February 2nd, 1991
Dear Daddy,
It's Groundhog Day! You know what that means! That means that the groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil (Mrs. Jones says that's his actual name), predicts whether there will be six more weeks of winter or if we'll have an early spring. If he sees his shadow, there'll be six more weeks of winter weather. If he doesn't, spring will come early!
Maddie came over for a sleepover, and she said that Punxsutawney Phil is going to see his shadow today. I don't think he is. I think we're going to have an early spring. Mommy says it's been pretty warm for it being only February.
At school yesterday, they sent home an announcement about a talent show! It's in two weeks! And Mommy said I can enter it! When I asked her what I should do, she said I could do something alone like play the piano or do something with my friends like a dance or a funny play. I asked Maddie if she wanted to do something with me, she said she wasn't going to do anything for the talent show. She said she got way too scared to perform in front of other people. I told her it was just like ballet recitals, but she just shook her head. I think I'm going to play piano, like Mommy suggested. There's this one piece that I'm working on, called "The Princess Dance", and it's really pretty. Ms. Bonnie says I'm doing a really good job on it, and that I should think about doing that one for the next recital. I think she's going to be really happy that I want to do it for the school talent show. I am kinda nervous though. I'm going to be playing the piano in front of the entire school! Mommy said not to worry, that I would do just fine. I hope so.
Yay! I just heard on TV that Punxsutawney Phil did NOT see his shadow! That means that we're going to have an early spring! I'm so excited for spring! It's going to be a lot of fun! In the spring in Mrs. Jones's class, we get to watch tadpoles and caterpillars change into cute frogs and pretty butterflies!
I miss you a lot, Daddy! I hope you'll be home by spring, so I can tell you all about the frogs and butterflies in person! I love you!
Love,
Kelly
