SHIELD Infirmary
The first thing that registered to Mindy was pain. Pain everywhere. Everything just hurt, and not in a dull ache kind of way. No, it was much worse than that. Like, she literally needed pain medication just to make it go away. She tried moving her left hand, but found it trapped in some kind of casing. Now genuinely curious, she cracked her eyes open.
Once her eyes adjusted to the fluorescent lights, she took in her surroundings. She was definitely in a hospital room of some sort, machinery and all. She looked down at her hand and nearly face palmed. Of course it felt encased in something, there was a cast on it.
"Duh, Mindy." She scolded herself.
As if on cue, there was a knock on her room. After she cleared her throat, Mindy gave permission for whoever was on the other side to come in. The door cracked open slightly and slowly. Sami peeked her head around the door, giving the blond a small smile. She let herself in before closing the door behind her. Mindy returned it as she sat up in her bed, being careful not to further injure herself in the process. The older girl took a seat next to the bed.
"How are feeling?" Sami asked, using one of her bandaged hands to push Mindy's hair out of her face.
"I feel..." Mindy winced as she stretched one of her hurt sides, "...I've been better." she replied.
The brunette gave a chuckle, "I see that. You sure?" Sami asked.
Mindy pouted at the brunette's remark. Though she sounded serious, Mindy could detect a playful tone in the older girl's voice. She gave the brunette a playful punch as if emphasizing the fact that she was okay. Sami gave the other a smile, rubbing at her arm in pretend pain.
The two shared a chuckle before sitting in silence. Mindy looked down at her broken arm, feeling slightly embarrassed. She had always been able to hold her own in a fight, most of the time walking away with only minor lacerations. Never had she received broken limbs before now. Her eyes trailed over to the brunette.
Sami looked exhausted, upset, and guilty all at the same time. The brunette looked down at the floor, looking just as upset as Mindy. Though the blond was not a mind-reader only had one guess as to what the other was thinking: Sami was blaming herself for what had happened to Mindy.
"It's not your fault." Mindy said.
Sami looked back over to the younger, eyes totally unreadable. The brunette did not respond, instead looking back down toward her hands. Mindy looked down at the other's hands too, just noticing that the elder had somehow sustained injuries. She never asked Sami about the injuries.
"How did that happen?" Mindy asked, motioning to the brunette's hands.
Sami gave a nervous/embarrassed chuckle, "Let's just say that you and I were not the only ones hospitalized."
Mindy's eyes went wide, "One of your teammates got hurt?"
The other shook her head, "No. No, they're all okay."
"Then...who?" Mindy asked.
The door then opened, as Batman made his way inside. He looked toward Sami, reminding the brunette that she should be resting in her own room. The brunette laughed, reassuring the Dark Knight that she would be just fine. Though the motion was unseen, Mindy could tell that the Dark Knight had rolled his eyes at the brunette's response.
He then turned his attention to Mindy, "How are you feeling?"
Mindy nodded, telling him that she would be okay. He nodded before turning back to Sami. He then pulled the brunette aside, drawing the room divider between them and Mindy. The blond became uneasy, wondering what was was going on. She sat up slightly as she tried to listen in.
"I know you were upset and couldn't control yourself, but you could've killed him." Batman said.
Sami released a sigh, "He was going to kill her. I simply stopped him."
"Two broken legs, a broken arm, a fractured wrist, seven broken ribs, a busted nose and a serious concussion. Not to mention lacerations all over his body. You call that stopping him?" Batman asked, trying not to lose his composure.
"He's lucky I let him live." Sami replied. Mindy could hear Sami practically growl at the other.
"Only because your father and Captain America were able to pry you off of the Joker." Batman said.
Mindy's eyes widened in shock. Sami almost killed the Joker? Because of her? Now the blond had officially heard everything. Wait, was that who else had been hospitalized besides herself and Sami?
A day or two later, Sami had been released from the Infirmary. When she had come to tell Mindy, the blond was gone. The brunette had practically torn the Helicarrier apart looking for the younger. When she had asked around, no one seemed to know where the girl had gone. They did know that someone had stolen one of the jets. SHIELD had let out an alert to be on the look out for either their jet or the girl.
Once she had found that out, Sami was livid. Mindy had just up and left without so much as a goodbye. It had broken the brunette's heart. The young girl had grown on her since her arrival and it had hurt her that the younger had just decided to leave.
Currently, Sami sat in the driver's seat of her car and was on her way home. She couldn't stop thinking about the whole thing. For some reason, part of her hoped Mindy was okay while the other part of her was angry at the young girl for making her worry.
She made her way to the front door and went to unlock it, but found it slightly ajar. She instantly forgot all about her worries as a new set of problems arose. Like who the hell had broken into her house? She did a count of who could be home in her head.
Her father was at work, her mother said that she had gone grocery shopping, Ben and Dick were at the manor playing video games, and Esther had gone to the library, so that just left the pets.
She pulled out her gun as she slowly pushed the door open. The door looked intact, meaning there had been no signs of forced entry. The living room looked intact as well, making her think that this wasn't a robbery, but more of an unwelcome visitor. The brunette secretly hoped that Deadpool didn't decide to make one of his unfriendly visits today. She wasn't exactly in the mood to deal with the Merc.
She looked into the Dining Room, noticing that it looked clean and untouched. That was a good sign, considering Wade liked to stab his swords through the table and leave them there while he made himself food in the kitchen. Speaking of which, there was sound coming from the kitchen.
Cautiously, Sami analyzed the kitchen island. There had been a couple of crumbs, possibly from chips or an Italian roll. There was also a smudge of mayo on the marbled top.
"What took you?" a familiar voice asked.
Sami turned around, eyes wide in disbelief.
Hit Girl sat on the kitchen counter, munching away on a turkey and cheese sandwich and chips. She chuckled at the brunette's speechless expression. It was almost amusing at how shocked the older was, looking about ready to faint.
The brunette dropped her gun on the floor before running over to hug the young superhero. Mindy laughed, returning the gesture. Sami pulled the younger in close, holding her to her chest tightly. Tears fell from her blue eyes. She pulled back, staring at the younger.
"You came back." Sami said, wiping away her tears. Was this real?
Mindy nodded, wrapping her arms around the older girl's neck once more. She heard Sami tell her not to scare her like that. Mindy nodded, apologizing repeatedly. They pulled away again, Mindy now tearing up and sniffling slightly.
"Why did you leave?" Sami asked.
"I-I was originally going to go back to one of my safe-houses and dump the jet, but for some reason, it just didn't seem right. I-You were right. I couldn't just leave. I missed you, Ben, Jack, Brandi, your team...I just couldn't leave." Mindy admitted.
Sami sniffled, "So, does that mean you're staying?" She asked, already knowing the answer.
Mindy nodded, a smile on her little face.
"Parker, we have a robbery in progress at the Middleton Jewelry Store. Witnesses believe their are five guys accompanied by one Harley Quinn. You sure you and your team can handle this?" Natasha Romanoff asked jokingly.
Sami turned to her team, which consisted of Jack, Ben, Mindy, and Dick. They stood in a row in front of one of the large computer monitors in Sami's lab. She gave them a smile, before turning back to glance at Nat.
"I don't know...seems like a challenge. What do you guys think?" Sami asked playfully.
Mindy returned the brunette's smile, "We got this."
"Alright, you fellas heard the young lady. Suit up and head out." Sami called out.
Sami then received a call from Gohan, asking if she could swing by his lab after their mission. Sami looked toward them, but only Mindy looked interested. Sami told him that she and Mindy would be over after they were done, and that he had better actually be home this time.
Mindy laughed, as she heard Gohan scolding his sister for doubting him. The brunette hung up, heading down to the garage. Mindy told Sami that she would drive. The Teen Hero told her that was not happening. The young hero let out a mock sound of disappointment before heading out with the others.
On their way out, Hit Girl mentally told herself that she could get used to this.
End of story. Thanks for reading and I hope you all enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing this :)
