A young boy with purple hair stood between two corpses. Those two corpses had purple hair as well. Those two corpses had also been the young boy's parents. Those two corpses that had once been his parents had saved him from joining them on the floor as a corpse as well. He looked around warily, the humid and dark street soon filled with lights as people walked out after the commotion had died down. Cowards. He heard sirens wail in the distance and more tears rolled down his cheeks. They were coming too late. They were always too late.

His legs gave out beneath him and he kneeled in the pool of blood. His eyes widened in horror. He got his new pants stained… stained in his parent's blood. His parents… He clutched his stomach at the gory sight of his beloved parents. His momma and poppa. Gone. He felt himself lose his dinner right on the street. As he continued to empty his stomach and cry, two cars pulled up nearby, serious men in uniform coming out.

They slowly strut up to him, looking mildly disgusted and uninterested. They just wanted to get the job done, get the brat in some foster care facility, and go home. Eventually the young boy's stomach had nothing more to give, and all that came up was saliva, until he slowly stopped and put his hands on the ground – in the blood – and panted, attempting to catch his breath. His wide purple eyes looked up at the man slowly crouching down.

"We'll make this quick, so tell me your name and what happened."

The voice was so cold, so uninterested, so unsympathetic. As if not caring that a child had just watched his parents die in front of him. His only reply to the question was a choked sob and more tears. The man gave an impatient sigh and rolled his eyes. All the boy wanted was a warm hug from his momma, or a gentle smile from his poppa, but he got neither, rather the bloodied, blank expressions of his deceased parents. He wanted to hear their laughter again, he wanted to see their smile, their warmth, their pride in their son. His eyes began to darken in the corners and he felt like the world was spinning at a break neck speed. Eventually the boy found his face falling towards the ground and his vision blacking out entirely.

When he next came to, he found himself surrounded by frowning, condescending adults. He was offered a mug of water and he drank it greedily, desperate to rid himself of his sudden thirst, his throat feeling an awful lot like cotton. Then the questions began;

"Did you see the person?"

"Were there more people?"

"Was there a vehicle?"

His head spun. He tried with all his might to respond coherently. Eventually the questioning was over, and he felt empty and hollowed out. He felt like a log that had been hollowed out with a dull kitchen knife. He began to cry again, and once again his vision darkened and he was out like a room swallowed in sudden darkness.

Darkness. His eyes opened but they still felt like they were closed. He cried out in fear, not knowing where he was. He felt around, his hands groping a rough and itchy cot. A light blinked on, and he noticed a young man with brown hair, glasses, and a calm expression. A little girl stood by him, clinging to his pant leg.

In a soothing voice the man asked, "Tell me little one, what is your name?"

The boy's throat felt tight. Memories flashed back and he almost broke down again, but slowly, and awfully quietly he said, "Ga… Gakupo…"

He smiled gently. "Hello Gakupo, my name is Kiyoteru, and from now on I'll be taking care of you, alright?" Kiyoteru slowly walked towards Gakupo, seating himself and patting his back in a calming gesture. He tilted his head towards the little girl, who walked over and pat his knee with a smile. "That's Yuki."

It went on for days like this, Gakupo would wake up, half expecting his parents but instead finding Yuki napping with him, sometimes Kiyoteru smiling over at them. They were very kind people, but he wanted his mom, his dad, his old house and life.

Gakupo slowly got accustomed to this, and he opened up to the world outside him, one step at a time. Kiyoteru didn't deem him fit for public school yet, so for a year he had been homeschooled. But however, once he was ready, he went and made friends, and in one of his last years he remembered meeting a lovely, shy teal-haired girl.

Miku. They had met in the lunch court, and had become fast friends, laughing and swapping stories, and they even exchanged their pasts. He felt so much pity for her. He tried to help her. He really tried. She was fine at first, but things reached their climax and pretty soon she shut everyone out. There was nothing he could do anymore except do the same. In truth he was a bit envious of her having her parents, but he soon realized her situation. Sure, he missed his parents an awful lot, but he wouldn't want to have Miku's parents.

Gakupo wanted nothing more than to help her, but all his efforts remained fruitless. He got so damn agitated, that he slowly began to resent her. If I was in her place, he thought, I would gladly accept all the assistance I could get.

Once his frustrations were ebbed he realized that he wasn't in her position, and he had no idea how it must feel to have parents that way. His own parents were stern, but very kind, shaping him into the young man he was now. Even Kiyoteru and Yuki had been kind to him. He didn't know what could happen to Miku if she did anything about her parents. What if her parents hurt her far worse than ever before? What if they brought her down with them? There were so many possibilities that he didn't want Miku to experience, but still, he did want her to be out of that place. Gakupo felt possessive of her in a fatherly way, and he didn't want harm to come to her.

The days dragged on like this, until he stopped knowing how Miku was doing, however he hoped and wished Miku to be fine, for her situation to be better.

That was all he could do now. Hope.
