Mistaken for a Couple

It wasn't the first time that shook Emma and Regina, or the second, not even the third, but the fourth time was the last straw.

"Maybe it's the way you keep giving me those damn puppy dog eyes." Regina snapped from across the table.

"I do not give you puppy dog eyes."

"Or maybe it's because you always hold the door for me even when I'm nowhere near it yet," Regina went on before Emma could say any more.

"Fine," Emma spat through cringed teeth, "next time, I'll wait until your close, and then I'll have the door slam you in the face."

"I'm sorry ladies," the waitress came up grinning at their lovers spat. "Can I take your order?"

Emma huffed before adjusting herself, not wanting to be rude to the waitress. "Yes, I'll have the double bacon cheeseburger with extra cheese and a side of chili cheese fires and she'll have the bland Kale salad with no croutons and the dressing on the side.

"Aw, that's sweet," the waitress responded as she walked away.

"You can't be serious?" Regina glared at her unable to blink.

"What?" Emma asked, not getting why Regina was getting even more irritated. "Oh come on. I order for you at Granny's all the time."

Regina glanced around the unfamiliar diner, then blankly back at Emma.

"Great, so this is my fault."

"At least the guilty party has been named," Regina responded in a victorious tone.

Emma rolled her eyes ignoring the topic and glanced down at the map to figure out their best route to the city from where they were.

Once their food arrived, Emma and Regina completely forgot about their little mistaken for a couple fiasco… for the fourth time that weekend. They eased back into their typical conversation and afterwards video phoned Henry. Emma scooted in close to Regina so they could both talk to him, their faces brighter than the heavens as they spoke to their son. Right before the call ended, Henry said I love you moms just as the waitress walked by, but they were both too involved with their son to notice her growing grin.

After hanging up with Henry, Emma asked for the check, insisting on paying this time. Regina simply smiled not arguing as Emma assumed she would. As soon as the check arrived though, Regina swiped it from the waitress's hand before the recipe book could reach the table.

"Regina," Emma tried to intercept, getting her hand slapped in the process.

"I told you, I'll be paying for the meals."

"And the hotel room?" Emma added a little too loudly.

Regina shook her head at the curious eyes slyly shifting their way. "Great, now everyone will think we're having some extravagant love affair instead of just being an ordinary couple."

"Sorry," Emma said inching forward not wanting to add to the prying ears. "It's just, you're paying for everything."

"Not the gas, you know I don't support that chunk of metal you call a car," Regina winked.

Emma smiled knowing it was no use in arguing with Regina as she rose from the table and tossed the money down. Emma threw on her jacket and scarf not caring how it fell on her while Regina took care in preparing herself, even stretching out each individual finger of her gloves. As Regina reached down to fetch her purse, she gave Emma a once over and shook her head.

"Honestly dear," she said taking a step toward Emma to adjust her scarf hanging unevenly. "I can't take you anywhere."

The waitress walked by to take the next tables order, awing once more as Regina patted Emma's chest in approval. "Looks like I'm not the only one giving people the wrong impression." Emma said grinning, then leaned in and placed a quick peck to Regina's cheek. "Thanks sweet heart," she added hurrying away. She would pay for that later, but it was worth the frozen look left on Regina's face. The truth was out. They were both at fault and Emma would never let her live it down.
