Chapter 7

Kai closed his eyes and waited for the news to reach everyone.

Sure enough… "Kai?"

Diana stood there. There was confusion and worry on her face. Kai looked at his wife and felt a warmth inside him. Diana was wearing a dark blue sweater and trousers. Her black hair was, as usual, in a messy bun. She never tried to look good but to him she always looked beautiful. He wondered what she would say. Rather he wondered how she would say it.

"Hmm?" Kai finally answered.

"I heard…I just read…you resigned from the BBA?"

Kai's phone started ringing. The telephone in the drawing room started ringing. There were numerous beeps on the laptop as people sent audio and video requests. Diana's phone started ringing.

Kai cringed, "Let's talk where its quieter."

They walked to the mansion's beautiful garden. Diana didn't ask Kai to speak until he spoke himself. They sat on the cold garden seat.

Kai started, "You know, I hate this place." Diana looked at Kai as he gave a small, tired smile. Both of them looked at the mansion and the Abbey behind it.

It was a strange place.

"You hate it too, right?" The question caught Diana off guard. She did hate the place. It was huge and sad. Yes, sad was the word to describe it. As if somebody had died there. As if it still wanted someone to die. The Abbey was worse. The place smelled of torture and hatred. There was a bad feeling about the place. When Diana had married Kai, she had tried her best to like the place. A year later, the house still scared her. When Kai wasn't around, the mansion seemed even worse. Lonely and depressing. It was slowly suffocating her day by day.

"Yes," Diana answered simply.

"I wish you had told me before."

Diana turned red, "Sorry! I didn't want to worry you." She made a face, "How would it have looked if I had said within a week of our marriage 'Hey, Kai. Your house gives me the creeps'. I thought you liked your house."

"Voltaire tortured me day and night here." Kai looked at Diana's horrified face and smiled, "Mentally mostly."

Diana tightened her hold on Kai's hand, "I wanted to let go of this place but I didn't have the courage. Now, I feel I can," Kai said. He got up, "Your University deputation here is already over. What do you plan to do after it?"

Diana made a confused face, "I don't know. I would like to go somewhere exciting. Lots of mysteries and magic. It's childish but that's my dream. It's the reason I became a Mythology scholar."

Kai's gloomy thoughts vanished when he looked at Diana's face. "How about we go to Brazil?"

"Oh my God! That would be the best. I would love to…but you still haven't told me why you quit your job."

"You are so strange, Diana," Kai smiled, proudly. "One second all childish the other second all serious. I thought you would have forgotten about it by now. Well, I quit it because I am joining Mr. Granger, Tyson's father, as an assistant archaeologist. I asked him some time ago knowing that nobody would take on someone with no experience but he agreed. He's currently somewhere in Brazil excavating a temple or something. It would be good break from this place. What do you think? I should have asked you first…"

Diana looked stunned and then burst out laughing.

"What?" pouted Kai. "You don't like the plan?"

"No, I love it. Its just that you working as an assistant is going to be hilarious."

They walked towards the house they disliked, Kai's arm around Diana's shoulders listening to Diana talk about how she was 'absolutely in love' with Kai because he is 'so cool'.

Kai casually mentioned, "Tala is coming along with us."

Diana nodded, "That would be great. I'd better call Jennifer, though. She was already planning some matchmaking. You'd better tell Ian and Spencer that we won't be able to have them here. Wait, how about we call them along too? A couple of weeks' vacation would be great for everybody."

Kai mentally scowled. He couldn't have that many people around. It would spoil the plan. When he didn't answer, Diana said, "Hey, it's okay if we can't have them along. Don't look so…so…oop-what's-gonna-happen-now."

Kai immediately smiled, "I'm not looking like that. Of course we can invite them." In his mind he frowned. Since when did his face become so readable? Well, the plan wouldn't actually be affected if some extra people came along. In fact, they would be the perfect cover for this job. He looked sideways at Diana. What he had told her was all true. He was just hiding the reason for going to Brazil and this was for her own good. He wouldn't be able to live if something happened to him.

-At the Airport, 3:00 pm

Geoffrey asked for the hundredth time, "But, Keira, how did you know about Kai's resignation beforehand?"

The Countess smiled, "I have my ways, Geoffrey."

Geoffrey nodded grumpily. He looked at the photographs in front of him. A smiling woman with dark brown, messy hair and a scowling man whom he easily recognised as Hiwatari. So, the woman must be his wife, he thought.

The announcement came for their flight and he got up, "Come, Keira, we got to go to Amazon."
