Chapter 2: Of Training and Goals
"Naruto keep your knees bent," a female voice instructed, "And stay on the balls of your feet." She continued to watch as the young boy corrected his mistakes and resume his drills. The woman was highly impressed with the improvement that the blond had shown in the last few months.
When she had been offered the chance to train the boy she had practically jumped at the chance. To be able to teach the son of one of her idols the sword style of her other idol, it was almost too good to be true.
She could still remember the first time she stumbled upon the two of them in the middle of a 'light' spar. Between the Titania's swordsmanship and the natural skill and those chains of the Red-Hot Habanero it was a sight to be held. Of course the two did not know the meaning of restraint ended up destroying the training grounds and majority of the surrounding area.
Even their reactions when the Hokage appeared and started reprimanding them for the destruction stuck out in her mind. The Uzumaki laughing while rubbing the back of her head in embarrassment and the Scarlet ready to accept any form of punishment from the elder. It was these two that lead her into picking up the sword in the first place.
The sound of someone running into the area drew her attention away from her thoughts. Turning she caught sight of her other 'student' entering the training grounds. She waited silently as Tenten ran up to her and caught her breath.
"Sorry, Yugao-sensei, Dad got a shipment of materials in and needed some help getting them organized."
The purple-haired kunoichi just waived her off and instructed her to begin her own training. Tenten's training was a bit different from Naruto's at the moment. Where Naruto was just really learning the way of the sword and weapons in general, Tenten already had many basics down but the down side was she had tried to master too many at once and as such need correction on many of the minor aspects. But that was why she was here and as such will help them the best she could.
The next hour passed as Yugao watched the two young children train from the side randomly inputting corrections and acknowledgements of correct form. She had found it best to give encouragement to the two to keep their spirits up and let them know that they were doing it the right way to balance out the corrections.
Such a teaching style was much different from what she had to deal with early on when she started her training. Back then her sensei had only reprimanded her on what she was doing wrong and never showed any focus on the improvement she was showing. As such, it almost cost her, her life when she got into her first real interaction with an enemy shinobi. With all that she had been told she was doing wrong, she was so unsure of her own skills it almost cost her. But to this day, she did not blame her old sensei for it, as he was not a swordsman, but only was able to see where she was showing openings in her style.
"Looks like they are doing well." A voice spoke up from behind the young woman. On instinct her hand slid over and grasped the hilt of her own sword.
Looking back over her shoulder, Yugao caught sight of familiar ANBU captain leaning against the trunk of a tree reading an orange covered book, and let go of her weapon. "Inu-senpai, glad to see you're early."
"Well you know me, I'm always on time." the Dog masked ANBU replied. Yugao could almost see the eye smile he always did under the mask.
She just smirked in reply, "From what I hear that wasn't always the case." Happy to see the experienced ANBU flinch slightly at that, "I heard once you showed up late to go on a mission with the famed Titania."
Inu let out a sigh at the reminder as his shoulders dropped, "In all my years of combat, Her punishment for being late was the closest I've been to death in a long time."
Such a statement caused Yugao to let out a chuckle, "Well, at least you won't be late anymore."
Inu chose to ignore the comment as he looked out at the two youngsters and watched them train. "So what do you think of them?"
Looking back out at her two students Yugao called out for them to take a break before shifting into a professional mood and giving her analysis. "While both are still very raw and young, they have each showed an aptitude for the skills required to handle weapons at an exponential rate. Tenten with the knowledge that she already had on multiple different weapons, seems to be better suited for a long-range style due to her quickness and flexibility. But at the same time shows a small amount of skill in close range, although with the lack of physical strength she has at the moment I have been pushing more with working on her accuracy with throwing weapons while moving to improve her already amazing accuracy."
"How accurate is she?"
"I fully believe that she should be able to tie the record and hit every mark by the time the academy will get around to the first round of progress testing."
The silver-haired ANBU was a bit impressed at that statement. While it was not as uncommon many thought for an academy student to hit a perfect score when testing, it usually did not happen until their third or fourth year. For someone to be in their first year and do such, it was a feat that was almost unheard of.
"And what of Naruto?"
"So far he has shown to be a natural with the sword, and has started to pick up Kushina's family style with relative ease. He has already learned a few of the beginning forms and has worked on being able to use the style with a few of the different swords he has been able to summon." Yugao stated, "He has been able to show some skill with kunai and shuriken, but not nearly to the extent that Tenten has. Physically he has shown that he gained his mother's strength. At the moment he lacks the speed needed to excel, but that will come as he ages and trains."
Kakashi stood quietly as he went over the information. If Naruto could even come close to what his mother was able to do and Tenten could continue to grow as Yugao predicted, the two of them will be very formidable shinobi in the future.
"I still can't believe you're getting to learn this style," Tenten stated as she looked down at the scroll that Naruto pulled out during their break, "I mean the learning the same techniques of the Red-Hot Habanero. That's amazing!"
"Well the old man said it wasn't really her style per say, but more of a family style and she focused on other styles of fighting," Naruto replied before getting a confused look on his face, "But was this Kushina really that great?"
Tenten's head instantly shot towards him as he said this. She could not believe he did not know who she was. As someone who wanted to be the next greatest kunoichi, Tenten had spent a lot of time studying many of the famous and powerful ninja over the years. And as such the idea that others did not put the same effort into learning about them did not cross her mind.
"Really? While she may not have been as well-known as the Sannin, the Yellow-Flash, or the White Fang, not to mention the Hokages, but she was powerful in her own right. It was said that in a fight she was a demon and had a style that would be devastating on her opponents." Tenten spoke as if she was giving a lecture, "There isn't much information on her style other than her using some kind of chains as a part of her skills and a bit of other minor information, such as…"
Naruto sat listening to his friend as she went on about the woman who was meant to be his godmother. He never really thought about going back and trying to read about her, or even other famous people throughout the history of Kohona and the rest of the elemental nations for that matter. But with the animated way Tenten was talking, he felt he should get into reading about them.
"… Sadly there is barely any real in-depth information on her. Even less on another kunoichi that showed up during the Third Shinobi war."
"Another kunoichi?"
"Yeah, I've the only real information I have been able to find on her was that she was a master swordsman and was known to be seen around the Yellow-Flash and the Habanero."
"Really? If she had been around the Forth I would have thought she would have been more information on her," Naruto alleged as he thought about that.
"Exactly!" Tenten exclaimed, "It's as if she just appeared on day and BOOM!" throwing her hands up in exaggeration, "Instant bad-ass kunoichi with amazing sword skills. I mean, come on at least let me learn her real name."
"Yeah that is strange. You would think that Kohona would want someone who skillful to be well-known." Naruto replied before something that the Hokage had told him entered his line of thought. "Maybe, there is limited information on her because people would use that info to hurt someone that was close to her."
"Hmm, maybe you're right. But who would be in danger from something like that?"
"I don't know," Naruto concluded while completely ignoring the feeling that he was missing something important.
Tenten's brows furrowed as a thought suddenly crossed her mind, "Hey, Naruto, you said that the Hokage told you that your mother was an expert swordsman right?" Getting a nod in reply she continued, "You don't think this mystery kunoichi wa…"
"Alright, breaks over," Yugao spoke up interrupting the two before they started getting into classified information. "Now it's time for a new form of training."
As soon as she mentioned training, the train of thought that Tenten was following jumped the tracks and was lost into the back of her mind. And Naruto just let it slide; figuring if it was important Tenten will bring it up again later. Do not let it be said young children had long attention spans. Really was the case with ones excited for something.
"What we going to be doing?" both of the young children asked looking up at the purple-haired woman.
"In a moment, first," Yugao first motioned for the ANBU to step forward, "This is Inu, he is an ANBU member that I asked to assess your skills and at times he may help in your training." Both children gave the man a small bow in welcome.
"Now, for your new training drill. It is a very simple drill, but has a great reward for completing it." An evil smirk graced the woman's face as a pair of kunai appeared in her each of her hands. "Evasion training," she stated with a hit of amusement in her voice.
Hours later the two young shinobi-in-training limped into the small ramen shop and all but collapsed onto the counter as they took a seat. The two were covered in cuts and sweat as they rested their heads.
"Well, looks like you two had a good day," Teuchi said jokingly as he looked down at the two. Getting a groan in response caused the man to let out a chuckle as he turned and started making the two a meal. He figured at the moment the two would not care what it was, as long as it was food.
"Tenten?" Naruto groaned out. The said girl did not reply instead just turned her head to look at him. "I think they were really trying to kill us."
Before Tenten could reply a new voice cut her off, "Ah, Naruto, Tenten, you two alright?" Looking up, the two caught sight of the chef's daughter entering from the back of the shop.
"Yeah, we're fine, Ayame," Tenten replied, "Just a rough day of training."
Ayame looked between the two and just took it in stride. "Seeing you like this makes me glad I didn't choose the ninja path." At one point she had thoughts about joining the shinobi corps along with some of her friends, but in the end she chose to follow her father's footsteps and learn how to run the restaurant. Of course Teuchi was relieved when she told him about her choice. He already worried enough about her that he did not need her running out on missions where she could be killed or worst.
"Maybe, for you, but I wouldn't want it any other way. Besides I would have never met Tenten if I didn't choose it."
Tenten just smiled and agreed with the boy as the three started talking about the training the two were doing and how everything else that they could think of. It was not long until their meals were ready and the two started digging into their ramen. The two barely noticed another figure slide into the seat next to Naruto until Teuchi spoke up.
"Greetings, Hokage-sama. What brings you here this evening?" At this both children stopped and turned to the new comer and saw it really was the elder hokage.
"Old man!" Naruto said excitedly before getting an elbow in the ribs from Tenten.
"Show the Hokage more respect, Naruto."
The elder hokage just chuckled at the sight. "Good evening, Teuchi, Naruto, Tenten. I was just taking a bit of a walk and chose to grab a bit to eat. If it wouldn't be too much of a hassle." Taking the hokage's order, the ramen chef got to work along with a second bowl for Naruto, know the kid would be asking for it soon.
While the food cooked the elder hokage turned and looked over the two youngsters. "So Naruto, how has your training been going?"
"It's been great, old man. Yugao-sensei has been amazing and she knows a ton of stuff and neat tricks," Naruto replied, "It won't be long now until I'm strong enough for you to tell me about my parents."
The hokage was silent for a moment as he listened to the boy's claim. He knew that such an idea was the young boy's goal and fully supported it. But unknown to the boy at the moment, he was to be much more than average shinobi, and while the age man disliked manipulating the boy, he knew it was for the greater good and betterment of the village. Sadly such it the life of most who contain one of the tailed-beast.
"And what after that Naruto?" Earning a confused look from the boy. "What will you do after you learn about your parents? Will that be it and you stop growing after that?"
"I…I never really thought about that."
The hokage patted the blond on the head as he spoke again, "It's quiet alright Naruto. You see, many people, ninja or not, always aim for a goal. Whether it is a small one or large, people will strive to achieve that goal. It is part of what makes us human, and be able to get up and move each day."
"But the problem comes from when a person reaches their goal. At that point some have no idea how to proceed. All the years of striving and sacrifice had finally paid off and they achieve what they were after, and now they had nowhere to go. Those people usually find themselves at a standstill after that. Unable to advance no matter how hard they try. Unable to find the drive that they use to have to achieve."
Naruto and Tenten sat quietly as they looked up at the old man. Taking in what he was saying, and seeing a new light on things from a man who had many experiences in his lifetime.
"Others though, will find new goals, ones that push them even harder. A new goal that might be even more impossible than some believe. But these are the one that tend to change the world. Maybe not the whole world as a whole, but the world of those around them and the ones that helped them."
The hokage started to dine on the ramen that was placed in front of him during his speech. He glanced over at the two and noticed he even caught the two chefs in his little ramble. Seeing as the main target of his speech was last in thought, the old man decided to pity the boy and give him a break.
"Don't worry too much about it now. And don't even try to think of a goal to set after reaching your first goal. You'll just end up driving yourself crazy over something like that. Instead why not think of multiple goals. Ones that would build on each other. I have always found those to work best."
"What do you mean by that, Hokage-sama?"
"Sometimes one goal can help you achieve another goal. Such as setting the goal to master a swords style could be used to achieve the goal to reach the next level of shinobi rankings. For Naruto here, the goal of learning part of his past could be a smaller step in becoming a shinobi known across the lands that could protect Kohona from any threat."
The rest of the meal was spent in relative silence as the two thought about what was said.
Naruto could hardly believe how fast the past year had gone by as he walked towards the academy with Tenten. Since he learned about his bloodline from the Hokage, his life had changed greatly. Between gaining a friend his own age and the teachings he was getting from Yugao and Inu, the young boy excited for the next few years of the academy. Maybe he could even be able to make more friends this year.
He fixed his new black shirt as he stared up at the academy. The shirt was a gift from Yugao that she bought him after a practice where she 'accidentally' cut the outfit he was wearing to shreds. He still did not see what was wrong with that orange jumpsuit, but at least the shirt she got him had orange strips going down the sides.
"Now Naruto," Tenten spoke up as they neared the entrance, "Remember that Yugao-sensei said she had a mission that will take up the rest of the week, and for us to take it easy."
"I know I'll just probably get just use to working with some of the larger swords I found." Just lately Naruto had found out that during his training his reserves were growing and he decided to experiment and found out there were blades in this pocket dimension that were as large as him. And he knew if he was going to be able to use them he had to get better and much more skillful.
Tenten nodded in reply. "One day we are going to find out everything you got in there. Who knows maybe you have a sword that can create fire or even lightning, now that would be cool."
"That would be awesome!" Naruto replied with eyes wide with excitement as he thought of those possibilities. Tenten nodded and agreed with the blond, part of her still a bit jealous that she could not have the same abilities. It did not take long before she noticed that the other students were now heading into their classes and thus knew it was time to split. Mentioning it to her friend, she started towards the second year section of the academy.
"Alright, I'll see ya later, Tenten," Naruto called out as he waved and went towards his new classroom.
Entering the room, the young Scarlet looked around and took notice of a few things. The first was that the class had a lot fewer students than he had to deal with while in the regular academy. Of course he understood since not everyone joined the shinobi academy, but to see a class of roughly fifteen compared to the thirty or so that he was use to was a bit of a shock. When talking to Inu and Yugao, he had come to learn that there would be two or three classes of first year students, but over the year the number of students would dwindle down due to some dropping out or the rare case of an unfortunate accident while training and by the fourth year there was usually only one class of students.
The second was that he could only recall one or two that were with him in the regular classes. That meant that the rest did not know who he was and maybe he could befriend them easily. Naruto looked around the class at the students already in seats for the first person that he was going to try to befriend. Catching sight of one boy on the other side of the class looking out the window with his chin resting in his hand, he chose to try there first.
Naruto slid into the seat next to the other boy with a smile and spoke up, "Hi, I'm Naruto Scarlet." The other boy turned to look at Naruto and onyx eyes met blue and took the hand that Naruto had extended.
"I'm Sasuke Uchiha."
((AN: Now I have thought about team placements and have chosen that Naruto will graduate with his age group instead of doing so early. Before people complain about not having Naruto graduate early I am basing this off my train of thought that if a student was really able to graduate early, then why did Sasuke or Neji not jump at that chance, both were cited as geniuses and as such would have easily pass the Genin test. To me that says that people knew of a rule that would not allow someone to graduate early unless it was a special scenario, such as in war, and as such those that did not like Naruto allowed him to try knowing that he would be unable to pass even if he was able to create the clones just to be able to insult him and try to keep him down. ))
