Wow, I think that went well. Now, without further ado-
Chapter 15
Diana and Jennifer were coming back from the site. Jennifer was telling Diana about her 'great, new and amazing idea for the new book' when Diana tripped over something with a loud, "Ow!"
"I'm sorry," the 'something' spoke up.
Jennifer pulled Diana to her feet, "How many times do I have to tell you that you should look where you're going?"
"I-I…uh…I was looking. I was," Diana tried to convince Jennifer.
"Hey, hey, stop. It's my fault."
Diana and Jennifer looked at the person who had tripped Diana. It was a girl. She was Chinese or Japanese or maybe Korean. Her hair was the darkest black, shining as light hit it from different angles. Her skin had a glow to it and her mouth was what people described as a rosebud mouth. She was not very tall and really skinny.
"My name is Hina and I'm really sorry." The girl held up her camera. "I was trying to catch a butterfly shot and it was running away from me. I was crawling after it when you tripped over me."
There is something about matchmaking. As soon as you meet someone new you start pairing them off with people. It's not something you do on purpose. No, it's just happens in your brain of its own accord. The moment Jennifer saw Hina the gears in her brain had started turning and this is why the first thing she asked was-
"Are you single?"
Hina raised her eyebrows at the sudden question and looked at Diana for help.
Jennifer gave a nervous laugh, "I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to surprise you like that. It's just that I'm writing a book and its part of the research."
"You're a writer? How cool! What do you write?"
Now Jennifer loved to talk about her work. She put her heart and soul into it and though she took ages to actually show her work to people, she still liked to talk about it to a willing audience. Hina offered a willing audience.
"It's nothing great," Jennifer blushed. "I write chicklit, romance and sometimes fantasy but as I said-nothing great."
"Oh c'mon," Diana said, "don't be so modest, Jen." She looked at Hina, "She's been published. She writes the WTH! Series and they are all pretty amazing."
Jennifer fiddled with her bracelet. A writer is always awkward when his or her work is being discussed.
"No way," Hina squealed. "WTH! as in What The Heart! ?"
"Yeah," Jennifer's eyes lit up. "You've heard of it?"
"Oh My Brian! Heard of it? I love it. I can quotes words from it," Hina was beside herself with joy by now. Imagine a Potterhead meeting J. K. Rowling. Now multiply your imagination by ten. Yeah, that's what the situation was.
"Wow! Really?" Jennifer was also beside herself with joy but she tried her best to look normal. Imagine a Potterhead meeting J. K. Rowling. Now multiply your imagination by hundred. Imagine containing that much excitement under a most sober face. Yeah, that's what the situation was.
"I love you, your eyes, your hair and how you frown when you can't figure things out," Hina said in a deep voice.
Jennifer giggled, "You are really good at quoting Brian."
An hour later they were sitting at the Piranha, a kind of small super market where there was an open seating area surrounded by showrooms of clothes, music stores, kitchen appliances and tourist attractive souvenir shops. Jennifer had by now come to know that yes, Hina was single. Diana and Jennifer had done their let's-do-some-matchmaking glance at each other at this revelation.
They learnt that Hina was here on an internship with National Geographic Photography. Till now, everything had been going well. All the interns had to do was "showcase a story through your picture. Be it people, animals or plants everything is beautiful. Catch that beauty." This was why Hina had a habit of snapping her magnificent camera at an interval of two minutes.
"You do snap that a lot," Jennifer commented, sipping her Beri Beri milkshake.
Hina nodded, "There's just so much beauty in the world that I'm always worried that I'll lose some of it."
Jennifer looked around. The scene was normal. Nothing extraordinary or beautiful about it.
Diana nodded most vigorously at Hina's comment while Jennifer still tried to find that beauty that only these two saw.
After trying out different shakes and juices the girls decided to check out the shops. Well, actually Jennifer and Hina decided to check out the shops. Diana moaned about how much shooping bored her but tagged along.
The music store was the best. It had all kinds of CDs ranging from latino to pop, all at really cheap prices. The best thing about the store was that it had old records and you could actually play them at the record player. There were cassettes too. The desk was manned by a very pleasant girl called Helen. She spoke fluent English even though she was a native. She let the girls try out as many records as they liked and even danced with them.
-Post-lunch, Suite 2, Cottage 8, Iimma Hotel
Diana poked her head inside the suite that was usually occupied by the 'bachelors' a.k.a Tala, Spencer and Ian. A wave of smelly old socks greeted her. She walked inside, tripping over empty beer bottles. Somebody was going to get the whole 'alcohol is bad for health' speech from Diana!
"Spencer?" Diana was sure Spencer was inside. Tala was at the site with Kai and Ian was looking at prospective Casino locations
No answer.
The kitchen was empty too. There was a huge mountain of dirty plates and cups standing there. The smell was deathly. Maybe this was why guys needed deo. You know, as room fresheners.
"Diana?"
Diana whirled around to see a very annoyed Spencer. "Yeah, I came to talk to you!"
Spencer turned away, "I'm busy."
Diana shook her head. Everybody around her was such a drama queen. "Its really important, Spence," she sighed.
"I do not want to be matchmade," came Spencer's reply. The door banged behind him.
Diana rushed the door but the room was already locked from inside. "Spencer!"
"I'm not opening the door!"
"Well, you have to pee some time. I'll wait till you come out," shouted Diana.
"Go away."
"Won't."
.
.
.
"You still there?" asked Spencer.
"Yes. By the way, who's been drinking?"
"Its not me so spare me the lecture."
"And you guys need to maybe open the windows. The house smells of socks."
Spencer made a face at Diana through the door, "Next you'll say the dishes need washing."
"They do!"
Silence.
Diana sat with her back to the door, "Spencer, you shouldn't drink so much. There are around a thirty bottles or something here. Think about the damage to your-"
"Its Tala," Spencer settled with his back to the door.
"Tala?" Diana ran a hand over her face. Tala was obviously still depressed.
"Yeah, he looks at pictures of his wife and then he takes a swig. Again at the picture of his wife and takes a swig and so on."
"Why don't you stop him?"
"….Its the way we are. Nobody interferes in nobody's business."
"That's so wrong and so irresponsible."
Spencer shifted uncomfortably.
Diana continued, "Never mind. I'll see that he becomes fine again."
Spencer smiled. Diana's number one mission in life was to make people happy.
"So, tell me, will you come tonight for your date with mystery girl?"
Spencer heart jumped till his throat. A very bad video of how girls reacted around him played in his mind.
"OMG! Just look at his muscles!"
"I love you, Spencer!"
"Marry me…love!"
"He's so handsome."
"Beauty with brains!"
"He's a biologist, you know?"
"Nice ass!"
Spencer shivered. Bad flashback.
"Diana," he started. Kai's wife was just like a younger sister to Spencer. A younger sister he never had. This was why he was softer towards her in comparison to the others. Sometimes, however, Diana behaved more like an elder sister. The one who irritates you a lot but you still know you can go to her in times of need. Spencer knew Diana would understand that he was downright terrified of girls. He could hardly speak in their presence. When he did speak he would stutter and become a mascot for humour. He knew it was stupid to be afraid like that but try convincing your brain or heart, whatever works better, that. Sure, he wanted a girlfriend. He did want a family later in life. He had heard that everybody had a certain somebody in this world. Well, in his case, the somebody had got lost on the way. Up till now girls had behaved really badly to him. From falling at him, being clingy to actually clawing at his clothes. Spencer had understood that his type of girl was impossible to find.
He took a deep breath and started, "Diana, I know you will understand and that's why I'm telling you this. Girls…aren't right for me."
Diana's reply was a very slow, "Oh!"
Spencer waited. He just told her he's scared of girls and that's all Diana manages? A simple "Oh!". He was certainly not going to tell her about his kind of girl and the accompanying 'buts' along with it. No, he had overestimated Diana.
"Well," Diana said getting up. "Don't fear. I understand, okay? Jennifer and I…we'll find someone for you."
Diana raced to Jennifer.
"Calm down, calm down," Jennifer looked up from her laptop. "I take it you convinced Spencer to come."
"Jen, umm, you're not going to believe me but Hina is not right for Spencer," Diana told her.
"I know that. Hina is way too good to be paired off with any of these morons. But we don't have any other option. We can't let the boys win," Jennifer said, while her fingers went clickety-clack over the keyboard.
"No, you don't understand," Diana closed the lid of the laptop, "Spencer is gay."
Diana, oh Diana, when did Spencer say that?
Master of Misunderstanding I am :P
