WHEN THE DREAM BECOMES A NIGHTMARE
Just as the Doctor finished hugging Lucy, the TARDIS began to start emitting a high-pitched version of its dematerialization sound that Osgood instinctively realized was a message of some sort. She had no idea what it meant but the three Time Lords with her obviously did because their heads all instantly turned in unison towards the blue box in alarm.
"What does that mean? Is something wrong with the TARDIS?" Osgood asked as the Doctor raced back towards his ship with an anxious look on his face as if an entire legion of Cybermen were at his heels.
It was Lucy who answered her as she said in a disbelieving voice, "No, it usually only makes that sound if we're being summoned back home to Gallifrey. That's impossible though. They're still lost. I was the only one who ever found them and I left them where they were because I was afraid of what they might do if I helped bring them back again. The only one that I freed was Clara."
It seemed as if the other two Time Lords had decided to stay outside and wait for the Doctor to return Osgood quickly realized since neither one of them made a move to follow him inside the TARDIS. She couldn't help but wonder as she watched their nervous reactions if maybe they were both too afraid to confront whatever he might find out in there.
"That doesn't mean that they're still there. If anyone could find a way back home somehow it would be Rassilon. I bet Tyrant Boy pulled one of his little conjuring tricks that finally enabled him to bring Gallifrey back again even without the Doctor's help," Clara said in a worried voice.
"If they are back, does that mean that they're still going to destroy the universe?" Osgood asked.
"Not if I can help it. I'll take on Rassilon again if I have to first," Clara said defiantly.
"And I'll be right there next to you no matter what he does to us. Even being turned into a Weeping Angel would be better than standing by and doing nothing. And they called us renegades! What they were about to do at the end of the war was far worse than anything that I ever did. The most I ever did was try to reboot reality not completely wipe it all out," Lucy said in disgust.
Clara looked guilty as she said, "I, uh, I actually did threaten to wipe it all out . . . once or twice. I was just bluffing though. More or less."
"Let me guess. You wanted them to make you master of everything and threatened to destroy them all if they didn't, right?" Lucy said with an amused grin.
Clara looked embarrassed now as she said, "Yeah, sorry about that."
"It's alright, Clara. You don't have to apologize. Not to me anyway. I know that's way in the past now," Lucy said as she put her arm around her with a reassuring smile.
"I still can't picture you as ever being that bad, Clara. The person that I see now is nothing like the one that I've read about," Osgood said in disbelief even as she smiled at the relieved look that Clara gave Lucy in that moment.
"That's because she was always nice to you. You always did have a weakness for the Doctor's companions though didn't you? You never did try to seriously hurt them as far as I know. I always thought that was because you were afraid if you did that the Doctor would never forgive you since he had already grown so attached to them," Lucy said.
"He never would have either. You know how attached he gets to people. He still refused to let me go after centuries of trying to kill him," Clara said.
"He actually burnt up a sun just to say good bye to Rose Tyler once when she was trapped in another universe according to our records," Osgood agreed.
"Exactly. That was a bit different though, Inhaler Girl," Clara said with a knowing smile.
"Rose Tyler. Wasn't she the one that you told me about once? The one who he . . ." Lucy asked curiously.
"Yep, that's the one," Clara said with a brief chuckle.
"Is that why you picked me to marry? Was it because I was a blonde girl like her? Was that some sort of snub to the Doctor?" Lucy asked.
"No, it was never about that. I promise," Clara reassured her.
Then her face turned red and she smiled as she said, "I think I was just curious to see if I could finally find out what the Doctor saw in those human girls of his. I never expected to actually fall for one like he did. Maybe that's why I acted the way that I did towards you later. I could never admit to myself that I could actually care about a human. Not that that was ever any excuse. Nothing could ever excuse it."
Then she suddenly looked away from Lucy with shame and Osgood could immediately tell from the sickened look on her face that she was thinking of the way that she had treated her.
"Don't, Clara. Just don't. I honestly didn't mean to bring that up again. I really didn't. I've already forgiven you for that. I promise," Lucy quickly said in an apologetic voice.
"I'll never be able to forgive myself though. Ever. I'm sorry, Lucy. So sorry," Clara said in tears.
"I know," Lucy said in a gentle tone as she kissed her cheek and pulled her closer to her as they began to slowly move nearer and nearer to one another by the moment.
"What are you two still standing outside for and why are you always so emotional all of the time?" The Doctor suddenly said as he came back outside with a huge frown on his face.
Then he began to actually smile as he said, "They're never going to be able to even recognize you back home."
"You mean?" Clara asked with a quick smile as she and Lucy immediately pulled away from one another with uncomfortable looks on their faces that only endeared them to Osgood even more.
"Yes, that was Gallifrey. The High Council finally showed a brief moment of common sense and deposed Rassilon. He's been imprisoned back in the Dark Tower once more and there's someone far better in charge these days. I thought there might be since I could never see Rassilon agreeing to give me a new set of regenerations like that. An old friend of mine would have however. That was Romana back in the TARDIS. She contacted me and told me to come back home," The Doctor said in a voice filled with undisguised joy and relief.
"What about us?" Clara asked in a hesitant tone.
"I told her about how both of you have become completely different people after having been human, Clara. She knew that I would never lie about something like that so she seemed to believe me. She said . . ." The Doctor said and then hesitated.
"She said what?" Clara said as her face began to fill with worry.
"She said that she would look the other way and leave you alone as long as the two of you stayed out of trouble from now on," The Doctor said with a look that clearly told them that there was more that he was still holding back from them.
"There's a condition in there though somewhere isn't there, Old Man?" Clara prodded.
The Doctor nodded as he said, "She'll only do that if you agree never to go back to Gallifrey. If you do, she'll have no choice but to put you both on trial. The High Council would insist on it she said."
"That's fine by me. I never want to go back again anyway. There's nothing but bad memories for me there now after what happened in the Time War," Lucy said without hesitation.
Clara however looked somewhat sad as she said, "Well, I suppose that's not so bad. I have a life here on Earth now anyway so it's not like I would have ever went back to stay. I still would have liked to see my family again though at least once . . . if they would agree to see me."
"You still have a family there?" Osgood asked in surprise.
Clara nodded as she said with a brief but sad smile, "I have a daughter. She was the sweetest person that you'll ever meet believe it or not. I'm really glad that she turned out to be nothing like me even if it did mean that the differences between us later tore us apart. She broke off contact with me when I became a renegade not that I can blame her, and my father was still alive even though he was extremely old even for a Time Lord. I think. At least he was the last time that I was there anyway. That was right at the very start of the war though."
"He was still alive even in the last days of the war as far as I know and so was your daughter. Rassilon wasn't allowing anyone to die that he could potentially use on the front lines against the Daleks," The Doctor said.
"You mean they were . . . ?" Clara asked in a horrified voice.
"No because even Rassilon wouldn't send a sick old man or a confirmed pacifist like your daughter to fight. They would have been forcibly drafted if the Daleks had ever made it inside the Capitol though I'm sure," The Doctor said in a sad voice.
"What about you? Do you have anyone back on Gallifrey?" Osgood asked Lucy as she tried to change the topic as fast as she could.
"No, I have no family. My only family is the Coles and Clara," Lucy said with no trace of emotion in her voice whatsoever.
Even as Osgood noted with inner satisfaction that Clara gave Lucy a surprised but extremely pleased look she realized that there was definitely a story there somewhere. She didn't want to poke her nose into it any further however because she didn't feel as if it were her place.
Clara immediately changed the subject while putting a comforting hand on Lucy's shoulder as she said to the Doctor, "So how long do you plan on staying there until you come back for us, Mr. Grim?"
"I'm not going back," The Doctor said in a nonchalant voice.
All three women now looked at him in absolute astonishment as Clara said what they were all thinking at that moment, "Run that by me again, Sticky? You are the same Doctor who's been doing nothing but constantly emoting about how he can never go home again for your last four lives, right? You were beginning to make the sparkly vampires in those books look like amateurs."
"I said I'm not going back . . . not without the two of you with me," The Doctor said with the beginnings of a smug smile.
Lucy began to smile back at him now as she said, "You're playing chicken with them aren't you?"
"Playing chicken? You'd definitely been around the humans for far too long now, Lucy," The Doctor said with a frown.
"I don't understand. How is he playing chicken with them?" Osgood asked in confusion.
Clara grinned as she looked at the Doctor with undisguised affection while she explained, "It's quite simple really, Inhaler Girl. The High Council, because they're so full of themselves and always like to put on a big show for everyone, probably want to have some kind of a hero's welcome for the Doctor for saving Gallifrey. That's why Romana called him. Mr. Grim though is refusing to go unless they agree to fully pardon me and Lucy first. He's playing chicken with them in the hope that they'll blink first and do what he wants. I couldn't appreciate it more either, but I really think that you should just forget it and go, Doctor. You know you've been dying to for so long now."
"No," The Doctor said in a firm tone.
"Just do it, Doctor. If you don't, they might not allow you to come back either. You know how petty they are," Lucy warned.
"We'll see," The Doctor said with a self-assured look on his face.
A moment later the TARDIS made the same noise that it had before and the Doctor smirked as he said, "I hope you're wearing something better than that for your trip back home, Clara."
"What's wrong with what I have on? At least I didn't used to think that bow ties were the height of fashion and let's not even get started on that multi-color nightmare that you used to call a coat in your sixth incarnation. It always looked like a rainbow threw up on you," Clara pretended to protest as she smiled at him.
"What she means to say is . . . thank you, Doctor," Lucy said as she hugged the Doctor and instantly made him wince.
"Funny. I didn't get the memo where it said that you were talking for me from now on. When did that happen?" Clara said in an amused voice as she grinned at her.
"It must have gotten lost in the mail. Don't worry. I'll make sure that you get a copy. It's very important because it details exactly what you can and can't do from now on," Lucy joked.
"I thought I was the one who was supposed to have everyone obey me," Clara said as she pretended to protest.
"Not anymore," Lucy said with an evil smile.
The Doctor looked at them strangely and then looked to Osgood as he asked, "Am I missing something here? They're acting even stranger than usual."
Osgood laughed as she said, "I'll explain it to you later, Doctor. Don't worry. Right now you'd better answer that call though before they change their mind."
The Doctor nodded as he looked at Clara and Lucy oddly once more and then he quickly returned to the TARDIS. That was when Osgood's heart immediately fell as she noticed something that the two Time Ladies didn't.
Carmen Trefusis had already woken up and was now halfway down the street from them and running away as fast as she could!
"No, no, no!" Osgood shouted as she raced after her.
"Osgood, what . . . ?" Clara asked in confusion until she saw who Osgood was chasing after.
That was when Clara cursed in Gallifreyan as she said, "I am such an idiot!"
She immediately took off after the two women as fast as she could with Lucy fast on her heels. Clara instantly felt like kicking herself repeatedly as she realized what had just happened. They had all been so caught up in the shocking revelation of Gallifrey's survival that they had completely forgotten about Carmen. Now there was no telling what Carmen was about to do or who she might tell her secret to if they couldn't catch her in time.
She could only hope that her new life wasn't about to be completely wrecked just as it was on the verge of finally beginning.
When they were all gone, the Doctor finally stuck his head out of the TARDIS and looked around him in confusion as he said to himself, "I didn't mean for her to actually take that remark about her clothes seriously. I must work on my sense of humor from now on so that I make sure that it's obvious to people that I actually am joking. I never had this problem back when I was Sand Shoes. Rose always seemed to get all of my jokes. Donna must have too because she just kept slapping me."
That was when the TARDIS let out the same summoning noise as before which caused the Doctor to immediately groan and say, "She's never going to stop calling until I actually go there. I suppose I could pop in for just a quick visit in order to get what will no doubt be an embarrassing but much-deserved parade in my honor over with now that Clara and Lucy are finally getting that pardon. I'll make it up to Clara later. She shouldn't be too angry about it. I hope."
The Doctor then got back in the TARDIS and moments later the sound of its dematerialization could be heard by Clara and Lucy several feet away. Clara immediately looked back in surprise as she groaned out loud.
"Well, that's just wonderful. Mr. Clueless probably thinks that we're already onboard knowing him," Clara said to Lucy as they raced alongside each other while attempting to catch up to Carmen and Osgood.
"Don't worry. We'll catch up to them. I have a TARDIS too hidden somewhere in the middle of London. I finally remember that now that I've gotten my memories back again. The only problem will be getting to it. We're probably going to have to do a lot of walking to get there," Lucy said with a frown.
"Oh, joy. Remind me to kill the Old Man later, Lucy. Or can I not do that anymore now?" Clara asked with a mischievous smile.
"Usually you would be prohibited from killing anyone now under the new rules. I'll make an exception just this once though," Lucy said as she laughed at her.
"Thanks. I knew you had my back," Clara said with a chuckle.
Then the smile on both of their faces was instantly wiped away as they saw that Carmen was running straight towards Kate Stewart and a rapidly approaching army of UNIT soldiers. Clara realized now to her horror that Kate must have somehow figured out what had happened to Osgood and had come looking for her at Carmen's house.
"Do I have the worst luck in the universe or what?" Clara said as she watched this whole scene play out in disbelief.
Things only got worse moments later as Carmen screamed out at Kate at the top of her lungs, "Clara Oswald is the Master and I can prove it! I have a recording of her admitting to it!"
Then she pulled a cell phone out of her pocket that she eagerly waved in front of her as she continued to race towards Kate with a triumphant smile of victory.
Clara could instantly feel her hearts breaking as she realized that everything was over now. Carmen was only moments away from finally completely destroying her future, her life, and her rapidly healing relationship with the Doctor and Lucy all in one fell swoop. It was all over with now and there was nothing that she could do to stop it this time.
That was when Carmen suddenly screamed in agony as she was hit from behind by an enormous blast of energy and immediately fell unmoving to the ground. A second beam instantly destroyed the phone that was still in her hand to the accompaniment of some extremely wicked (and very familiar) sounding laughter.
Both Clara and Lucy's jaws dropped as they turned in the direction of that laughter and finally saw its source at last.
"Can you believe the lies coming out of that one's mouth? Clara Oswald is me? Really? Don't be ridiculous. She's not even using the correct name anyway. I don't know if anyone's told you but these days I go by Missy. Isn't that right, Clara?" A woman that looked exactly like Lucy's previous incarnation said with a wicked grin as she winked at Clara.
"Who is that? That can't be me. I'd definitely remember something like this. It must be the other Missy that I met before back when I was still the Rani. I never did know what happened to her," Lucy whispered to Clara in an alarmed voice.
"Now you tell me," Clara said with a sigh.
"What is happening?" Osgood said in a frightened voice as she looked to Clara and Lucy for answers.
"And here I thought I was having a bad day before," Clara said in a stunned voice.
"Oh, believe me, Soufflé Girl, you haven't seen anything yet. This party's only just getting started," Missy said as her already monstrous grin grew even wider now.
Meanwhile the Doctor was about to find that his own luck wasn't much better as the TARDIS finally materialized on Gallifrey. As soon as he stepped out of it, he was instantly surrounded by a group of Chancellery Guards with their stasers all trained directly on him.
"Oh, hello. I believe there's been some sort of mix-up. I was actually asked to come here by a friend of mine," The Doctor said even as his mind immediately set to work on figuring out what was going on.
Then he saw Romana heading towards him still looking like she had the day that he last saw her near the end of the Time War. He briefly smiled at her nervously as his eyes silently begged her to intervene.
"And there she is now. Tell them who I am, Romana. She'll straighten this out for you in no time now," The Doctor said confidently.
"Arrest him," Romana said in a cold voice.
The Doctor frowned as he said, "Why am I not surprised by that with the way that things are going lately? Whatever this is about I'm sure that I can explain, Romana."
Romana completely ignored him though as she said, "Take him to a holding cell until we can hold his trial, and then he will be quickly and efficiently executed."
"Okay, something is definitely wrong now. I may have irritated Romana on occasion but she's never wanted to have me executed before. So that suggests that she's under someone else's control. Either that or . . ." The Doctor said to himself as the guards started to take him away at gunpoint.
"The prisoner will remain silent!" One of the guards shouted.
"No, the prisoner will not. How else am I going to work this all out if I can't talk it out as I go? Oh, and while we're at it I'd really like to know what it is that I'm being accused of this time around," The Doctor complained.
The answer that he received chilled him to his very core as an inhuman voice said, "YOU ARE TO BE TRIED FOR ALL OF YOUR MANY CRIMES AGAINST THE DALEKS. THE SENTENCE WILL BE YOUR FINAL EXTERMINATION. YOU WILL BE EXTERMINATED!"
The Doctor now turned to see several Daleks behind Romana as she smiled at them eagerly.
Then his eyes widened in horror as he heard Romana and the other Time Lords join the Daleks as they all began to shout together, "EXTERMINATE HIM! EXTERMINATE HIM! EXTERMINATE HIM!"
The Doctor began wondering if he was going mad now as he watched this bizarre scene straight out of some kind of surreal nightmare begin to unfold before him. His brain told him that there was no way that this could really be happening but the evidence of it was right before him and completely incontrovertible.
The Daleks had conquered Gallifrey!
Next: Is it really true? Have the Daleks finally won their final victory against the Time Lords at last and will the Doctor soon follow them in defeat? Meanwhile what will happen to Clara, Lucy, and Osgood back on Earth while this is going on? Just what are Missy's plans for them and who exactly is she anyway? Have Clara and Lucy guessed her identity correctly or is there something far more sinister going on here than even they realize?
