I looked at my cousin, sitting between the two boys who apparently were on a fight for her. She looked uncomfortable and I have to admit that I didn't blame her.
The movie was too violent for my liking, too bloody and it actually made me sick. Mike, Bella's colleague, happened to share of my opinion and couldn't help vomiting as soon as we left the room.
"This movie sucked" Jake said while we waited for the Newton kid. "Did you see that blood squirting twenty feet out of the main character?"
"Totally fake." I said, laughing with him.
"I never let you choose a movie again." Bella said, laughing with us.
Mike came back apparently feeling better. "Wow, what a movie!" Everyone eyed him with a "are you serious?" look. Well, everyone except Bella, she didn't want to hurt her friend's feelings.
"The movie sucked. And you have a very weak constitution. What kind of man are you? "
I wanted to laugh at Jake's words but at the same time I felt pity for Newton.
"Come on, all that blood... Didn't it make you feel nauseous at all?" Mike asked, looking at Bella and me for support.
Jacob stepped forward, getting closer to the blonde boy. In that moment I was able to see how tall the younger boy was. He was all buffed and only 16.
Bella and I shared a look before Jake pushed Mike violently.
"Hey Jake, calm down." Bella said, reaching for his arm. "Wow you're burning!"
Mike looked at me and I rolled my eyes, helping him up. In one thing I had to agree with Jacob. What kind of man was he?
"We should go." Jake said, still very upset.
"What the hell was that?" I eyed Bella with concern, seated at the bottom of her bed.
She shook her head, resting against the pillows. "I've never seen Jake like that. Should I call him?"
I looked at the digital clock in her bedside table. "Hum… If I were you I'd call him tomorrow. Let him calm down first."
Bella turned her gaze to the window, an expression of concern crossing her face.
"Bella..." I called, making her turn her attention to me again. "Do you want to talk?"
I didn't need to be specific, she knew what I was referring to.
"I… I don't know. Maybe… maybe it will be a good thing."
I nodded, trying to encourage her to open up with me. "I know we are not as close as we used to be but you can talk to me. I'm a good listener." She sighed, still deciding if she should speak her mind or not. "You know your dad asked me to come here to spend time with you. But I will not tell him about our conversation if you choose to speak. It's girl talk." I winked, trying to enlighten the mood.
"I miss him… a lot. Since the day he was gone… I feel like someone ripped my heart through my chest."
I paid attention to what she was saying. Bella was very fragile and it was easy to say she was deeply in love with this guy.
"What's his name?" I dared to ask. It didn't seem to disturb her, at least not more than she already was.
"Edward." Her voice was filled with pain, sorrow… I couldn't even describe it myself.
"I know it hurts but you have to move on. You have to consider the fact that maybe he's not coming back. You can't wait for him the rest of your life. You had your time to grieve, now it's time to open a new door, to follow your path."
Bella eyed me through her lashes but didn't say anything. I knew that perhaps my words were painful to hear. I was not very good with those talks but I tried. I tried to make her realize she was wasting her time…
"Why don't you go visit Jake tomorrow? You know, I think he likes you." A grin escaped my lips and she immediately shot daggers at me.
"Don't tell me you were not aware of that! He was all over you during the movie. The Newton kid was really upset with –"
"Jake's my best friend." She interrupted. "I can't lose him."
She wiped a tear that insisted on running down her face and that made me even more protective towards my cousin. She was my friend, but more than that, she was family. I hugged her tightly and rubbed her back.
"You won't lose him Bella. I promise. Everything is going to be okay." I rocked her back and forth like a baby, as if she was the younger sister I never had.
"Thank you Eva." She tried to smile but failed completely.
"Get some sleep. Tomorrow is another day, I'll go with you to Jacob's if you want."
She reached for the table lamp and turned it off as I exited the room.
I was almost asleep when my phone ringed.
"Hello" I said with a sleepy voice, not bothering to take a look and see who was calling.
"Hi love." Alex. With all this mess I forgot to call him.
"Oh I forgot to call you. I'm sorry, but today was one of those days…" I said, still sleepy.
"Want to talk?" Dealing with Bella was hard. All those negative emotions she had inside of her needed to be set free. But I ended up being the one to absorb them.
"No, it will only feed the bad energies." I giggled, happier now that I could hear my boyfriend's voice. "But what about you? How was your day?"
"Crap!" I heard him say.
"Alex, is everything okay?" At that moment I was already seated in the bed, lying against the headboard.
There was a lot of noise on the other side of the line. Music was playing and Alex kept swearing for about two minutes.
"Sorry love, spilled beer on my settee"
I rolled my eyes. It was typical of Alex.
"You scared me, idiot."
He chuckled and I heard him light a cigarette. "Still smoking?"
"You know I won't quit." I could picture him shrug and that made me smile. I knew him too well. Although we fought sometimes there was something about him that made me want him even more. Maybe it was his rebel side. He was charming but at the same time a bad boy. He had the soul of a poet, very creative and deep.
"Love, are you there?" I immediately shook my head, coming back to reality again. "Sorry, I was trying to picture you. Got distracted."
I heard him chuckle again. I loved that sound. "How long are you staying?"
The truth was, I never thought about it. "Hum… until Bella is okay I guess."
Silence. Was he mad? "What about the university?"
"Well I'll get back in time for that. I can't stay my whole life in Forks. Besides, I need to be by your side. You know, I kind of understand Bella's pain now. She loves this Edward so much… If I were in her shoes I think I would behave exactly the same way."
"Is that supposed to make me happy?" Alex said before inhaling his cigarette.
"I don't know. It's supposed to make you realize how important you are to me."
I heard him exhale and take a sip of beer probably. "I love you too."
"See, that was easy." A yawn escaped my mouth and I looked at the digital clock on the bedside table.
"You should get some sleep. We'll talk tomorrow."
"Goodnight Alex" I said, another yawning escaping through my mouth.
"Goodnight love."
I totally adored when he called me that. With a sigh I laid my head against the pillow one more time and soon fell asleep.
