About: Katie's pregnant! There's just a small problem... Travis isn't quite ready to be a father. Does Demeter have to make an appearance to get him to face his fears?
Time: Approximately ten to twelve years after the Giant War.
Travis' POV:
I watched as Katie lay sleeping deeply on the couch. Her stomach had started swelling more and more since she broke the news.
Not that she looked fat. To me, Katie Gardner was still as beautiful as ever.
I glanced at my suitcase. Katie was better off without me. She didn't need me weighing her down.
You see, I have a little problem... A few weeks ago Katie had broken some news to me. She was pregnant.
With my baby.
I had freaked out. On the inside.
I knew Katie was scared this was going to happen. I was going to leave her. She knew I wasn't ready to have a child.
I peeked at Katie again. She looked so peaceful. I felt guilty for leaving her when she was so fragile.
I closed my eyes as a painful memory crossed my mind.
"Travis... I need to talk to you." Katie said.
I turned around from my desk.
"Uh, oh." I teased. "That can never be good." I reached out and swung Katie onto my lap.
She didn't giggle like she usually did. Instead, she had a worried look on her face.
I frowned. "Katie-kat, what's wrong?"
She turned and buried her face in my chest. "I'm so sorry. I never meant for this to happen." she whispered.
I could tell Katie was close to tears. I lifted her chin my index finger. "What is it?" I asked softly.
"Promise me you won't get mad." she mumbled.
"Of course not. Unless you threw away my pick-pocketing kit." I nuzzled her neck.
Katie shook her head. She hadn't even broken a smile. Now I was getting worried.
Katie curled up in my lap and whispered something. I leaned in. "What?"
A slow tear slipped down Katie's cheek.
"I'm pregnant." she said simply. Her eyes brimmed with tears.
My heart stopped. It felt like the whole world was spinning. "What?"
"I'm having a child." Katie explained. "Your child." she added.
My jaw dropped. "Really?" I asked. My voice cracked. "I'm going to be a father?"
I must have looked scared because Katie burst into tears. "I'm sorry! I'm such a slut! Please, please, please don't leave me! I wouldn't be able to take it!" she sobbed
I hid my face in Katie's neck and didn't answer. This just caused her to get even more hyped up.
"I love you, Travis." she murmured. "I need you. You-you can't leave me. You can't go. I-I know you're not ready. But please. Please stay with me. We can work this out together." she cried. Tears endlessly streamed down Katie's cheeks.
"Shh." I finally found my voice. "I'm not mad. And i'm not leaving. I love you too, Katie-kat. I'll do whatever's best for you. We'll figure this out together."
Katie looked up at me. "Promise?"
"I promise."
I don't think I'd ever seen her happier.
I sighed. Why stay when I was going to be no help?
Okay, so I totally lied to Katie, but that's what I'm supposed to do. I'm a son of Hermes, liar supreme.
I walked over to the couch and pressed my lips to Katie's forehead. "I love you." I whispered. "I always will."
I reached over to pick up my suitcase when a voice interrupted me.
"Oh for gods sake! I was hoping I wouldn't have to do this!"
I spun around. Katie's mother, Demeter, stood in front of the door to my little apartment.
"Uh, hello Lady Demeter." I stammered out.
She glared at me. "Remember when I told you there were rules to dating my daughter?"
My eyes widened. Oh yeah, I remembered. It was scary. Trust me, no one wants to be in a protective-mom position.
"Um... Yes."
"Do you remember what I said?" Demeter looked like she was on the verge of turning me into corn... Or something.
"Ye-yes." I was surprised I hadn't been stuttering until now.
"Well obviously not!" she cried.
I shot a look at Katie. I had promised Demeter that I would protect Katie. I was doing that.
Right?
Don't look at me like that! I'm trying to help her!
You know what? I'm just going to ignore you.
"Travis... Would you care to explain yourself before I blast you?" Demeter gritted her teeth. She looked so much like Katie.
"It's for the best." my voice was surprisingly steady. "I'm trying to help her. I'm no use here." I murmured.
"Help her?" the goddess of agriculture cried out. "How would you help her by breaking her heart?"
I winced. "I'm just going to get in the way! Katie's... Katie's amazing and I love her, but I know she's better off without me."
"Maybe she is." Demeter's voice was deadly cold and calm. I turned to her. Katie's mother crossed her arms over her chest.
I swallowed. I hadn't expected her to give in this easily.
Okay, fine. It wasn't thateasy.
I reached down to grab my suitcase.
"After all, there's tons of boys better than you."
I froze.
"What're you saying?" I shot up.
Demeter smirked. "No girl wants a boy who isn't stable." she said.
I reeled back. "I'm not drunk!" I protested.
Demeter facepalmed. "Not like that! No girl wants a guy who won't stick around!"
The blood drained from my face. No girl wants a guy who won't stick around.
It's true. I ama guy who won't stick around.
It's official. I suck.
Katie's mom glared at me icily. "She's going to find someone else. Someone better. And you'll have to watch."
It was almost like she was enjoying my pain.
"What do you mean?" I asked breathlessly. "Katie..."
"Will have her heart shattered by you. So when a new guy comes around to help her pick them up, she'll fall in love with him and out of love with you."
I felt like I had been stabbed in the chest.
The dark haired goddess in front of me shrugged. "It's your choice."
With that, she disappeared.
I slumped to the ground.
I love you, Travis.
You're the only one.
Get back here Stoll, I'm going to kill you!
Why would you do that?
Katie's laughter echoed in my head. Her teasing comments and sweet moments came rushing back at me.
I bit my lip and looked up at Katie, still sleeping soundly.
It's your choice.
I took a deep breath. With Demeter's words of wisdom floating in my head, I got up.
I picked up my suitcase and chose.
In a short while, I had unpacked my suitcase and stuck it back in closet.
I walked out to the living room. Katie was sitting up and rubbing her eyes.
"Travis..." she breathed. "Hi." she said shyly.
I grinned at her. "Hey, beautiful. Did you get a good rest?" I pushed her hair back from her face.
Katie snuggled in under my arm. "Yeah," she yawned. "It was great."
I kissed her forehead. "I'm never ever leaving you." I murmured under my breath.
"What was that?" Katie lifted her head to mine.
"Nothing." I said. "I love you." I added.
"I love you too." Katie whispered back.
Tada!
I tried to make it worth the wait. I'm sooooooooooo sorry it took such a long time.
I have two weeks till school ends and I have an essay and a slide show due by then so I'm kind of busy.
Sorry!
Q: What are the twelve Olympian major gods?
