Blind

Chapter 5: No ones home

I woke up in my bed with a huge head ache. I felt nauseous and dizzy at the moment I got up. I cover my mouth, ran out of my sanctuary and into the grenade green bathroom to puke out the remains of yesterday's dinner. Once I finished vomiting, I slid down to the floor feeling exhausted and sick. It feels like death will struck upon me at any given moment. I went back to my sanctuary and rest for a bit till I feel better. My headache is still there but nothing too bad that I can't handle.

I got up on the cold noisy floors and went to the kitchen to make something to eat. I looked into the fridge and see how little food we have left. I still feel worried about the supply but Miyagi told me not to worry. In the fridge it contains expired sour milk, grapes, two potatoes, some meat, 3 jars of tap water, 3 huge carrots, wilted spinach and empty bottle of juice. I ate the remaining of what is left of the grapes as my breakfast. As I gaze outside I noticed the truck is not there. I stop eating and panic.

"Miyagi…" I call out. No answer. I call his name again but louder. "Miyagi!" Still no answer. My never ending worries grew even more. I ran outside barefooted and call out his name several times. I began crying out his name into the wild hoping he would hear me. No one replied back to me. I fell onto the hot red dirt crying. Did he just abandon me? Did he took off and left me alone in this dessert? All these questions ran through my head. I tried to remember what happened yesterday. All I could remember was having dinner and drinking wine which explains the hang over I was having. What I don't understand is why would he leave today on Christmas day? I went back into the house and saw a piece of paper on the coffee table. I grab the coffee stained paper and read what appears to be Miyagi's handwriting.

"I went out. I'll be back soon. If you run out of food, there is can food in the basement."

I crush the paper and threw it against the window slide doors in the living room. This is fucking stupid. Why would he leave me alone all of the sudden? Also when will he be back? How long will I have to be alone in this dessert? I went to where I threw the paper and pick it up. I unravel it to reread hoping there would be a message or something that will tell me when he will be back. There was nothing else important written on that paper. I threw the paper away into the garbage can. I notice it was full. I don't want it to stick up the house by just letting it sit there.

Obviously there is no such thing as garbage trucks here in the outback but disposing garbage was the last thing I worry about. I threw it outside and went to find the basement door in the house. I could not find any latch or handle anywhere in the house and Miyagi's room is suspiciously locked. I went outside searching for a door to open for the basement. Sure enough I did. I notice a chain and a huge fat bulky rusted lock kept me from seeing what the rich treasures are store inside.

Obviously Miyagi did not think things thoroughly when he wrote that note. I went inside and looked around to find any sort of keys that could possibly lead my gateway in opening the door. I gave up on looking for keys after an hour of searching. Instead of keys, I found a huge rusty pliers behind a tool box in the office room. I went outside feeling confident about opening the basement. Clamping the pliers onto the chain, I pull all my strength into cutting the chain. Sweat drips down from my forehead to my neck. I grip the handles of the pliers with all my might. Finally I feel the chain snap. I smiled so happily not believing what I just done. I threw the pliers out of the way and open the basement doors. I enter the dark lifeless basement. Moving my hands against the wall, I was able to find the light switch.

When I turned on the light, all I saw in front of me was piles of boxes stack on top of each other. My jaw drop to the ground seeing so much stuff that happened to accumulate in this basement. I turn my attention to the right and happened to see an orange beat up ATV. I screamed in joy as if I was a child at a toy store. Along with the piles of red cans of gasoline Miyagi just so happened to lie that there was not enough gas to get out of this terrain. I ran up to the bike and see that the keys are still there sitting in the keyhole switch. I try to push the heavy four wheeler out and up the stairs but it was impossible. This thing is about 300 kilograms. How Miyagi got this damn thing inside here was a miracle. I looked around trying to figure out what I can do to make it get out of the basement. I saw ramps and an idea clicked in my head. The ramps were heavy as hell but I manage to put it onto the stairs. They don't exactly go all the way out of the stairs but it is enough to push the four-wheeler halfway. I put the bike on neutral and push it up as much as I can. It still was too heavy to push out. I gave up on this idea and try to think other ways to push this orange beast out of here. I absolutely have no strength in pushing 300 kg up the stairs. Suddenly an idea hit me when I look at the red gas cans.

I turn on the engine to see if there was any sign of life. There was none from the sound of it. I went to grab one of the cans and filled the bike up. I turned it on once more and the engine roar. I shivered from the sound of the engine coming alive. I scooted back just enough to give enough speed to go up. Once I determine it was enough, I shift gears and zoom right up. It was smooth but then bumpy once I hit the stairs. Finally I was out of the basement. I screamed out with all of my heart's content as I zoom straight a across from the basement.

"YESSS! I'M FREE! WOOOOO!"

...~...

Once I had my screaming fun, I turned around and head back to the house. I filled the ATV tank with more gas up to where it started spilling out. I went back inside the basement searching food. There was corn cans in one box and pineapple cans in another box. I didn't bother looking at the other boxes. I took the two boxes into the house. I got an old hunting grenade and brown backpack from the closet and filled it with all the necessary equipment. A yellow flashlight with extra batteries, 5 cans of corn and 7 cans of pineapple, the pocket knife I found the first day I got here, A worn out green blanket and bottles of water pill up till I am unable to fit anything else in.

Once I got everything in my backpack, I looked around in the cabinets of the office to see if there is any books I should take and in the corner of my eye I spot a shot gun. I carefully grab the shot gun and take a look at it. It wasn't the same gun that Miyagi have used to shoot the kangaroo but it was a similar brand. I looked in his desk for bullets and stuff them in my pocket.

I do not know how to handle a gun but after watching Miyagi using it, I kind of have an understanding on how to use it. The gun has a strap on it, I put it on as if it were a satchel with the heavy gun rest on my back. I went to my sanctuary, looked through the drawers to get the pieces of paper out that I have ripped from the books. I studied the animals carefully one last time before I shove them in my back pocket and head out. The combine backpack and gun weight was overbearing to carry in my shoulders. I have to tough out the heavy weight. I can gain some strength from caring all this luggage.

I looked at my surroundings memorizing them and drove off straight ahead on the ATV. I kept counting seconds in my head as I speed off into the wildness. I how long it took me to a certain point destination will be the same as I head back. I stop at a noticeable tree that can be recognizable from far distance. I memorized the number I counted in my head and took out the pocket knife. I carved the number that was implanted in my head onto the tree bark along with an arrow on which way is back to the house just in case I get lost.

I went back on the orange ATV and zoomed off to see any other distinguishable land markings I can find. After an hour, I have just carved 3 recognizable trees. Up ahead of the third three was the dried up lake Miyagi has showed to me. After examining the lake I begin to wonder where our water supply comes from if the lake here is dry. I continue on my journey examining animals and mark the ones I have seen on the rip book pages. I was unable to find another water source so I head back to the house.

…~…

On the way home I notice some strange looking dog like animals around the house. They have these big heads and small bodies. They have the color of the red dirt as if it was a camouflage to them. There were a pack of wild dogs. The dog creatures were ripping off the garbage bag that I placed outside by the porch this morning. They seem vicious and brutal with the trash. I curse myself on how stupid I was to put the trash there all day. I don't want to get attack by the dogs but at the same time I do not want to hurt them. I decided to scare them off with the gun. I got up and remove the gun from my body. I place three bullets into the slots. I raise the gun up in the air and pull the trigger. The gun shot a loud beaming bullet up in the air. The force of the shot threw off my balance. With the sound of the gun overheard into the dog's ears they ran away howling.

I let out a sigh of relief. I grab my stuff and walk to the house. I notice the slide door open. Thus drop my bag and held the gun to an aiming position. I still have two bullets left in the slot holes so if I find any dogs in the house I will probably have to kill it in order to save my life. There was trash all over the floor left by the dogs. One of the small trash cans which belongs to the living room was moving on its own. I aim toward the can but stop when the can gets knocked over by the table reviling a puppy. I

t came up to me silently. I put the gun on the table and pick up the puppy. It was very playful with me and likes to chew on my hand. I decided to keep it hoping that one day it will grow up as a guard dog for the house while I go out. That might solve the random animals to stop coming near the place. I took out the papers from my back pocket and see if this is actually a dog. It turns out it is a dingo. I heard of people keeping them as pets but I don't know if they attack people. I had a stare battle with the puppy to determine whether or not it was evil. Once I conclude this puppy is not from the spawn of satin, I named the dingo Daisuke.

"What do you think? Is Daisuke a good name for you?"

The puppy ignore what I said and peek into the cabinets to grab a box of Cheerios. He ate the whole thing and whimpers for more.

"Maybe Cheerios is a better name since you're not Japanese." I laughed as I pet the dingo.
