Chapter 17: Day 10, Found you

Coal screamed when the cannon sounded. Lockwood had her pinned under himself, but luckily Grey was there to protect her. He tackled the boy from Two and allowed Coal to stand and shoot towards Diamonde. Her aim was off from tears in her eyes and anger that shook her arms. Willow and I ran to where they were to help, me and my trident ready to attack.

"Oh! look who we found, Lock!" Di flaunted her bloody weapon.

"Fishgirl! It's been awhile." Lockwood joined Diamonde in smiling fearlessly and savagely seeing me. It must have been a hard look for me since I left. Judging from their shock, they hadn't known I was with the other Underdogs.

"I have a name you know. It's Rain, in case it slipped your simple minds-"

"Very unlikely, Four." Coal ran to where Pann's body lie, shaking and pushing him to wake up as if the cannon never happened. Lockwood spoke to me, absent mindedly giving Coal a chance to grieve. He kept his distance from Grey who stood defensively in front of her. "So, what we're going to do," he pointed to Coal, "is kill her, next your little darling right there," Willow, "then your precious Grey, and then you, beautiful Rain."

"Slow and painfully." Diamonde then began. She had gotten close enough behind us and kicked Coal in the face. The blow sent the latter rolling over a large boulder and Grey after Di. He threw his spear in hand, which she dodged, and sent it clanking along the red rock. Her sword almost met his neck, but missed, sparking on the ground.

Lockwood took this distraction and opportunity to fight Coal as I stood at Willows side. Willow followed my instruction and stayed back while I studied the situation. He had some knives to stab and throw, but Coal had her arrows. She shot at him twice and missed. He threw himself at her tumbling and rolling on the rocky surface, trying to hit her head on something. I jumped to action the moment he had her.

My trident was weighed evenly in my hands and I felt the adrenalin I always did before training back in Four. Hands and feet buzzing with energy, my head was light but focused on my surroundings. I was ready.

The smoke from the mountain side fell upon us at times due to the lack of cover and wind direction, but that never hindered me in fighting Lock. I jumped at him, releasing his hold on Coal's neck on the ground, and managed to slice his left calf with the tip of a prong. Coal choked and coughed as the air returned to her lungs and colour to her face. Her hands scrambled for her bow as Lockwood continued to pursue me. His knives almost caught me the three times he threw, yet each time I had jumped or deflected them flying towards my head and legs.

"Not getting away this easily, Rainy..." he yelled climbing after me on a rock ledge nearby. I had the advantage being higher up than he, but looking down I wasn't able to climb as fast. No sooner had I reached for the last edge, he caught my foot and with a last yell, I tumbled down to the rocks we once fought on.

My eyes opened and gravity took its effect on me, telling me I was lying on my back face up with a pounding headache. Sounds muffled slightly around me, but I was able to gain my composure again. The energy still vibrated my veins. Hair, belonging to myself I discovered, whipped around my face, sticking here and there from my sweat and probable blood.

I saw a knife he'd thrown at me, and rolled out of Lock's way when he jumped off from his position. He wanted to land on me, but found the earth catching his fall. With the knife I got from him I stabbed his leg once more in the same spot. He yelled in pain as I recalled to where I knew Willow was. She looked shaken up and scared at my appearance, I must have had blood on me somewhere inconvenient.

"Are you okay?" I stumbled asked her. She held onto her small dagger tightly.

"Y-yeah. You have blood on your head!" I felt where I had hit the ground at looked to see my own crimson on my hands and in my hair. It made me sick to see how much of it was already out, I could even smell its metallic odor, but it didn't keep me from acting and keeping her safe. "You fell at least ten feet on your back and head-"

"I'm fine, now where can we run to?" I knew from where she was at that she could see where we would be able to run to. These hills and small valleys would be great cover if we ran from them, with the jagged points and gaps between some, we'd get some distance from them. Lockwood was injured a bit after pulling the knife out, still a fighter, but Diamonde wouldn't leave him that easily if we made a break for it.

I looked and saw Coal still edging Lockwood, unsure whether to shoot or leave him to his own death. Diamonde was currently pushing Grey off of her, using a headbutt to slide out of his grasp. She made it to Lock who clenched his leg under his hands, more blood shown than before, to help him in any way she could.

Grey looked around, his confusion visible, and saw Willow and I. He nodded his head towards himself and we ran. Passing Di and Lock, we caught up to Coal who unloaded her arrow from where it was knocked. She reloaded it in her quiver, grabbing her pack from the rocks and running with up with us to meet Grey.

We got a good head start on them. I lead the group through the terrain, while Grey kept his eye on our back side.

All we did was keep moving until it was cold dark. I lost track of the time and how far we had gotten until the ground met me again, a little lopsided this time.

"Rain!"

"I'm fine-" I mumbled. Things were fuzzy and lightweight. I felt like I was floating. My hands returned in feeling, hurt and bruised.

"No, You're sitting down." Grey forced. One of the other three had poured some water on my head were sore from the fall. I knew this from feeling cold run down my scalp onto my shoulders, mixing with my blood and only darkening the already red rocks around us.

This was a nice quiet time, excluding the buzz of post-fighting we all had. Coal and Willow took a breatth and drink while Grey worked on my head and cleaning it out. It didnt bother me if it was infected or not. I would soon be dead, so nothing mattered much other than making sure the others lived.

I was a good patient as my best friend patched me up as best he could with what we had: drinking/rain water, and a bandana. My ears did pick up on a high pitched dinging near by. It wasn't the probable concussion ringing in my ears, but a... Sponsor gift? Now?

Coal caught it and saw the marking of four on it.

"Grey?" She handed it to him. Opening it, he was relieved to see some antibiotic gel in a pocket sized capsule with the capitol seal printed atop. He passed a card to me.

"You know a S.C.?" The name escaped me. I'd never heard it.

The handwritten note read:

Always keep fighting, Rain. I'm rooting for you.
-S.C.

Perhaps it was a company name who sponsored the gift? I looked up and around incase they were watching so they knew I was grateful. No chance I would listen but it was still nice to see some people cared about seeing me survive.

The moment Grey applied the cream to my head I let out a sigh in relief as it cooled the warmth my injury spread. I swear I could almost feel it healing me right there. The cooling breeze helped, too, as we found ourselves settling for the night.

Ughhhh... This one was short and I'm sorry. There will be more in the next one. I promise!

P.S. Who's S.C.? *HINT: it's not Santa Claus*
