Chapter Eleven; A Tragic Event.

The Doctor softly knocked on the door before he and the others quietly entered the room. Peter and Jane stopped dead in their tracks but Rose just simply smiled at them. "It's alright? Do you want to come and see your new sister?" she questioned them as the baby started to coo.

"Go ahead guys it's alright." The Doctor whispered softly when neither of them moved and gave them a gentle nudge before guiding them along. Peter walked more willingly over to the bed than Jane because he had remembered what it was like when she was a baby, but this was a brand new experience for her. Both of the children looked down at the tiny little pink bundle inside their mother's arms.

She was completely bald and had bright blue eyes. "She's so tiny." Peter said with disbelief.

"I know that's because she was born sooner than she was supposed to be." Rose said. "She just like you," she began as she looked up at The Doctor. "Although you have more hair than I remembered." She admitted.

"Yes well thank you for that, but we still don't know what she'll look like yet when she gets older. She was conceived before I regenerated so she could look completely different then." He explained. "And you know if I remember right, we found out that the person that she was named after didn't end up being such a bad person after all." He added.

"No but she did end up stealing my body." Rose said.

"I still wish I knew what everybody was talking about." Peter said.

"Mummy when you die what is going to happen to your body?" Jane asked her while her mother stared at her with her mouth gaped open. "Because the sky people told me that it's going to be set on fire and thrown into the ocean before you go and live in a mirror." She explained.

"Jane," her father began firmly. "I know that you have such a wild and big imagination and it still amazes me that you can at such a young age, but those kind of made up stories aren't nice to tell." He told her.

"But it's not made up! It's the truth!" she exclaimed.

"That's enough out of you young lady! You're scaring your mother and your brother! And if you keep it up I won't let you be around your sister because I don't want her growing up around talk like that!" he snapped. "Do you understand me?" he questioned her crossly.

"No!" she shouted before she stomped her foot and ran out of the room bursting into tears.

"Jane!" The Doctor called back.

"It's alright, I'll go get her and make sure that she's alright." Peter said before he ran out of the room after her and found her sitting on a bench and continuing to sob. He slowly walked over to it and sat down next to her.

"Are you alright?" he asked her.

"No,.." she began sadly. "No matter what I say Mummy and Daddy won't believe me." She told him.

"Well I do." He said.

"Really? Why?" she asked as she slowly looked up at him.

"Because I'm your brother." He answered. "And we have to stick together." He told her. "But why is Mummy going to die?" he asked her as she sniffed and simply shrugged.

"I dunno." She answered as Peter took a deep breath.

"Look, we both know that you're telling the truth, but I wouldn't bring it up around our parents." He told her.

"Why not?" she asked him.

"Because I think that you'll be a great big sister and I want you to be around the baby. Besides some things you should keep secret in order to protect somebody that you love because that's what Daddy told me." He said as she smiled at him.

"Thanks Peter, and thank you for believing me. I love you." She told him with a sniff.

"I love you too." He told her before they wrapped their arms around each other and hugged each other tightly.

…..

A few days later Rose was able to bring the new baby home and everybody was able to come over and see the new baby except for her mother who was still in the hospital. Rose made sure that she would take all three children and go in and see her when she had the chance. Shadow wasn't sure of what to think of the new baby since it had been a long time since there was a newborn around. Meanwhile Joy and her kittens had settled down for a nap.

"I still can't believe how tiny she is." Jack said as Cassie was placed inside his arms. "Do you want to hold her?" he asked as he looked over at his wife who simply got up and walked away.

"What was that all about?" Rose asked him as he took a deep breath and sighed.

"It isn't a happy story." He answered.

"What happened?" Rose asked him worriedly.

"We lost the baby." He whispered or rather mouthed so the kids wouldn't be able to hear him.

"Oh no." Rose whispered back before she stood up from the couch. "Sarah?" she questioned as she heard sobs coming from the bedroom.

"What happened?" Peter asked his father.

"Why is she crying?" Jane chimed in.

"It's alright kids, your aunt is just having a bad day that's all." The Doctor said before he stood up and followed his wife down the hall.

Back inside the bedroom Rose had been putting her arms around Sarah and pulling her into a loving embrace while she continued to sob inside her chest. "Shh,.. it's alright." She whispered when suddenly her husband came into the room.

"On the contrary no it isn't." he said. "Sarah, I am so sorry that this happened to you and I can't even begin to understand what it feels like to lose a child." He told her.

"I wasn't even going to come today," she began with a sniff as she dabbed her eyes with a tissue after she pulled away. "but I knew that Jack really wanted to see Cassie, and I wanted to see her too." She explained.

"Listen Sarah, Rose and I might not know what you're going through right now, but that doesn't mean that we haven't had our share of heartache." The Doctor told her.

"I know that, it's just so hard knowing that he's never going to be born and we're never going to see his face or find out what he would grow up to be." She said sadly.

"I know and that must be terribly hard on you. An awful, awful feeling. Just remember though that you have so many people who care about you and that even though we have lives of our own, we'll always be there for you when you need us." Rose told her.

"Thanks Rose." Sarah sobbed before The Doctor watched as the two women embraced and Rose kissed her cheek. "You're welcome." She whispered back as she started to blink away her own tears and The Doctor felt as though he might break into tears himself as he continued to watch them for another moment before walking away.
