Parker Residence...
The two heroes sat next to one another on the bed in the Guest Bedroom turned Mindy's bedroom. Sami watched the younger as she awaited Mindy's answer to how she had known that the brunette had been crime fighting in Gotham. The younger blond was at a loss for words. Well, she was bound to have to tell someone about her real reason she was even here. Mindy took a deep breath,
"Look, I'm here, not because I have no option, but by choice." she simply stated. Sami raised a brow. Another breath.
"A few nights ago, me and my godfather Marcus were visiting some old police buddies in Gotham City. On that very same night, this bad guy, "The Joker", escaped from some place called "Arkham Asylum". On the way to Bibbo's Pie Shop, the asshole clown and his gang started a fire fight with some of the officers. I was told to get away. I hid in a nearby alley,"
"Marcus had joined the fire fight and helped fend off the other gang members. I have no fucking clue what took you and the Batman so god damn long, but you two showed up after the Joker had gunned down my guardian. I saw you run off before the rest of the force showed up. After doing some research, I had managed to track you down here in Middleton. I wanted to join you because," Mindy became teary eyed as her vision blurred,
"Because you want to get revenge against the Joker." Sami finished for the sobbing child. Mindy nodded and hugged Sami, who embraced her tighter,
"If you want revenge against him, why come to me? Why not Batman himself?" the elder girl asked.
Mindy looked up into her companion's eyes, "Because one; you don't wear a mask, and two; Batman would never allow me to seek vengeance. And I want to permanently put an end to the clown."
Sami sighed. Great, now the kid wanted to kill one of the most dangerous villains in Gotham City. Something that the Teen Hero would not be able to allow. If the Batman wasn't going to end the Joker, neither would she, and she was certainly not going to allow this ten year old girl to put an end to the clown.
The Joker did deserve an abrupt end to his life, but he was surprisingly influential to Gotham City's criminal underworld. He knew some pretty violent people, one of them being Harley frigging Quinn. If Mindy were to kill off the Joker, Harley would do anything in her power to get back at the girl in the cruelest way possible.
Sami wouldn't allow that. She just couldn't. The she could do was put the Son of a Bitch back in Arkham. Or allow the purple clad girl to beat the living hell out of the clown, but Batman would intervene nonetheless. And then the brunette would have to deal with Mr. Fight for Justice. The girl loved her father, but she just wished he would go a tiny bit over the edge and put the clown in a body cast.
Rumor has it, he had done that years before he met her or Dick.
"You know I can't let you do that." the teen replied.
"Why the hell not?" Mindy asked without any emotion.
"Do you even know what would happen to you if you were to kill the Joker?" Sami asked the young girl. Mindy shrugged.
"I don't know. I really wouldn't care." she simply replied.
"You wouldn't, but other people would." the brunette said. Mindy looked up at her in disbelief.
"Oh, yeah? Like who?" the girl asked.
Sami gave her an "Are You Serious?" look, raising a brow, "Are you trying to tell me that you think no one would miss you if you got hurt or died?" Mindy nodded. The older girl shook her head and sighed for what seemed like the hundredth time that night. Alright, if that's the way the girl wanted to play,
"I've got a proposition for you," Sami began.
Mindy looked directly at the other, her dark blue eyes staring into the elder girl's lighter blues, "and what's that?"
"I'm going to give you a week. You're going out on patrol with me, hanging around with me at school, and outside of school. If you decide to go after the Joker by the end of the week, I want you to consider your decision on killing the Joker. I want you to reflect on all of the people you've had an influence on in that pass week." Sami explained.
"What are my end results?" the girl asked.
"Whether the Joker lives or dies." the older girl said solemnly.
"Deal." Mindy said without any consideration.
Sami sighed, again, "You do realize that if you end up killing the Joker, that SHIELD will not allow me to help you? You'll be on your own." she said. The blond nodded in depression.
"What else is new?"
Oscorp...
The sounds of machines and progress filled the air as business worked like clockwork inside the technological factory. From the CEO's Office, Jack Dublin sat at his father's desk. He was currently on his cell phone, speaking to his best friend since birth,
"So, she stalked you because she sought out your help?" Jack asked in confusion, trying to understand the situation.
"Yeah, but I can't allow her to kill the Joker. No matter how much he deserves it." Sami explained from the other end of the line.
"I don't think the clown is good enough for death. You said that yourself, Sam." he said.
"Not those exact words…." Sami trailed off.
"But that statement applied to all those who do wrong on to the innocent, does it not?" Jack asked.
There was a bit of silence on the other end. A deep breath could be heard along with a half-hearted, "Correct."
Jack looked down at the paper work that seemed to have scattered itself all over his father's mahogany desk. He picked up one sheet and read over it with little to none interest. Just more weapon blue prints for unnecessary weapons. He dropped the paper down on the desk and rubbed at the bridge of his nose. Why couldn't his father just invent something that wouldn't potentially eliminate the human race?
That was a question that was always left unanswered.
Just so he didn't make it sound as though he was ignoring his friend and semi-crush, he had asked his leader to repeat Mindy's Story and to not leave out any details about it so he could do research on this "McCready Family". As he logged on to the lap top, the Office door opened to reveal his father Harry Osborn. The business owner scooted Jack out of the way for a second to get something out of his desk,
"Who are you on the phone with, kiddo?" Harry asked.
The blond boy covered the mouth piece of his phone, "Just Sami."
"Ooo, you two get together, yet?" Harry asked.
Jack sputtered on his water, spitting the liquid out all over his father's paper work, "What? No! No, she's just my best friend."
"Then I guess I owe Clint and Johnny Storm twenty bucks." Harry replied casually.
Jack turned away from his lap top and looked up at his father in confusion. His father had betted on him and Sami getting together? With Hawkeye and the Human Torch? Of all the people on the hellicarrier. The teenager shook his head and went back to researching. Sami had to go and both teens said their goodbyes.
"Aw, you forgot to say I love you." Harry teased.
"Shut up, Dad!" Jack exclaimed in embarrassment, emphasizing his exclamation with a few harsh hits to the other's arm. Harry just chuckled at his son's embarrassment,
"You know I'm just teasing you."
"Sometimes I wonder." Jack said with a roll of his green-blue eyes.
Parker Residence...
Mindy stared up at the ceiling, silently praying that sleep would come to her a lot faster than it was. Sami had just left a few moments ago, their discussion leaving quite a mark on them both. Mindy didn't want to be left alone again if she killed the Joker, but the Teen Hero leader would have no choice, unless she wanted be killed.
Or was it really that? Would she and Sami really be killed if the Joker was too die at her hand? Or was it demotivation to drive Mindy away from killing the damned demented clown? So many questions with way too many answers. Her brain couldn't take it. The issue was that she would never truely know the answer unless she pursued her actions, but would she really risk it all?
End of this chapter.
