Chapter 30

Brenna's body sagged with fatigue as she coached Lothíriel through her labor pains. They were nearing the twenty four hour mark and the queen was showing signs of exhaustion. Lothiriel's complexion was a waxy pale color as she panted through the pains that were wracking her body. Brenna did all that she could to help her friend. Even now she was helping the laboring woman pace the Royal Chambers and prayed that her water would break soon. Déorwyn and Oriel did what they could to help, but this was beyond them. They did what they could to lend support to the queen and aid Brenna.

Eomer paced his study with the other males. Every cry, every hour that passed was like a knife lancing his heart. He was pale and shaky. He prayed that his wife and child would survive this. It cut him off at the knees to know that there was nothing that he could do for her, to help her. It nearly unmanned him to see her suffering so. With his thoughts muddled, he was brought back to the present by an anguished cry from his laboring wife that nearly buckled his knees. Eothain pushed him in a chair and told Eomer to put his head down between his knees to keep from passing out.

The males were interrupted by Brenna nearly stumbling into the room. Eomer stood and went to her in concern. Elladan was at her side in an instant. The others stood waiting for her to say something. They could see that they young woman was exhausted and looked scared.

"I need help," she said tiredly. "I need Elladan and Elrohir, Eomer. I need you in that room because she's tiring and the babe hasn't turned yet. She's struggling and if we can't get her and the baby calmed and ready for this they won't make it."

Her news shocked those in the room. Eomer looked ready to be sick and he swayed slightly. Eothain steadied him and he clenched his jaw against the emotions and nodded to her and the Sons of Elrond. The quartet left the rest of the gentlemen in the study and made their way quickly down the hallway to the Royal Chambers where Lothíriel was struggling to keep herself composed.

Brenna could feel Lothiriel's fatigue and fear as she entered the room and knew that the Sons of Elrond could as well. They turned to her with startled looks on their faces when they realized just how badly this labor was going. Brenna choked back her emotions and nodded to them, not letting Lothíriel see her own fears.

"Alright Lothíriel," Brenna began with a tired smile, "I've brought reinforcements. Let's see if we can get the little one out soon. Do you want to know what you'll be having?"

Lothíriel laughed tiredly and nodded. Eomer looked sharply at Brenna with emotions shining in his eyes. Brenna told them with a smile that their first little princess would be arriving soon. Eomer swallowed thickly and kissed Lothiriel's brow. He wrapped his strong arms around her and felt her body tremble with the force of the contraction coursing through her. He closed his eyes, feeling helpless in the situation. He wanted nothing more than to help his love through this, to take the pain away somehow.

Brenna let the couple share the moment and pulled the Sons of Elrond on the side. Elladan ran his hands over her arms soothingly and pulled her into his embrace. Elrohir was checking her over to make sure that she was alright. She quietly told them that the babe needed to be turned and she needed them to help her manage the pain. There were a few different ways to try to get the babe to turn that they would attempt soon, but there was one last ditch effort she could try. She knew that attempting to physically turn the child would cause significant pain and discomfort for Lothíriel, but if it wasn't done and both she and the child were at risk of dying.

Brenna went to Lothíriel as she felt the queen's pain mounting from across the room. She prayed to the Valar for their help through this and their mercy. Her brow flared and she felt the answering warmth and sighed in relief. Feeling energy surge through her body, she turned to where Lothíriel was clinging to the bedpost as the latest contraction nearly brought her to her knees. There was a rush of fluids and Brenna knew that her water had broken.

The maids worked quickly to clean up the mess and help their lady change behind a privacy screen into a fresh chemise. Brenna called for them to have a warm bath of water drawn for the queen. They all looked at her like she was crazy, but she told them that it might help to not only soothe Lothíriel and the babe, but also might help turn her. Eomer and the maids helped Lothíriel into the tub and she sighed in the warm water. The aches of labor were somewhat soothed with the water and though the contractions still shook her smaller frame, she endured them better. Brenna quietly sang the songs of Este to her and the babe as she massaged her friend's feet in the tub. Brenna let her labor in the tub for a couple of hours before suggesting that they get back to the bed and check her progress. She assured her friend that if they needed to get her back in the warm tub they could later.

Brenna and Eomer helped her to shakily stand and change into a new chemise. Eomer scooped his wife in his arms and walked back towards the bed. Brenna instructed him to place her on the bed. She awkwardly told Lothíriel to get on the bed on all fours with her upper body down. Brenna walked towards her and began massaging her lower back and trying to maneuver Lothíriel's hips a bit to keep her body loose and relaxed. She instructed her to keep breathing and focusing on breathing calmly. When the next contraction subsided Brenna told her to climb up the bed and lay back.

Once they finally maneuvered her back to the bed, the midwife checked her progress. The midwife pulled Brenna aside and told her that the babe would be coming soon and that the queen needed to start pushing soon.

Eomer had heard the conversation and nodded to Brenna. He had such a look of heartbreaking hope and trust in his eyes that she could only swallow and nod to him. He leaned down and whispered to Lothíriel who looked terrified and ready to cry. She placed a hand on her bulging stomach as if to shield her unborn child. He placed his hand on hers and murmured to her reassuringly and in comfort. She turned to Brenna and nodded solemnly.

The midwife instructed her get situated with Eomer behind her. Eomer climbed into the bed behind her and held his hands out for her to grip. She turned her face into the crook of his neck and he bent his head to hers, murmuring to her the whole time. All the while the midwife was talking Brenna through the process. Brenna held up her hand to stop the woman from talking and felt out with her senses. She focused in on Lothíriel and the child. She noticed the little princess had indeed cooperated with the use of the warm bath and was ready to greet the world. Brenna opened her eyes coming back to herself and looked at the others. Her bright smile was reassuring to everyone.

Elladan and Elrohir had come forward to lend their aid. Brenna was situated with the midwife. Oriel and Déorwyn each held one of her feet for her to bear down into their grasp. On the next contraction the midwife told Lothíriel to push. The petite woman gripped her husband's hands and bore down gritting her teeth. Her whole body seemed to shake with the force of the contraction shaking her body. Eomer looked pale and wrought with worry, excitement, and love for his small wife struggling to bring their child into the world.

Brenna coached her through it, soothing with the songs of Este and Elbereth. She used her healing power to help aid in the labor as much as she could. Lothíriel pushed for nearly two hours. By the end she was sobbing with the pain and Eomer looked close to tears himself, but princess Léofwyn finally arrived with one last mighty push. Lothíriel let out such a sound that Eomer finally seemed to break and was crying silently. He felt her body sag and thought the worst until he heard the squalling sound of his daughter. Brenna held the princess and gently cleaned her. Eomer hugged his exhausted wife and the two shed tears of joy and relief that the baby was finally there.

Eomer stood from the bed and allowed her handmaidens and the midwife to attend her. He turned to Brenna and emotionally accepted his daughter into his arms. She arranged his arms gently and passed the tiny babe to him. He looked down at his daughter with such a look of love. Turning to where his wife was now being helped back into the freshly changed bed, he smiled softly at his wife.

Brenna made her way back to Lothíriel and soothed her pain as much as she could. Elladan and Elrohir were there working at her side to help health her as much as they could. This had been one of the most difficult births that they had attended in many long years. They knew that without their aid, without Brenna's aid, and without the intervention of the Valar that both mother and child would have been lost.

Once Brenna was certain that both mother and child were fine and perfectly healthy she shakily stood. Elladan steadied her as she swayed with her own exhaustion. Brenna told the Royal family that all was well and that both mother and child would just need rest. She took a few steps before she nearly stumbled, but Elladan caught her and swept her up in his arms. He turned back to Eomer to let him know that she was just tired and that he would bring her to her room where Oriel would see to her.

Eomer handed his daughter to his wife and sat on the edge of their bed. He kissed his daughter's head gently and then kissed Lothíriel, pouring all of the love he had for her into it. He pulled back and gently touched her cheek and told her to get some rest and he would watch over them while they slept.

Meanwhile Elladan carried an exhausted Brenna to her rooms with Elrohir and Oriel trailing behind. He looked down at her pale features and realized that she had drifted off to sleep in the short trip from the Royal Chambers to her rooms. Oriel entered first and found that a maid had been sent ahead to assist in getting Brenna changed and into the bed. Elladan laid her gently on the bed, kissing her forehead before taking his leave.

Oriel and the maid had Brenna cleaned up, changed and in bed tucked in rather quickly before they themselves retired to their own rooms. It had been a long day and a half for all those present with the laboring queen, Brenna more so than others because she had been there with her long than others. The only time that she left Lothíriel's side was when she left to get the Sons of Elrond and Eomer.

Meanwhile, Elladan and Elrohir returned to the study where the other males were pacing like caged animals. The group stood and turned as one waiting for news. Elladan and Elrohir quietly filled them in on what had transpired and the news that both mother and the new princess were resting under the watchful eye of the king.

Eothain sagged in his chair and sent a silent prayer of thanks to the gods, as did the others in the room. They had feared the worst when Brenna had shown up asking for help. It was joyous news for the Riddermark. Eothain's smile spread wide as he stood and went to spread the word. For now the celebrations would be silent to allow both mother and child to rest, for the queen had surely earned that rest after what she had been through.

Eothain's long strides reached the Hall rather quickly where he found a group of citizens anxiously waiting for news. His answering smile was enough confirmation for them, but before they could shout out or cheer loudly, he explained that the queen and child were resting and needed the quiet for now. Word was sent that Queen Lothíriel was well and resting and that the royal child had been born and was well. It was also told that Lady Brenna and the Sons of Elrond helped bring that child safely into this world.

It was a quiet Meduseld and Edoras that Aragorn and the others arrived at later that evening. At first the group feared the worst, but once the stable master explained what had transpired earlier that day they understood. Aragorn looked concerned when he heard just how difficult the birth had been for all involved. Raina and the other girls listened in distress as they heard that Queen Lothíriel nearly took a turn for the worst during her labor. The rest of the party respectfully and quietly entered the Hall and were ushered to their accommodations for the evening.

The morning sun brought with it a renewed and refreshed newly reunited group of travel companions. Brenna sleepily dressed in a deep green dress with a matching lighter sage green underdress. She slipped on soft leather flats and braided her hair back before making her way to the Hall. She greeted an equally sleepy Oriel in the hallway and the two elleths walked together. They were greeted warmly in the Hall where Eomer was greeting his guests. Though he had dark circles under his eyes, he was beaming with pride and love as he announced that he and his lady wife greeted a daughter the previous day. There were cheers and congratulations given.

Eomer turned and pulled Brenna into a tight hug and held her tightly. He was completely forgoing protocol, but neither of them cared. He pulled away and turned towards the crowd and told them that without the arrival and aid of Lady Brenna and the Sons of Elrond, then the queen and princess would not have made it. Many were startled by the news and looked to Brenna. She flushed and fidgeted under the scrutiny. Just then Elladan and Elrohir arrived, causing the attention to shift towards them. There were toasts given to them and they nodded in recognition.

Brenna was led to one of the long tables by Eomer who bowed to her. He straightened and said that he would be with the queen and his daughter and should only be disturbed in an emergency. Brenna sat with the Sons of Elrond sitting on each side of her. Oriel sat across from her with a mischievous smile on her face. It was then that Brenna noticed that the rest of their travel companions had arrived sometime in the last twelve hours. She greeted them all warmly.

Raina and the girls asked how she was feeling. Brenna smiled and told them that she was fine, just a little tried. Aragorn, who was nearby, told her not to overtax herself. She just shrugged with a grin and told him that she would try not to. Her friends laughed, knowing that she usually got into more trouble than she intended to.

The group enjoyed sharing a warm and filling brunch together. Brenna sat talking happily with her friends and was happy to see the younger girls so well adjusted. She was particularly thrilled to see Raina and Ohtar getting along so well. It was only a matter of time before she was approached with one or both of them seeking permission to become betrothed. Her eye went unfocused as she felt the visions slowly start. With a sigh she gradually let them come to her. Flash! She saw Ohtar and Raina hand-fasting in the spring. Flash! She saw herself planting a field of the flowers from Vana near Edoras. Flash! She saw herself traveling back to Rivendell and then North to the Dunedain village. Flash! She saw Elladan and Elrohir traveling back and forth between Gondor and Rivendell over the next few years. Flash! She felt and saw the mist and shadow. Brenna wrenched herself from the vision as soon as she started to feel the cold.

Elladan cradled her to his chest on the bench. He felt her body tremble slightly and tightened his grip comfortingly. He felt her slowly come back to the present and watched her eyes flutter briefly. He smoothed her hair back with his right hand and looked into her eyes searchingly. Seeing that she was alright he gently situated her on the bench so that she was able to sit on her own.

Brenna sighed and regaled them with what she had seen. "It would seem that I need to make it back to Rivendell for a time before making my way to the North," she told the group. She waved off their concerned protests. "I'll stay here and recover for a week, maybe two before I must turn back to Rivendell. Plans must be made. From there I need to make it to the Dunedain village in the North before spring."

Aragorn and Ohtar looked concerned for their kinsmen at the news that she would be going to their homeland so soon. The rest of her Guard and travel companions were lost in their thoughts. Eothain and the members of her Rohirric Guard present nodded to one another and left the hall to make the necessary preparations to aid her. It was the least that they and their people could do to aid her after she had saved their queen and heir.

Brenna leaned on Elladan tiredly as she ate her brunch. The Sons of Elrond were also tired, but not yet to her level. Raina, Beatrice, and Alanna looked at their friend quietly from across the table. They were not sure what the upcoming journey meant for them. It was unclear whether or not Brenna intended for them to accompany her or if she wanted them to return to Gondor under the protection of King Aragorn.

As if sensing their quandary, Brenna looked towards them. "The choice to stay with me or return to Gondor is completely up to you," she told them quietly. "I'll not make such a choice for you. I want the three of you to take some time to think over your options and decide what it is that you want to do, even if it means that the three of you choose differently."

After grabbing an apple from the table, Brenna stood and Elladan and Elrohir followed. Elladan held his hand out for her to hold as she stepped over the bench. Oriel looked torn between staying with the younger girls and following her friend. Brenna just smiled to her, letting her know that she could stay. The Sons of Elrond escorted her down to the Royal Stables. The stable master let them in immediately and watched as Brenna walked right to where she knew Hiril would be waiting.

The aforementioned horse snorted impatiently as Brenna approached. Grabbing a brush from the wall, she stepped into the stall and began humming softly. Holding out the apple in her hand, Hiril daintily took it and munched happily. Brenna laughed as she set about brushing her loyal friend. She checked her legs and hooves for any injuries as she went. When she had completed brushing out her four legged friend, she turned to leave the stall to find her Elvish and Rohirric Guard members present. They had checked their own horses as well, for it had been a long and hard journey for them.

Brenna stepped out of the stall and hung the brush back on the wall. Grabbing a scoop of oats and a fresh bucket of water, she made sure that Hiril was taken care of and turned back to the group that was waiting. She found her Rohirric Guard and friends grinning at her. Brenna just smiled and shrugged a bit before she sobered.

"While the pace I'll need to set back to Rivendell won't have the same urgency, I will still need to get there as soon as I can," she told them.

"Thank the Valar for that!" Fram stated. "Lass you rode as hard and fast as any seasoned of the Rohirrim would've and for that you have our thanks."

There was a murmur of agreement from the Rohirrim present. Brenna nodded to them tiredly. Her body still ached a bit from the journey and subsequent race across the plains to make it in time. She was sure that she was not the only one feeling the discomfort. Regardless of how seasoned or used to it a person was, there was no changing the fact that they had spent nearly three months racing time since they had left Rivendell. You could easily put that at six or seven months of travel since they had left Rohan in the first place. The most seasoned of warrior and traveler would be weary after such a journey, much less inexperienced young women such as Raina and the younger girls.

"It's going to get worse before it gets better," she cautioned them. "This confrontation with the Shadow Wraith will leave little time to prepare for the issue with the Men of the South and East. We cannot stretch ourselves too thin."

Elladan and Elrohir looked to one another trying to think of a way to make it so that they weren't stretched too thin. They knew that the borders would need to hold and the forces of the Men of the West would need to hold. Even now in times of relative peace, there would still be those that would try to usurp the throne.

Brenna looked to the group seriously and told them, "With that said, should the Old Kingdom fall and not be able to hold back the Shadow Wraith all will be lost."

The group escorted her back to the Hall of Meduseld where Raina and the two other girls were waiting with Oriel. "We'll go with you Lady Brenna," Raina said surely. "There's something about this journey that is telling me that we will need to be there with you."

Brenna looked at the younger woman and smiled, nodding her head. Ohtar looked like he was struggling not to protest. He bit back any objection that he had when Raina explained why they would be going. With a tortured look on his tanned face, he nodded his agreement and walked out of the hall to get some air. Raina looked startled at his departure and hurried after him. The others just watched curiously as the normally shy woman raced after him.

"Ohtar!" she called out. "Wait, let me explain!"

She found him around the corner looking towards the northwest, pacing. He turned to her with a look full of such emotion that it caught her breath. He crossed to her and took her hands in his own. He kissed her knuckles and waited for her to continue talking.

"I need to be there," she told him softly. "I'm terrified, but I won't be parted from Brenna. I won't be parted from you," she said quietly.

His eyes widened and roved over her features carefully. "Are you sure love?" he asked with his voice full of emotion. "Are you sure that this is what you want?"

"Aye, I'm sure. There's no turning back now. If your people, need aid then it is only right that I go with Brenna if they are to be my people too," she said with her voice trailing off.

He leaned down and touched her brow to his own. "If you're sure then I must speak to Lady Brenna. Will you have me?" he asked softly. "Will you wed me and spend the rest of our time in Arda at my side, come what may?"

Raina smile beautifully and nodded, "Yes."

He swept her against his taller, muscular frame and kissed her. When he felt her softer body meld to his own, he deepened the kiss and pulled away with a groan.

"Come, we must speak to Lady Brenna," he said.

The pair walked hand in hand into the hall. Brenna grinned and waited for them to approach her. Elladan stood at her side with their other friends around them watching the scene curiously.

"Lady Brenna," Ohtar began formally. "I've come to ask your permission to pledge my troth to your charge and wed her when we reach my homeland."

Brenna smiled softly at Raina, who was glowing with happiness and love for the man at her side. The gentle warrior had indeed helped to heal the younger woman. She looked back to Ohtar, who was looking down at Raina with a besotted look on his face.

"If you already have the lady in questions affirmative answer, then you have my blessing and permission," Brenna said. She stepped to where the two were standing and placed her hand over their joined hands. "You may consider yourselves betrothed from this time forward. May your life together be happy and blessed."

Cheers rang out around the hall. Congratulations were given to the pair. Eomer had come to check what was happening and when he hear the news he smiled tiredly the two and ordered that in addition to the naming and presentation feast of his daughter planned for that evening, an announcement and toast to the happy pair would be given.

Later that night Brenna had dressed in a rich amber colored gown with deep green Rohirric knots embroidered on the edges. She left her hair flowing long down her back. Leaving her rooms she quickly made her way to the Royal Chambers. Seeing her arrival, she was immediately ushered into the suite where the Royal Family was getting ready for the evening.

Brenna went to her friend sitting sorely, and tiredly at the vanity as the handmaidens dressed their queen for the ceremony and celebrations that night. Eomer greeted her and kissed her brow affectionately as she passed him on her way to Lothíriel s side. When she reached her friend, she immediately took her hands and ran them soothingly and gently over her. The blue haze that wrapped around the young queen pulsed for a moment before it was absorbed into her body. Lothíriel sighed in relief, feeling her pain dulled and her body healed a little more after her ordeal.

"Thank you my friend," Lothíriel said looking at Brenna with eyes full of tears. "I fear that had you not arrived neither of us would have survived. So thank you, for everything. If you are ever in need, you only need to ask and I will do all in my power to see that you have the aid that you need."

"Our gratitude and aid my love," Eomer said coming to stand beside his petite queen. His eyes were so full of love and wonder as she looked at her.

Brenna nodded, "It would not have gone well Lothíriel, but we'll leave it at that. You should know that you need not worry about what may have been because that danger has passed. Your other births will be much easier and far less dangerous."

"Other births?" Eomer asked looking pale and terrified. "I had not thought to see my wife struggle through such a thing again."

"Eomer," Brenna said with some amusement, "you will have four children. You'll have two of each and be blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren."

Lothíriel held her husband's hand on her shoulder and smiled softly. "It will be nice to hear the laughter of children in these halls will it not milord?"

Brenna stepped away from the couple to give them space. She turned and found little Léofwyn sleeping in a bassinet near the bed. Gently she picked up the sleeping babe and kissed her tawny brow. Humming softly she held the child to her and soothed any discomfort or pain from her ordeal entering the world. The little princess slumbered on, with her pink lips sucking and one of her hands curled towards her cheek. Brenna smiled at the baby as she caught flashed of her life and future. She would be loved and cherished by her father before she was loved and cherished by her future husband, who would love her for all of their days.

Brenna turned back to the King and Queen, both of whom were now standing and waiting for Brenna. She went to hand the child to Lothíriel, but her friend told her that she could continue holding the baby. Brenna looked at the couple in confusion, but they just smiled at her as they left the Royal suite. Brenna followed them into the Hall where the citizens of Edoras were assembled. The lords from all of the provinces were also present for the announcement and celebration for their country's heiress. The King and Queen stepped up to the dais where the thrones were located and they beckoned Brenna to step up next to Lothíriel with the baby.

In a clear and proud voice Eomer address the assembly telling them that they were here to celebrate and welcome little Léofwyn, for she was their beloved joy. He raised his glass to praise the princess, blessing her and her life. He then praised his lady queen for her courage and struggle to bring their child into the world. Finally both he and Lothíriel raised their glasses high to Brenna and the Sons of Elrond for their timely arrival and aid in bringing the little one into the world. Cheers range out in the hall, and still the little princess slept on. Brenna kissed her brow and gave her the blessings of the Valar and handed the child gently into the arms of Eomer who proudly showed off his daughter.

Brenna gasped Lothíriel's hand to make sure that she was holding up alright. The young queen nodded to her reassuringly and waved off her concern. Brenna smiled and stepped down where Elladan was waiting. He looped her arm through his own and led her to the table that had been set aside for her travel companions.

The celebrations lasted well into the night. A while later Eomer announced the betrothal of Ohtar and Lady Raina. There were cheers and calls of congratulations for the pair. It was such a happy night and celebration. The people thoroughly and wholly rejoiced in the happy news and events. Queen Lothíriel and little Léofwyn however retired much early than the others. Eomer looked like he wanted to follow, but he stayed after Lothíriel assured him that they would be fine and waiting for him once he had celebrated with his people. He kissed her soundly, causing the hall to ring out with catcalls and wolf whistles in response. Lothíriel blushed brightly, but Eomer just grinned and laughed.

Brenna smiled at the happy couple and leaned against Elladan watching the crowd dancing and drinking. She laughed as Gimli participated in a drinking game with the Rohirrim. It was apparently now a tradition when they were all together. She grinned up at Elladan as the others egged him on and taunted him into joining in. Brenna waved him off to the group. He flashed a roguish grin as he kissed the back of her hand before joining the others. Brenna sighed as she stood leaning against one of the pillars of the hall for a while.

An hour had passed before she slipped from the main crowd and asked a passing servant to have her cloak fetched for her. A maid came bustling back with it and helped her to secure the warm thick green cloak that Eowyn had given her at Helm's Deep. Brenna stayed towards the shadows and slipped out the door that King Théoden had given her permission to use and out into the private gardens of the Royal Family. Looking up at the clear night sky she hummed softly. She sat carefully on a nearby stone bench and breathed in deeply the cool air.

One of the centuries outside had come to see who was in the garden and apologized for disturbing her. She laughed and waved it off, but asked if he could have the burlap wrapped package from her rooms brought and a thick blanket for her to kneel on. He looked confused by her request, but he turned to do her bidding. A short time later Eomer himself returned with the pouch in question and a thick Rohirric blanket. Her Guard had accompanied him as well as her other friends.

Turning to her friend, "Where would you like that meadow Eomer?"

He looked at her in concern. "Brenna, please do not overtax yourself. It can wait until you've had more rest," he tried to persuade her.

"Nay my friend," she interrupted him. "This will be my gift to your House celebrating the birth of your first child. Long will this meadow and field of flowers grown. It will be a symbol of life and hope for your family and people."

He looked at her carefully and nodded. "Lothíriel and I had discussed this for some time. Just on the other side of this garden wall there is patch of land outside the pastures. It is fallow, but too rocky to plant crops. If you feel this is appropriate, perhaps this plot of land would work?"

Brenna thought about it and asked him to show her. Torches were brought and he escorted her through a door hidden by one of the back hedges. She stepped out and saw that this was an acre, maybe two that was situated behind the hall between the pasture and rolling plains to the sides and a hill to the back. It would work just fine. Turning to Eomer she grinned and nodded to him.

He gently laid the blanket on the ground for her to kneel. Her features seemed to glow in the light of the stars both in the sky and on her forehead. Brenna accepted the burlap wrapped pouch that he carefully passed to her. She dug her hands into the soil. It was cold and hard, but she managed to get her hands wrist deep in the soil there. Calling upon her powers she sought the waters deep and the dormant seeds present. Then she reached for a handful of the precious blossoms from the Valar and buried them in the soil and pushed her powers out. Closing her eyes she sought to have this whole plot of land covered in a rainbow of color. She pictured the roots spreading and burrowing deep and felt the plants begin to take hold. It was not quite time for them to bloom, as the weather was terribly cold.

Pulling back she addressed Eomer, "Come spring this field will bloom far and wide my friend. The weather and season are wrong for the blossoms now, but they will make their appearance when the climate is better."

He helped her to stand and thanked her. Taking the towel brought by a servant he gently cleaned her hands and regarded her carefully. She was beginning to get dark circles under her eyes. "Come little sister, let's get you back inside and rested. You've done more than enough for my family and people," Eomer said.

Brenna smiled tiredly, "I appear to have more older brothers then I know what to do with.

"Aye Lass and don't you forget it," Gimli said merrily.

She snorted in an unladylike fashion and regarded the tipsy dwarf affectionately. Shaking her head she allowed the group to bundle and escort her safely back into the Hall. By now many of the party goers had retired for the evening. The few stragglers were in the process of being helped to their rooms by servants. Brenna was walked to her rooms by Eomer who left her in her rooms with Oriel. He passed the blanket and pouch to a maid in the room and told Brenna she was to rest this night and the next day. She shook her head at him in amusement, but agreed.

After spending a week resting and recovering from the grueling journey to Edoras, Brenna and the group traveling with her were saddled up and ready to ride out. Lothíriel had warm clothing fashioned for the younger girls. Thick warm Rohirric cloaks and extra blankets were provided for them. It was decided that they would be taking the Gap of Rohan to avoid as much of the treacherous mountains in winter as possible. It would take them a little over six weeks to get there at a steady pace, but Brenna knew that it was more likely to take them a full two months with the way that the weather was looking.

She turned to her friends and hugged first Lothíriel and then Eomer. Lothíriel gently passed her the baby to hold. Brenna snuggled the child against her shoulder and nuzzled into her. She whispered softly to the babe and kissed her brow before handing her back to Lothíriel. She waved happily to the people that had come to see them off and mounted Hiril.

Looking around she saw that Aragorn and his party were also ready to ride out. The two groups would ride together to the Gap of Rohan before they parted ways. Eomer was sending all of Brenna's Rohirric Guard and an additional twenty five Riders to supplement Aragorn's party returning to Gondor. The Gondorian King was sending five of the Ithilien Rangers North, as well as Erchirion, but the rest would have to travel with him back to Minas Tirith. His captain had told him that they could not risk sending any more men lest their own party be too small. Brenna understood and told them that with the additional Riders she and her group would be fine and safely reach Rivendell.

Elladan and Elrohir spoke with Aragorn privately in the days leading up to their eminent departure. It was decided that they should stay with Brenna leading up to the confrontation with the Shadow Wraith. If they were needed an envoy or messenger could be sent, but Aragorn assured them with the assistance of Imrahil, Faramir, and his lady wife that he would be fine. He told them to send word and instructions as the time to confront the Shadow Wraith drew nearer. Eomer expressed a similar sentiment, telling them that they only need to say the word and there would be an eored ready to ride to their aid.

The group set out with the blessings of the Royal House of Rohan and raced out across the plains. It was a bitter cold wind that cut through the air that had them making as much distance as they could with the light of each day. They would bed down in the local towns or villages as they went until they reached the border of Rohan.

It was an emotional parting for Aragorn and Brenna. He hugged her tightly to his chest and fervently urged her to remain safe. He told her to be on her guard and to stay close to her travel companions. Legolas and Gimli would be accompanying Brenna to Rivendell and have messengers sent out to their kin telling them of what was to come. Even now messengers were on their way to their homelands to tell their people of the arrival of the warriors from Valinor. Only time would tell what the reaction of their kinsmen would be.

Brenna pulled her cloaked tighter around herself as they rode. She turned in her saddle to make sure that Raina and the younger girls were warm enough. Seeing their teeth chattering, she had them each pull a blanket around themselves over their travel cloaks. Brenna caught the eye of her travel companions and knew that their thoughts were similar. If it got much colder they would not be able to continue. She prayed to the Valar that they would make it through the Gap of Rohan and to Rivendell safely and swiftly.

They continued riding until one of their scouts told them of a good area to set up camp up ahead. It would give them coverage from the wind, but was also a secure location. The group rode to the area, which the Sons of Elrond and some of the Riders were familiar with. A series of fires were lit and stoked through the night to throw off as much heat as possible. Brenna made sure that her young friends were as warm as possible, going so far as to give them her extra blanket and tucking around the three of them. She and Oriel slept leaning back against a tree stump sharing their blankets. The perimeter guard set up a rotation, only taking a couple of hours at a time before switching with someone else. This way there would be minimal exposure to the cold and wind.

The morning brought with it a brief reprieve from the biting winds. They quickly packed up camp and set out. Brenna knew that they would be venturing fairly close to Dunland, but there was nothing that they could do about this. As long as they stayed to the road and kept their pace swift all would be well. The weather changed midday and light snow began to fall. Brenna looked to the Sons of Elrond leading them on this leg of the journey. Elladan caught her eye and nodded to her reassuringly. He moved nudged his horse and turned to ride beside her for a while.

"How are you holding up melamin?" he asked her quietly.

"I'm well Elladan, it's the girls that I'm worried about," she admitted. "I'm able to regulate and maintain my body temperature better than they are. They're quite unused to travel such as this."

"We'll keep a careful eye on them love," he assured her. "We're making good time and progress and should be able to reach the borders of Rivendell in just a few short weeks. There's a farm two days from here that we can stay at and four days from there is an old ruin that we can set up camp at."

Brenna nodded and smiled to him. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath knowing that they would make it, but it would be a long and cold journey, especially for the younger women. Brenna knew that she had some additional layers on, such as the vambraces she wore on her forearms over her clothing. The leather added another layer of protection against the cold and weather. She had on an additional layer of padding and light mail under her riding habit. It was not much, but would protect her from most attacks and give her one more layer that she was wearing.

The company rode until the sun was starting to dip in the sky. They went to an area that was previously scouted for camp for the night. This routine passed relatively the same for the next two weeks. On the beginning of the third week since they had left Aragorn a party of elves met them. Brenna sighed in relief and realized that they were within days of the realm. Elladan and Elrohir greeted their kinsmen happily. The rest of Brenna's Elvish Guard pushed forward to speak with them as well.

Brenna turned to see Alanna and Beatrice huddled tiredly in their saddles. Raina seemed to be faring a little better, but not by much. They had adjusted fairly well to life on the road, but it was still a relatively new lifestyle for them. However, they were young and resilient and coped with it as best they could. Brenna and Oriel did their best to help the younger women endure the journey.

With the additional elves present, they were able to get more rest through the night and set up camp earlier. Brenna's Guard sighed in relief, even the more experienced Riders, who practically lived in their saddles welcomed the additional aid. The group got as much rest as they could before setting out and moving as swiftly as they could to Rivendell.

A little over a week later it was a tired and cold group that reached the border of Rivendell. A snowstorm two days before had delayed their progress. Brenna asked Elladan how much further as she observed the very worn looking young girls in their party. He told her that they would make it there by midday. The news was spread out through the group and they swiftly made their way the rest of the way to the Last Homely House. They were greeted by Lord Celeborn and Lord Glorfindel and ushered inside out of the cold.

Brenna sighed in relief upon entering the main hall and seeing that there was a fire roaring in the fireplace. She ushered Alanna and Beatrice forward. Raina stepped forward with the two and stood nearby. Ohtar stood with a hand on the small of her back and asked her if she was alright. Raina looked up at him tiredly, but smiled and told him that she was fine.

Brenna watched from nearby and knew that as soon as the two wed, she would need to turn over the responsibility of the younger girls to the noble Ranger. He would see to their care and well-being. For the time being however, they were her responsibility until such a time that Raina was married as Alanna was her kin and therefore would go wherever she went. Beatrice, though not technically kin, would not be parted from the two other girls. It was satisfying and bittersweet for Brenna to realize that her time with these girls was soon not going to be her responsibility.

Elladan led her to a nearby chair. Brenna sat down tiredly and looked around the hall observing the others. She saw that Angrod and the others from Valinor had come to greet them. He crossed the room to where Oriel was standing and stopped in front of her. Oriel turned and saw him and threw her arms around him. He held her to him. The others looked on smiling at the couple. Ohtar stood by Raina's side and smiled happily down at his betrothed.

Soon everyone's rooms were ready and they were led to where they would be staying. Elladan escorted her to her rooms and made sure that she was set for the night. He kissed her brow and told her to get some rest. Brenna smiled and reached up, cupping his cheek and told him to do the same. She entered her room and found that her things were already there waiting for her. Stepping through the door to the adjoining bath, she saw that a warm bath had already been drawn. She stripped of her cold and dirty travel clothes and stepped into the steaming water. She washed away the grime of their journey and massaged scented oils and soap into her hair and over her body. Once she was sure that she was thoroughly cleaned, she stepped out of the tub and toweled off before pulling on a robe.

Brenna entered her room and sat at the vanity and brushed out her hair humming softly to herself. Once her task was completed she pulled out a warm night shirt and climbed under the warm soft covers of her bed and drifted off to sleep. With a sigh she let herself drift off and into the peaceful and restful arms of Morpheus.

The following months in Rivendell passed slowly for Brenna and her friends. This winter was particularly cold and hard limiting travel and delaying their departure for the Dunedain village. One cold day, six weeks after their arrival, Hallas along with Turgon and Baranor arrived looking tired and cold. They were brought in to the fire and given something warm to eat. The three Rangers greeted Brenna and her party in surprise. When they heard that she would be traveling North they looked to their kinsman Ohtar for answers. He explained to them what would be happening now and took the time to introduce his betrothed formally to them. They warmly and happily congratulated the two and welcomed her into their fold. They relayed their news of further disappearances and issues with the Shadow Wraith.

Brenna and the group made plans to travel North with the Rangers leading them. Ohtar seemed thrilled to show Raina and the girls his homeland. Brenna smiled as he proudly told them of his home and people. She watched as Turgon and Baranor added bits and pieces while talking with them. Alanna and Beatrice were certainly taking a shining to the young men. They were kept under the careful and watchful eyes of everyone.

She knew that sooner rather than later they too would approach the guardians of the young women to ask permission to court and later pledge their troth with them. Brenna smiled softly knowing that they would be happy together. Under the just and fair rule of Aragorn the Old Kingdom to the North would be restored to much of its former glory as he reunited the two.

It was one morning in early March when the weather finally seemed to be taking a turn for the better. Brenna looked out at the Valley around her and breathed in deeply. Change was coming and she knew that they would need to be moving out soon. She was dressed in a thicker elvish style of dress with a warm woolen Rohirric cloak snugly wrapped around her shoulders. She leaned against one of the nearby columns in one of the higher rooms of the Last Homely House.

That was how Elladan found her some time later. He approached her with a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. Here she was his other half. She was a complete contradiction to everything that an elleth or a lady should have been. She blended the two worlds of elves and man together and passed between them easily. He walked to her side and wrapped his arms around her and held her back to his front looking out over the Valley with her. They stood in silence for a while before he finally quietly addressed her.

"Is everything alright melamin?" he asked her softly.

She nodded her head and turned to look at him. "Yes everything is fine, though it is time to make preparations to leave. Change is on the wind," she told him quietly. "We will need to leave by the end of the week and make our way to the Dunedain village."

He nodded as he looked down at her for a moment. Elladan kissed her brow gently and turned to look back over the Valley that had been his home for many long centuries. It was a relief to him that this would be their retreat and home off and on over the years. Though it would sadden him to leave it behind, he was ready to follow wherever his lady would lead. She was his home now; everything else didn't really matter to him.

Brenna sighed and leaned into his embrace for a while longer. The two reluctantly stepped back and then made their way back down to where the others were surely assembling for lunch. She looped her arm through his and allowed him to lead her through the maze of corridors. Humming softly along the way she took comfort in his presence and felt secure and safe.

They entered the dining hall and were beckoned by the others. Elladan escorted her to her seat and took his place beside her. Brenna relayed her plans and news to the others and plans were immediately made for the company to set out at the end of the week. Messengers would be sent to Rohan, Gondor and the other realms of the free-folk of Arda. Brenna would be on the move and making the necessary preparations for the battle that was to come.

After a flurry of activity over the following days the group was saddled up and ready to move out. Lords Celeborn and Glorfindel once again stayed behind to hold the elvish realm should the worst come to pass. Three quarters of the elves from Valinor would stay with them to help protect the realm, while Angrod and a mixed group of the elves from Valinor would accompany Brenna to the Dunedain village.

Brenna smiled sadly as they left the elvish dwelling. Though Elladan and Elrohir knew the way better than any other, the Rangers of the North led them deep through the wilds to the village that had been kept secret and safe over the centuries. Through the rugged terrain, they traveled for another month before they reached the hidden village. Along the way they met and greeted many other Rangers. Word had long since been sent ahead of their coming.

Brenna and the girls had traveled the long and rough miles protectively surrounded by the members of her Guard and the others traveling with them. There were a few times that they heard wolves and orcs in the distance, but they were far enough away that they didn't cross paths for which they were all thankful.

Brenna's hood fell away from her head, exposing her to the view of the Dunedain as she rode into the center of the village with the others. There were murmurs in the crowd as she dismounted and held the reigns of Hiril. She turned and murmured her thanks to her four legged companion. Raina stood nearby holding Ash and the other girls were next to her, though Turgon and Baranor had come back to help them, much to the amusement of Brenna. Oh it would be no time now before they approached the guardians of the girls to make their plea to court them. Both girls were now nearing their next birthday putting them at nearly sixteen. An age that was appropriate to start the courting process.

Brenna looked around and noticed that many were throwing speculative looks towards herself and her companions. Halabard came forward and greeted them warmly. He clasped Elladan and Elrohir's forearms in a warrior's greeting. He turned and greeted those he knew in a similar fashion before he made his way through the crowd to where Brenna was. He nodded to her and bowed his head to her respectively. She grinned at him, returning the gesture before pulling the startled man into a hug. He laughed and returned it. She spoke with him quietly and asked how he was doing. With a smile that seemed to make him look a full decade younger, he nodded to a woman who was standing to the side watching curiously. He brought Brenna to her and introduced his lady wife Meredith. Brenna smiled and hugged the woman in greeting, congratulating both of them.

Brenna beckoned Raina and the girls over. She introduced them to Halabard and his wife. Oriel came to bring the younger girls to where they would be lodging for the duration of their stay. Brenna stayed with Halabard, telling them that she would catch up with them. Seeing his curious expression, she quietly explained to him and his wife who the girls were and what had happened to them. Turgon and Baranor who had not heard the story listened on with great sorrow and anger. They both turned to watch the young women walking with Raina and Oriel happily as they looked around the settlement curiously. They vowed that no harm would come to either of them again if they had any say about it.

The two young Rangers turned to Brenna. She looked at them seriously for a few moments, making them squirm uncomfortably. Halabard watched the interaction curiously. Ohtar stood nearby and grinned before schooling his features to match Brenna's. He and Elladan stood next to Brenna and regarded the younger men.

"Should anyone wish to court and woo Alanna and Beatrice, it will be with their consent," Brenna began firmly. "I will not make the decisions for them, however with that said, it must be known and clearly understood that the girls cannot wed until they reach their eighteenth birthdays. The can become betrothed on their seventeenth birthdays, but before that is out of the question."

Halabard looked confused at first, but then he looked at his younger Rangers. It dawned on him that these young men intended to pursue the young charges in Lady Brenna's care. His wife smiled softly at the young elleth. The two took an instant liking to one another. The group shared news and their accounts of what had transpired since they last saw each other. The Dunedain listened carefully as Brenna explained what she had seen and what she knew. Many were relieved to know that help would be coming and that their king and chieftain hadn't forgotten about them.

Brenna was escorted by Elladan to where she and the other ladies would be staying. She was startled to see that it was a dwelling that was slightly larger than the others. He explained to her that this was the house of Aragorn and his kin. He had sent word ahead and insisted that his sister and her ladies should stay there. Brenna relented, knowing that Aragorn was honoring her and took his role as her older brother seriously. She smiled softly looking around the dwelling. It was warm and homey, but she could easily relate it to Aragorn and imagine him staying here.

She watched as Elladan led her through the cottage with a familiarity and an ease of someone who had been there before. He pointed out where things were while explaining to her that this was the main village of the Dunedain, where the women and children would stay and that there were various other locations and camps in which the Rangers often stayed so as to keep their village and home safeguarded. He leaned back against one of the counters in the kitchen as he spoke. Brenna went over to him and smiled. She wrapped her arms around his middle and rested her head on his chest listening to his steady heartbeat.

"I'm glad that I got to come here before it gets bad," she murmured into his chest. His chuckle rumbled in his chest and sent shivers down his spine. "What's so funny?"

"Love you're a marvel to me," he told her affectionately. "I'm glad that you could see this and be here too. This place gave Elrohir and I an escape and brought us comfort when our mother sailed to Valinor."

She heard the ache and sadness in his voice and gave him a comforting squeeze. "I'm sorry about your mother Elladan. We'll see her soon. Right now she and your father are spending time together and she's been reunited with her own mother as well. Soon my love, we'll be with them before you know it," she assured him.

Elladan closed his eyes and wrapped his arms tighter around Brenna. He leaned down and rested his cheek on her head and took comfort in her embrace. Breathing deeply he took in the slightly floral scent that was uniquely Brenna. He held her to his chest and relished the feel of her softer, smaller frame against his own.

They were interrupted by someone clearing their throat. Elladan opened his eyes and stood straight to see his brother watching part in concern and part amusement. Elladan nodded to his brother, letting him know that he was fine. Brenna stepped back to see that the others had come to check in on her. She blushed slightly, knowing that they weren't in the most appropriate position, but it was completely innocent.

With a smile she greeted her friends and they all sat down at the worn kitchen table together. Oriel smiled softly at her young friend and nodded in understanding. Angrod stood somewhat to the side and watched the interaction between this close-knit group that consisted of Brenna's female companions and her Elvish Guard. He realized though that this closeness also extended to the other members of her Guard as well. She regarded them as her family and would do just about anything for them. By default he was now part of this group because of his fëa- mate. His gift and blessing from the Valar, sat across from Brenna with such a quiet look of contentment that it made his heart swell with love for her.

They sat around the table talking about what was to come next briefly before Eothain knocked on the door and came in with the original members of her Rohirric Guard. They were coming to check on their young charge and make sure that she was settled in for the evening. Brenna smiled to them in thanks and assured them that she was well. They nodded to her and took their leave to return back to the nearby area that they were staying.

Halabard and Ohtar also stopped in with Turgon and Baranor to make sure the ladies were fine. Brenna grinned and nodded to them. She told them that they were well and thanked them for their concern and hospitality. She told Halabard that she would ride out in two days to one of the nearby areas to see what she could do to help heal and nurture their crops. That she planned on healing while here startled many of them. They had briefly forgotten that she still had to travel Arda and heal the lands.

The girls spent the night in bathing and relaxing. They were recovering from their long journey. It was a sleepy, warm group of ladies that finally retired for the evening and slept soundly through the night.

Brenna rose with the sun and dressed in a deep green elvish tunic and leggings. She strapped on all of her weapons and grabbed one of her packs. She let the other ladies sleep in and crept quietly out of the dwelling. Making her way towards the center of the village, she walked quietly observing her surroundings. Once there she was greeted by the Elvish members of her Guard.

Elladan walked to her side and greeted her quietly. He checked her features to make sure that she was rested enough. Brenna smiled at him reassuringly and turned to the others and told them of her intention to ride to one of the nearby fields where they were going to be planting crops. The nearby Rangers and Dunedain people listened and watched Brenna curiously.

Brenna quickly had Hiril saddled and ready to ride out. She had half of her company stay with Oriel and the other girls while the other half was to come with her. She had Elladan and Elrohir lead the way, letting the Dunedain Rangers spend time with their people and help their own people. It was a short forty-five minute ride to the farmlands. The crops were planted in a nearby valley that was secluded. It sheltered their food supply from others. Nearby cattle and other livestock were given free reign over the rolling hills and meadows.

She dismounted and walked around. With a smile, she watched as Elladan and Elrohir greeted the people working the farmland with familiarity and ease. It warmed her heart to see that they got on so well with these hard working people. Elladan caught her look and flashed her a heart-stuttering smile. His eyes danced playfully and she flushed under his gaze, but smiled back at him.

When they Sons of Elrond beckoned her over, they pointed out to her where the farmers had just finished planting recently and to where they planned on planting. She walked towards the center of the field under the uncertain gaze of the farmers. They had heard of her and her deeds, but were a suspicious and careful people. They had nearly been wiped off the face of Arda centuries ago by the Witchking.

Brenna smiled at them reassuringly and continued on her way. She knew what they were thinking and why they thought that way. There was a good reason for their behavior, but they were a smart, hardworking, loyal, noble race of man. She would do what she could to help Aragorn's kinsmen.

Kneeling gently on a thick blanket that Eothain had ready for her, she let everything else around her fall away. Trusting wholly and completely in the men and elves of her Guard, she felt out with her senses. She buried her hands deep in the soil and called the water deep from within the ground. She willed the sprouts and seeds to flourish. Pushing out with her power, she healed what little was tainted in the soil. The blue glow from her hands and the pulse of her family ring was felt by all of those present. The elves kept a close watch the young elleth as she urged the crops in the meadow to grow.

Elladan knelt next to Brenna and called to her. Elrohir and Legolas also called to her, telling her to pull back before it was too much for her. Brenna pulled back and sat on her heels. The silver stars on her brow sparkled in the sun. The farmers looked around them in shock as they noticed tiny buds far and wide sprouting and growing. The blue haze of Brenna's powers spread across the entire valley.

Elrohir took her hands gently and cleaned the muddy soil from them and Elladan scooped her up in his arms. She murmured to him tiredly that she was fine, but drifted off even as he was walking to the shade of a nearby tree. Even though it was warm, there was still a slight chill in the air. They build a fire near where she was sleeping. They made sure that she was safely resting and tucked into the blankets warmly. She slept for a couple of hours before she awoke again. By then it was already getting dark and it was decided that they would stay at the farm that night.

The group set out early the next morning and waved goodbye to the farmers, but instead of turning back to the village, Brenna insisted that they go to the next fertile valley or farm. This was her routine for the next few weeks. Healing, and helping the land of this noble people to flourish. By the time the returned to the village a month had passed.

Over the next six or seven months, she took similar trips throughout the Old Kingdom. She took the time to get to know the people and to heal the hurts of the land. Taking special care with the areas that she knew to be tainted by the Witchking, she poured her powers out into the lands. A full year had passed before she had decided that she had healed what she could, while using the village as a base.

During that time Oriel and Angrod had wed and bonded with each other. Soon after Ohtar and Raina had also wed and set up house in the village. Alanna and Beatrice would now stay with them and were their responsibility. Turgon and Baranor had formally asked to court the girls, with the intent to become betrothed on their seventeenth birthdays. The Dunedain were thrilled for their kinsmen and happy that their people were still thriving despite the odds.

But all was not well during their time in the North. With each passing day, the darkness grew. The mist and shadow from the sea now stalked the lands, preying on all those that were found alone. Eventually even small groups were not safe from attack. More and more disappearances and attacks were reported. Crops were ruined, as if winter had set in early and froze the plants prematurely. The longer that time passed, the further West it was spreading. It was worrisome to Brenna, who knew that this foe was something she wasn't ready to face yet, but would need to be in the near future.

Brenna returned to the village to find that a messenger had arrived from Gondor and Rohan. The Kings would be traveling to meet up with Brenna at Weathertop in four months' time in preparation for the battle with the Shadow Wraith. They wrote to Brenna telling her that the ancient defenses were being reconstruction thanks to the help of the Dwarves. Gimli rejoiced hearing this. King Thorin kept his promise and was already there helping oversee the construction and had with him an army of dwarves waiting for the call.

She listened to the news and breathed a sigh of relief. Letting her sense slip away from herself, she scanned the area. Pulling back her eyes got wide as she looked across the camp at an obviously pregnant Raina. She smiled happily at her friend and went to hug and congratulate her. She greeted both her and Ohtar before turning to the young women in their care. Hugging each of them she asked how they were doing. They both smiled shyly and told her that they were well and would be announcing their official betrothals on their birthdays in just a few short months. Brenna congratulated them again and their young men.

Looking around she found Oriel talking with Angrod across the way and smiled to her friend. She was so happy for the couples, but worried that the coming darkness and danger would put a strain on them, particularly Raina and Ohtar. Raina would now be in no condition to travel. Brenna feared that she would not be able to make it back to the village in time to help deliver the child, but there was nothing that she could do to change that. Come what may she needed to travel south to Weathertop and meet with the others.

When Brenna expressed her concerns Raina looked sad that she would be parted from the group, but held a protective hand covering her growing child. Alanna and Beatrice would also be staying behind. They had no place fighting ancient evil; their place was beside their cousin and friend. Ohtar looked torn between duty and the need to be with his wife. Halabard seeing his uncertainty told the man that he would be among those left behind to protect their people. Halabard was leaving him in charge of their people in his stead.

Brenna and her company immediately turned back to their homes of the last seven or so months and began packing their things. Brenna meticulously packed away the few things that she kept in the cottage Aragorn allowed her to use. It was fairly lonely and empty for her when she stayed there now that the others were staying with their families, though more often than not Oriel and Angrod stayed in one of the other rooms with Brenna staying in the main room so she wasn't alone. When she had all of her gear, she went room to room checking and making sure that nothing was left behind or out of place. Oriel and Angrod had all of their things waiting by the door.

Elladan and Elrohir had come to help her check through the house and the get her gear. She had two packs for her saddlebags and a third, smaller bag that she wore on her back with her quiver of arrows. She began strapping on her weapons and pulled a cloak on. With one last look at the cottage, she left and walked to where Hiril was waiting. Eothain smiled reassuringly to her as she saw that her entire company was indeed ready to go within two hours. The villagers had amassed enough supplies and basics to get them by for the time being.

Brenna hugged her friends and whispered to them to stay safe. Placing her hand over Raina's growing bump, she whispered blessings of the Valar and her hand flared faint blue. Closing her eyes she willed the child to be strong and prayed for an easy pregnancy and birth for her friend who would have to face it without her. With a smile she pulled back and grinned at Raina.

"All is well my friend," she assured her and Ohtar. "Would you like to know what you're expecting and when?"

By now the others were nearby and listening. The couple looked at each other and nodded to Brenna with excitement sparkling in their eyes. Elladan placed a hand on her shoulder and grinned down at her. She smiled up at him in response and turned back to the expectant parents.

"Come late fall, you'll welcome the next generation of Rangers," she said. "You'll have a happy and healthy sun this time, but a daughter the next. Eventually you'll have five children; three boys and two girls."

Ohtar looked elated and hugged his wife to his side, placing his much larger hand on her bulging stomach. Raina smiled happily up at him and put her hand over his. The world dropped away from them as they silently celebrated the happy and hopeful news.

"Tis happy new indeed Lady Brenna," Ohtar finally said. "Thank you for your blessings and the happy tidings. Be safe my friend. If you're ever in the North again, you'll always be welcome. If you have need of me, just call and I'll be there milady."

Brenna smiled and nodded at them before turning to mount Hiril. She waved to her friends as they turned to leave. They rode out and made their way south. It was a long trek through the wilderness. The Rangers led them in circles and a zigzag pattern so as not to give away the location to their village and to protect their people. Brenna prayed to the Valar to keep them safe.

It was a month before the saw Weathertop on the horizon. Brenna smiled in relief as they neared it. Even in the distance she could see that the mighty watch tower was once more taking on its former glory. The group spurned on their horses with renewed energy, set on making it to the watch tower before night fall. Long hours passed before they finally neared the encampment that was established around the foundation of the restored tower.

Heralds sounded, signaling their approach and they were greeted warming by the rather large mixed group that had amassed there. There as promised, was an entire eored and the King's Guard from Rohan led by the King himself. Aragorn had answered the call himself with nearly one thousand Gondorian knights, knights of Dol Amroth, and Rangers of Ithilien. A large party of dwarves was present lead by King Thorin III. Brenna saw that there was a large party of elves as well with all of the different clans present. She sagged with relief in her saddle seeing that they indeed had an army ready to fight the Shadow Wraith.

Brenna dismounted and was swung into a hug by Aragorn before being passed to Eomer. She laughed happily seeing them. Stepping back she allowed them to greet their kinsmen and watched as Gimli heartily clapped his cousin on the back. Watch quietly she watched the elves of her Guard greet their kinsmen as well. Under different circumstances this might have been a wonderful celebration, but the reality of their meeting had Brenna shaking.

She quietly grabbed her packs and let one of the Rohirrim take Hiril to be kept with the other horses. Elladan had made his way to her side and noticed that she was lost in thought. With a steadying hand on the small of her back, he gently led her to where she would be staying. Brenna was shown to a small tent that had been erected for her use. She stored her things and freshened up with the water basin that had been provided. Changing from her travel worn and weathered clothes, she pulled on a fresh tunic and made her way back to where the others were sitting around a campfire.

Aragorn listened as Halabard had filled them in on what had been happening in the North and of the attacks by the Shadow Wraith. He nodded to Brenna in thanks as he heard of her aid to their people. They all cheered happily when they heard the Ohtar and Raina had married and were expecting a son in the fall. There were congratulations called out to Oriel and Angrod on their bonding as well. When they heard that the young girls Alanna and Beatrice would be officially betrothed to two of the Dunedain Rangers in just a few short months, there were happy exultations given. The people that knew of the girls and what they had been through were truly happy that they have found peace and happiness in their lives.

Brenna smiled tiredly to group. Aragorn and Eomer looked at their young sister-friend in concern, but she waved it off telling them that she was fine, just tired. They regarded her carefully and nodded slowly to her, not quite believing her, but letting it go for now. Elladan also watched her carefully, trying to discern what might be bothering her so much.

Brenna sat back leaning against a log and gratefully accepted a bowl of stew. She ate the warm food and sighed happily. It had been a long hard journey for her thus far, making her truly appreciate the luxuries and small things in life. When she was finished someone came by and took her bowl and spoon to be cleaned later. She drew her cloak tighter around her shoulders and leaned back against the log where she was sitting. Looking up at the stars in the sky she hummed softly to herself. Her tune was not as happy and light as it once might have been. There was a sadness and haunting quality to the sound.

The sad sound to her voice caused an ache in Elladan who didn't know what was wrong or how to fix it. All of those present who heard it seemed affected by it. Oriel looked heartbrokenly sad at her friend. Angrod looked at the young elleth in concern. There was something obviously bothering her. When Elladan could stand it no more, he stood and went to her side where he knelt next to her and took her hand in his own.

"Melamin," he said softly. "What is bothering you Brenna? If there is something that can be done to take this sadness away from you, we'll do what we can to help."

Brenna looked at him with dull eyes. "I'll be fine. No really," she assured him and the others. "I will be fine. I'm tired my friends."

He looked upset that she was holding back from him, but she squeezed his hand and nodded to him that she wanted to speak to him alone. Catching on quickly he stood and offered her his hand. The two left the main group to walk through the camp to talk with one another. They walked in silence for a time and Brenna drew comfort and strength in his presence.

"It's not that I'm unwell melamin," Brenna said quietly. "I'm struggling to see what is to come and how it is that I'm supposed to face the Shadow Wraith and defeat it. I cannot see and I'm scared Elladan."

He stopped and pulled her to his chest and held her. "We'll get through this love," he assured her. "Perhaps when you sleep tonight you should seek the council of the Valar."

Brenna nodded into his chest and breathed in deeply his scent to soothe herself. They stood there under the stars for a time. He gently rubbed her back and took comfort in the feel of her in his arms. After a while he led her back through the camp to her tent and made sure that she was safely within before taking his leave. He went back to discreetly explain to the others what had happened, while Brenna readied herself for bed.

Brenna drifted off and sought the Valar in her dreams. What they showed her and what she had seen left her more shaken and trembling than before, but she would just have to trust them and hope. They assured her that she had the ability to fulfill her task. Before they sent her back, they kissed her brow and sent her with their blessings and love. Irmo lulled her into a deep healing sleep.

Sunlight filtered through her tent and Brenna realized that it was mid-morning already. She shifted so that she was sitting up and straightened her clothes. Combing out her hair, she was able to pull it back into a long braid down her back. She stepped out of her tent and made her way towards the center of camp. Smiling softly she greeted the men and elves that she met there. Taking a seat at the log that she had sat on the night before, she sat quietly eating a light breakfast.

Elladan sat beside her and companionably bumped his shoulder into hers. She smiled softly to him, appreciating that he was trying to make her laugh. She sighed and took comfort in his presence; he kept away the cold shivers that kept shaking her whole being. The Valar had given her the answer that she needed, but it did little to comfort her. She prayed to the Valar that she would be able to do what she must to face the Shadow Wraith.

The elves present could feel her fear, sorrow, and concern. Elladan looked at her sharply and felt as she pulled back and stamped down her own feels, putting on a brave face for their sake. That she wouldn't meet their eye had him feeling a cold sense of dread in his stomach.

Her friends watched her walk as if in a daze around camp in the following days and weeks. She was becoming withdrawn and withholding something from them. It scared them to see her this way. It eerily reminded them of what happened at the Black Gates. None of them would ever forget what she had done there and what she had endured. To see her thus again was terrifying them on a whole new level.

It was in the early morning hours, before the sun was up in late summer that a chilling shrieking roar sounded in the distance. They had been receiving reports of farms being completely wiped out further and further East over the past weeks. Brenna stood in the archway of the watch tower looking towards the northwest and watched in the distance as the fog rolled over the horizon. The moonlight outlined the horrifying silhouette of the Shadow Wraith that was about a days' ride away. Her whole body shook as she was seeing first-hand the sheer size and enormity of the beast. Elladan and the others had raced up the steps to see what was happening and stopped short in their tracks upon seeing the foul beast off in the distance. Many of them were slack-jawed and horrified by what they were seeing. It was picking off livestock, gobbling them whole.

It was when they once again felt Brenna's fear swamping them. They truly realized that something terrible was going to happen in the near future. Elladan when to her side and held her to him tightly as if to shield her from the evil foe. His arms shook as he gripped her to his chest. He felt her body and limbs trembling. Swallowing his emotions he sought to comfort her and assure her that everything would be fine.

Brenna's eyes went unfocused for a moment and the Shadow Wraith snarled in the distance startling her back. She was sheet white as she watched it turn back to the West as the sun would be coming on the horizon soon. It was one of its weaknesses that she was seeing. It needed the darkness. If it was fire they would need, then it was fire that they would have. She was murmuring as much and the others were making note.

Looking at Haldir she said, "We're going to need flaming arrows again."

The elf looked shaken because the last time that she had used them she was abducted by the Nazgul. He watched as she stared off in the distance where the Wraith had gone. All of them kept careful watch over the horizon until it was completely gone.

Brenna breathed deeply and would have fallen had Elladan not been holding her up. "Easy Brenna, tell us what we need to do, please!" he urged her desperately.

Brenna looked to him and the others and nodded tiredly. She looked so scared to them. Glancing once more towards the West, she turned back and walked down the stairs where the rest of the camp was now awake. She glanced at Eomer and Aragorn grimly.

"We've got a few things we'll need to plan for and find an ideal location to set a trap or corner it," she told them tersely. "It stalks in the darkness and only attacks when the sunlight isn't bright or visible at all. We'll need lots of light and fire at ready for when it comes. There will need to archers with flaming arrows at ready, aiming for its eyes. If we can blind it, I'll figure out the next part as best I can. There's more, but for now I need to think on it."

The group went to protest but Brenna tiredly waved them off. "I don't have the energy to argue with you. What's next was shown to me by the Valar. I'm working on it and I'm sorry but I cannot tell you."

Elladan stood at her side clenching his jaw. He was fighting his every instinct to take her far, far away from this place. He fought his desire to scream and fight against this, but he knew that there was no use. His lady had a task and he could only be at her side to make sure that she made it through.

Later that day Oriel approached her friend cautiously. The two though close had grown less so over the last year. Oriel silently berated herself knowing that spending as much time with Angrod as she had done was a huge part of that reason. She smiled warily at her friend and was saddened to see that Brenna's smile didn't quite reach her eyes. It hurt her to know that her friend had become so withdrawn from all of them. They had been through a lot together.

"Brenna," Oriel began cautiously, "can we talk?"

Brenna stilled in the task of sharpening her blades and turned to her friend and nodded. "Of course, what do you wish to speak of Oriel? Is everything alright?"

"That is what I've come to ask you my friend," Oriel replied honestly.

"I'm well Oriel. Once we get through this with the Shadow Wraith then we can all get on with our lives," Brenna told her quietly.

Taking her friend's hand Oriel asked, "have I done something to cause you pain or anger Brenna? I know that we're not together like we used to be, but if there's something that I can…"

Brenna cut her off and stood in shock. "Of course not Oriel! I'm sorry you feel that way. I know that things have changed and I cannot begrudge my friends their happiness. I may be a bit envious that I'm not quite there myself and won't be for another two decades or so, but in the grand scheme of things that's a blink in time. You're entitled to your happiness my friend. Pay no mind to my moods. I've got a lot on my mind at the moment."

"Brenna," Oriel said sadly, "You'll have your time mellon. Do not despair. You and Elladan already have such a strong bond that many of us envy it. Is there nothing that I can do to help?"

"I'm afraid that there is nothing that anyone can do Oriel," Brenna said looking down at her sharpened weapons, "this is yet another thing that I will have to face on my own."

Oriel stood and embraced her young friend. She had come to care for her as she would a younger sister and very close friend. Brenna had given her a chance for change in her life and had led her to Angrod. With a sigh, she pulled back and allowed Brenna to go back to sharpening her weapons. Oriel turned to leave and noticed the other elves sitting around nearby discreetly listening to their conversation.

Elladan had an especially pained look on his face hearing their conversation. Two decades for them was not a long time, but it would be difficult for them. Brenna was still adjusting to the cultural differences and learning the ways of Arda. The ways of the elves were particularly different for her and she was trying so hard to learn them. She was often found sitting with their kinsmen asking about their people and the history. They all took turns teaching her the legends and lore.

Brenna hummed softly to herself and sharpened her twin blades. She slowed in her actions as she caught flashes of what was to come. Standing shakily, she dropped her weapons and the sharpening stone. With unseeing eyes she reached out to touch something unseen. Elladan reached her side as her legs gave out and the others came closer to check on her. She trembled as they called her back to them. With a gasp her eyes cleared and the threw her arms around Elladan's neck as she shook with the terror of whatever it was that she Saw.

"Can you tell us anything melamin?" he asked her gently.

She shook her head no and buried her face in the crook of his neck. "So cold," she whispered.

Aragorn and Eomer made their way to her side and asked if she was alright. They had the fires stoked and Elladan carried her towards the warmth. Along the edges of the fire rings, large piles of wood had been gradually gathered over the passing days and weeks. Brenna's warning had been taken to heart. Legolas and the other elves were busy fetching as many arrows as they could make each day. It gave them all something to do and a rough plan.

Brenna sat securely tucked in Elladan's lap. "We have two days," her voice shook. "On the eve of the second day it will arrive and we had better be prepared to face it. We will need to stay in groups of three or more."

Her news caused a flurry of activity among the camp. The dwarves had finished the repairs to the tower and had dug a series of trenches with pikes in them. There was also additional wood and brush thrown in the trenches that would be lit on fire should the Wraith pass the first outer ring. They hoped to blind it with as much light and heat as they could.

The next two days passed far too quickly for Brenna's liking but she knew that there was no putting it off. She strapped on all of her weapons and all of the extra arrows that Legolas could provide her with. Oriel was stationed in the tower itself with some of the archers. Angrod begged her to stay away from the action and to stay safe. Brenna smiled as they embraced passionately, whispering to each other. From across the camp she shared a heated look with Elladan who nodded to her. He met her near the stairs of the tower and held her close.

"Please love, be safe." Elladan pleaded with her emotionally, "You've got to stay safe and come back to me."

"If you promise to do the same Elladan," she said to him. "I'll be fine. It will be difficult, but I will be fine. You need to listen to me…"

Her words were cut off by the horrific shrieking roar in the distance. She clutched at him and pulled him to her. Uncaring of propriety and what others thought in that moment, she kissed him with everything that she had. At first he held himself back, but his resolve snapped and he returned her kiss with fervor. He pulled back kissing her cheeks and the tears forming on her lashes.

"Listen to me Elladan," she begged him, "No matter what happens I love you. You cannot give up hope. You'll have to call me back to you and I know that you'll be terrified, but you must to have faith and not despair. The Valar will aid us."

With those words she wrenched herself from his grasp and raced across camp calling for the inner bonfires to be lit near the tower. By the time they had them going, Brenna had already leapt over the first two trenches and was now cut off from the others. Her limbs trembled and she prayed to the Valar for their strength and aid. Her voice seemed to whisper on the air, swirling around the whole army. They straightened with courage and renewed courage, but when they looked around for Brenna they could not find her. She was not in the tower with a frantic Oriel who by now was calling out that Brenna was not there.

Aragorn looked around frantically as did the others. Elladan looked around and saw the mist coming from the West. The mist was crossing the outer and first trench of five. The archers in the watch tower sent a volley of flaming arrows, lighting the outer ring. In the silhouette of the mist and flames they could see a lone figure standing between the second and third trench. Shocked cries rang out in the night as members of her Elvish Guard raced towards her.

A terrifying screech sounded and there silhouetted in the flame and mist was the Shadow Wraith. The army formed ranks, even as their limbs trembled. The elves managed to get to the second ring, but Brenna was engulfed in the mist completely.

A volley of flaming arrows was sent flying and hit the second outer trench. The flames now licked high in the trenches. Some of the arrows must have hit the Wraith because it's agonized and furious roar ripped through the air. The mist still continued towards the second closes trench, the elves ran and leapt blindly, landing next to Brenna. Another volley was fired and the third trench was lit. Brenna and her Elvish Guard were effectively cut off now.

The fire in the trenches lit up the night sky and began to burn off some of the mist, unveiling the Shadow Wraith to their naked eyes. Those near the tower and behind the trenches watched in horror as the Wraith snapped its razor sharp jaws at their comrades.

Brenna felt her Guard fall in rank around her as they faced off against this evil. She whispered to them to keep it distracted. They looked at her like she was crazy but she just nodded grimly to them. The group fanned out and began taunting it. Brenna shielded Legolas when he was lighting one of his arrows. With blinding speed he let it fly and it the Wraith directly in its right eye. The Wraith lashed out, slashing with its tail and claws in agony. It caught Telgalad with its claw, injuring him. At the same time it caught Beleg with its tail in his stomach, but he was lucky that the spikes were facing the other way. It was enough of a distraction that Brenna ran forward, shocking her Guard and sliced its claw clean off, giving the others the opening that they needed to get Telgalad back. Beleg scrambled back, gasping for air. She now stood in front of the beast alone, as it had backed her against the flaming trench.

The Shadow Wraith partially blinded, flicked it's forked tongue and laughed menacingly and chillingly when it realized that it had Brenna alone. It opened its gaping jaws and came at her. Out of the shadows came the dwarves and the elves from Valinor led by Lord Glorfindel who released multiple volleys of arrows, hitting the Wraith directly, injuring it further. It may not have the thick scales that dragons typically would have, but its hide was still tough and thick. Some of the arrows however, were fired with enough force that they pierced through. Though their actions slowed down its momentum slightly, it still charged at Brenna.

During the volley Brenna tried to stay out of the way as best she could be she stumbled a bit and felt a sharp pain at her side. When the Wraith was lashing it out one of the spikes on its tail caught her on the side and giving her a rather nasty and deep cut. Turning back she saw that it was still coming at her with its mouth wide open. It was distracted enough that it didn't see Legolas shoot another flaming arrow at its other eye until it was too late. It flailed around stomping around blindly shrieking in agony and roaring. It snapped its jaws blindly, flicking its forked tongue, searching for its prey. Turning its head it went back towards Brenna who was still cut off from the others.

She pulled out her twin blades and spun them in her hands with ease. As the Wraith came at her she spun and hacked with the blades, angering it. It came at her again and she backed away a bit only to realize she was at the edge of the trench now. Its chilling laughter seemed to freeze to the very bone. There was a mighty cry from her Guard and the other elves as the launched an attack on it while it was focused on her.

Brenna rolled to the side and felt it snap its head and jaws where she had been just seconds before. She was beginning to tire and get light headed and knew that the blood loss was becoming a problem. Rolling to her feet she sheathed her daggers and took out her bow. Lighting two arrows she waited until it was coming right at her again with its mouth wide open and she fired right into its wide open jaws and hit it, bringing it down. She tried to roll out of the way, but it made one last move that prove successful. It lashed out with its claws and raked her on her left leg. It was then that the others had reached her side. The dwarves jumped on it's still twitching body and hacked away. Taking out their pain and anger on it for the deeds of the fallen Smaug and those like him.

Brenna lay on the ground gasping in pain, struggling to stay conscious. She felt Elladan holding her physically, but then she felt him reach out and hold her spirit as well. With what little strength she had left, she prayed to the Valar for help. She felt the warm flare on her brow and heard the other elves begin aiding Elladan and Elrohir to heal her and keep her anchored. Even as she drifted out of consciousness and heard the Valar telling her to hold on and fight it, she tried to reassure them that she was trying. Her limbs felt heavy and laden down with weights. Her vision swam a bit and she fought to stay with them, she clung to Elladan like a lifeline physically and spiritually.

Somehow Aragorn had made it to her side because she felt his presence and heard him scolding her for doing something so foolish. Eomer was beside him asking what he could do to help. It was then that Brenna realized that this was all sort of an out of body experience for her. She focus and willed herself to go back, she needed to go back. Praying fervently to the Valar for their aid, she felt Este and Elbereth guide her back and push her gently to her body. Even in her body she could see them kneeling next to her and touching her hands. In the background she saw Manwe walking forward telling her that it was not her time to pass that she must stay.

Brenna sighed as she felt her spirit anchored back to her body once more. She looked around and realized that she could still see the Valar aiding the Sons of Elrond and Aragorn in healing her. She looked up at Elladan and tried to reassure him that she was there. Drawing a deep breath, she gasped as the pain lanced through her side.

"Easy melamin," he told her gently, "just take small easy breaths. We've got you. You just stay with us, you hear me love?"

Brenna nodded weakly as she felt them cleaning the deep gashes and cuts on her body. She groaned in pain as they hit particularly sensitive areas, but remained conscious through it. Brenna whimpered slightly as they began to clean and pack the wounds with athelas. They bandaged her wounds and Elladan stood with her in his arms once they were done. He cradled her gently to his chest, careful not to jostle her as he walked. He kept looking down at her to assure himself that she was indeed fine.

When the fires had finally died down enough to cross over, they made their way back to the tower. Brenna's things were moved up into one of the rooms that would have normally been set aside for watch tower guards. She was placed gently on the bed that they had set up for her there.

Oriel raced into the room to help get her out of the dirty clothes and shooed the males for the time being. She gently helped wash and change Brenna before helping her back into the bed. When the task was complete, she allowed the others back into the room. Elladan kneeled by the bed and took her hand in his own.

"Why would you do such a foolish thing Brenna?" he asked her flatly. "What you did was never mentioned in the plan."

"That's because none of you would have allowed it or agreed to it," she gasped out. "It had to be this way. Had it gotten any closer it would've taken down the tower and all in it would have been lost. Had it not been so distracted it would have…"

She gasped again in pain, her eyes silently begging him to understand as the tears were now flowing freely down her cheeks. She saw horrific images flash in her mind of the decimation and destruction the Wraith would have wrought had it gotten too close to the tower. He carefully wiped her cheeks and kissed her brow.

"Rest love," he coaxed her. "When you're better we can talk about this more. We'll just have to take your work for it for the time being. However, there will not be a next time love. The next time that something like this comes up I'm hogtying you and plopping you on the next ship to Valinor."

Brenna's eyes sparkled with mirth, "There won't be a next time love, not like this."

"Thank the Valar," he said tiredly. "I can't lose you Brenna. I can't go back to simple existing. It is a bleak life without you."

She held his hand to her cheek and kissed his inner wrist. "The next time there is a confrontation, I'll not be in the middle of it. That is all that I can promise you. There will be things that come up that we will need to overcome, such as the troubles to the South and East, but I will not be part of something like this or the Black Gates ever again."

There was a collective sigh in the room. Eomer just stared her down, letting her know that they would be having a discussion about her actions. The Rohirric members of her Guard looked at her, torn between wanting to lecture her and praising her courage. They settled for something in the middle, which seemed to be the general consensus.

Oriel announced that she would stay in the room with Brenna through the night for the sake of propriety because Elladan refused to leave her side, as did most of the others. They took turns checking on her. Beleg and Telgalad were brought in and put on similar beds and had their own injuries tended to, though not as serious as Brenna's.

It was a tired and weary group that finally fell asleep in the early hours of the morning. Brenna for her part drifted off into a deep healing sleep under the watchful eye of Elladan and the rest of her friends. The Valar aided her healing and kept her in a deep sleep to heal the process. They helped the others to find rest as well. It had been a long night for the army and it would take some time for them to recover from this ordeal.
