Chapter 2: Cat in the bag
Harvey was more angry by the fact that he hadn't seen Mike for the whole week than his situation right now. After all, Alexandra Leeds was not the one he tried to hide the truth from. They might not be best friend but they were colleagues and he respected her in every way. She tried to win this case. He tried to save his ass. They both wanted something for themselves and could not wait to see how long will the other willing to play.
"Not hungry much, Harvey?", Alexandra put down her silverware
"Not when I'm the one paying for this meal", he took a sip from his glass, "Nice choice of wine, by the way."
"Oh my, since when has you been so cheap Harvey?"
"Since I got the court order to testify next week", Harvey also put down his silverware.
The game was on the table.
Alexandra face became so serious that Harvey felt a chill ran down his spin.
"You know what he did, Harvey"
"Why do you want him to be in jail so bad?"
"He is a dirty public servant! He deserve to be jail long ago."
"Don't we all, Alex?"
"Don't joke around Harvey. You know what he did. That's why Donna and you left. You know that he..."
"Harvey!"
"Mike!"
A young blonde boy ran from the door to Harvey table with the brightest blue eye in the whole New York. Mike hadn't seen Harvey in days and lord knows how he missed his boyfriend. On the other hand, Harvey face turned completely pale. He looked like he was going to faint any minute as Mike got closer and closer to him.
"I don't know that you like this restaurant Harvey. I though you only prefer classic one."
"What are you doing here? Don't you have to deal with Louis about the tabloid?"
Harvey voice sounded so angry that Mike took a few step back. Did he make a big mistake coming here to see Harvey? Is he in the middle of something important? Mike looked around for a way out to help him and he met Alexandra' eyes.
"Won't you introduce us, Harvey dear?", Alexandra stood up and smiled at Mike
Harvey glared at Alexandra but she ignored him and kept walking toward Mike until she was in the between the two men.
"Alexandra, Alexandra Leeds. I'm Harvey ex-colleagues and he is helping me on a case right now."
"Mike, Mike Ross. Harvey's associate. Pleasure to meet you."
Alexandra offered a handshake but Harvey quickly signaled Mike not to take it. He stepped in between them but Alexandra managed to pull Mike on her side of the table first. She pushed him down on her chair and signaled the waiter to bring another one.
"Why don't you have lunch with us, Mikey?", Alexandra talked to Mike but her eyes never left Harvey face.
Mike so wanted to say no because whenever someone called him as Mikey, nothing good would happen after that. He looked exactly like a puppy being dragged into a battles of two wolves. He really should have chosen another restaurant to have lunch.
Harvey unwillingly sat down on his side and ordered a kid meal set for Mike. As much as he wanted to get out of this situation, his puppy's face is too cute to be wasted just because of Alexandra. Plus, he believed that Alexandra would not risk leaking the information outside to someone she just met like this.
"Now, let's talk business Harvey" Alexandra spoke immediately when she sat down
"Alexandra!" Harvey rose his voice "You don't have the right to tell your client's information to a third party"
"First, I'm not talking about my client. I'm talking about you and Cameron."
"Cameron? As in Cameron Dennis?", the topic suddenly became much more interesting to Mike
"And second, I'm not talking to him. I'm talking to you, Harvey."
Knowing that there was no way he could get away from this now, Harvey sat silently and listened to the woman sitting next to him as he watched the face expression of Mike across the table.
"Five years ago,", Alexandra began, "when you just graduated from Harvard. You were hired as D.A Assistant for Cameron Dennis, one of the best D.A in New York. It was no surprise that Jessica wanted you to learn from the best and you sure did. You solved 36 cases everyday. Brought 140 cases to court and won them all. One of them, The Hellen Case was the most famous not because how impressive you won it but because how easy you won it. There was no evidence to present and the defense walked away just like that. But was it that easy, Harvey?"
Mike looked at Harvey. His face was extremely calm. There was no expression of fear or even a slightest sign of being nervous.
"What can you say? I was a legend."
Mike chucked but Alexandra didn't seem to take it as a joke.
"Really Harvey?", she leaned closer to him, "Are you sure not because your precious mentor buried the key evidence of this case?"
Mike eyes were wide open. Buried the key evidence? Isn't it like the biggest crime one D.A could ever commit?
"Alexandra!"
"This is not about you and him, Harvey. It's about people who got away or blamed for what he did. You have to testify against him."
"He was my mentor, Alexandra"
"He is a criminal."
"He was my first mentor!", Harvey stood up and slammed his hands on the table, "We're done here. Let's go Mike."
"See you in court next week, Mikey", Alexandra waved as Harvey dragged Mike out the door.
"Harvey...Harvey, slow down... Harvey, you're hurting my arms"
Harvey completely ignored Mike's complain and kept dragging Mike until they were inside his car.
"My condo, Ray"
He pulled up the blind so Ray could not hear them talking but they did not talk. Actually, they didn't need to talk. Harvey could read it in Mike's eyes. He was processing the conversation back in the restaurant. For some reasons, things didn't add up right. Harvey could be in jail for the rest of his life if they actually proved that Cameron buried the evidence and Harvey, who was obligated to turn his mentor in, didn't do anything. However, if he willing to testify, it could be his only chance to get out of the life sentence. The Harvey he knew, the Harvey Mike knew would do the thing that benefited him most. But not this Harvey. This Harvey got too emotional to do the right thing.
"Harvey, was Cameron your first mentor?", Mike asked but he looked outside the car window. He didn't want to face Harvey now
"Mike, please don't go there..."
"Was he just your mentor?"
"Mike, please..."
"He was your first, wasn't he?"
"Mike!"
The conversation suddenly fell in blank space. Mike looked at Harvey and he saw a whole different Harvey Specter. Cameron was the reason behind those sad eyes? Cameron was the reason Harvey willing to put his life in danger? Now he got it. There was always a place for Cameron in Harvey's heart. A place he could never fill in.
"Do you still love him now?"
"It's more complicated than that, Mike?
"It's a yes-no question Harvey. Answer it!"
Harvey teared apart from Mike eyes. He didn't answer it. Mike suddenly felt the urge to cry. He felt like he could not breath anymore. The air was so thick. His chest hurt so much. This was too painful for him. This was too much.
"Sorry, I need some fresh air."
Mike opened the car door and jumped out. He landed on the street surface by his back but he stood up intermediately and ran away. He didn't know what he was trying to do or where he was trying to get to but he needed to get away from this pain. He could feel his tear were overflowing but what could he do now? The one he loved, the only one he loved since the death of his parents, betrayed him. Mike ran until he could no longer feel his legs. Then he stopped, sat down and cried. He buried his face into his palm and let the tears fell.
Mike cried and stayed there until the last sunlight disappeared. Right now, he had nowhere to go, or in fact, he had nowhere he wanted to be now. Sitting in the corner of a street that he had never heard of didn't sound like a bad option to him. Maybe he could just spend the night here.
"Mike? Mike Ross?"
Mike heard his name said by a very low and charming voice but he could not figure out whose voice was that. The moment Mike look up, he knew exactly who he was talking to. That Italian suit, that smell of shoes wax and that gesture when he re-buttoned his dark blue vest. Every single thing of this man spelled out the name of his student.
"I don't believe we have met", Mike wiped his tears and stood up
"No. But I have seen your picture and I believe you know who I am."
Mike nodded. He didn't even care where his man had seen his picture from or to be honest, Mike wished he would never know that.
"Good timing. I have something I want to talk to you about, Mike."
"Me too"
"Perfect. Dinner at my place, shall we?"
I know it's long but I want to give you a sense of what is happening. The next chapter will have some actions and we will see that Mike is not just a puppy that following Harvey around anymore.
