Chapter 9
Grovyle stood stationary in front of his trainer, mulling the genius idea that his evil and sugar-pumped mind conjured for him to do. Truthfully nothing was wrong with the plan he conjured, it was much more realistic and feasible than some of the things the redhead trainer wanted him to do in the past, in fact. Perhaps he was feeling vindictive over his previous defeat? Grovyle found himself wondering about things even as his body moved on autopilot in order to dodge the projectiles thrown by Geodude.
"Grovyle, stick to the plan!" The voice of his trainer shook him out of his reverie. With a shake of his head, the Grass-type starter forced himself to focus on his opponent, least he was defeated and further upset his trainer. "Use Sword Dance, get in close and do it!"
Let it be known that bad things happen when Leo Hashiri was upset. It only take him to start going on a binge stress eating before everything went downhill towards the metaphorical abyss. So, with a nod of confirmation towards his trainer, Grovyle launched forwards towards his enemies, bluish aura enveloping his body as four intangible otherwordly swords spun and twirled around him, raising his attack power.
"Geodude, don't let him get to you! Use Eathquake, quick!" Roark distressed cry alerted Geodude of the impending danger. So, without wasting any moment, the Rock-type Pokemon pounded his fists into the ground, causing a large tremor to rock and shake the ground. Fissures and spiderweb cracks once again appeared on the ground, adding more to the pre-existing lines on the ground as the land continued to shake and vibrate.
Grovyle, however, was prepared. He jumped up towards the ceiling just seconds before Geodude's fist hit the ground, successfuly escaping the Ground-type move. As soon as the rocks and pebbles started trembling and rolling, Grovyle wasted no time to leap down and proceed with the plan. With a well placed and well timed Brick Break to the head, Grovyle had Geodude stunned and unable to break his hold.
Grovyle's thin yet muscular green arm held the stunned Geodude by his head, his legs poised as if he was ready to make a dash. The Wood Gecko pokemon dashed, spinning Geodude around with his arm before letting him go rolling towards the distant wall in a manner similar to that of a bowling ball.
"What in the world is that unknown move!?" Roark gaped, too stunned to do anything else.
"Woohoo! Bowling Power!" Leo whooped excitedly, twirling around in his spot.
The Bowling ball geodude slammed face first into the wall where a mysterious target like marking was painted in red, causing a cloud of dust and debris to explode from the probably decimated wall.
"SSTRIKEEEEE!" Leo cheered, once again changing his attire into that of a bowling player's traditional white tee tucked into a pair of black trousers without anyone's notice. Heck, he even got a fake moustache on him.
"Wutt!?" Danny spluttered as he watched Grovyle mercilessly threw the makeshift bowling ball into the wall, never minding the fact that said ball was actually alive. "Are you crazy!? He could crack his head!" He berated.
::As far as I'm concerned-:: Grovyle began, his tone heavy with indifference and barely hidden denial. ::It was just a bumpy, low quality bowling ball.::
Danny supressed the urge to unhinge his jaws at the level of reality denial the Grass-type Pokemon possessed. Thinking back, it must have been a coping mechanism he had to develop to deal with Leo's insanity on a daily basis. Without a second thought, his respect for the taciturn Pokemon went up the metaphorical roof.
'It must be hard to deal with him..' Danny thought, unknowingly wiping a stray tear of camaraderie from his eyes. 'I totally understand your hardship!'
Off in the arena, Grovyle sweatdropped and fought the urge to sock someone in the face. Ignoring the feeling of being misunderstood in his gut, Grovyle proceeded to focus back on the slowly recovering Geodude, who struggled to peel his face off of the wall. After some struggle which involves the use of a crowbar, Geodude managed to roll out of the face shaped indent on the wall.
::Ouch..:: He groaned. ::There's so many bricks..::
"Poor guy. He must have gotten internal bleeding on his head." Danny shook his head mournfully at Geodude who's still describing the beauty of the winged bricks.
"Grovyle, chance!" Leo roared heatedly, somehow having his head grow several times bigger than it actually is while sporting blazing fire for eyes and multiple rows of fangs as teeth. "BANTAIII!" He ordered.
"What the hell kinda language is that?" He wondered aloud, another sweatdrop trailing down the back of his head.
Unperturbed, Grovyle dashed forward towards the still recovering Pokemon and reared his hands back for a quick grab. Luckily, or unfortunately for some poeple, Geodude rolled to the side, evading the grabbing hands of Grovyle in favor to roll around aimlessly in his confusion.
"I never thought there will come a day that I thank arceus for confusion." Roark mused, playing with his glasses as he watched the Grass-type ferociously swiping his hands around in an attempt to catch Geodude only for said Pokemon to roll to the side of evad his grip by a hair's breath.
Confused Pokemon is surprisingly similar to drunken humans in that they have two categories they will fall into. One, is of course the sad and catatonic type. You know, the one that will bawl and bitch about their life problems before dumping their puke on your best clothes. The second is the violent type. The type that you met at the dead of the night, staggering around the street before poking someone's eye out with a pocket knife simply because they're breathing.
Geodude.. is of the second type.
::Stop swippin' at me, ye tree hugger!:: He growled deliriously before slamming his hands to the ground, causing the earth to erupt upwards into sharp edged spikes and spears.
::I do not hug trees.:: Grovyle corrected neutrally as he calmly dodged the erupting spikes. ::In fact, I do not hug. At all.:: He said, throwing a pointed look towards the hopeful face of his trainer, whose face immediately crumpled into a disappointed pout.
"He used to like my hugs when he was little." Leo grumbled.
::Don't remind me.:: Grovyle drawled with an epic eye roll.
Danny, feeling curious, released Zenith from his Pokeball. A questioning look from the canine and Danny decided to cut the chase and satisfy his curiosity. "Do you like hugs?" He asked.
He gave him his patented are you mad? look. ::Do it and you're dead to me.:: He replied without missing a beat. Satisfied, Danny nodded at his answer before focusing back to the battle, totally ignoring Leo who's sulking in one of the dark corners of the arena with a black aura of gloom surrounding him.
Meanwhile, off in the arena, the battle between Grovyle and Geodude continued. The latter was finally back to the right state of mind and was able to better use more of his attacks, successfully pushing back and even injuring the Grass type with a Brick Break to the face. Grovye himself wasn't idle and retaliated with his own Brick Break and the occasional Energy Ball.
"Alright, Geodude use Rollout!" Roark called out towards the Rock-type Pokemon.
::Aye!:: Geodude curled in on himself, rolling in place before lurching forward towards Grovyle, intent on running him over.
"Grovyle, use strategy BB!" Leo ordered, earning a nod and an almost soundless sigh from the Grass-type.
Danny sweatdroppped, yet another crazy move is going to be experimented on the poor unsuspecting Geodude. He may not be a devout believer of religions, but for this one time, he readied himself to clasp his hands and pray to whatever god exist to bless the poor Rock-type's soul.
Grovyle waited and waited until Geodude was within his range before, with lightning quick movement, craned his neck to the side to avoid getting hit in the face by Rollout. His hand moved, quick and precise, to grab Geodude before he got away before turning around and taking the classic pose of a baseball pitcher.
The sound of wood hitting ground gained Danny's and Zenith's interest and, with an absent comment that they'll regret whatever they see, both turned to the side to see that Leo had once again changed his attire to that of a baseball player, bat and trademark hat included. The cogs and gears worked in Danny's mind before her realized that BB stands for BaseBall -Leo as the hitter, Grovyle as the pitcher and Geodude, obviously, as the ball.
::-Haaa!:: Grovyle spun Geodude around so as to gain momentum before throwing it towards the expectant and eager Leo.
Danny watched, part impressed and part horrified, as the younger trainer swung his wooden bat and managed to hit the speeding ball of death, throwing it off to another wall, although this time, it wasn't as damaging as Grovyle's Bowling Power.
Leo began to run around the arena before declaring "I struck a Homerun!" proudly.
::Ooooh~:: Zenith breaathed out, eyeing the unconscious Geodude rolling around comically on the ground. ::That was creative.::
Danny, however, wasn't listening to him and instead clasped his hands together in a traditional praying pose and closed his eyes. "Arceus, or whoever the heck up there, bless the poor pebble rolling over in the arena with your kindness. Amen." He prayed.
::I'm pretty sure the word 'Heck' was banned from prayers.:: Zenith deadpanned at him, a sweatdrop running down the back of his head. He then shrugged, that wasn't his problem. ::Meh, whatever.::
Danny picked up his flag and raised Leo's to the air. "Winner, Leo and Grovyle!" He declared.
Leo whooped happily at his second victory while Grovyle simply stood off to the side, eyeing his trainer with amused golden eyes and a slight upturn on his lift to show that he was happy. Considering that it was Grovyle of all people, then it could be said that it was highly amusing for him. Roark, for his part, just smiled wryly at the mismatched duo before sighing exasperatedly and taking Geodude back to his Pokeball.
"Well, let's get ready for the last match." Roark said. Taking out the last of his Pokeball, Roark released his Ace, his strongest -Rampardos.
The large, impressive looking Dinosaur-like pokemon stood proud and tall on his hind legs and released a roar worthy to be recorded in Jurassic Park movies. The prehistoric Pokemon eyed grovyle with its large red eyes, inspecting and scrutinizing him before nodding his head in a satisfied manner.
Grovyle tensed his body. He was tired and more than a little sore in the leg, but he kept that to himself and got on his stance. The chance for victory was slim for him, what with his growing exhaustion gnawing at his sore legs and muscle, but he would at least tire the ancient Pokemon out for Kabuto to take on.
Yes. That was a good plan.
"The fight between Grovyle and Rampardos.." Danny, once again, brought down the two flags in his hands. "-BEGINS!"
...
...
Danny blinked confusedly as the expected sound of violence never reached his ears. Curiously, He raised his head only to see that both Pokemon was still standing rooted on their spot, not a twitch on their muscles, as they sized each other. Glowing crimson red eyes met cold emotionless golden for a long while before both reptilians, without any word, dashed towards one another, Zen Headbutt and Quick Attack already in place and ready to clash.
Suddenly, with a speed that only few could boast, Grovyle leaped from his charge to the air, going over the large Dinosaur-like Pokemon and saving himself from a battle that he would never win. None could charge as hard and devastating as a Rampardos and there was a reason why they're called the Ancient Wrecking Ball.
"Use Bullet Seed and shoot his back!" Leo ordered.
With his usual silent nod, Grovyle twisted in midair and let loose a salvo of Bullet Seed from his mouth which struck Rampardos right on his back, causing the giant grey Dinosaur-like Pokemon to roar in pain. In retaliation, Rampardos whipped his tail and smacked the airborne Grovyle down from the air and into the ground.
"Rampardos, quick! Use Ancient Power!" Roark ordered.
With a confirmative roar, Rampardos' eyes glowed an eerie glow. Rocks and boulders rose into the air, briefly hanging in the air as if suspended by hundreds of invisible hands before they zoomed to Grovyle's downed form. They moved so fast that they created a gust of wind as they passed -incidentally blowing Danny's popcorn.
"Grovyle, you gotta dodge now!" Leo shouted panickedly at the downed Grovyle, pointedly ignoring Danny's and Zenith's cry of anguish over the loss of their snack.
Unable to rise up to his feet fast enough to dodge, Grovyle opted to roll and tumble away to evade the rock projectiles coming his way. Rocks and boulders continued to rain down on the rolling Grass-type who somehow managed to dodge all of the incoming attacks.
Rampardos noticed that his attack was doing nothing towards the elusive Grovyle and resorted back to his classic charge forward battle style. The dome atop his head glowed a bright blue, a dead giveaway for Zen Headbutt, before he dashed forward, intent on crushing the Grass-type to a pulp. Grovyle quickly jumped back up to his feet and leapt away, dodging Rampardos' furious charge.
"Alright, Energy Ball and Razor Leaf!" Leo ordered, receiving a nod from the stoic lizard.
Grovyle quickly gathered neon green colored energy on the palm of his hand before compressing it into a basketball sized sphere of green energy which he quickly threw towards the charging Rampardos. Grovyle wasn't about to let the Dinosaur-like Pokemon to dodge, however, as he quickly spun the plume in his head, letting out dozens of sharp cressent-shaped green blades randomly towards Rampardos.
Rampardos' red eyes flashed challengingly at the threat presented to him, an eager smirk crossing his features. ::Something like this-:: He gritted as he quickened his pace towards the incoming attacks. ::-ISN'T ENOUGH TO STOP ME!:: He roared as he sudden;y used both of his legs to perform an impossibly high leap, completely jumping over the Razor Leaves and Energy Ball.
"Hit him with Zen Headbutt, Rampardos!" Roark ordered.
"Get away from there Grovyle!" Leo cried out panickedly.
Rampardos twisted in the air with suprising flexibility, positioning his glowing blue dome down to pulverize anything below him. Like a blazing blue meteorite, Rampardos' Zen Heabutt impacted to the ground which immediately erupted into a gigantic mushroom cloud of dust and try as he might, the blast was too wide for Grovyle to completely dodge from.
"Waaaah~" Danny cried out, feeling the shockwave of the blast blowing him away. To counter this, Danny immediately latched himself to Zenith who was trying hard to stay on his spot.
::You're heavy! Stop holding on me!:: He shouted before his legs gave up and they both got blown away. ::Aaaah!:: He rolled away to the distant corner in a manner not too different from that of a discarded volleyball.
The shockwave disappeared seconds later and what was left was merely a settling mushroom cloud of debris and dust. It would probably take a few minute for a cloud that size to settle down, but apparently, Rampardos was of a different mind and decided that he wanted to get on with the fight and released a roar that blew away most of the dust, clearing the air and giving back their sight.
Grovyle was on his knees, panting and generally looking like he had seen better days. His left leg was blue and bruised while his left arm was dangling limply by his side, his elbow bent to the wrong angle. The green gecko was determined to not give up and immediately stood back up to his feet, though from the grimace on his face, it was quite painful to do so.
::You're defeated.:: Rampardos stated as he shook his head off the slight ringing from Zen-headbutt-ing the earth. ::Give up. You're in no condition to fight.:: He ordered.
Getting no answer from his foe, Rampardos sighed before calmly walked over to the struggling Grass-type, turned around and slapped his tail at Grovyle, sending him down to the ground where he immediately fainted and fall to blissful unconsciousness.
"He's one damn tenacious fighter." Danny commented.
::More like grimly determined.:: Zenith chirped in, adding his own penny to the conversation. ::If it was me, I'd probably be-::
"-Rolling and tumbling around like a discarded volleyball." Danny finished with a grin, earning an indignant roar from the shell-covered Dragon type. Ignoring the fumming Dragon-type below him, Danny dutifully raised his flags and declared Rampardos' victory.
Leo sighed before taking Grovyle's Pokeball and absorbed the unconscious Grass-type back, smilling gratefully at the red and white sphere in his grasp as he muttered a soft thanks to the Pokemon within. Pocketing back the ball, Leo pulled out a new one and threw it into the air. "C'mon out, Kabuto!" He called out as the fossil Pokemon appeared on the field.
Kabuto raised its face, red eyes glowing as he stared at the equally crimson eyes of Rampardos. He blinked twice before setting himself back down and quietly crawling back towards Leo, hiding between his legs.
"Pfftt." Danny snorted.
"Oi. What are you doing?" Leo sent deadpan stare at the little horse-shoe crab hiding between his legs. Unimpressed was an understatement. "C'mon, lil' champ, show him what you're made of!" Leo encouraged, jumping to the side so as to expose the hiding Pokemon.
It raised its face and once again blinked its glowing red eyes at its trainer. Kabuto once again set himself down before crawling back to his spot behind the redhead's legs.
Leo sweatdropped at the Fossil Pokemon's antic before a metaphorical light bulb blinked on inside his head. Giving a mischievous grin, Leo picked Kabuto up from his leg and whispered something to him before the small Pokemon eagerly leapt from his hands and into the field, all trace of hesitation gone.
"How did that happen?" Danny found himself wondering if Leo had the gift of silver tongue. He seems to have a way with words. "Ah, well. Whatever." He shook his head, no longer caring about the impossibility for the sake of his sanity.
Danny raised both of his flags. "The final between Rampardos and Kabuto begins!" He declared as he brought down his flags.
"Attack, Rampardos! Pursuit and follow it with Assurance!" Roark wasted no time in barking his order, and Rampardos was too eager to comply, despite the small stature of his foe.
With a mighty roar, the large dinosaur charged forward, small quakes shaking the ground with each steps he made. Wisps of dark aura appeared around the charging Rampardos, bolstering his speed as Pursuit take its intended effect. Following that, the dome on his head glowed a light purple, ready to deal damage to the smaller Pokemon with Assurance.
"Quick, use Bubble Beam!" Leo ordered hastily.
Kabuto raised its face and let loose a stream of blue glowing bubbles. It's just that-
"Up! UP! Kabuto, aim higher!" Leo screamed panickedly.
-Kabuto can't really aim that high to hit the much larger sized Rampardos. He's small after all.
"Aaaah! He can't aim high at all!" Leo screamed in despair. "Noooo!" He fell to one knee and started to cry a waterfall of anime tears as he pounded the ground in self-loathing.
Due to some unexpected occurences and unaccounted variable, or something like that, the majorly destroyed and crushed ground was easily affected by the Bubblebeam that Kabuto released, quickly turning the surrounding soil into puddles of slippery and very sticky mud. Shocked and never expecting such a thing to happen, Rampardos slipped mid charge and tumbled down in a heap, falling face first into the ground.
::Miracle is true!:: Zenith said in an awestruck and slightly shocked tone, as if he just saw a Catterpie that could defeat an Aggron.
"This kinda reminds me of Goliath vs David." Danny muttered, equally speechless of the spectacle he just witnessed.
::Who's David? Is he a Catterpie?:: Zenith asked bewilderedly.
"You can say so, I guess.." Danny nodded absently.
David's and Catterpie's relation aside, Danny and Zenith turned back to watch the proceeding battle. Rampardos, still on the ground, was having difficulty to rise back up to his feet while Kabuto slowly, almost hesitantly made his way over to the downed Dinosaur. It would be amusing to watch the smaller Pokemon hesitantly making his way to the larger one if it wasn't so slow and grating on their patience.
"You know what? Just shoot him with Bubblebeam and be done with it." Leo ordered with an exasperated tone.
Kabuto obeyed and released a stream of blue bubbles from his mouth which exploded on Rampardos' face. Despite the hilarity of the move, Danny has to admit that it does look painful when they pop and explode.
"Rampardos, Scary Face and Ancient Power!" Roark ordered in retaliation.
Rampardos happily complied and let his mouth stretch into a cruel and monstrously evil looking smirk. Red eyes glowing and an evil smirk in place, the dinosaur was the very picture of terror and to the small Kabuto, it was too horrifying to see in such a close distance and so, Faster than it was possible for something so small, Kabuto made his way back and retreated.
Rocks started to glow and float up into the air before shooting off towards the retreating Kabuto, pushing him to go faster to dodge the earthen missiles. Its little legs, saddly, was unable to support him in speed department, causing him to get thrown away due to some of the missiles landing too close for comfort. The only positive thing to come out of this was the fact that he was blasted away from the rock missiles and sustained no injuries.
"That was incredible luck." Danny chirped.
::Luck.:: Zenith agreed from his spot beside his trainer.
"Luck, indeed." Roark nodded as well.
"Give him a Mud Shot now, Kabuto!" Unperturbed, Leo barked his order, earning a nod from the Shellfish Pokemon.
With a cry of his name, Kabuto spat out several consecutive shots of mud balls at the immobile Rampardos, once again heating him clean on the face. With a roar of pain and annoyance -mostly annoyance, Rampardos started to force himself up to his legs, using his claws to prevent him from slipping and falling back into the mud puddle.
"Oh no you don't!" Leo cried out. "Kabuto, shoot his legs with Bubblebeams!" Once again, Kabuto took aime towards Rampardos' shaky legs and released a stream of luminescent blue bubbles from its mouth.
Now that he was prepared, Roark knew what to do and doesn't hesitate to give the order. "Rampardos, use Flamethrower on the Bubblebeam!" He ordered.
With an eager roar, Rampardos breathed out a pillar of fire from its mouth, intercepting and stopping the Bubblebeams to reach his shaky legs. Quickly so as not to lose his chance, Rampardos leaped away from the mud puddle and onto dry soil, effectively neutralizing his disadvantage.
"Aww damn!" Leo cursed.
"Rampardos, charge him now!" Roark cried out.
Rampardos wasted no time to do as he was told and charged straight towards the Shellfish Pokemon, head blazing with the bluish glow of Zen Headbutt.
"Wait for it.." Leo murmured as he stared at the impending doom that was Rampardos' charging form. "Wair for it.." Rampardos passed into a formation of rocks that loosely encircled him. "Now! Use Ancient Power, Kabuto!"
Kabuto's eyes glowed and the boulders and rocks floated up before turning into missiles towards their target. Caught off guard, Rampardos was unable to defend himself from getting torpedo-ed by the rock missiles, getting himself pummeled in the process before buried by a veritable mountain of rocks and boulders.
"Is he finished?" Leo wondered aloud, eyeing the mountain of rock in front of him.
"1.." Danny counted.
No movement.
"2... 3..."
Still no movement.
"4... 5..."
A small pebble rolled down from the top of the pile of rocks but otherwise, there was still no movement to be seen.
"6... 7... 8..."
A small twitch, missed by everyone but Zenith who silently took a cautious step back.
"9... 10."
All was silent when the final count flowed out of Danny's mouth. A beaming smile made its way to Leo's face as he prepared to jump and whoop for his victory before suddenly, the mountain of boulders exploded outwards in a violent burst, revealing the bruised, wounded, angry and still very much conscious Rampardos preparing to restart and finish his charge.
The smile immediately fell and the whoop of joy turned into a shrill scream of shock and panic.
His charge was, unfortunately, stopped as quickly as it started by one very shocked Kabuto. Apparently, the little thing was very jumpy and jittery and was very prone to violence when surprised. It came as no shock when the rocks started to once again glow and torpedo-ed themselves towards the charging Dinosaur, once again stopping himand burying him under a pile of rocks.
Not interested in another bout of counting, Danny simply kept silent and waited to see if the dinosaur is going to stand up anymore. Not seeing anymore sign of movement, Danny raised his flags and brought it down, signalling the end of the match. "The winner: Leo and Kabuto!"
"Victory goes to Challenger, Leo Hashiri!" Danny declared.
"Yess!" Leo whooped, running over to the arena and picked up the Shellfish Pokemon before twirling around in celebration. "We won! We did it!"
::That was slightly anti-climactic.:: Zenith commented with a flat tone in his voice, eyeing the pile of rock with an unimpressed stare. ::I was expecting a lot of explosions to occur since Grovyle is participating.:: He sighed in lamentation.
Roark walked over with a his usual polite smile. "Congratulations, it was a good and slightly comedic battle." The cordovan haired Gym Leader grinned at the red-haired trainer, earning a large, positively beaming, megawatt grin in return. "As a price of your victory, I present to you: The Coal badge."
With an expression of utter giddyness, which translates to unblinking, twinkling golden eyes and an eager smile, Leo tokk the badge into hi own hand, holding it with the utmost care. "Woah.. Thanks, Roark!" He grinned up at the older teen.
"Sure, kid." Roark smiled back. "A bit of advice, don't fight with a Pokemon that is clearly uncooperative."
Leo just nodded before, as usual, dragged Danny out into the streets.
