Chapter Two; Martha Jones

The next six months flew by rather quickly. Eventually The Doctor started potty training Peter while Jane started teething and learning how to crawl. Shortly afterwards she got her first tooth and learned how to stand and to walk by holding onto something. A little before she turned one she learned how to say her first word (Muma) and let either one of her parents know when she wanted a bottle.

"Ba Ba!" she cried while she sat and waited inside her playpen as her parents started to set up for her brother's third birthday party.

"I thought that you said that you were ready to ween her." The Doctor said.

"I did, but I don't think she's ready yet. Just like Peter isn't quite ready to give up his dummies yet." She explained.

"Speaking of that where is Peter? I thought that Jackie was upstairs getting him up from his nap." The Doctor said when suddenly a few moments later Jackie arrived carrying him inside her arms.

"Sorry it took us so long but I had to change his nappy." She began. "How is he coming along with his potty training anyway?" she asked them while she gently placed him down on the ground and pulled out his shirt that had Reptar the dinosaur on it.

"He's getting there." Rose began. "I think boys usually take more time than girls." She said.

"Well take a look at it this way, you'll have a much easier time then when it comes to potty training Jane." Her mother told her.

"Yeah, I just got to get him trained before nursery school starts. It's one of the best schools in the area." She said when suddenly Jane started to cry.

"Ba, Ba?" she questioned.

"Hold on Jane Mummy's coming!" Rose called. "Peter stay here with Daddy and Grandma, I've got to give your baby sister her bottle." She said before she ran away and Peter sat down inside the dirt and started playing with his shiny red fire engine.

"Vroom! Vroom!" he cried as he pushed it back and forth.

"Peter please get up darling you don't want to get all dirty before your party." She told him.

"Oh c'mon Jackie he's just a little kid and little kids get dirty all the time it's a fact of life. Well boys do anyway." The Doctor told her.

"What? Are you saying that since Jane's a girl she can't get dirty?" she questioned him. "Because that's just a serious vicious stereotype." She spat.

"Look I never said that boys can get dirty and girls can't. All I said was that girls generally don't like to that's all." He explained. "And if Jane is anything like her mother then she won't be any different than the rest of them." He said as he finished setting the table when suddenly Shadow ran up to him and started to bark.

"What is it Shadow? Do you want to play boy?" he asked him as the dog bent down playfully and started to wag his tail while barking eagerly. "Alright then, let's go play. Peter stay here with your grandmother." He said as Peter looked up and watched while his father took Shadow out into the yard to play Frisbee with him.

Just then Rose carried Jane over to the table with her bottle and sat her down on her lap. "Hey Peter what are you doing?" she asked him.

"Playing with my firetwuck." He answered while Jane continued to suck on her bottle. "Mummy, why do I have to go to school?" he asked her.

"You have to go to school so that you can get smart and learn things." She answered.

"Why?" he asked her as he continued to push his firetruck back and forth.

"So that you'll be a smart boy and a smart man someday when you grow up." She answered.

"I can count to ten." He began as he started to count. "One,.. two,.. three,.." he counted when he suddenly looked up and saw Jack and Sarah coming towards him carrying some food and presents. "Uncle Jack!" he cried excitedly. "Aunt Sawa!" he exclaimed before he stood up and rushed over to them making his shoes light up as they hit the ground.

"Hey Peter," Jack began before he picked him up. "happy birthday." He told him. "How old are you now? Twenty-one, Twenty-two?" he questioned him teasingly as Peter giggled and held up three fingers in response.

"No, I'm thwee years old." He answered.

"Hmm, three years old huh? Well in that case your aunt Sarah and I have a pretty big job for you if you think that you can handle it." Jack told him.

"What is it?" Peter asked.

"Well you see we're getting married which means that we're going to have a wedding." He answered.

"What's a wedding?" Peter asked him.

"Well it's when two people like your mummy and daddy love each other very much and so they decide to make promises that they will stay together forever and take care of each other. Then they have this big ceremony with all of their family and friends." He explained.

"What's that?" Peter asked him.

"Where everybody gets together to watch us say our promises to each other and to take part in it. That's where you and your sister come in. She's going to be the flower girl which means that she'll be throwing flowers onto the aisle and you're going to be the ring bearer which means that you'll walk down the aisle and carry our wedding rings to us. Then there will be this big party later with a bunch of food and dancing." He explained.

"Will there be cake and ice cweem?" he asked him as Jack nodded and grinned at him.

"Yep, there will be tons of cake and ice cweem." He told him with a chuckle before kissing his cheek and setting him back down on the ground with a pat on his bottom. "Alright now you run along and play now." He said as he watched him run away.

"Oh my God he's so adorable the way he talks." Sarah said.

"Yeah I know, he hasn't quite mastered his R sound yet." Jack said.

"The Doctor and Rose are so lucky. They have two beautiful happy and healthy children. I can't wait until we have kids of our own someday. You're going to make such a great father." Sarah told him before they exchanged grins and a kiss on the lips. After everyone else had arrived a new girl that Mickey had never seen before walked over to him.

She had black skin like him and he found her very attractive. He walked over to the picnic table where Rose was busy changing Jane's diaper. "That girl over there," he muttered inside a whisper. "who is she?" he asked her.

"Oh that's one of our new neighbors. She just moved into the apartment. Her name is Martha Jones and The Doctor and I thought that it would be a wonderful an idea to invite her to the party so we could get to know her more." She answered as she finished changing Jane and then handed her over to him. "Can you watch her for a second? I've got to make sure that Peter's hands are washed before we eat. He's been playing in the dirt ever since he woke up from his nap." She told him.

"Uh yeah, sure." Mickey agreed.

"Alright Jane Mummy will be right back. Be a good girl for Uncle Mickey." He told her before she walked away.

That's when suddenly Martha looked over and smiled at Mickey before she sat down next to him. "What a beautiful little girl." She began. "Is she yours?" she asked him.

"No she's not actually she's my sister's. Well actually biologically she's not but we're really close friends so I look to her like a sister." He explained.

"So then she's like your niece." Martha said as she looked down at Jane who smiled back up at her.

"Pretty much." He answered.

"What's her name?" Martha asked him.

"Jane." He answered.

"Oh I love that name it's so pretty and one of my favorites. Hullo Jane, I'm Martha." She said.

"Yeah, I know." Mickey began with a grin before he shook his head and laughed. "I mean, I'm Mickey Smith." He said.

"Well it's really nice to meet you both. See you around then." She told them before she walked away.

"Yeah, see ya." Mickey said while he watched her go and just then The Doctor walked over to the table while Shadow relieved himself in the bushes.

"I see you met Martha." He said as casually glanced into her direction.

"Yeah we just met a few minutes ago actually." He told him. "Doctor, can I ask you something?" he questioned.

"Sure, what's up?" he questioned him back.

"What does love feel like? I mean when did you know that Rose was the right girl for you?" he asked him.

"Back when I was still wearing a leather jacket." He said as he picked Jane up and hoisted her into his arms. "Believe me Mickey, love is the most powerful and extraordinary thing in the universe. When you find the right one, you'll know." He told him when suddenly Jane started to fuss. "Alright c'mon n-a-p, let's go." He told her before he kissed the top of her head and began to carry her away.
