Previously on Filling in the Blanks:
"I will, I promise" I gave him a wave good bye as I jumped away in to the surrounding trees. I found it rather strange that I unconsciously knew which routes to take to avoid being seen. I must have been doing this on a daily basis. I really should take into account all the little things I'm starting to remember. Filling in the blanks are not going to be easy, but nothing ever is. I'm taking this weekend as my last weekend to chill. With what I have in mind on how to get my memories back I had a feeling I wont be chilling anytime soon. I just hope to God that Darien will actually agree to my plan. Now what to wear today … ? I thought as I landed on my bedroom balcony.
Chapter 17
Serena's POV
I didn't quiet get the cheerful nature my mother had as she cooked pancakes on the stove. I mean it was just a normal Saturday after all. I was pretty sure it wasn't her birthday or her anniversary. So I was stumped as to what had her in such a great mood.
"Hey Mum, not that I'm complaining, but why are you in such a great mood?"
Switching off the stove and taking the last pancake off the pan and placing it on a plate, she sat next to me and placed a hand over my own.
"I'm just so happy that you, your brother and father are here with me that's all. Not to long ago, you were in a hospital bed and we feared you would never wake up. And now you're here happy and healthy and going out. I haven't seen you this relaxed and carefree for almost a year!" she said as she embraced me. Relaxed? Carefree? I am none of those at the moment! Well maybe just today. Since I did just promise my self one day to chill. I mean how bad was I before the accident? Wriggling out of my mothers hug I decided to ask.
"Mum, what do you mean by that? Wasn't I always carefree?" I asked my eyebrows scrunched together.
"Well you were, actually you always were, but just during this past year I saw a change in you. You were stressed out all the time, tired almost every single day. Your grades were more horrible than usual. And you always acted as if the world's problems were on your shoulders. But now all that's gone, your smile is brighter, the way you carry yourself was completely different to before. You've become a happier person and your grades are even up" she said with a clap of her hands. I was so confused. Here I was, trying to find my way back to who I was and here my mother sat basically telling me that what I was made me unhappy. I suddenly recalled a voice while I was in my coma.
"It's better off she doesn't remember. All she ever wanted was to be a normal girl to have normal problems " My eyes widened, someone knew what I was.
"Honey I'm sorry, I didn't mean … "
"No Mum, it's ok. Thank you" I said squeezing her hand as I abruptly stood up from the kitchen table.
"I'm late to meet Molly and Melvin, thanks for breakfast" I said as I gave her a chaste kiss on the cheek on the way out.
I slowly made my way to the Arcade. I couldn't put a face to the voice I heard. Who could they be? Why would I just want to be normal? Having these abilities were amazing. Though in super hero movies they always did portray that having super human abilities was a burden rather than a gift. Saving human kind and all certainly was a big burden.
"And you always acted as if the world's problems were on your shoulders"
Remembering my mother's recent words, it hit me and hit me hard. Was I a Super Hero? My abilities fit the equation; fast healing, speed and strength. Even if I was, who were my enemies? Thieves, criminals? Is there even any problems in the world that required such attention from a person like me? I had to tell Darien about my new findings. Biting my lip, I realised he had a twelve hour shift today. Guess it'll have to wait. A grin graced my lips as I thought about how awesome it would be to be Super Hero. I mean who wouldn't want to be admired by everyone?
"Seriously Serena, I think Allan has the hots for you" Molly whispered as we watched Allan and Melvin order our food. I rolled my eyes at her obscenely ridiculous observation. So the guy bumped in to us and asked to join us watch a movie. Classmates are allowed to hang out after school hours. It didn't mean a thing.
"Molly, please. You're making too much of a big deal out of this" I whispered back.
"Are you that naïve Serena?" she said shaking me by the shoulders.
"A guy who by the way was on a date, left his date to be yours. Does that not scream 'I'm interested'?" Molly said wide-eyed irritation laced in her voice. I gave out a sigh, annoyed at her on going battle in trying to convince me that this guy, may I add is the most popular guy in our school, actually has interest in me. I don't know what reason he had for leaving the girl that was clinging on his arm fuming on the street. I certainly did not give any indication I wanted him to join us. I was more than happy to be a third wheel.
"He is not my date Molly!" I said through gritted teeth. I felt him before I heard him.
"Who's not your date Meatball Head?" I shuddered at the name. Why does that word coming out of his mouth irritate me to no end? I slowly turned my head giving him the iciest glare I could muster. Stepping back instinctively, Darien raised both of his hands in defence.
"I …. ahh … sorry I meant to say Serena" he stuttered. That's right, be afraid, be very afraid. I narrowed my eyes him as I stuck out my tongue at his direction. He just shook his head while beaming his ridiculously handsome smirk. Who looks good smirking? Darien Chiba that's who!
"So who's not your date?" he asked as he took a seat across Molly and I.
"Behind you, to your left" I replied. Casually glancing back, Darien looked towards Allan and Melvin. He turned his gaze back to us this time with one perfect eye brow raised with a twitching grin.
"Not the nerd with glasses!" I barked
"No offence Molly" I said casually.
"None taken, he's my nerd" Molly said sighing and gawking at her boyfriend. I rolled my eyes and gave Darien my "you see what I've had to deal with today" face. He could only chuckle in return.
"Have you ordered your …"
"Yes, I have ordered her food. And I think you're in my seat" Allan warned as he stood behind Darien. Being the calm person he was, Darien gracefully stood up.
"Darien, Allan, Allan, Darien" I said introducing them.
"Hey I thought you had work today?" I asked before they could exchange fake pleasantries.
"Actually I still am, just on my lunch break. If you'll excuse me, I'd better order before …"
"Why don't you join us Darien" Molly offered. I watched as Allan's body stiffened and his face darkened in annoyance, men and their testosterone. I mentally rolled my eyes.
"As much as I'd love to join you, I only have a 45 min break, so I'm actually taking my food to go"
"What a shame, if you'll excuse me" Allan said as he sidestepped over Darien to sit down across me. I again mentally rolled my eyes. Darien gave Melvin a 'what's his problem' face, Melvin shrugged shook Darien's hand goodbye and sat in front of Molly. Giving me one last glance, Darien walked over to the counter to order his food.
"So who was he?" Allan asked as he sipped his coke
"A friend" I replied as I looked out the window disinterested.
"I ordered you a Caesar salad, is that ok?" Allan asked. I gently nodded my head as I continued to stare out the window. I hate salad. I knew I was being rude, but I didn't want to give the guy the wrong idea. Clearly he's not getting that I'm not interested.
"Are you ok? Is that guy being here upsetting you?" Allan asked as he laid a hand on mine.
"No" I said confused.
"If you want, I'll ask him to leave?"
"Don't be ridiculous" I said taking my hand back. I suddenly remembered that I needed to talk with him.
"Sorry I forgot I needed to ask him something, if you'll excuse me" I said standing up, never meeting his gaze. Quickly scanning the café I spotted a mop of black hair near the counter.
"Hey" I whispered, tapping him on the shoulder, and on cue his head turned.
"Hey" he whispered back.
"Are you free tonight, after work?" he looked at me quizzically pausing for me to give him an explanation into why I was asking. I sighed.
"Don't worry, I wont be taking my shirt off this time" he looked frantically at the people around us hoping they didn't hear my snide comment, which I might add was not whispered.
"Was that really necessary?" he asked hushed.
"I didn't quiet like the insinuating look you gave me" I said placing my hands on my hips as my eyes narrowed at his.
"I didn't even say a word, how could I possibly insinuate anything?" his hushed voice was no longer hushed, he took a step forward, towering over me. If he thought that his height would intimidate me he got another thing coming.
"If you had just answered my simple question with a simple yes or no, there wouldn't have been a need for me to not be so indiscreet!" I said through gritted teeth as I stood on my tippy toes.
"And here I thought your amnesia had totally made you forget your childishness"
"Well excuse me, 'Mr. I think I'm always right but really I'm just one big jerk'!"
"Is there a problem here?"
"NO!" we both barked together, turning our heads to the person who interrupted us. It was Allan. He stood behind me, a scowl on his face as he stared daggers at Darien.
"Are you ok Serena?" Allan asked, concern showing in his eyes. Dropping my rather fuming face I stepped towards him.
"I'm ok, thanks Allan, I'll be with you shortly" I said giving him a reassuring smile. He returned my smile with his own. I felt bad for the guy, I've been so rude to him this whole time. I'll have to apologize for my behaviour later, and make sure he gets that I'm just not interested. He gave me a slight nod as I stepped back to face Darien.
"So are you free or not?" I asked Darien.
"Hello Darien?!" I said clicking my fingers in front of his nose trying to break his looming gaze that was directed behind me. I didn't know what happened, or how or even why. But within just two seconds Darien held my clicking hand and intertwined it with his as his other hand snaked around me and rested on my lower back. With a harsh tug he pulled my body towards him as he claimed my lips. My eyes widened. This kiss was not like the other ones we shared, it was rough but still sweet. He didn't beg for entrance he demanded it, and I surrendered it to him as my eyes fluttered to a close. Our tongues glided over each other, fighting for dominance as my free hand raked and pulled on his silky mop of black hair. His lips screamed 'you're mine, and mine alone and don't you ever forget it' and I couldn't help but whimper as he bit my lower lip. As the sound left my mouth he ended the kiss abruptly.
I stared at him with hooded eyes as I slowly removed my hands from his unruly hair, placing it on his cheek, our noses touching,
"I get off at 7, but come by at 8. I'll have dinner ready" he whispered.
"Order number 16!"
"That's me, I'll see you later?" he asked our position still intact. I could only nod in response. He gave me a chaste kiss on my lips, untangled himself from me and swiftly paid and got his food. I spun around to see him just about to walk out of the café when he suddenly stopped in his tracks and turned.
"Dinner at my place, 8 o'clock, don't be late, BABE!" I turned red, as every single customer turned his or her head towards my direction, curious to see who the yelling man was yelling at. As soon as Darien had passed through the doors, Allan had walked right pass me, not saying a word and headed straight for our table. His hands were in his pockets and unreadable expression on his face. I felt a pang of guilt and embarrassment swirl inside me knowing he was standing right behind me as Darien and I played tonsil hockey. So much for my carefree chill day I thought sighing as I made my way to our table.
I had thought our table would have a rather awkward atmosphere after what transpired between Darien and I, knowing fully that Molly had a pretty great view from her table. But surprisingly we just carried on like normal. And I knew Molly was holding in her questions for Allan's sake. When I thought everything was going really good a waitress had brought our food, my order was replaced with a burger and fries and blueberry pancakes for dessert. The waitress explained that Darien was the one who changed the order and pre-paid for it as well. I thought Allan would sulk or be peeved at what Darien had done. But he just casually joked about it by saying "he sure knows you well". He had really surprised with his positive attitude towards the whole situation, I thought he would be ignoring me, but he didn't which only made me feel even guiltier. As we finished our food we had decided to head down to the park to watch the sunset. It would only be fair I watch it set today since I did see it rise. Allan unfortunately had to leave, apparently his twin sister Ann had a fight with her boyfriend and was now stranded on some beach an hour away. But before he left he pulled me aside.
"You know I've never told you this but … I've had a crush on you for a long time" he started. I opened my mouth to talk as he placed a hand up halting me.
"I never had the guts to say it, fearing what you'd say. But when you had the accident … I …." He was a lost for words. I could tell he was really uncomfortable.
"It's ok" I said placing my hand on his shoulder.
"No, please let me finish. I regretted not even trying to ask you out. So when I saw you today I thought maybe if I hung around you, you would be able to get to know me better and maybe … even start liking me" I was speechless.
"But I was just being a coward" he continued.
"I know now I should've been more upfront with you, at least then your boyfriend wouldn't have threatened to kill me" he said jokingly as he scratched the back of his head. When did Darien do that? He didn't even speak a word to Allan. I didn't even bother correcting him about the whole Darien is my boyfriend thing. I had a feeling if I did then he would be hanging around me more than I would like. We said our goodbyes to Allan and went on our separate ways. I was dreading this moment. For I knew I was going to be bombarded with questions from Molly. Here we go, I thought mentally sighing.
A/N: I know I was supposed to put a action scene, but I got carried away with the latest scene of Darien and Serena so next chap will have the action scene. I know with the last few chaps I've been saying that I will be making my chaps longer (and I have), I've decided to go back with my 2k word chaps. I feel I would be posting up more chaps if I do revert. Anyway totally did not plan for this chap to lead this way, but I ended up liking it. Never did I thought I would be putting Allan and Ann in here, but Allan did serve a purpose and it will be revealed in Darien's POV. They probably wont be mentioned again. Quiet surprised at how many people followed and faved the story yet so little reviewed :( ok i deserved that for not posting up for so long, but your reviews really do help me write. The more I see you asking for more the more I'm compelled to actually write!
Until the next chapter alPhha
