Chapter 4: Of Test and Bells

Naruto let out a groan as he handed in the test paper. He already knew that he was going to pass the exam, but they were never high on his list of things he wanted to do. While he was no idiot by any means, he was never the best with the in-class work and studies. Put him on a training ground any day and he'd run circles around most people, but paper test, even with the help from Tenten and his teacher this year, Irkua Umino, he would rather go through one of Inu's evasion training sessions.

The scar-faced man had quickly become the young blonde's favorite teacher in the academy. Yes, at first he was a bit like the others, not giving Naruto a second glance. Even calling him out on small mistakes, but eventually the teacher grew to like the boy and actually went out of his way to help with the subjects they covered in class. For that, Naruto was extremely grateful to the older man.

Naruto gave the man a smile and nod as he exited the classroom and towards the open area used for training. He had free time until after lunch to do what he wanted. Some used this time to rest and relax; others to cram in more training in hopes of passing the jutsu and physical test that were preformed later. At this point, Naruto figured he was as ready to pass as possible and any cramming at the moment would only do to hinder him.

As Naruto reached the open area he took a look around to see who all had finished already. He was not surprised to see Sasuke over by the throwing range tossing kunai at a target. The dark haired boy had not changed much since the incident, but constant praise by teachers did cause the Uchiha to gain a bit of an ego. Of course that ego had caused the two boys to butt heads more than once over the course of their academy career. Especially since Sasuke had chosen to pick up his own sword style and started using a chokutō.

Now being shinobi in training the two could not brawl as much as they wanted to. And were only allowed to challenge each other when the academy would hold days for sparing or under adult supervision. The last part was due to a time the two got into a fight after classes had finished and had resulted in both of them ending up in the hospital.

'The chewing out I got by Tenten and Yugao-sensei made sure we never tried that again,' the blonde thought as he looked away from the boy. Right now would not be the best time to try and talk to him.

Looking around he noticed a few others around the area. Most were trainees that were good in the book aspect of the academy but were barely average in the shinobi arts. There were really only three others of note around in the training ground that Naruto could see. One was a brown-haired boy with sunglasses on and a high collared jacket. Naruto knew it was his semi-friend Shino. The young boy had tried making friends with the Aburame not long ago, and while the taller boy accepted his friendship, he preferred to be by himself most of the time.

If Naruto remembered correctly Shino had explained their friendship as a "Logical choice to create a kinship with a fellow shinobi for purpose of future requirements." Of course Naruto just accepted it as a start and did not question his friend's choices. Naruto debated on going over and talking to Shino, who was sitting quietly under the shade of one of the trees, but the boy seemed to be studying something on the ground in front of him. Knowing the quiet Aburame, Naruto figured he was watching some kind of insect and did not want to disturb him.

The only other two worth noting were two of the girls in his class. They were two of the more vocal followers in the unofficial 'Sasuke fan club'; Sakura Haruno and Ino Yamanaka. The two of them had quite the rivalry over the course of the academy. Honestly, Naruto could not imagine two girls who fought and argued with each other more than those two.

Ino he knew a bit better, as she was a childhood friend of Shikamaru and Choji and has such had talked to the fellow blonde on numerous occasions. He found her nice and fun to be around most times, but she tended to be very bossy and loud to get what she wanted. She did not seem as enamored by the Uchiha as others in the class were, but she was just a devoted in gaining his attention.

Sakura on the other hand he only knew around class. The few times he tried talking with her, she just told him to get lost. He knew she was a genius in the academy book work and was always near the top when test were handed out. She also seemed to put that intelligence to use in some of her combat skill, as she had learn to pump her chakra into her muscles giving her enhanced strength. Naruto had asked his sensei about the technique, but Iruka told him that it was an advanced skill that most don't learn until after graduation and that it took great control over one's chakra.

Both of them where of the group that he and Kiba had somewhat tricked into training more. And as a result they had really improved in their skills, but he did notice that a few months ago that Sakura had not been seen as much on the training grounds. He did not think much about it, as over time less and less of the girls had given up on trying that route since it had not shown any success in landing the Uchiha's attention. Although it did shock him a bit, as Ino had not stopped the training and he knew that with the rivalry the two of them had going, it did not make much sense for Sakura to pretty much let Ino take the lead.

He did notice that there were some changes with Sakura over the last month. The main change he noticed was with her hair. She no longer kept her long pink hair falling freely behind her. Instead it was tied into two low hanging braids that were tied with grayish-white cloth. Naruto could see the strategic advantage to the braids. As he knew Sakura was more of a hand-to-hand fighter than a support kunoichi and as such loose hair would only serve to get in the way when in a fight.

Most of his friends that he would normally talk to seemed to be still taking the test, or in Shikamaru's case already finished it but sleeping until he was forced to turn it in. Naruto let out a sigh as he figured the best option would be to just relax and grab some food before the second half of the test. Unfortunately he could not meet up with Tenten as she was out in a C-Ranked mission with her team.

Naruto hoped his team was not as eccentric as Tenten's was. He had met them a couple times over the last year, and had to say it was an experience. It was not as if they were bad people, although he could not wait to challenge Neji to a fight to see how good he really was. But the long haired boy seemed to carry an aura of superiority and a weird fetish with fate. Then there was Might Gai and Rock Lee, the two of them had left Naruto at a loss for words. Although he found out the two were good people and devoted to their training, which Naruto fully supported their strange ways, except for the genjutsu that appeared behind them. He still had nightmares due to that.

But he would deal with that when it came to pass. Right now, the blonde just wanted some food and to relax his brain a bit.

The rest of the day was spent testing their physical aspects with a series of different events. Each event was designed to test different areas of the academy student's body. There were areas for speed, strength, throwing accuracy, and even an obstacle course. Naruto easily took the top spot in the strength portion as no one else came close to him with that. He even took the top sport in accuracy, though tying with Sasuke with a perfect score. He could not wait to tell Tenten that he finally caught up with her in that.

The other two events Sasuke took the top rank, with Naruto coming in third in both. It was not surprising, as Naruto was far and above others in strength, Sasuke was the same in terms of speed. No matter how hard he trained, the blonde just could not seem to close the gap in that aspect.

"Looks like I win again, Naruto," a loud voice barked out from behind him. Naruto rolled his eyes and turned back to look at the bragging boy. Naruto let out a sigh as he watched his friend Kiba laugh with a young white pup barking in agreement while sitting on the boy's head. Not much had changed with the Inuzuka over the course of the academy except for getting louder. "You're never going to be as fast as me."

"We'll see Kiba; I almost caught you this time." If there was one thing he knew about his animalistic friend, it was that his competitiveness was almost greater than his loudness, and finishing ahead of the blonde in the two speed events was something that Kiba was going to hold onto for a long time. Over the years, Kiba's competitiveness usually caused him to challenge Naruto and Sasuke often. Sasuke tended to ignore the challenge, but Naruto liked it. Though, except for races, Kiba never came close to beating the Scarlet. But that did not discourage him from trying.

"Yeah that will never happen." Kiba brushed him off as he heading in towards the academy doors. Now all that was left was the jutsu portion of the test. Something that Naruto knew he was ready for and could not wait to finish to become a full fledge ninja. All he had to do was wait in the classroom for him name to get called. Sadly for his patience, his name was toward the back end of getting tested.

"Alright, Naruto," Irkua spoke from behind the desk he and Mizuki shared. "You were able to pass the written part of the exam, and the physical portion. Now you only have to perform the three standard jutsu; the henge, the kawarimi, and the bunshin to graduate."

Naruto grinned as he got ready. He had been putting extra training into these jutsu as soon as he had heard that they were part of the final. "Yes, Sensei," Naruto replied as he flashed the hand signs and switched with the log that had been placed for the students to use for the body replacement technique. Smiling as he got a nod of approval from the two teachers, Naruto moved back to the center of the room.

Next was the henge. Naruto knew this one by heart and has always found it the easiest to use. He did not know why but the transformation skill had always had come naturally to him and easiest to use. Flipping through the sign and in a puff of smoke revealed a prefect replica of the Hokage.

"Good job, Naruto," Irkua spoke in approval, "Now all you have to do is create a single bunshin and we will be finished here."

Naruto smirked in triumph as he dispelled the henge and prepared to produce a clone. Finally he could show off the amazing technique that the Hokage had given him for his birthday this past year. As he summoned the chakra for the jutsu, Naruto thought back to the day he was given the technique…

((Flashback))

Naruto was ecstatic. He was just turning 12 and in a few months would be able to graduate and be a full fledge shinobi. But right now all that really mattered was the party being thrown for his birthday. After the first eight years of birthdays spent mostly by himself, with the Hokage giving short appearances, having more people around to celebrate just caused the young blonde to be tremendously excited.

Though he was a little disappointed that Inu was not able to make, but he did get to meet two other people that Yugao had brought with her. One was a brown-haired man by the name Hayate Gekko, who was introduced as her close friend and training partner in swordsmanship. He wore the typical ninja outfit, with the green flak jacket and dark blue pants with white cloth wrapped around his right thigh.

The other was another purple-haired woman who said she was only there because Yugao had dragged her along. Naruto knew her from the few times while gathering groceries; apparently they shopped at the same stores. Anko Mitarashi, who she loudly announced herself as, wore a long brown trench coat, a metal chest plate with the Kohona emblem painted on the upper left side along with a fishnet style shirt underneath , and a dark blue skirt. But what stood out to Naruto about her appearance was the pair of gauntlets that she wore.

"Well," Anko explained when asked by Naruto, "Someone I knew back when I was a genin always wore armor and looked amazing. So I chose to try it out." She finished with a grin.

"Yeah, should had seen her when she first did it," Yugao inputted, "She tried to go all out, decked head to toe in it, and could barely move. How many times did you fall over before giving up?"

"Shut up!" Anko shot back face turning red in embarrassment as the others around them started laughing. "Fine, keep laughing; I'm going to all the cake then."

Naruto''s eyes widened at that. If there was one thing in the world he loved; it was cake. Though there was always something missing about them, but he could never tell what it was. But even so, there was going to be no way he would let someone else eat all of his cake, it was already hard enough knowing he had to share.

Moving quickly, the boy moved to in front of large cake all the while stiff-arming Anko to the side without a second thought. A few of the adults chuckled at the sight having seen someone else having done the same in the past. Seemed that Naruto picked up more than just the skill with blades from his mother.

It did not take long for the group to finish with the cake and move onto the few gifts that were for the blonde. Tenten and her father had gotten him a brand-new set of kunai, while Yuago and Hayate had gotten him a book on the basics of cleaning swords. Tenchi joked about how she was going to put him out of business if Naruto learned how to take care of him equipment for himself. He also got a coupon from Anko for a couple orders of dango from what she called 'the greatest dango shop in Kohana.' Even Irkua dropped by for a bit giving Naruto a small gift before taking off claiming that he had test that he had to finish grading.

But it was the gift from the Hokage that the young boy was most exited for. It was just a small scroll, but as he opened it he found that the elder man was giving him a new jutsu. One that the Hokage said would help him greatly with his problem with creating a clone.

"Now Naruto," the old man spoke as the blonde looked up from the scroll, "This is an advanced technique that many do not learn. And as such, I must require you to keep it a secret until I tell you otherwise." The young boy replied with understanding acceptance before turning back to the scroll.

Sarutobi just smiled and moved away from the boy, leaving him to his own before Tenten dragged him off to mess with some of the new kunai that he had gotten from her father. Sarutobi just smiled as he watched the two play/train as Yugao walked up to him.

"Sir, are you sure it is wise to have him learn that jutsu?" The purple-haired woman asked with concern, "It's a dangerous technique for anyone to learn, much less a child in the academy."

The Hokage gave a small smile at seeing someone truly caring for the boy's safety. He knew that she had grown to care for the child, but see it was a different aspect. "I understand your worry Yugao, but even with the extra chakra control that he has been putting, there has been no improvement in creating a simple bunshin. As such, giving him the shadow-clone technique will not only give him a powerful weapon to use in the future. It will also allow him to focus on other aspects instead of trying to perfect a jutsu he has no hope of accomplishing. But if you have worries of him learning it, just remember that you and Kakashi have experience with that jutsu and will be able to watch over him as he learns it."

"But won't it cause problems with him learning it with others once they learn about it?" Yugao asked knowing some of the older generation would not be happy with one so young learning a forbidden jutsu.

"Just leave that to me, Yugao. I will hand that when it comes to pass." Sarutobi had already thought about the repercussion that would come by following through with this plan, but that would be far outweighed by the positive that would come out from Naruto learning the Shadow-Clone. The blonde needed to be strong for the future and giving him such a rarely used jutsu would also have him gain more loyalty to the Hokage. Also the elder man did not want to even think of the thoughts that might creep into the boy if he failed the graduation based on a simple technique.

((Flashback End))

"Kage bunshin," Naruto called out as he pumped the chakra through his body. As soon as the words left his mouth a puff of smoke appeared next to him. The Scarlet stood proudly as the smoke cleared and a perfect replica was revealed next to him. It may not have been the bunshin they wanted, but it would pass him. Iruka and Mizuki's eyes widened at the sight. While they had both been told beforehand by the Hokage about the boy's technique, to see someone this young truly pull it off was something to be seen.

"Congratulations Naruto," Irkua spoke as he looked at the blonde, "You have shown enough skill to pass." Tossing the boy the metal plate that signified his passing, Irkua could not help but be proud. There was many with great potential in this graduating class and he had helped them all in one way or another.

"Yahoo!" Naruto gave a shout of excitement as he gave his clone a high-five and dispelled it. Irkua let out a sigh as the boy quickly tied the Hitai-ate around his head and take off out of the classroom.

"Looks like I'll have to hunt him down to tell him about when to meet to team placements." Irkua said with a laugh as Mizuki just sat quietly glaring out the door after the blonde.

The next few days for Naruto flew by as he waited for the team placements. As much as he wanted to get to missions and work to get stronger, he had a lot on his mind. After he had taken his photo for the shinobi ID card, the Hokage had summoned him to his office. Apparently the old man had wanted to talk to him about something.

Though this would be the second time he was heading to the office for whatever the Sarutobi wanted to talk about. The first time was interrupted by the old man's grandson; Kohonamaru. The boy had busted in and abruptly tripped over his own scarf and started blaming the blonde. Naruto denied the accusation but was quickly charged by the brown-haired boy, who was looking to avenge his bruised ego. Of course one very quick and rough defeat by the hands of Naruto had gotten the younger boy to heel and gain a form of respect/fear of the blonde.

The short scuffle and the arrival of Ebisu soon after had made the Hokage push his meeting back with Naruto for another day as some of the things that his grandson had said had riled up the blonde. What the elder man had wanted to talk about needed Naruto to have his head on straight and be able to take it all in. That and he hoped the Scarlet would be able to help his grandson who had taken off after the blonde as Ebisu was apologizing for intruding.

It had been a couple days since that time and the Hokage had finally summoned him back to the office. But in that time he did make a pseudo-friend in Kohonamaru while getting the boy to learn about getting stronger for the right reasons. 'If I knew he was going to challenge me again, I would have let the old man deal with him.' Naruto thought as he walked towards the Hokage Tower. 'But something about that scarf seemed familiar.' Apparently the young Sarutobi had taken to challenging Naruto to grow stronger.

Naruto let the thoughts slip from his mind as he entered the tower and made is way to the Hokage's office. The man's secretary had let him in quickly while telling him that the elder man was waiting on him. Walking into the office Naruto saw the Sarutobi quietly sitting behind his desk.

"Hello, Old Man-Hokage." Through the years the manners that were being driven into him had shown some promise, but it seemed the boy would never fully take it all in.

"Greetings Naruto," Sarutobi replied as the boy took the seat in front of him. "I have something very important to tell you. Something that has been kept secret from you since your birth."

Naruto's eyes widen as he heard this. There was only one thing he could think of that the Hokage could be telling him. But part of him did not believe he was being told this now. From the way the aged man had talked before, it had seemed he would have to be far stronger to learn it. "You..you mean my p..parents?" The words hard to form as he spoke.

Sarutobi closed his eyes and sighed as he heard the blonde. He was not quite ready for that information, and by keeping it from him it would force the boy to keep growing stronger. Or that was what the man had reasoned to himself.

"No, Naruto." Reopening his eyes as he saw the blonde sink in his seat. "That information is still out of your reach at the moment. But do not worry, just keep working to become the best you can be and you will learn of them soon enough."

"Yes, sir," the boy replied solemnly. "I just want to know"

"I know Naruto, but just keep working to protect Kohona and you will reach your goals." Sarutobi said reiterating the point. "Now then, the reason I called you here today," Sarutobi said squaring his focus on the young boy, "What do you know about the Kyuubi?"

Naruto sat quietly in the class room staring out the window at the mountain in the distance. Or more precisely the face of the Fourth Hokage that was carved into it. Part of him could not believe what the Hokage had told him, but it all made sense. The reason he was hated by a majority of the village, the reason he was ignored and the names he was called. Even with the friends he had gained, it had done nothing to soften the insults.

But to now know that one of the most powerful demons known was residing inside him. It gave a whole new meaning to being call a demon, and he hated it. They could not tell he was just the jailor and had not even had contact with the nine-tailed fox. But the Hokage did say that the Kyuubi had influenced parts of the boy. Such as his large chakra reserves, the enhanced healing, and the six whisker-like marks that graced is face.

Even with the perks he got from the fox did no balance out with the entire negative. He had to wonder why him. Why was he chosen to carry this burden? Of course he had asked the elder man, but the answer he was given, Naruto had quickly seen through and knew it was just something made up to avoid the truth. Naruto knew that as the Hokage there were things that had to be kept hidden, but for so much to kept from the blonde was getting to be too much.

Before he could continue that train of thought Irkua had interrupted the talking class gaining their attention. It was not long after that the teacher started explaining about the duty that they now had as shinobi. Giving them a final congratulation, the scar-faced man started naming off the teams. Naruto was only half listening as the teams were called off.

"Team Seven…," Irkua announced, "Naruto Scarlet..." There was a pause as he waited to continue. "Sasuke Uchiha…" Naruto nodded to that. If they were on the same team then maybe he could renewed their friendship and help the dark-haired youth. "And…" At this point Naruto knew the pauses were done on purpose. "Sakura Haruno." That came as a bit of a surprise. Putting three of the top students on the same team was not that common.

But Naruto's mind could already see the strategy behind it, with him and Sasuke being close range fighters and Sakura adding support with her strength. The team would already be a good offensive team, but their defense would be lacking. Hopefully their sensei could help on that front.

"Alright," Irkua said finishing up, "Now that you have your teams, your teams sensei will retrieve you shortly. Once again congratulations on passing and good luck." He finished as he exited the room leaving the genin to their own.

It was not long until team by team was called to meet their sensei until all that was left was a few teams, Naruto's included. Naruto had tried to get his team to talk to each other to get to know more, but Sasuke had just gave a grunt of annoyance and went to sit by himself. But surprisingly he was able to get Sakura to talk to him.

"So, Naruto, where did that emblem come from?" Sakura asked motioning to his shirt after a bit of chatting, "I saw it earlier and was wondering 'bout it."

Naruto turned showing it to her and looked back over his shoulder as he took in the orange emblem that stood out on his black shirt. "Well the night after graduation as I was getting ready for bed it showed up in my window. It was just there glowing a bright golden. I tried to see if who was doing it, but there was no one around."

"So you just decided to put it on your shirt?"

Giving a shoulder shrug as he answered, "Thought it was cool and asked my friend's dad to add it to my shirt. But of course had to get in orange."

"It looks like a fairy with a tail," Sakura stated as she thought about it.

"Do fairies even have tails?" he asked as he turned back around, "Do they even exist?" Confusion filling his head as he thought about it, not noticing the ghostly figure laughing as she hovered above the class.

"Well, we do live a world where people can summon talking animals and throw the elements around in attacks," Sakura replied putting her finger to her chin in thought, "Therefore it might be possible they are around somewhere."

Naruto was interrupted from replying by a familiar voice calling out for Team Seven. Turning to the door, the blonde grinned as he saw the purple-haired woman that had been training him the past few years. As much as he did not want to admit it, part of him was a bit scared of getting a sensei that would judge him for the fox. But he knew now that it would not be the case. "Yugao-sensei," he called out as he moved from his seat.

"Greetings Naruto," she replied with a nod, "You and the rest of the team follow me and we'll get to know each other." The three quickly followed the purpled-haired woman to a nearby park and found a place to sit. "Now then, welcome to Team 7, I am Yugao Uzuki, and I will be your sensei if you pass the genin test."

"Wait, didn't we already pass that test?" Sasuke asked not liking that fact that more obstacles were getting in his way.

The Jounin just waived him off. "We'll get to that in a moment, but first let's learn about each other. I'll start," Yugao said leaning back against a tree, "As I said I am Yugao Uzuki, Jounin, this is my first time testing a genin team. My likes are swords and a few other things. Dislikes include people who don't put everything into what they are doing. And any goals of mine; I'll tell you when I feel like it. Now then, ladies first."

Sakura straightened up from her seat in between the two males. "Well I'm Sakura Haruno, my likes are…" taking a glance at the dark haired boy next to her, "I dislike Ino-pig and goals for the future are…" shooting another glance at the boy who was ignoring her, "and to be a strong kunoichi that can be depended on."

The purple haired woman was a bit surprised about the Uchiha not being the complete center of her character. As she was it would not be as hard to mold than if she was completely devoted to the boy like some her age had seemed. "Alright Naruto, you go."

"Alright, my name is Naruto Scarlet. I like weapons, training, and my friends. I dislike the term demon." At this he earned a confused look from the two genin, but they kept silent. "My goal… to grow stronger than any of the hokage and protect the village."

"And finally…" the jounin motioned for the last of the group to speek.

"My name is Sasuke Uchiha. There are lots of things I dislike and don't really like anything and.. can't really call it a dream," the boy stated, "But more of an ambition. To resurrect my clan and… to kill a certain man…" he trailed off leaving the group in an uneasy silence.

Yugao nodded as the boy finished. She knew he was a work in progress with how screwed up his brother had left him. The boy was a genius when it came to the shinobi arts, but still had a lot to learn to truly reach his potential. But that was what she was here for. 'That is, if they pass the test.'

"Now that we know each other a bit," Yugao spoke, "I must inform you that you are not yet a genin team and still have another test to go before passing."

"Then what was the test we did for the academy?" Sakura asked the question that was left unanswered before.

"That was to see who among you would be able to have a chance to get to the next test to prove you're real genin. This test you will do is far more challenging than any you have done before and has a 66 percent failure rate."

"What?" Sakura and Naruto exclaimed to the announcement.

Yugao let out a chuckle at that. "This is not a game, children. This is real world now, and you will have to fight for everything you want from this point on. And this test will just be the start."

"What is the test?" Sasuke asked ready to take it on and start real training.

"That…" Yugao started, "Will be explained tomorrow morning." Her answer causing the three to sigh at not getting a hint. "Alright then," Yugao spoke up bring their attention back to her, "You three will be at training ground 57 tomorrow at six in the morning for your test. Oh yeah, if I were you, I would skip breakfast. Wouldn't want you throwing up on me. See ya tomorrow." With that she left the three young genin to their thoughts of what the next day would bring.

Waking up early was something that Naruto was use to as he usually went on jogs and did light workouts before going to the academy. So it was no different as he made his way to the training field in a light job, getting warmed up and ready for the test that Yugao was going to perform. Getting to the area, he started doing some light stretching as he waited.

It was not long until Sasuke arrived and followed soon after by Sakura, who looked the worst of the three in terms of waking up. But that was something Naruto was not going to tell her. He learned that the hard way by saying something similar to Tenten and he did not want to relive that with someone who could pump chakra into their fist with ease.

Figuring that it was close to the time Yugao said to arrive, Naruto finished his stretches and moved to lean against one of the training post as he waited. And waited…and waited.

"Ok, where is she?" Naruto asked looking around the field. From knowing her, the blonde knew that Yugao did not like being late and would try to avoid it when possible. Even the times she had to run late to practices she had only been a few minutes at most not the three hours. It was starting to get on their nerves.

"Good Morning," Yugao announced happily as she appeared in front of the trio.

"You're late, sensei," Sakura replied as she stood and moved to join her teammates that had already moved and were standing in front of Yugao.

Yugao just smiled and tilted her head a bit, "No, I'm not."

"But you said to be here at six."

"I said that you three should be here by six. I never said when I was going to show up." At that all three genin gave the purple haired woman a flat look not believing what they heard. Of course none of them had realized that her showing up late was part of the test she had planned for them. Getting them already agitated and a lack of breakfast would affect the way they think in different scenarios. "But anyway, time for your test."

At this the group refocused. "Now I stole this from a friend of mine, but it's a great way to test you and see who passes." Holding up two bells in her hand showing them to the three. "It's quite simple. All you have to do is get one of these bells from me before noon to pass."

"Why is there only two, Sensei?" Naruto asked. Years of working with her and Inu had gotten him to understand many things in a battle, but he just knew he was already missing something.

"Why yes," she replied tying the bells to her waist, "Only two of you can pass, the one who does not get a bell, well, they will fail and be sent back to the academy. Also the loser will also go without lunch while the others eat." She finished with smile that the younger three swore gave her an evil look.

The three shared a look before sliding into a stance ready to move. None of them wanted to be sent back for each of their own reasons, but before they could more the purple haired jounin vanished from sight. "Ah so eager," her voice announced from behind them causing them to jump in slight surprise and turn, "and here I haven't even said to begin."

Reaching into her pouch, Yugao pulled out a small clock and set it on the training post. "You have until this alarm goes off to complete your task," she said winding the clock. "Oh yeah, one last thing. If you really want one of these bells. Come at me with the intent to kill, 'cause I will not be holding back. Ready?...Begin."

With that two of the three genin shot off into the nearby woods. With them gone it left Naruto standing alone in front of Yugao. Grinning as he summoned a lone blade to his right hand and slid into a stance. He knew that there was no use hiding, it was not his way. He would do this just like everything else. Head on.

"Oh? Not going to try and hide Naruto-kun," Yugao stated as she drew out two kunai. While she knew the boy was skilled, it was time to show him what she could really do. There was a reason she took the Neko mask as an ANBU. If there was one thing she was known for it was her speed and agility. Dodging the first strike with a spin she easily blocked the follow up with her kunai.

"Com' on, I know you can do more than this," she taunted as Naruto attacked. Naruto just summoned a second sword and pressed on. He had improved greatly with duel-wielding and it showed with pushing Yugao back. Or at least that was what the jounin wanted the blonde to think.

Using his momentum against him, Yugao side stepped and sent a kick into is side forcing the blonde to tumble and roll along the ground. "At this rate I'm not even going to need to pull out my sword."

At this Naruto stood back up and stuck his swords in the ground next to him. "Then try this," he spoke as he summoned ten clones around him each with their own sword. It was something he had been working on since learning the jutsu. Combining the shadow clones with the magic of summoning weapons. It was still a work in progress but he did notice that the stronger the sword the less clones he could make.

Picking back up his swords, the blonde and his clones charged back in. Yugao was weaving expertly though the consistent attack from the blonde with ease. Even if there were eleven people attacking her at once, they were still clones and as such were predictable and got into a rhythm with each other subconsciously. Such an attack style was quite simple to counter if you already knew it such as she did.

Quickly making her way through the clones, she destroyed them at every chance she got until there was just two left. Naruto scowled as he saw how quickly his clones were getting dispelled.

"I know you did not think it be that easy, Naruto," Yugao stated as she through a kunai destroying the last clone, "You need to come up with something new to get one of these bells."

Naruto released the swords in his hands and let them return to his pocket dimension as he focused on a new plan. "No worries Sensei," Naruto commented as he stuck his arm out, "I got a couple new toys to bring out to play."

At the end of his hand a red circle appeared and spread out showing a complex design. Yugao took a step back as she eyed it, ready for an attack. She had seen those circles before and wondered what he would drawl out. In a flash of golden light a long spear appeared in his outstretched hand.

The spear had two pointed blades at its head and a decorated circular wheel connecting the shaft with the twin heads. The weapon's shaft was blue in color with a white ribbon underneath the circular wheel with two long loose strands. Yugao had seen that weapon before and knew it was dangerous, but it also depended on how much Naruto had worked with it to unleash its power.

Naruto spun it quickly in his hands already use to the weight as he slowly filtered his magic into the weapon. He had found this one not long ago and was testing it out when he found it was more than just a sharp stick.

Yugao seeing the lightning already sparking around the center mass of the weapon shot forward. Hoping to reach inside his guard before the blonde could attack. Yugao had to dodge to the side as she saw the points of the pike facing toward her.

In a flash a beam of blue lightning barely missed her as Naruto released the attack. Naruto spun the weapon in front of him, blocking the attack from the jounin. Unfortunately for the blonde, the pike was not a weapon to use for close range. Swinging up with the hilt creating separation and jumping back Naruto took the pike in both hands ready to charge again.

Not a moment later he shot forward the pike sparking with electricity as he attacked. Swinging across the body, Naruto released the built up power. And instead of shooting out like the last blast had, this time the electricity shot in all directions effectively blinding his opponent. Taking his chance the blonde shot forward and reached out for the bells.

Just as he was about to grab them a hand took hold of his wrist and pulled his arm away. "Not going to work." Yugao stated as she flipped the blonde around sending a chakra infused kick into his behind and watched as he flew off into the woods. "Ooops, might have put a bight much into that one." Yugao chuckled as she watched and leaned against the post, "Hmm, now, who's next?"

As soon as the words left her mouth, a blur shot out from behind a nearby tree. Sasuke having seen the fight had already came up with a plan and was dead set on passing. Closing the gap quickly, the dark-haired boy planted his left foot and sent a kick with the right to the mid-section of the Jounin, which she blocked with her forearm.

Smirking, the Uchiha used his momentum and continued forward using her arm as a brace and sending up his other leg towards her jaw. This time Yugao grabbed hold of the boy's leg and stopped the kick. Using the position he was, Sasuke pitched his chest forward, throwing a punch with his right hand towards the purple-haired woman's head while his left hand shot toward a bell.

Before he could realize what was happening, Yugao spun on her heals slamming the boy's side into the training post and dropping him roughly on the ground. "Good moves, genin," she spoke knowing by not calling him by name would serve to get him mad, "But you should always know your surroundings."

Sasuke quickly shot to his feet and pulled out his chokutō and putting both hands on the hilt. Taking a deep breath he shot forward again trying to prove that he was better than that.

"Hmm you're fast," the jounin replied as she blocked his strikes and worked to understand his attack pattern. "Dependently faster than Naruto, but you are nowhere near the power behind the strikes," she continued. Getting use to the style, Yugao started going on the offensive using a pair of kunai and pushed the young boy back.

Sasuke was almost growling as he was getting pushed back. Was he really this weak? To not be able to best this random jounin, then how was he going to be strong enough to kill him. Sadly his thoughts were distracting his fight as suddenly his back was pressed against the training pole.

Shooting inside his guard Yugao grasped her hand around the hilt of the blade in the Uchiha's hands. "Didn't I tell you to watch your surroundings?" she said with a grin, "Now for not listening you will lose your chokutō for the time being." In a flash the blade was ripped from the boy's hands and in Yugao's.

"Give that back," the boy growled as he glared at the woman. The said woman just continued to grin at the boy and stepped back. Giving the 'come get it' sign, Yugao blocked the boy as he attacked again. This time Yugao was not going to be easy on him. Using her experience she rapidly showed the boy how far he had to go to even be on her level of speed.

It did not take long before she dispatched the Uchiha in a similar way that she did to the Scarlet. Watching as he landed on the opposite side that she had sent Naruto, she brushed off her hands as she picked up the sword she dropped while finishing. Yugao placed the boy's chokutō on the ground next to the training post.

Stretching her arms as she loosened up a bit from the two fights, she thought about how they went. 'Well those two have great skill and power for ones their age. Greatly unrefined but they could be something special with the right training.' Looking up at the clock seeing how much time had passed. 'Time is moving fast isn't it? Well lets go see how good the third one is.'

Sakura crouched quietly behind a bush as she watched the open field. After watching both Naruto and Sasuke be defeated, and quite easily, she knew her only chance was to catch the jounin by surprise. Something the pink-haired girl knew was near impossible. But she would not give up. She had sworn to get stronger to gain the Uchiha's attention and she was not going to give up now.

"Wow, this is almost too easy," A voice spoke from behind Sakura. Shooting to her feet, the young girl spun and slid into an academy stance as she saw her sensei standing there with her arms crossed. "Well I've seen what the boys have. Now let's see about the girl."

Sakura inwardly groaned as she stared down her opponent. The one thing she did not want to do. Take her on head-to-head. Dashing forward, Sakura through a punch with her right hand. One that Yugao easily caught.

"Hmm good strength, but where is the chakra I was told you could put into it?" Yugao said calmly.

Pumping chakra into her arm, Sakura pulled her fist free from Yugao's grip and started back on the attack. None of her punches were connecting though as she continued to press on. Getting more and more frustrated as the one sided fight went on. The sudden unseen punch to her chest knocked the girl off her feet and gasping for breath.

"Still a ways to go," Yugao's voice carried thought the area as Sakura got to her feet. 'Where did she go?' she thought as she looked around trying to find the purple-haired woman. Suddenly two hands reached up from the ground and took hold of the pink-haired girl's ankles and slowly pulled her down.

Sakura let out a frustrated cry as all that was above ground was her head. Unable to move she was at the mercy of the woman who now stood above her with a grin. "Well, have fun digging yourself out if you can. If not, I might come back after the test is over," Yugao said as she walked off back towards the field as she finished, leaving the girl yelling out at her.

Naruto groaned in pain as he stood up. She was a lot better than he was expecting. He knew Yugao was strong from when she was training him before, but this was a whole new level. Had she really been holding back that much? But it did explain why no matter how much he improved she had always stayed miles ahead of him.

Racking his brain for possible scenarios to get a bell, there was only one that could come to mind. Unfortunately it was probably the only one that he could not get to work. 'Looks like I'll have to find the others,' he thought as he took off through the trees.

It did not take long for him to find Sakura, was not hard following the yelling, as she was buried to her head not far from him. Naruto could almost laugh at the glare he was receiving from her as he dug her out and told her what he had thought of. To his surprise, Sakura had quickly agreed stating that there was only a slim chance that they could do it on their own. And she had also told Naruto of the direction Sasuke had flown after his short-lived fight with Yugao. The two took off in the direction sticking to the trees and going around the open field.

Naruto landed behind Sasuke with a light thud alerting the boy to his presence with Sakura not far behind. Sasuke hearing the two arrive turned and stared at them before giving a grunt of annoyance. He did not have time to deal with this two. He had to pass this test and then nothing would stand in his way of his ambition. Turning back to look out to the open area looking for their sensei, the boy ignored their presence.

"Hey, Sasuke, listen," the Scarlet started but stopped seeing the dark-haired boy was not paying attention. Reaching up and grabbing his shoulder to try again. He was shocked when the Uchiha just shrugged his hand off and took a step away.

"Damn it, Sasuke," Naruto growled as he glared at the Uchiha, getting fed up with the attitude at the moment. "Listen to me, I got an idea."

The dark-haired boy just grunted but made no move to leave. Taking this as a sign of acceptance, Naruto started telling Sasuke and Sakura his plan. "First off we are going to have to work together."

As soon as those words left his mouth, Sasuke turned towards the clearing he knew their sensei was still at and prepared to leave. He already lost his sword today; he was not going to lower himself to get help in this fight. "I'm fine on my own." But before he could jump to the trees and take off, the tip of a blade was pressed against his throat.

"You've already tried that didn't you?" Naruto asked calmly as Sakura looked between the two of them, slightly scared of how this was going to play out. She knew that even with the training she had put in over the last few years, the two boys in front of her were still miles ahead of her in terms of skill.

"I will get that bell and nothing you can do will stop me." He spoke locking his glare on the blonde as his hand slowly crept towards the kunai pouch at his hip.

Naruto did not flinch under the gaze but instead just replied calmly, "We can kill each other over one of the bells later, but right now the three of us are going to have to work together to even have a chance of grabbing one. And you know that even if you don't want to accept it."

The two stood silently glaring at each other, neither wanting to back down. Sakura seeing that it was going nowhere but downhill if it continued, stepped up and put her hand on the sword slowly lowering it. "Sasuke, please," Sakura pleaded looking at her crush, "We are running out of time to fight with each other. So let's work with Naruto's plan and if we get the bells; I'll not take one to make sure you pass."

"…Fine," Sasuke grunted as he stood down. Passing and continuing his shinobi career was more important at the moment than a petty fight.

"Alright," Naruto said as he lowered his sword, "First off, is there any skills that you guys have been holding back? I pulled out my lightning pike but she just blew it off. I still have this up my sleeve though." With that he dispelled the sword in his hand and a new one took its place.

This one was larger than the last with the blade a crimson red in color with the exception of a small sliver of black in the middle. The guard shown with burnt orange and crimson gave off the appearance of a set of petals with the golden set closer to the blade. The blade its self was unique as the middle was thinner than that of the end giving it a leaf like shape.

"What's so special about that?" Sasuke asked not believing the blonde would show them a normal sword.

"This," Naruto stated as he pumped some of his magical reserves into the blade. In a flash the blade erupted into flames shocking the other two. "Found this out last week and I know Yugao-sensei has no idea about it."

"But she took care of your lightning with ease. What makes you think fire would be any different?"

"I am not use to working with a pike yet," the Scarlet answered honestly, "But with a blade; that is a different story. So what about you guys?"

Sasuke grunted before answering, "All I got is a few fire jutsu, like the Great Fireball and a few smaller ones. Would have some blade techniques but she took my chokutō."

Naruto nodded at the reply taking in the information along with what he knew and turned to Saskura. "How 'bout you? Anything you think could help us?"

The pink-haired girl stood quietly for a moment before replying, "I don't know how much it can help but I do have something." She reached into the pouch on her leg and pulled out a small scroll and opened it up. Pumping a bit of her chakra into it the boys were shocked when a set of tonfas appeared in her hands.

The tonfas were solid black with thick line of pink spiraling around the shaft from one end to the other. The main difference that Naruto noted from the regular tonfas he had seen at Tenchi's shop was that instead of the ends being blunt, they were replaced with points that looked like kunai.

"It's what I have been working on the last few months," Sakura admitted, "I've kept it quiet cause I didn't want Ino-pig to try to copy me and I'm still not that great with them yet."

"Wow that's awesome, Sakura," the blonde committed while Sasuke silently agreed with the statement. "Now that we got that the plan will be easier. So here is what we are going to do."

Yugao stood quietly next to the post with the alarm clock. 'Hmm, they should be making a move soon; they're almost out of time.' So far the three had already shown enough skill to be genin on power alone. And while that may pass for other hidden villages this was Kohona, and there was a lot more involved in being a shinobi.

Turning towards the sound of someone running, she caught sight of Naruto charging with a simple katana at his side. Yugao's eyes narrowed at this. She knew the boy was bright enough to know that such a simple move would not work on her. So what was his plan?

Jumping to the side as the boy slashed across where she stood, Yugao parried the following attack with a solid kick to the chest sending the boy back. 'Too easy,' she thought as she ready herself. Cursing as she sensed someone from behind. Sending a spinning kick towards the attacker, she was surprised it was blocked by black tonfa. Her eyes widened more when she realized who was behind the weapon.

Sakura smirked as she sent a punch with her other hand. "Got ya." Pumping chakra into her planted leg and used it to spring above the younger girl and sending a solid hit to her back. Yugao quickly got low down and swept the girl's feet out from under her as she was still stumbling. Not even waiting for the girl to land, the purple haired woman turned back to Naruto and blocked his swipe.

This time she noticed he had switched to a new sword. She knew something was different with this one and with knowing he already had a pike that could shoot lightning, she was not going to take a chance. Letting the boy set the pace as he defended, she was watching and waiting for whatever the blade had hidden to show up.

Jumping back as she sensed an attack coming from the side, she let out a light groan as she saw Sasuke had joined the fight. Apparently their plan was to get her away from the post where she had left the dark-haired boy's chokutō. Now she had three weapon users to deal with. While she knew she still had the upper hand, it just got a whole lot less fun.

"Well then, looks like I'll have to step it up," Yugao said as she reached up and slowly removed her own blade. Her eyes never leaving the three as they stood in front of her, Naruto and Sasuke in the front and Sakura farther back.

"Ready Sasuke?" Naruto asked earning a nod in reply. The blonde grinned as he started pumping magic into his sword. Of most of the things she was expecting, a flaming sword was not one of them she wanted to face. Not only was there the blade itself, but now the flames and heat were something she would have to deal with.

"Let's go!" Naruto shouted as he darted to the right while Sasuke went left. Yugao trying to keep an eye on them both stood still until they closed in. Dodging a flaming sword she countered an upward slash from the Uchiha. Yugao sent an open palm into the dark-haired boy's jaw as she landed a kick to the blonde's thigh. Using her sword, Yugao pushed an opening between the two and shot forward.

Surprising Sasuke as attacked him first. In a fury of slashes, Yugao cause a multitude of cuts to appear long the boy's arms as he tried to counter. Fortunately, for the boy a heat of Naruto's sword caused the jounin to advert her attention to the blonde. Panting, Sasuke slowly backed up looking for an opening. His pride wounded far more than his body.

Naruto was focused more than he had any time during training. This was something he had to do. He had to pass and become a genin, otherwise he would never be able to grow and protect people. Unfortunately, Yugao was not going to let him pass that easy as she easily countered and evaded the boy's flaming sword.

Using and upward strike, Yugao forced open Naruto's defenses and smirked. "You're open." Sending a chakra infused kick into the boy's chest and sending him flying back a good distance. Yugao was enjoying this spar, the two of them were far better than she expected and it was a good way to get a workout.

Naruto panted as he stood up and glared at his sensei. It was now or never, they had to do something or they would fail. Moving into a stance, the blonde raised his crimson sword over his shoulder like a batter would and focused as much power as he could into it. The others in the field stared in shock as the flames got larger around the sword and the entire area started feeling like a furnace.

"Flam slash!" Naruto yelled as he swung the sword releasing the magical build up in it. Yugao's eyes widened as a wall of flames came rumbling towards her. Thinking quickly, the purple-haired woman noticed that while it was far too wide to dodge to the side, it could be easily jumped over. Pumping the needed chakra into her legs, she jumped over the fire's path.

"Fire release: Great Fireball Technique" Hearing the words, Yugao knew she was in trouble. Another ball of fire heading right at her and in being in midair would not allow her to dodge like the last one. Looking quickly she noticed a log sitting perfectly by the training post. And without another thought she instantly performed the switch, letting the wooden log get burnt to a crisp.

Letting out a sigh, she was almost too late to stop the blow heading for her mid-section.

"Did you forget about me Yugao-sensei?" Sakura spoke as she started her own attack pattern. Yugao counters the pink-haired girl with ease. It seemed as if the girl was mostly self-taught and this was the first time using it against a real opponent. Something that would need to be worked on. Without a word, the former ANBU grabbed the girls arm and threw her into the oncoming boys. Causing the three to tumble to the ground.

Shooting forward as they started to get to their feet, Yugao aggressively switched into hand-to-hand not letting them gain a footing. Easily countering anything thrown at them, the jounin used their momentum and lack of working together to dispatch any attempts of a comeback. Grinning as she jumped back putting space between her and the young genin. She stood silently as she waited for them to make the next more.

But before the team could make a move the sound of the alarm clock erupted in the back ground. She let out a chuckle as Sakura and Sasuke collapsed to the ground while Naruto was forced to use his blade as a support. Maybe she could have gone a bit easier on them, but just like her idols, she did not like to hold back that much.

"Well that's it," she spoke shutting of the alarm, "None of you were able to get a bell. As such, the mission would be a failure. I am surprised that you three chose to work together, but even then you could not complete the task given to you. Such failure is not acceptable for a shinobi."

The three let out a groan as they heard of their failure. Unable to believe they were out classed by that much. For a three-on-one and to barely even touch her, it was embarrassing.

"That is being said. You all…," Yugao said gaining a dark look on her face. The three genin lowering their heads knowing what was coming next… "Pass." Finishing with a smile.

"What?!" Was the reply from the three as their heads shot back up wide eyed.

"I said you pass. Congratulations."

The three stood silently before looking at each other in shock. "But..But Sensei, we did not get a single bell." Sakura spoke up being the first to come out of the shock.

Yugao gave a nod, "Yes that is true, but that was not the purpose of the test. It would have been nearly impossible for three fresh genin to best a former ANBU agent. Experience goes a long way in a fight. Though I can honestly say some of the skills you three showed did surprise me a bit."

Honestly the three together might have been able to best some of the jounin that did not focus on taijutsu or even weaponry as much as the jutsu aspect. But she was not going to tell them that.

"Then what was the real purpose, Yugao-sensei?" Naruto asked.

"Teamwork." Was the reply as she went to describe the reason that they were put on teams and how important it was for them to be able to work together.

"If that is all, take the day off and we will start our training and missions tomorrow. Meet here at 7am." Yugao stated.

"Will you be here at seven too, sensei?" Sasuke asked not wanting another repeat of today.

"Ahh, learning already, I see." She replied with a grin, "Yes. I will be here at that time. 'Til tomorrow." Finishing with a wave and vanishing from sight.

"Alright, this is going to be awesome!" Naruto cheered in celebration. Sakura giving a bright smile and agreeing while Sasuke gave a grin knowing he was closing in on his goal.

"Good job, Naruto-kun," the ghostly blonde said as she watched the boy celebrate with is team from where she flew far above them. She had seen many teams throughout her life-time and afterlife, but this one she could tell had more potential than most could even comprehend.

"You will make a great Fairy one day," she continued with a bright smile on her face, "Continue to grow, Son of the Titania." With that the Fairy Tactician flew off with a destination in mind not noticing the blonde she was talking about seemingly staring in the direction she was leaving in.

If there was one thing she loved about being dead, it was being able to fly. To soar across the sky like a fairy brought so much joy to the pale-blonde girl. If only she was able to master this type of magic when she was alive, and to fully get the feel of the wind blowing through her hair and around her as she soared. But those thought were pushed to the side as she neared her destination.

Landing in a small field hidden away from the public, the green-eyed girl slowly hovered towards the final stone. She stood quietly over the well-kept plot of land and took it in. Part of her wanted to let out a chuckle as she thought about it. Here she was a ghost, standing in the middle of the hidden cemetery of the fallen Hokage's and their spouse.

"Greetings Erza Scarlet," the young looking girl spoke quietly, "Just wanted to inform you that your son has finally made his first step into the world. He has far to go, but he has the drive of a member of Fairy Tail."

Silence was the reply, which was not surprising as not everyone could create an astral projection of themselves after their death. "I must return home soon. I have been away from Tenroujima for too long and need to replenish my strength. I do not know when I will be able to return, but know I highly enjoyed our talks."

Running her fingers over the name engraved in the stone before placing a hand on the stone. "Rest well, Titania, you will always be one of my favorite fairies." Her voice lingered as she started to focus on the needed magic to bring her home.

"Who are you?" A sudden stern voice announced breaking her thoughts as she turned in surprise as she looked into the face of a familiar silver-haired masked man, but unlike normal he had his headband raised showing off his hidden eye.

((AN: Now I know some will not be happy about the team arrangements, but I thought about it and tried coming up with new teams and different scenarios but could not come up with a team that would be balanced and able to work in with the flow of the story. I wanted to have Sasuke and Naruto on the same team due to the bond the share would not be there if they were on other team, such leaving the drive that Sasuke gets would not have the rivalry with Naruto as he would not see the same from others to be better. And as such I put this team together as it also fits as an assault team whereas other combinations would not have been able to specialize. (Like Team 8 was tracking and capture, and Team 10 was Interrogation). Do not worry this will not follow cannon the whole way. I do have new ideas for different parts and added in new missions. I will do the Wave arc, but there will be changes and after that is when it will split more. I feel Wave too important for the character development of the team to remove.

Now with the Shadow clone Jutsu and Ex-quip, he can combine them but I thought he would be far to over powered if he could summon unlimited weapons due to there also only being one of each. Due to the jutsu splitting his chakra among the clones I would say that his magic would do the same. So therefore the stronger the sword/armor the less clones he can make. Cause the clones do appear with what the user has on, by doing this there will not be an army of Naruto's using the Heavens Wheel armor or Purgatory Armor(even if that would be amazing), ))
