Chapter 19
I jumped as the computer announced ominously, Earth Death in 10 minutes. We're nearing the end. We ran out of the room as the message repeated. Toxic by Brittany Spears drifts through the hallway as we are slowed by a congregation of little blue assistants outside of the Steward's office. Smoke is pouring out of the room in billows and everyone is coughing madly.
The Doctor waves his hands in an attempt to dispose of the smoke. "Hold on, get back!" He wheezes, pushing through the mob. The Doctor sonics the computer panel next to the room. A faint voice inside of the room says, Sun filter rising. Sun filter rising. Everyone sighs with relief. "Is the Steward in there?" Jabe manages to choke out.
I whisper softly, afraid saying it would make it official, "He was in there." Jabe seems to understand my grave tone. "Burnt to a crisp," the Doctor comments, shielding his eyes to try and peer inside. He looks back at the screen, but I'm already running. I remembered the other sun filter, the one where Rose is, should be descending this very moment. I sprint faster.
000000
(Rose P.O.V)
The colors all swirl together like a Van Gogh painting as Rose slowly is brought back into consciousness. She rubs the nasty bump on her head, groaning as she sits up. She notices that she is back in the room they first arrived in.
She squints as a stray beam of light burns her eyes, only to realize that the light was from the burning sun. Sun filter descending droned the computer. Rose crouched down, trying to stay away from the increasing glare. She banged against the metal door with all of her might until her hands were cherry red. "LET ME OUT!" she screamed in desperation. "LET. ME. OUT!" Tears prickled in the corners of her eyes. She had lost all hope when she heard a familiar buzzing noise. "Doctor! Alice!" she shouted, hoping they could hear her. When they didn't respond, she leaned her head against the hot metal.
"Doctor, hurry!" Alice was pleading. "Why?" the Doctor scoffed. "Is there someone important in there?" "Doctor!" she shouted again. She could hear him sigh and mutter, "Oh, well, it would be you." She could hear the smack Alice gave him reverberating off of the walls. "DOCTOR GET HER OUT!" Alice said forcefully. Rose was grateful for the harshness, considering that the heat had started to burn the top of the door. "Hold on two ticks, Rose!" the Doctor reassured her. No later than 5 seconds later, she heard the AI state, Sun filter rising. Sun filter rising. She sighed in relief, but the danger wasn't over yet.
Rose crouched lower on the door, trying desperately to avoid the scorching beam of light that had fried the top quarter of the room. Thinking the danger is over, she moves to stand up, only to hear the ominous computer repeating, Sun filter descending. Sun filter descending. She can hear Alice scream with frustration through the doorway. The Doctor absently comments, "The computer's getting clever."
"Stop mucking about!" she screams angrily.
"It's fighting back!" Alice explains, her voice muffled. Rose sank to the floor in desperation. "Just please open the door!"
"We're trying!" came the reply. Rose quickly jumps up and rushes down the stairs, searching for another way out. Not finding one, she rushes back to the door and tugs on it again, the sunlight crawling it's way down the blackened door. "The lock's melted!"
She hears the computer say nonchalantly, Sun filter rising. She sighs, only to hear it repeat back to her, Sun filter descending. She groans. It is more of an annoying alarm then an omen now. "The whole thing's jammed!" the Doctor calls. "I can't open the doors, stay here!"
"Where am I gonna go? Ipswich?" she nags as he converses with Alice and soon all she can here is the computer's droning and two pairs of footsteps getting further away.
Now all she can do is wait.
Alone.
