Chapter 33

Marthe's POV

During the whole ride I stayed silent and didn't look over to Siobhan. I was so mad at her for going with Sam and meeting Ruby. I didn't know what Ruby had told her and I hoped to God, ironically that was, that she hadn't been persuaded by Ruby to think what Sam was doing with his powers was 'good'. While there was silence in the backseat the brothers, however, were talking about the trip Dean and I had taken and how we had met the brothers' parents.

"I can't believe it. Mom, a hunter?" Sam asked.

Dean nodded, "I wouldn't have believed it either if Marthe and I hadn't seen it ourselves. That woman could kick some ass. I mean, she almost took me down."

"How'd she look? I mean... was she happy?" Sam asked, with a hopeful voice.

"Yeah, she was awesome. Funny and smart. So hopeful." From where I was sitting in the backseat, I could see a hint of a smile on Dean's face.

Dean looked over to Sam before he said, "Dad, too. Until of course..."

Sam sighed a little which made Dean look over to him and ask, "What?"

"Nothing." Sam dismissed him.

I looked over to Siobhan to see that she was looking out of the car window and clearly avoiding my gaze. I furrowed my eyebrows with worry; I cared about her even though we'd only known each other for weeks now. I sighed before Sam continued his conversation with Dean,

"It's just, our parents. And now we find out our grandparents too? Our whole family murdered and for what? So Yellow Eyes could get in my nursery and bleed in my mouth?"

Dean seemed confused for a second before saying, "Huh?"

"Sam, I never said anything about blood." Dean said, looking over at his brother.

I looked in the rear view mirror and saw that Sam had a guilty expression on his face as Dean asked him, "You knew about that?"

Sam's head was still looking out of the window as he said, "Yeah, for about a year."

Dean's head turned back onto the road before asking, "A whole year?"

"I should have told you. I'm sorry." Sam apologised.

Dean sighed, "You've been saying that a lot lately, Sam. But whatever. You don't want to tell me, you don't have to. It's fine."

"Dean." Sam said.

Siobhan and I shared a worried look before we turned back to the boys to see if this would end calmly.

"Whatever." Sam said, sighing.

We continued down the road to the destination in silence. Siobhan and I glanced at each other once in a while but never commented. I felt my eyelids shutting from the weight of them and I let them as sleep overcame me.

After a few hours drive I felt someone shaking me gently awake. I slowly opened my eyes to find that Dean was looking over me and had his hands on my shoulders. He smiled slightly as I looked up at him,

"Sleeping beauty awakes."

I groaned as I opened my eyes fully and forced my body to move out of the car. It had stiffened up because of the position I had been in in the car. I stretched and looked over at the house,

"I'm guessing this is where we need to be?"

Dean nodded, "Sam told me to come here so I guess whoever's here is here."

I put a hand on his arm comfortingly, "I know you're worried about Sam and you have every right to be but I just want you to know that I'm here. I am in the same boat as you now since Siobhan seems to be following Sam around a lot lately. I hope she doesn't get herself into too much trouble."

"Hey," Dean said, lightly, "We'll deal with whatever comes. Now, let's go and talk to whoever we're supposed to talk too."

I nodded and walked to the direction of where Sam and Siobhan were waiting for us. Sam had some binoculars pressed against his eyes as we arrived.

"Are you sure that's him?" Dean asked, walking up to Sam.

Sam passed the binoculars to Dean and Dean pressed them against his face and looked in the direction that his brother was looking in just seconds ago.

"Only Jack Montgomery in town." Sam answered.

Dean took the binoculars off his eyes and handed them back, "And we're looking for..."

"Travis said to keep an eye out for anything weird." Sam explained.

"Weird?" Dean asked.

"Yeah." Sam said.

"Alright, well, yeah, I've seen big weird, little weird, weird with crazy on top. But this guy? I mean, come on, this guy's boring." Dean stated, and both Siobhan and I gave a snort because of Dean's little rant and then both looked at one another. It had been the first sort of proper contact that we'd had since the Ruby episode.

Sam shrugged, "I don't know, Dean. Travis seemed pretty sure."

Dean took a pair of binoculars and so did Siobhan and I. We sat down and waited for a while. Just as things were starting to get boring, Jack Montgomery bagan to get interesting. He ravaged the fridge for food to eat and he didn't finish the food he had started. He just kept eating. After a while of this he stopped and we all take our binoculars off our faces.

Sam voiced what all of our minds had probably been thinking, "I'd say that qualifies as weird."

I nodded in dumb silence at what I'd just witnessed.

After what we'd just witnessed we headed back to the motel we were staying at to sort out what we were going to do with Jack and his problems. I couldn't remember the episode fully so when we arrived back in our room I was surprised to find someone, other than ourselves, already occupying it. I glanced at Siobhan and I could tell that she was surprised too. I saw that Dean was smiling slightly at the guy. Before I could question who it was Sam said,

"Travis."

So, it was the person that Sam was talking to on the phone.

This Travis was sitting at the table with a beer in his hand. He grinned as he saw the boys but his expression became curious as it landed on Siobhan and I.

"See, Sam. Told you we should have hid the beer." Dean commented.

Travis got up from where he had been sitting and advanced towards us.

"Smartass. Get over here." Travis told Dean.

They must know each other, I thought. Dean and Travis hugged before they let go of one another.

"Ahh, good to see you." Travis said.

"You too." Dean nodded in agreement.

Travis then hugged Sam.

"Good to see you."

"You too, Travis."

When they broke apart Travis commented, "Man, you got tall, kid."

This made us all laugh but Travis stopped first when he noticed Siobhan and I again.

"And who are these lovely ladies?" He asked, while he stepped towards us.

"Not for your viewing pleasure." Dean joked but then went on to say, "This is Marthe and her friend Siobhan. They've been traveling with us for the past few weeks."

"We've been trying to look for a friend of ours. You haven't seen a girl who's short, with short redish hair and has glasses have you?" Siobhan asked.

"No, I'm afraid not. I'll keep a look out for you girls though. I'll get in touch with the boys if I get a catch onto anything that might have fit that description." Travis told us.

"Thank you." I said, gratefully.

Travis nodded and then turned back to the boys, "How long has it been?"

"Ah, gotta be 10 years." Sam answered.

"You still a... oh, what was it... a mathlete?" Travis asked Sam.

Sam scoffed before he said, "No."

"Yep, sure is." Dean answered.

"Been too long, boys. I mean, look at you. Grown men. John would have been damn proud of you. Sticking together like this." Travis carried on.

Siobhan and I glanced at one another with worried expressions as Dean commented,

"Yeah. Yeah, we're as thick as thieves."

I glanced at the boys and saw that Sam's smile had disappeared from his face.

"Nothing more important than family." Dean commented.

I winced at the comment and saw that Siobhan was glaring at Dean.

"Sorry I'm late for the dance." Travis said.

I moved towards where Dean was sitting and sat beside him whereas Siobhan did the same with Sam. Travis sat at the table where he had been originally sitting at.

"Thanks for helping out an old man. I'm a little, uh, shorthanded."

Travis indicated his arm which was covered in a cast. The boys all laugh and I let out a chuckle.

"So, you track down Montgomery?" Travis asked, getting down to business.

"Yeah, we found him at his home." Sam answered.

"And?" Travis prompted.

"Well, he had a hell of a case of the munchies, topped off with a burger he forgot to cook." Dean said.

"That's him alright." Travis said, nodding.

"What's him?" Dean asked.

"Boys, and ladies, we got a rougarou on our hands." Travis said.

"A rougarou?" Dean asked, confusion on his face.

He looked over to Sam, "Is that made up?"

I chuckled at the ironic question that he had just asked but shut up quickly before Dean commented,

"That sounds made up."

"They're mean, nasty little suckers. Rotted teeth, wormy skin, the works." Travis explained, the description made me shudder and I saw that Siobhan had shuddered as well.

"Well, this ain't this guy. I mean, he was wearing a cellphone on his belt." Dean said.

"He'll turn ugly soon enough. They start out human, for all intents and purposes." Travis told us.

"So, what? They go through some kind of metamorphosis?" Sam asked.

Travis nodded, "Yep, like a maggot turning into a bull fly. But most of all they're hungry."

There was a silence before Dean questioned, "Hungry for what?"

"At first, for everything, but then ... for long pig." Travis explained.

"Long pig?" Dean asked.

"He means human flesh." Sam explained, and Siobhan and I gasped at the realisation of what that meant.

"And that is my word of the day." Dean said, sarcastically.

"Hunger grows in, -" Travis started.

"What happens?" Sam interrupted.

"They transform completely and fast." Travis explained. "One bite's all it takes. Eyes, teeth, skin; all turns. No going back either. They feed once, they're monsters forever. And our man Jack's headed there on a bullet train."

"Well, how'd you find this guy if he's walking, talking human?" Dean asked.

"Lets just say it runs in his family." Travis said.

"You mean, uh..." Sam trailed off.

"Killing his daddy in '78. Son of a bitch, pardon the language ladies, mangled 8 bodies before I put him down. Guy used to be a dentist. Cadillac, trophy wife... Little did I know, pregnant trophy wife. She put the boy up for adoption. By the time I found out, he was long gone, lost in the system." Travis explained, with a shrug.

"You mean to tell me you couldn't find someone?" Sam asked, looking at Travis with a dumbfounded expression on his face.

Travis sighed, "I'm not sure I wanted to. The idea of hunting down some poor kid... I don't think I'd have the heart. No. I wanted to wait, make damn sure I had the right man. Apparently, I do."

He took a swig of beer as Siobhan and I shared a look of worry. Would this mean that the boys were going to have to kill this man? It was a human life we were talking about after all. Dean moved from the bed to the table as Travis went to get some fire cans.

"They need fixing. Since you boys are here I could use you're help on fixing them. You ladies any good at fixing fire-cans?" Travis asked Siobhan and I.

"Have no clue what they are. So, I'd say no. Sorry." I apologised.

"Ditto." Siobhan answered.

"No worries." Travis said, before he placed the fire-cans on the table.

"So fire, huh?" Dean asked, while he reached for one.

"The only way I found to kill these bastards; deep-fry 'em." Travis explained.

"Well, that's gonna be... horrible. Is that what you did to Jack's dad?" Dean asked.

"Uh-huh." Travis answered, while trying to fix one of the fire-cans.

Just then Sam entered with a bunch of paper in his hands. He gave a small smile towards Siobhan and then looked back towards Travis and Dean at the table.

"Not wasting any time, are you?" Sam asked them.

"None to waste. The guy hulks out, we won't be finding bodies, just remains." Travis told us.

Sam sat down at the table before asking, "What if he doesn't hulk out? I did a little homework. Uh, I've been checking out the lore on rougarous."

"What? My 30 years of experience not good enough for you?" Travis asked him and I could see Siobhan glaring at Travis.

"What? No. No. I-I-I just wanted to be prepared. I mean, not that you didn't..." Sam trailed off.

"Sam loves research. He does. He keeps it under his mattress right next to his KY. It's a sickness." Dean looked over to Sam, "It is."

I rolled my eyes before Sam continued, "Look, everything you said checked out, of course, but uh. I found a couple of interesting stories about people who have this rougarou gene or whatever. See, they start to turn, but they never take the final step."

"Really?" Dean asked, sounding genuinely interested.

"See, if they never eat human flesh, they don't fully transform." Sam said.

"Basically. Or in this case, eat a lot of raw meat, just not..." Sam trailed off.

"Long pig." Dean finished for him.

"Right." Sam nodded.

Dean smiled a little and I could see that Siobhan looked proud of Sam but Travis commented,

"Good on you for the due diligence, Sam." Travis stood up from the table, "But those are fairy tales."

Siobhan and I glanced at each other. I was starting to not trust this guy. Travis went over to the little pantry in the corner and poured himself a cup of coffee,

"Fact is, every rougarou I ever saw or heard of... took that bite."

Sam stood up before saying, "Okay, well, that doesn't mean that Jack will."

Dean stood beside Sam before Travis asked,

"So what do we do? Sit and hope and wait for a body count?"

"No, we talk to him. Explain what's happening. That way he can fight it." Sam explained.

"Fight it?" Travis laughed before continuing, "Are you kidding me? You ever been really hungry?"

Dean looked up from the papers that Sam had bought in and listened to what Travis was about to say,

"I mean, haven't-eaten-in-days hungry?"

"Yeah." Dean nodded.

"Yeah. Right then. So somebody slaps a big, juicy sirloin in front of you, you walking away?" Travis asked.

Dean looked thoughtful for a moment. I looked at him with a hope that he would say 'yes' but knew better of it. Dean shook his head and looked over at Sam.

"That's what we are to him now, meat on legs. I'm sorry. I'm sure he's a stand-up guy, but it's pure, base instinct. Everything in nature's gotta eat. You think he can stop himself 'cause he's nice?" Travis asked.

"I don't know. But we're not gonna kill him unless he does something to get killed for." Sam said, his voice firm and serious.

Sam then walked out of the room with Siobhan at his heels. Dean looked over at them as they walked out and Travis looked over at both Dean and I with a puzzled expression.

"What's up with your brother?" Travis asked Dean.

"Don't get me started." Dean said.

"And what's up with your friend?" Travis asked me.

"I think it's a case of puppy love. She seems to be following him everywhere." I shrugged took the place next to Dean.

"Do you want to go after her?" Dean questioned me.

I shook my head, "I've already got her out of trouble once in 24 hours. I'm not going to do it again any time soon. She can fend for herself. She has Sam."

Dean nodded and then both Travis and himself sat back down at the table and started fixing the fire-cans again. I stood for a minute thinking about everything and then I realised that we were going to be killing a human being in probably the next few hours. I felt a little faint so I sat down beside Dean and watched what the boys were doing so I could try to take my mind off the fact of what we were preparing these weapons for.

Hey everyone! I hope you're all doing well. Sorry this was a chatty and not much action chapter. Hopefully there will be more in the next chapter. I need to start writing it xD See you all next week. Toodles!
