Chapter Fourteen

Rachel's POV

The rest of the day followed exactly as it had done this morning. Crowley made a dozen or so crossroad deals and by the end of it my feet were starting to hurt.

"Are we nearly done yet?" I asked, following him through a neighbourhood to supposedly where the crossroads would be.

I heard Crowley sigh, "One more visit and then we may go back. This one is important since it's not a deal."

I nodded and followed him to a one of the many rich looking houses that lined the street. The house that Crowley stopped at was a very modern looking house with a white wash on the walls. It was a two-story house and it looked to be a spacious one.

"So, who are we going to see then?" I asked when we were at the front door.

"Just an old client. For your own good more than anything please re-frain from talking for this meeting." Crowley instructed me just as he rung the bell.

I raised my eyebrow, "Why are you being all polite all of a sudden?"

"Haven't I been polite to you? Anyway, I can be polite to anyone I want to be polite to. Now, shhh, I can hear her coming." Crowley ordered, standing up straighter.

"Her?" I questioned, but shut up immediately when the door opened.

The woman in question looked to be in her late 20's with long chestnut brown hair and an oval face with olive skin. She had brown eyes and she was unnaturally slim; no wonder why Crowley had been interested in her. I couldn't help but be a little jealous of her figure.

"Crowley." The woman sighed, looking slightly disappointed. "It's time, isn't it?"

"Now, Josephine, dear. That's not polite to greet an old friend, is it?" Crowley asked, while stepping into her house as if it belonged to him.

"Well, since it's not a celebratory event then I can act however I want to, Crowley. Do let your lady friend come in." She gestured to me.

Crowley nodded at me and I quickly hurried inside. I looked around the hallway just as the Josephine shut the door and saw that it was a nicely furnished piece of space. The walls were wallpapered with a blue stripped pattern running down them while the walls were covered with wooden flooring. She had one or two tables dotted about the hall with various things pilled on them but I didn't get to look closer since we were already making our way to the living room.

"What's your name?" Josephine suddenly asked me, nodding her head towards me.

I looked towards Crowley to see if he approved and saw him give a little nod, "Rachel, Miss. Rachel Colley."

"No need for formalities. Just because you're with the King it doesn't mean you can't just call me Josie." Josie said, smiling kindly at me.

"Now, Josie. You can't be getting all fond of her. You know that you don't have a long lifespan ahead of you." Crowley told Josie, while sitting down in one of the comfy looking chairs.

"You haven't got a long lifespan? Are you dying?" I asked, looking curiously at her.

I heard Crowley give a low chuckle but Josie answered without registering anything that Crowley had done, "No, dear. It's nothing like that. I've chosen this; my death-wish as it were. Didn't Crowley tell you what this event was?"

I shook my head, "No, not a thing."

Josie looked sharply towards Crowley, "You do know what I've told you in the past, haven't I? Humans don't cope well with this type of thing. You demons always seem to forget that."

"Well, that's because we're demons, love. Don't tell me you forgot that tiny detail while we were together all that time." Crowley smirked at her.

"Wait! You two were together? Like, as in, together together?" I asked, looking open-mouthed at the two of them.

"How much together can you be? But, yes, we were in a relationship for 5 years." Crowley explained to me, looking a little uncomfortable in being put under the spotlight.

"And now she's dying and you don't care about it? I knew you were a demon but I didn't realise you were this much of a monster." I spat at Crowley.

"I let myself get in too deep with her. I was the one to seal the deal and then things just went from there. After a long 5 years I decided that it would be best for both of us not to communicate for the other 5 years. It would be less painful that way." Crowley explained to me, looking at me intently.

Things were starting to click together in my brain about what was happening. I remembered what had been said when Crowley had taken me to the crossroad deals and what he had been saying just a few minutes ago.

"You sealed the deal, right?" I asked him, looking at him for confirmation.

Josie sighed, "I didn't want you finding out like this, hun. To be honest, if I had it my way, you wouldn't be here to witness it at all."

Crowley glanced at her with a warning look and then nodded in my direction.

"So, you're here to collect as well, right? But I thought you didn't do the collecting? You're minions do the collecting for you." I said, trying to take everything in.

"She sure knows a lot, Crowls. Where did you find her, again?" Josie asked, looking at me curiously.

"I didn't find her anywhere. She literally dropped from the sky, well, more like appeared out of thin air but still you get the idea." Crowley answered before turning to me, "How did you know all of that? I never told you a thing."

"Erm, lucky guess?" I said, trying to cover up the truth.

Crowley raised an eyebrow, "I'll be chatting with you later."

However, before he could get another word in there was a low growl. I look widely about and then, remembering it was the Hell-hounds making the noise, tried to sense where the growling was coming from. Just as I made out that it was coming from the far corner of the room Josie stood up and straightened her clothing.

"Darling, there's no need for that. They'll be ripped to shreds in a matter of seconds." Crowley told her, in what he probably thought was a soothing voice.

Josie sniffed, "At least I want to have my dignity when I die."

I raised my eyebrow, "You're pretty tough, lady. I like you. Give them hell from me downstairs, won't you?"

Crowley coughed in annoyance but was ignored by Josie, "It would be my pleasure."

I watched as she calmly walked nearer to where the growling was coming from. When she was a few yards away, however, she stopped.

"Come and get me, bitch." She growled, sneering at the invisible dog that was right in front of her.

What happened next was the most horrifying thing for anyone to witness. Blood suddenly started to spray everywhere from Josie's neck as the dog ripped her throat open. I felt my throat constrict as I saw the dog rip every inch of Josie's skin. Just as I felt like I was going to pass out a hand grabbed my shoulder and forced me to turn round.

"Let's get out of here. There's nothing more we can do." Crowley ordered, guiding me through the house and back out of the entrance.

When we were finally back outside I took big breaths of air to keep me from fainting. I could see Crowley pacing the yard looking, what seemed like, angry with himself. As I could sense myself pulling round I straightened up and faced him with all the anger I could muster.

"You left that girl there to die and did nothing? You two were close." I yelled, looking at him in disbelief.

"I told you, too close. Anyway, she was a business deal. That was the end of it." Crowley told me, firmly.

"Oh, so when anybody gets too close you're just going to kill them, right? Is that what's going to happen to me?" I asked him, glaring him down.

"What gave you the idea that we'd get too close?" Crowley looked at me curiously.

I shrugged, "Well, I don't have anywhere to go to apart from your place and I don't know how long I'd be living with you-"

"So, you assumed that I'd get close and fond of you?" Crowley asked me, raising an eyebrow.

"I don't know. Yeah, possibly, especially after I witnessed what happened with you and that girl. Anything's possible, right?" I said, sighing with frustration.

Crowley shrugged, "You could see it that way. C'mon, let's take you home."

"What about Josie's body? We're not just going to leave it there, are we?" I asked, looking back at the house.

"There's nothing we can do. Besides, it's best if we do leave it; the cops can easily find it in the morning." Crowley said, saying it like he said this kind of thing everyday; which was probably what he did.

"I still hate what you did to her, you know that, don't you? I'm not letting this go." I threatened him, while taking his arm.

"I promise you that you can threaten me and question me all you want when we get back."

Before we vanished, however, I took a quick glance over my shoulder to see if I could see any sign of Josie. The fact that a young life had been taken tonight had shook me more than I let on. With a sigh I gripped tightly onto Crowley's arm and heard the familiar rushing sound and then was surrounded by darkness.
