Chapter 4
Spencer broke to the surface of the blue sea and took off his snorkelling mask. Filling his lungs with fresh air he swam quickly to the beach. He was quite happy with today's specimens and photos. His first year as a full-fledged marine biologist was going good. There was, of course, a problem but he was trying to ignore it.
He waded on to the soft sand only to find a large group of girls clad in bikinis and armed with binoculars and cameras bearing towards him. His face became increasingly hot and undoubtedly a very dark shade of maroon.
"OMG! Just look at his muscles!"
"I love you, Spencer!"
"Marry me…love!"
"He's so handsome."
"Beauty with brains!"
Spencer gulped and walked towards the research centre coldly.
"He's a biologist, you know?"
"Nice ass!"
That was it. He was no longer going to walk coolly as if he was some deaf to what they were saying. He stopped walking and ran on his heels, not even taking a backward glance.
Only when he was inside the safe, girl-free zone of his research centre did he slacken his pace.
"What happened?" Mystel, a fellow biologist who was in the process of venturing out, asked.
"I uh-I.." Spencer doubled over to get his breath back.
"You look as if you have seen a ghost."
"I saw worse," blurted Spencer.
Mystel laughed, "Like?"
Spencer was about to reply but stopped. "Nothing."
Mystel stopped laughing and shrugged.
Spencer watched him walk outside, walk and not run! Why he couldn't he be as calm as Mystel? A very bad version of the voice saying "Nice ass!" passed through his mind. He shook his head trying to clear it.
Anyway, the research centre was a girl-free zone. He could walk around easily or so he thought until he came face to face with a girl.
"AAAAAAAHHHHH!"
Salima cried, "Sorry! I didn't mean to scare you."
Spencer had forgotten that Mystel's girlfriend Salima had an entry pass too. His girl-free refuge had been destroyed.
Spencer clutched his waterproof camera to his chest and tried to bypass her but Salima stopped him, "Have you seen Mystel?"
"He-he…"
Salima gave him a weird look.
"Out-out…he-he…" Why couldn't he answer her?
Salima tapped her foot impatiently.
Spencer gestured outside with his thumb and heaved a sigh of relief when Salima walked away. He reached his office and very soon he was busy studying a jellyfish tissue under a microscope.
His phone beeped announcing a new text message. He walked over to his desk and picked up the phone. It was from Emily. An invitation to her marriage ceremony.
Spencer took a deep breath. Why was the world so tough and complicated? He wished that everything was as simple as marine biology. Simple yet interesting. No silly questions, no prying eyes just solitude and calm. The sea always accepted him and the marine life never judged him wrongly. Here he was free.
Mystel knocked Spencer's door and came running inside, "I say, have you heard the news, buddy? Emily's getting married. Cool, huh?"
"Yeah!"
"You going, right?"
"I suppose so."
"You suppose, so? Obviously you have to go. Besides, we have no great work to do nowadays."
"Hmm."
"And who knows? You may find someone special there!" Mystel winked.
Spencer scoffed.
