Darry's POV
Oncology ward? They were testing for cancer? Pony had cancer? No, this was just a nightmare. Pony has rubbed off on me. No, this was reality. A very painful reality. My baby brother may have cancer. I don't think it's a dream. Tears welled up in my eyes and I brushed then away angrily.
"Soda, should I call the gang?" I asked him. He shook his head. I nodded. We needed to deal with this alone. We would call them when we got home. Hopefully to give them good news that Ponyboy just had a fever.
It's just a fever or a cold, just doing tests. They are just overreacting, he was jumped so that's where the bruises came from,I told myself.
Ponyboy's POV
I woke up with a splitting headache and saw Darry and a doctor talking. The doctor was I was awake and smiled.
"Hello, Ponyboy. I'm doctor Warner. Would you like to know your test results?" He asked politely. I nodded and he continued.
"Well, for starters your bone marrow results are odd. You're white blood cells count is not normal. It is very high. The cells are not fully developed. " I tuned out the rest until I heard,"I am truly sorry to say this but you have acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Otherwise known as ALL." My heart stopped. Cancer? No. Please let it be a nightmare.
Sobs racked Soda's body next to me. I let my own tears slide down my pale face.
"No." I murmured, out loud on accident.
"What honey?" Darry asked softly.
"It isn't true. It's just a cold or maybe even bronchitis but I don't have AAL or leukemia or anything. I'm fine!" Of course I sent myself into a long cough that racked my slim body.
Darry shook the doctor's hand.
"I'm sorry. Should we talk treatment? We caught it in an early enough stage where there is some hope." Doctor Warren told us. Darry looked at me and I nodded.
"There are many options. Steroids, bone marrow transplants, stem cell transplant, and radio therapy. The most effective is chemo therapy but has many side effects. Nausea, fatigue, headaches, muscle pain, loss of hair, and appetite loss. The most common are just fatigue, loos of hair, and nausea."
"Wait what? I'm going to lose my hair?" I asked appealed. My hair was so tuff. It was my greaser pride. I couldn't lose it.
"Only if you chose chemo therapy." Doctor Warren told me evenly.
"Yeah, it gives me a better chance." I told him and Darry nodded his agreement.
The doctor nodded,"Good choice." Darry and the doctor shook hands and we walked out.
I thought I would never sleep, but I was sick and I fell asleep immediately fell asleep when I climbed into our old beat up orange Ford. Soda wrapped his warm arm around me like we were in our bed and I snuggled into his warmth, and dreamed of a time when our parents were alive and I was just a carefree twelve year old who was disease free. Unfortunately, my daytime troubles couldn't leave me even in dreams and my dream soon turned into a tragic and terrifying nightmare.
Soda's POV
Ponyboy fell asleep peacefully on my shoulder. Peacefulness was short lived when he started thrashing around, sweat beading his warn forehead. I murmured comforting words in his ears as I lightly shook him awake.
When he sputtered awake he starts to cry.
"Oh Soda, I remember. I had died. I won't die, Soda, will I?" He asked between sobs.
"We won't let that happen." I lied, I couldn't promise that and that's what's scared me out of my wits. The fact that I couldn't save my baby brother from the disease raging inside his body, waiting to possibly consume him and kill him.
A/N: Please review ;) Sorry for the shortness, I'm tired.
