Chapter Four; The Sky People

The Doctor quietly crept inside the children's bedroom. Jane was fast asleep inside her crib while her brother was only half asleep inside his bed and woke very easily at the sight of his father. "Daddy!" he cried excitedly while The Doctor simply just grinned at him.

"Shh,. I don't want to wake up your sister." He whispered while putting a finger to his lips. "I just wanted to check up on you and see how you were doing. Your uncle Mickey told me all about your new haircut and I wanted to see it." He explained.

"Do you like it?" Peter asked him while he did his very best to hold inside his laughter.

"Yes, I do like it. I think you did a very good job. Now you should probably go back to sleep it's very late and you've got nursery school tomorrow." He told him.

"All wight, goodnight Daddy." He told him as he closed his eyes while his father bent down and kissed his forehead.

"Goodnight." He whispered before he quietly walked over to Jane's crib and peered down at her with a warm smile before also giving her a kiss goodnight and then leaving the room quietly shutting the door behind him. "The kids are both asleep and sleeping like angels." He told his wife as he bumped into her inside the hallway.

"That's great, are you ready for bed?" she asked him.

"Yes but I'm not ready to go to sleep." He answered as he gave her a sly grin while placing his arms around her neck and giving her a deep and passionate kiss in which she returned.

….

The day of Jack's and Sarah's wedding had arrived. Jane had just turned two while Peter was almost four. "The children are growing up so fast that it makes me wonder if I want to try and have another one." Rose said while she started getting dressed for the big day.

"It would sort of be nice to have another baby around." The Doctor admitted before they finished getting dressed and walked into the living room where Peter was busy building a block tower and Jane was busy giving a bottle to her pretend baby doll. "Alright, are you guys ready for breakfast?" he asked them but when neither one of them responded the Doctor give out a sharp whistle that caused Shadow to stand up and accidentally bump into Peter's tower.

"Hey!" he yelled angrily.

"Oh peanut, I'm sorry." His father began. "But you know that you can always build another one." He told him.

"But I already did! Jane knocked down the first one!" he snapped.

"No I didn't!" she yelled back.

"You did too!" he cried.

"Now that's enough! Both of you!" their mother snapped at them angrily.

"Well she started it!" Peter yelled as he pointed at his sister who pointed back at him.

"No you did!" she shouted back while their parents just stopped to turn and look at each other.

"Why were we talking about having another baby again?" The Doctor asked. "Alright guys that's it, your mother is going to start making breakfast and if you don't stop arguing with each other then you're both going to have to go in the corner." He told them. "Understand?" he questioned them.

"Yes Daddy." Peter answered with a heavy sad sigh while Jane remained silent.

"Jane, do you understand what Daddy is telling you?" he asked her as she took a deep breath.

"Yes Daddy." She answered in a small and reluctant voice.

"Good, now you guys can continue to play for a few more minutes as long as you're not fighting." He told them.

"Shadow! Breakfast!" Rose called as she filled his bowl in which the dog raced into the kitchen while Peter started to rebuild his tower.

"Daddy, can I ask you a question?" he began.

"Sure you can, what is it?" his father asked him back in response.

"What happens when we die?" he questioned.

"Well I dunno, what made you ask such a thing?"

"Jane said that everybody has to die someday."

"Well yeah, she's right but how_" The Doctor began.

"She said that Mummy and Grandma are going to die." Peter responded as he looked up at his father who looked back at him and then stared at his daughter blankly.

"Well yes, but that probably isn't until a long time from now. Hey Princess, how do you know all of this stuff? I mean, who told you?" he asked her.

"They did." She answered while she continued to feed her baby doll.

"Who did honey?" he asked her back.

"The sky people." She responded without turning to look up at him as he and Rose exchanged nervous and worried glances.

….

"So let me get this straight," Mickey began later on that day after they had arrived inside the church parking lot. "your two year old daughter told you that you and your mother were going to die?" he questioned her with disbelief.

"No she told Peter and he told us. What do you think?" she asked him.

"I think you're crazy." He told her.

"Mickey!" she exclaimed. "This is serious! Jane isn't even in nursery school yet and already she's saying things like some imaginary sky people told her that my mum and I were going to die. Don't you find that the slightest bit disturbing?" she asked him.

"Well yes, but it would be even more disturbing that you would believe somebody who is still in diapers." He answered. "Now do me a favor and don't mention this in front of anyone else. Especially Martha." He told her.

"Why? Do you like her?" Rose asked her teasingly.

"Oh shut up, she's just a friend." He answered as they walked inside the church together.

"It seems that she's a little bit friendlier than that." Rose said while she playfully elbowed him inside the stomach.

"Doctor, please tell your wife to leave me alone." Mickey pleaded.

"Alright Rose, do you need to go in the corner?" The Doctor teased.

"Yeah right." She answered. "Listen, I just need to get a little fresh air for a moment." She said before she walked back outside and sat on top of the bottom step.

"What's the matter with Rose?" Donna began. "Is she alright?" she asked.

"Yeah, I think she'll be fine. I'll go talk to her just in case though." The Doctor said as stepped outside and climbed downstairs to join her. "Are you alright?" he asked as he sat down beside her.

"Yeah, I think so." She answered while holding her head up inside her hands. "It's just that I can't help but wonder if Peter was really the one who told Jane all of that stuff. I mean we both know that he's going through a dishonest phase right now and Jane is still so little that she doesn't understand the difference between what is real and make-believe." She explained as he put his arms around her and pulled her inside his chest.

"I wouldn't worry about it too much right now. After all we can't really punish him for something that we didn't hear him say with our own ears. Besides, we don't want to ruin Jack's and Sarah's special day now do we?" he questioned her as he rubbed her back soothingly and kissed her forehead.

"No, of course we don't." she answered with a grin.

"C'mon let's go then and find the kids." He told her as he kissed the top of her head before helping her to her feet and then the two of them climbed back upstairs and walked back inside the church.
