, two..." Rachel aimed for the blonde's mouth.
Quinn moved her head foreword, mouth wide open, catching the thrown grape.
"Yes! I'm still awesome." She said after successful catching the fruit.
"Nice." Rachel smile.
"Keep them coming." Quinn said as she moved more paces back.
"Get cocky are we?"
"The grapes are really good."
"I remember when we did this in the backyard at your house in Lima." Rachel smiled at the memory.
"Yeah. I remember someone tricking me and got me to stand right beside by pool and over throwing the grape on purpose where I then proceeded to fall into the pool." Quinn said not amused while double checking if there was anything behind that could make her fall.
"That was funny. You're were so arrogant. You had to be taught a lesson." Rachel laughed as she remembered a wet blonde spluttering in the pool.
"Arrogant?" Quinn acting offended.
"Yeah." Rachel said.
"I'll show you arrogant." Quinn muttered to herself.
"Are you ready, Miss overly confident." Rachel raising her an eyebrow, arm stretch above her head.
"Hit me."
Rachel threw the fruit overhanded repeating the same action as she did in the past, completely overthrowing past the blonde.
Quinn leaned her head back, walking backwards, knowing the brunette was going to throw it a little further, trying to get her to miss.
Rachel watch in slow motion as she stubborn blonde stretch her neck as far as she could.
Quinn closed her eyes as she felt the fruit in her mouth.
"Wow. You're crazy Fabray." Rachel watch amazed as the Quinn successful caught it.
The blonde opened her eyes to look at Rachel, smiling in triumph.
Rachel started to shake her head at the blonde before she heard Quinn start to cough.
"Quinn!" Rachel rushed towards Quinn when she saw the blonde grab her neck as if she was choking.
"Oh my god! I'm so sorry." Rachel apologized as she worriedly before she reached the blonde.
Rachel was freaking out as she saw Quinn having a hard time breathing and was pounding on her chest. Rachel notice her face getting pale and immediately got into action to perform the hemlock.
She was having a lot of trouble when the blonde keep blocking her.
"Quinn, please! Let me help you." Rachel said panicky.
Quinn was struggling and fell to the ground bring Rachel down with her as they slightly wrestle with each other.
"Quinn!" Rachel said as she hit the ground.
Quinn was on her back and stopped moving all the sudden and Rachel felt her heart dropped.
"Quinn! Quinn." Rachel had managed to get on her knees as tried checking on the blonde's pulse leaning her head down if she could hear a heartbeat.
"Please Quinn! I'm sorry."
Quinn opened her mouth all of the sudden smiling as she show Rachel the whole grape in her mouth.
"Payback." Quinn said as she started chewing the fruit.
"You are such a jerk! You almost gave me a heart attack." Rachel said angry as she started getting up only to be brought back down by the blonde who had a strong grip on her waist.
"Unhand me now, Quinn Fabray." Rachel trying to wiggle out of Quinn's arm.
"Hey stop. It was a joke." Quinn said trying to calm the brunette down.
"I can't even stand to look at you." Rachel said still fighting.
"Who overthrew the grape?" Quinn raised her eyebrows.
Rachel looked away guilty.
"You had to be taught a lesson." Quinn mimicked the singer's words for earlier.
"God, you're so insufferable." Rachel gave up and settle laying in the grass next to the blonde.
"So I've been told." Quinn pulled the brunette closer, encouraging Rachel to lay her head on her chest as they gazed at the stars.
Rachel sighed, closing her eyes, relishing in the familiarity of the night.
"I miss hearing your heart beat." Rachel said.
Quinn smiled.
She felt like she was 17 again.
"I miss hearing you sing." Quinn whispered in her hair.
Rachel smiled.
"Well, you should come to me show." Rachel said. "You can bring Chloe."
"Yeah." Quinn words were distant.
"What? I thought you guys were okay now." Rachel recognizing the blonde's somberly tone.
"Yeah. She's back home again. Everything good." Quinn putting on a fake smile.
"Come on, Quinn. I know you. You can talk to me." Rachel encouraged.
"Hmmm.." Quinn hummed.
Rachel hand rubbed the blonde's stomach like she use to when they were younger.
"Can I ask you something? When were dating, did you picture us being married?" Quinn asked keeping her gazed on the stars.
"Honestly?" Rachel asked lifting her head up from the blonde's chest to look at her.
"Yeah." Quinn turned her head to stare into those beautiful brown eyes, anticipating her answer, not knowing why it was important to her.
Rachel paused for moment.
She was always known for having big dreams. She knew exactly how she wanted her future to play out. New york. Broadway. Tony Awards.
And most importantly Quinn.
Quinn has always been in her future.
Quinn has aged better than she could every imagine. She was a classic beauty.
"Everyday, Quinn. To every little detail. The proposal, the wedding, honeymoon. Everything." Rachel admitted softly.
Quinn heart melt. She wanted so bad to lean foreword and kiss Rachel. If she was honest with herself, she has been waiting to do it when she first saw her at Santana's and Brittany's apartment. She didn't know what to say. But she found the answer to the question she had been asking herself all day today.
She did care about marriage.
Only when she was with Rachel.
Quinn didn't replied. She pulled the brunette back down to snuggle with her. Enjoying this moment as long as she could.
"Chloe doesn't want to marry me." Quinn whispered after a moment of silence. She didn't realized she said it out loud.
"Oh, Quinn."
Quinn didn't realized she was crying until she saw a blurry Rachel lifting her head up and wiping away her tears.
"I'm sorry." Rachel said with all sincerity.
Rachel pursed he lips together, her heart clenched at the sight of the blonde. She didn't know what to say to the blonde to make her fell better.
Rachel wrapped her arms around Quinn's neck pulling her into a tight embrace. After a few minutes, she felt the blonde's arms around her tightening her hug and sniffling on her shoulder.
"It's okay, Quinn."
Judy went to check on the girls when she caught them the two of them in an embrace laying on the grass. It pained her heart to see heart daughter in that form but she knew there was no one better than Rachel to be there for her. She knew there was something wrong with her daughter when she saw her, despite the mask Quinn tries to put on in front of everyone.
At that moment she was glad she had peeked into Quinn's phone to get Rachel's number and invited her today.
Chloe and Aubrey showed up at the club Beca was deejaying at. It was so packed. She saw a few familiar face she recognize from movies and the music industry. Aubrey had a hold of her hand, leading her through the crowd to where the Dj stand was.
As they closer she spots Beca looking intensely at her laptop and bouncing her head back and forth. She was happy her friend had found success in what she was passionate in. She looked so in her element.
"Beca!" Aubrey tried to yell over all the music.
Beca lifted her head when she heard her name being called and immediately smiled when she saw her old friends. She whispered to the guy behind her and pointed at the two girls who nodded and made his way down to let them up.
The next Chloe knows is she was by lead up the small steps to the stage behind the very large speakers.
"Hi guys!" Beca greeted hugging Aubrey.
Beca asked the guy that the girls up to watch over for a minute.
"Chloe." Beca whispered admiring the redhead before slowly stepping foreword pulling her into a hug.
Chloe sighed wrapping her arms around the smaller girls neck
"You look amazing." Beca whispered before pulling away.
"Look at you! I'm so proud of you." Chloe said in her ear, shouting over the music.
"I don't regularly do this anymore. I'm in the studio producing most of the time but it was a favor for a friend. He flew me out and everything." Beca said having to step in Chloe's person space to be heard.
"Thank you for inviting us."
"Are you kidding? I miss the Bella's. You guys changed my life. We should all do something while i'm in town. Something where it's not too noisy."
"I liked that."
Chloe and Beca shared a smiled. Beca looked beautiful. She had done away from the dark make-up and replace it with a more soft natural look. She looked radiant.
"Come on. I'll show you how to mix." Beca interlocked their hands pulling her to her equipment. Aubrey was already tipsy talking to one of Beca's friends.
"No, I don't want to ruin someone's birthday." Chloe said shyly.
"You won't I promised." Beca assured her while grabbing her headphones and placing them around the redhead's neck.
"So on this screen right now we have Jason Derulo and then here..." Beca pointed to a the screen beside it. "We have Macklemore."
"Okay..."
"So, get into the beat and when you feel like you want to switch it up, go ahead and pull this fader up slowly." Beca grabbed Chloe's hand and placed it on the sound board.
"Oh my god. I can't do this." Chloe said nervously.
Beca smiled at how cute redhead shyness was. She rarely got to see this side of her.
She always remembered her as the girl who cornered her in the shower and threaten her to sing. The girl who had no shame showing her naked body to a stranger. And who was so encouraging her while they were in the Bellas'.
"This will help." Beca put the headphones laying on Chloe's neck and put them over her ears. She leaned in closer to talk to her.
"Come on I'll do it with you." Beca circled her arms behind Chloe placing her hands on top of the older girl.
Chloe closed her eyes and bumped her head to the music and also by the sensation of the brunette touching her. She exhaled and relax as she tried to think about everyone that was here and focus on just her and Beca. Feeling the music, she unconsciously felt their hands move in sync with each other.
She smiled as she heard the mix in her headphones blend well.
"See." Beca smiled as she watched Chloe relax.
"Not bad, right?" Beca asked.
"Now open your eyes." Beca whispered.
Chloe opened her eyes and felt the energy of the room as she watched everyone dancing and having a good time.
"That was so thrilling."
"Yeah. It was." Beca stated looking solely on Chloe.
Chloe felt the intensity of Beca's stare. She has noticed Beca being very flirtatious with her. Even though the told have always flirted with each other, Chloe felt this time it was something more than playful.
"How's Jesse?" Chloe asked trying not to get lost in Beca's eyes.
Beca scoffed and rolled her eyes.
"Ended a long time ago. I thought you heard?" She asked releasing her hold on Chloe and stood beside her playing with her faders.
"No, Aubrey and I don't know that much. You know with everyone living in the West Coast."
"Well it was really short lived. Nothing to really say about it." Beca shrugged.
"I heard you got engaged."
Chloe looked down at the floor.
"No. I mean I was. But not anymore."
Beca raised her eyebrows in shocked.
"But I thought... So you're single?" Beca asked trying not to get excited. Maybe her chance wasn't blown.
"Oh no. We're still together. We're working on our relationship. I just let her know, I'm not ready for marriage."
"Ouch." Beca grimaced.
"No, she's fine. I mean it's hard. But I think were fine. We're doing great." Chloe said trying to look happy.
"Okay. I'm sorry." Beca raised her hands in defeat.
"Enough of relationship talk. Do you want to see something cool?" Beca said walking to another board.
"Yeah."
Beca smiled pushing some buttons on the the keyboard.
Chloe watched as the lighting were changing with the music. It was so vibrate. Something you would see at a Disneyland.
"Cool right?"
"Amazing. Can i try?"
Beca smiled as she saw the Chloe that she remembered.
