Chapter 32
Siobhan's POV
I had no idea what time it was but it had been a few hours since Sam had left and we had all got ready to go to bed. I glanced over at Marthe and Dean and smiled at what I saw; Dean was laying on his bed completely knocked out while Marthe was laying across him with her head on his chest. I could also see that Dean had an arm around Marthe's waist which made me chuckle. If they ever found out about this they would kill me for seeing it. Just as I was beginning to think about trying to get some sleep the doorknob turned and Sam came into the room. He glanced around and then his gaze fell on me and I saw that he had just realised that I was awake.
"Why are you awake at this hour?" Sam whispered to me, he must have seen that Marthe and Dean were asleep.
"I couldn't fall asleep." I answered back, with a shrug.
"Because you were worrying about little old me?" Sam smirked slightly.
I rolled my eyes, "You think everything is about you, don't you?"
"No, you're getting me mixed up with Dean. And talking of Dean, he'll be freaking out in the morning." Sam nodded towards where Dean was cuddling with Marthe.
I chuckled before I continued, "So, are you going to tell me where you've been?"
"You're starting to worry about me again, Siobhan. It's cute but now it's becoming a little obsessive." Sam said, teasing me.
"Look, Sam. I know where you've been because of future knowledge but I thought I could ask you and find out the truthful way instead of having to interrogate you about it."
"So, why are you asking me if you already know? You should just keep your knowledge to yourself." Sam countered back at me.
"Sam, you know Ruby isn't all good. You must know that. She's a demon; she's not the sort of person to be mixed up with." I warned him.
"Just because you've seen her on a TV show doesn't mean that you know who she is." Sam argued.
His words hurt me a little since it felt like he was attacking me about himself more than Ruby. I shook off the thoughts and got back to the conversation at hand,
"So, if you want me to know more about Ruby then I should come with you to see her, right?"
Sam looked at me sharply, "No. Look, I know his is going to sound hypocritical but I don't want you mixing with her. As you said, she's a demon."
"You're correct, that's rather hypocritical of you. And I guess you know my answer now but I'll give it you anyway. I'm coming with you to meet Ruby. I'm pretty sure I'll be meeting her soon anyways." I told him, getting up from the bed quietly.
Sam sighed, "There's no telling you not to is there? Fine, you can come along. I was going to see Ruby again anyway. I just needed to check that you lot were ok."
"We were worried about you all night. Dean was distressed." I glared at him, pulling on my hoodie and some shoes before walking to him.
He looked guilty as he looked at Dean, "I didn't mean to cause him distress, you must know that. I'm just trying to help."
"I know that, Sammy, but you're doing it the wrong way. C'mon, let's get going." I said, tugging at Sam's arm.
Sam backed down from arguing and I was surprised when he didn't comment on my use of his name which made me smile slightly. We headed out of the door and got into a car which I imagined Sam had stolen from somewhere so that Dean wouldn't catch on to what he was doing since the Impala would still be there after we left the motel.
When we arrived to the place where Ruby apparently was Sam parked the car outside the warehouse and turned to me,
"Are you sure that you want to go through with this? Just tell me now if you're going to change you're mind."
I shook my head, "No, I'm going to meet her. Even if I don't want to."
"Ok then, c'mon. The entrance is this way." Sam told me, and got out of the car to lead the way to the entrance.
I got out and headed towards where Sam was going. Nerves were flying around my stomach as I neared the entrance; I didn't know what was going to happen with Ruby, and, to be honest, I didn't want to think about it. I took a deep breath and stepped through the entrance and into the room. I could see Ruby was near Sam and they were discussing something and they hadn't taken notice of my presence,
"She's just here to know you, Ruby. She's interested about you, that's all."
"I thought we had something special going on, Sam. Don't tell me you've got another girl on the side." Ruby said, pouting at Sam which made me want to gag but I made myself not to so that they wouldn't know I was here.
Sam sighed, "C'mon, Ruby. Leave off this now. We've had our fun. Let's get the demon down here."
"Wait. What demon?" I asked, confused at what part I was on in the storyline.
At the sound of my voice both Sam and Ruby turned around to face me. I could see that Ruby wasn't happy about seeing me and I knew I returned the same feelings towards her. I knew what her motives were but I had to keep my mouth shut for Sam's sake.
"Some human has been used for a vessel for a demon. We intend to rescue him by extracting that demon." Sam explained to me.
I tried to pull the innocent card, "Oh, and how might you be doing that?"
"Siobhan, you know the conversation that we had. Don't think that you can fool me into thinking that you don't know about anything that will be happening."
I nodded and ceased asking. I saw out of the corner of my eye that Ruby was looking at us both with a quizzical expression but had obviously decided that it was best not to pursue any questions that she had for us right now. She went into a room that geared to the left of the main room that we were in.
I looked towards Sam before saying, "I want to know if this is all you and not Ruby plaguing you with her ideas. If this is all you then I'll back down and let this run it's course. If not, then I'll have to intervene whenever I feel it's the most appropriate to intervene."
"It's all me. I want to help people. That's what Dean and I do for a living but we seem to kill more people than we can save. This maybe a gift to help both Dean and I to save more people." Sam said, looking at me intently.
"Sam..." I sighed, but stopped short since Ruby was coming back into the room with the demon in toe.
Sam went to get a spare chair from the corner in the room and put it in the middle of the room and then Ruby shoved the demon in the chair and pulled the bag that had been over his head off. The demon had possessed a man that looked to be in his late twenties or early thirties with dark messy hair and some stubble around his chin. He looked towards me for a second with curiousity before he focused his attention on Sam. Sam took that as his queue to start questioning him,
"Where's Lilith?"
"Kiss my ass." The demon's eyes turned black as he stared at Sam.
Sam didn't look fazed by this and instead he smiled, "I'd watch myself if I were you."
"Why? Huh? Because you're Sam Winchester, Mr. Big Hero? And yet here you are slutting around with some demon and that bitch." he nodded his head towards Ruby and I when he mentioned us, "Real hero."
"Shut your mouth." Sam growled out, clenching his hands into fists.
The demon seemed oblivious or too arrogant and carried on, "Now I don't know where you picked one up here but tell me about those months without your brother. About all the things you and this demon bitch do in the dark."
Both Ruby and I looked at Sam to see what his reaction would be. He was starting to tremble all over with anger.
"Huh? Tell me, hero." The demon prompted which made made me glare at him for doing so.
Just as Sam lost his control completely he raised his arm and clenched his hand and concentrated on the demon. What I saw next was comepletely bizzare and I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it before. The demon's smoke started to issue out of him and it continued like that for several seconds. I saw that, while this happenbed, Ruby gave Sam a slight smile which he returned and this made me feel a pang of jealousy towards them. Sam kept concentrating on smoking the demon out before, eventually, the demon left the vessel and the man was unconscious.
When it was safe to go near the man Sam went off and put two fingers onto the side of his neck to feel for a pulse. He looked up to Ruby and smiled.
"How'd it feel?" Ruby asked him.
"Good. No more headaches." Sam said, and he began to untie the man.
I saw my chance of going over to talk to Sam so I went over to help him. When I got over to him Sam smiled at me while I fumbled around with the knots.
"None? That's good." Ruby commented, obviously trying to keep me out of the conversation.
However, the conversation was cut short by the groans of the man waking up.
"Hey, hey. I got you. It's all right." Sam told him, while he lifted him to his feet and let him lean on him while he walked towards the door.
I got the man's other side and we both started to head towards the door. When we are in front of it the door opens to reveal both Dean and Marthe standing outside. Sam and I stop in our tracks when we see their expressions. They're both livid with anger.
"So... Anything you want to tell me, Sam?" Dean questioned him, looking around at the surroundings and also flashed me an annoyed look.
I saw that Sam was trying to pull the innocent face before he said,
"Dean, hold on, okay? Just let me -"
Dean interrupted him, "You gonna say, "let me explain"? You're gonna explain this? How about this? Why don't you start with who she is, and what the hell is she doing here?"
Ruby smiled as she said, "It's good to see you again, Dean."
Marthe and I exchanged wary glances since we both didn't trust Ruby at all but we kept our mouths shut and let Dean speak,
"Ruby?" Dean asked, and looked at Sam for confirmation.
"Is that Ruby?" Dean asked Sam.
No one said anything for a few minutes while Dean looked at Sam. I saw that Ruby's smile was fading and I knew that trouble was rising. In a flash Dean launched himself onto Ruby and shoved her to the wall. He was just about to attack her with his knife when Sam put down the man he had been holding and went over to Dean and grabbed his hands.
"Don't." Sam told him, trying to strain Dean.
Then there was a sudden fight and it ended up with Dean pinning Ruby to the wall.
"Ruby! Stop it!" Sam beseeched her, trying to get Dean off her.
Ruby glared at Dean while she kept him in a chockhold with one of her arms. She finally lets go at Sam's request and Dean rised up to his full height to try and intimidate her. Dean looked over at Sam before he commented to Ruby,
"Well, aren't you an obedient little bitch?"
Ruby glared at Dean but restrained herself.
"Ruby." Sam said again.
Ruby glared at Dean again but then looked back at Sam.
"Ruby, he's hurt." Sam told her, and nodded towards the man that they had saved a few minutes ago.
"Go." Sam told her, more firmly.
Ruby gave one more glance towards Dean and thought better of it and made her way towards the man. She picked him up and made her way out of the room but Dean asked her before she went out of the room,
"Where the hell do you think you're going?"
"The ER... unless you want to go another round first." Ruby challenged Dean, glaring at him.
When Ruby walked out of the room Dean turned round to look at Sam.
"Dean." Sam said, cautiously.
We all watched as Dean walked away to the door where he and Marthe had entered. Marthe looked at Sam a little before following Dean out of the room.
"Dean!" Sam repeated.
"Marthe!" I called, but there was no reply.
"Come on, let's get back to the hotel." I mumbled, tugging at Sam's sleeve.
Sam shrugged me off and went to where Ruby had taken the man too. After a few minutes he re-appeared and walked over to me.
"Ruby's taken care of the guy. Let's go and see if Dean's back at the hotel yet." Sam said, walking towards the exit of the building.
For the rest of the journey Sam and I spoke very little. It only took us a few minutes before we were pulling up to the driveway of the hotel we were staying at. We couldn't see the Impala anywhere which made me a little worried for Marthe; Dean could always defend himself.
As if Sam knew what I was thinking he said, "I'm sure Marthe will be safe with Dean. She's probably calming him down right now for us."
I nodded and followed Sam into the hotel room. I didn't think of going to sleep since all I wanted to know was if Marthe was alright. After a few minutes of waiting Dean banged the door open with Marthe in toe. She glanced at me with a look of guilt; it was as if she had tried to control Dean's temper but failed. I didn't blame her for anything; Dean could be pretty terrifying.
"Dean, what are you doing?" Sam asked from the table, a book in his hands.
Marthe walked into the room and sat by me on the bed while Dean ignored his brother and kept packing.
"What, are you, are you leaving?" Sam stuttered, looking at the bag on the bed.
"You don't need me. You, Ruby and Siobhan go fight demons." Dean answered him, not turning around to answer him.
Just as Dean grabbed his bag to go out of the door Sam raced towards the doorway and blocked his way,
"Hold on. Dean, come on, man."
Dean looked at Sam for a little while before he clenched his fist and, with a swift movement, hit Sam in the face hard. At the contact, Sam whirled around because of the force and then staggered a little before he found solid ground again,
"You satisfied?"
For his answer, Sam received another punch from Dean.
"I guess not." Sam answered his own question, which made me want to chuckle but because of the seriousness of the situation I did not.
"Do you even know how far off the reservation you've gone? How far from normal? From human?" Dean asked Sam, glaring at him.
"I'm just exorcising demons." Sam stated, raising an eyebrow at Dean.
"With your mind!" Dean yelled but then asked more calmly, "What else can you do?"
"I can send them back to hell. It only works with demons, and that's it." Sam explained.
Dean grabbed Sam's hands and pushed him forcefully before saying,
"What else can you do?"
"I told you!" Sam said with exasperation.
Sam pushed his hands away and they stopped their little fight.
"And I have every reason in the world to believe that." Dean said, sarcastically.
Dean walked away from Sam but before he went any further Sam said,
"Look, I should have said something."
Dean stopped but didn't turn around to face Sam. Sam took this opportunity and said,
"I'm sorry, Dean, I am. But try to see the other side here."
Dean turned around and faced him before saying,
"The other side?"
"I'm pulling demons out of innocent people." Sam said, looking at Dean pleadingly.
"Use the knife!" Dean exclaimed.
Sam sighed, "The knife kills the victim! What I do, most of them survive! Look, I've saved more people in the last five months than we save in a year."
"That what Ruby want you to think? Huh? Kind of like the way she tricked you into using your powers?" Dean asked and then shook his head, "Slippery slope, brother. Just wait and see. Because it's gonna get darker and darker, and God knows where it ends."
"I'm not gonna let it go too far." Sam insisted.
Dean smiled but then his smile faded. Marthe looked worried but before we could do anything Dean went across the room and hit the lamp hard. Dean turned back to Sam with an angry expression written all over his face,
"It's already gone too far, Sam. If I didn't know you... I would wanna hunt you."
Sam's eyes were tearing up and I placed my hand over his wrist to comfort him in some way. Marthe was looking slightly distressed over at Dean but she sat where she was since if she risked going over to Dean it could end up way worse than the situation actually was.
"And so would other hunters." Dean stated.
Sam looked up quickly, "You were gone. I was here. I had to keep fighting without you. And what I'm doing... it works."
"Well, tell me. If it's so terrific... then why'd you lie about it to me?" Dean asked, raising an eyebrow.
Sam looked down and didn't answer.
Dean pressed on, "Why did an angel tell me to stop you?"
Sam looked up with a surprised expression, "What?"
"Cas said that if I don't stop you, he will. See what that means, Sam? That means that God doesn't want you doing this. So, are you just gonna stand here and tell me everything is all good?" Dean carried on questioning him.
By now both Sam and Dean had tearful eyes and Sam looked down. The mood was broken when Sam's phone rung and Dean flinched at the loud noise. Neither of us, apart from Sam, walked towards the phone while we waited for him to answer it,
"Hello?" Sam asked, and pinched the bridge of his nose. I guessed that he was doing this to collect himself before he talked with the person on the other end of the phone.
"Hey, Travis. Yeah, hey... Uh... It's good to hear your voice too, yeah. Um, look, it's not a really good time right now. It's -" Sam said but was cut off. After a few more minutes he continued on, "Yeah, okay. Uh, well, just give me the details and uh..."
Sam trailed off while looking for a pen and paper. I saw some out of the corner of my eye in the little kitchenette area that we had and ran off to grab them. When I came back with the supplies I put them on the table for Sam and he gave me a grateful smile.
"Carthage, Missouri." Sam confirmed, writing down the information. "Looking for Jack Montgomery."
When Sam ended the phone call he looked towards Dean. Dean gave a slight nod of his head which indicated that he would be going. Marthe and I looked at each other with wary glances but then proceeded to follow the boys as they headed towards the Impala.
