Chapter Seven; The Unexpected Visitor
Once everyone was gathered together at the table, The Doctor stood up and banged his spoon upon his glass while he faced the rest of the wedding party. "May I have your attention please he questioned as everybody stopped talking and looked up at him. "As best man of this wedding I would just like to say that I feel like a very lucky guy right now. "I've got a beautiful wife, two beautiful children, a great dog, and the greatest friends in the universe. I can't believe I've been so blessed." He began as he turned to look over at Jack and Sarah.
"Jack, and miss Sarah Jane, you guys are so lucky that you've found each other because you're perfect for each other. And well I dunno whether or not if there's a God, but if there is, I hope that He blesses you with a family as wonderful as mine.
And I'm not just talking about my wife and children, you're fantastic, and I love you very much, but I'm talking about everyone here because each and every one of you is very special to me and I consider you a lot like family. Jack and Sarah, I love you both a ton and I wish you good luck with your marriage."
He began as the two of them smiled at him while he raised his wineglass into the air. "To the newlyweds, Jack and Sarah Harkness." He said as everyone echoed him and clinked their glasses together while they toasted them. After supper was over Jack and Sarah cut the cake together before they enjoyed their first dance together as husband and wife. Afterwards all the single ladies (including Jane) were called out onto the dance floor for the throwing of the bouquet in which Donna ended up catching it in the end and Mickey caught the garter.
Then they all had fun dancing to the Juicy wiggle and Uptown funk and classic dances like the Macarena and the electric slide. Even though The Doctor wasn't very good with the fast dances he loved the slower ones where he could just hold his wife inside his arms and dance with her. When it was finally time to go home Peter and Jane were already asleep and their parents had to carry them back to the limo. That night they all slept better than they had in years.
The next morning after Rose woke up and took Shadow outside to do his business she saw a stray orange and black calico cat strolling up to her. She had splotches of orange and black everywhere except her legs were purely black and she had an orange tail (with a little white tip) and white paws. "Hullo kitty, where'd you come from?" she questioned when suddenly Shadow stop reliving himself and slowly placed his leg back down on the ground while he started at the cat.
"Shadow,.." Rose warned as she gave a little yank at the leash. "be nice." She told him as she bent down and called the cat over to her. The cat immediately started to purr and rub against her hand. "Aww, you're so sweet." She said. "I wonder who you belong to." She wondered aloud. "I always wanted a cat but The Doctor wouldn't allow it. No offense or anything but he doesn't really like cats." He told it as she finally stopped purring and rubbing against her as if she understood and started washing her face.
"Although I don't think he would mind if we kept you temporarily until we found your owner. I mean just because he isn't a cat person doesn't mean he's heartless." She told her. "C'mon, it would be a real joy to have you around." She said happily. "And that's what I'm going to call you until I find out your real name." she said. "C'mon Shadow, c'mon Joy." She told them as she patted her pant leg and led Shadow towards the front door while Joy trailed along behind them.
When she had made it back to the apartment the kids were already sitting down and having their breakfast. "Good morning guys I have a surprise for you." Rose told them as she removed Shadow's leash from his collar and hoisted Joy up inside her arms.
"Kitty!" Jane exclaimed excitedly.
"We got a cat?" Peter questioned her with disbelief.
"No honey she isn't really ours, she's lost." She explained.
"Poor kitty," Jane began. "what's her name?" she asked.
"Joy." Rose answered her.
"Hullo Joy. My name's Jane and this is my brother Peter and our doggie Shadow." She explained. "You can sleep in my bed." She said.
"Well, we'll see about that. Where's your father? I have to find just the right way to tell him." Rose began.
"Tell me what?" The Doctor questioned when suddenly he came out of the bathroom and walked into the hallway. "Oh," he began with a look of disgust. "it's a cat." He said. "Can somebody please tell me what a cat's doing here?" he asked.
"She's lost. Her name is Joy and she's sleeping in my bed." Jane told him as Rose sighed and took a deep breath.
"I found her when I took Shadow out and I just couldn't leave her there." She explained.
"So you decided to bring her back with you then?" The Doctor questioned.
"Please Doctor, can't she stay just for a little while until we find her owners?" Rose pleaded.
"Yeah, can she Daddy?" Jane questioned him.
"Well, what does Shadow think about all this?" he asked when he suddenly looked down and saw Joy rubbing up against the dog continuing to purr while he started to sniff her and gave her a little lick as he wagged his tail.
"There, you see, they like each other." Rose said. "Now can she stay?" she asked as she cocked her head to one side and softened her eyes.
"Stop it, you know I hate it when you look at me like that with that innocent look of yours." He told her.
"I know." She answered with a grin. "So did it work?" she asked him.
"Oh,.. alright the little fluff ball can stay. Just as long as you promise to find out where she belongs and to take her back where she came from." He grouched.
"Oh c'mon Doctor give her a chance, you might learn to like her." Rose said.
"Well, maybe,.. just as long as you're the one who's going to be changing her litterbox." He said as he turned to look down at Shadow who rolled over onto his side and thumped his tail on the floor while Rose went into the kitchen to open up a can of tuna. "What? Are you trying to tell me that you want some attention?" he asked him as he squatted down.
"Don't give me that look with those innocent old brown eyes of yours, you're as bad as Rose." He told him as Shadow blinked up at him and continued to wag his tail. "Oh alright, I give up." He said as he grinned and started to rub his belly. A few moments later he gave it a pat and stood back up.
"Alright, here you go." Rose began as she sat the plate of tuna down in front of the cat who happily trotted over to it. "Although I'm not really sure why I'm giving you this when you're fat enough as it is already." She said when suddenly the doorbell rang causing Shadow to bark and leap back up onto his feet.
"Stop it! Be quiet!" The Doctor told him while Joy just continued to enjoy her breakfast unfazed by the noise at all. The Doctor smiled as he answered the door. "Ah Jack, Sarah Jane, Hullo!" he greeted excitedly. "I thought you'd be on your honeymoon by now." He said as Shadow finally stopped barking and walked over to them wagging his tail.
"We were just about to leave but we'd figure that we'd drop by to say goodbye." Jack explained as Shadow jumped up on him. "Ah, hullo there Shadow." He told him with a grin as he scratched him behind the ears before he jumped back down.
"That's not a good idea to reward him like that. We're trying to get him to stop jumping up on people." The Doctor told him.
"It's alright he's down now, he just wanted to say hi." Jack said when suddenly Joy finished her meal and walked out of the kitchen. "Well who's this? I don't believe we met." He said.
"Her name is Joy, she's staying with us." Jane told him excitedly.
"Oh is that so? I didn't know that you were planning on getting a cat." Jack said.
"That's because we weren't." The Doctor told him.
"She's really pretty." Sarah said as she bent down and the cat started strolling over to her. "I just love her name and she's got beautiful blue eyes." She said as she stuck out her hand and the cat started rubbing up against it.
"You know Doctor, I dunno much about cats but she looks awful big. Are you sure she's not pregnant?" Jack questioned.
"What does that mean?" Jane asked with uncertainty as she scrunched up her face in confusion.
"Well I think it means that she's going to have a baby." Peter said. "Is that right Mummy?" he asked as he looked up at her and she smiled and nodded.
"Yes honey it is." She answered.
"Oh great that's all we need is a bunch of kittens running around here." The Doctor said sarcastically. "As if we weren't already full enough as it is." He said.
"Well you know, we could always add one more." Rose said as she smiled and winked at him.
"What?" he questioned. "You're not saying_" he began as she smiled and nodded again. "Oh darling, since when!?" he cried excitedly as he embraced her tightly before placing a passionate kiss on her lips.
"Since a few days ago." She answered.
"What's going on?" Jane asked them before Rose bent down to her level.
"Well Joy isn't the only one who's pregnant." She began. "Mummy's going to have a baby, you're going to be a big sister isn't that exciting?" she questioned her.
"Alright!" she exclaimed excitedly as The Doctor grinned down at her before Rose stood back up again and placed her arms around his neck before they shared another deep and passionate kiss.
