So this is a one shot based off something I saw on my tumbr dash a while ago. I've been in a huge writing slump lately, and instead of berating myself for not updating my other stories, I'm going to pat myself on the back for getting the motivation together and kicking my depression aside long enough to write this. Yay me.
She had never seen this room before. Usually when Tonks visited number 13 Grimmauld place, it was strictly for business purposes only. She always managed to sneak away and do a little exploring here and there though, being the tricky girl she is.
It was hot outside, but very cool in the darkened halls, due to magic or the dark drapes covering every window, Tonks couldn't decide. She spent her morning bothering Remus with spot on impersonations of not only all the Order members, but all the Professors at Hogwarts (including Remus himself), many of the Wizards shown on the chocolate frog cards, and even gave some of her best creature impersonations.
Remus, who was already very worn out and tired, tightly asked her to "please go play somewhere else" and that he was "very tired and needed to relax before the meeting".
Dejectedly she wandered the halls of the enchanted house, mocking the portraits as she walked past them. She realized she had wondered into the west wing. The first door to her left was open just an inch, so she decided to poke her head in for a peek. In the far corner of the empty room was a bookcase. She never really bothered to look through the rooms in this part of the house, because Sirius always told her it was all empty.
But this room was certainly not empty. Curiously, she ran a finger down the spine of the thickest book. Seeing no title, Tonks pulled it from the shelf and plopped it down on the floor, coughing as the dust flew up around her.
Opening the cover, she quickly saw it was a photo album. But there was only one picture in it, smack dab in the middle of the first page.
The picture showed Harry, back in maybe his third or fourth year. He was walking towards the camera, broom slung over his shoulders and glasses askew.
The real Harry wasn't supposed to arrive until tomorrow, and she was all out of things to do. Suddenly, she had a brilliant plan.
Tonks concentrated on the photo, enjoying the rush of magic as her hair darkened and stuck up all over the place. Her nose elongated and her jaw became squarer. It felt a little odd as her shouldered broadened, but changing the face was always more comfortable for her.
Grinning like a madman, Tonks flew down the stairs and burst into the kitchen, excited to trick Remus and Sirius.
"Well 'ello there Lupin! Good to see you Sirius! I know I'm a day early, but I wanted to see your oh so handsome faces when I-"
She stopped. Both men had gone pale as the full moon. Remus dropped the cup of tea he was about to take a sip of, and didn't even flinch when it shattered all over his shoes.
Sirius took a slight step forward, hand stretched out, as if seeing someone come back to life.
And that's when it clicked.
The eyes were all wrong.
If anyone is confused (and you might be. I might have been unclear and wonky in my writing. If so I apologize) the picture was not of Harry, but of James, which is why Lupin and Sirius reacted so harshly.
This was all done on my phone in one go, so I apologize for anything seeming off. As I was writing I realized it wasn't my usually style of writing, but I kept going because I wanted to see where it would go.
Thanks for reading! If you have any ideas for a one shot or story, please don't hesitate to tell me! I'm always looking for new ideas!
