As the CID unit was driving down the road, Colby's mind drafted to his family. It had been eight months since he had left. He wondered what they were doing now and if his mother could sleep at night. Feeling a tap on his shoulder broke his thoughts as he turned his head to his army buddy Dwayne Carter.
"Dang, Granger, I've been trying to get your attention for two minutes."
Before Colby could say anything, they heard a noise and the next thing they knew, their Humvee was on the right side. Colby felt something wrap around his left shoulder. He couldn't see anything because there was nothing but smoke. He tried to move, but something was holding him down. He held back a cry when he felt his shoulder on fire as he struggled to get free.
He couldn't breath. This is it, he thought as he welcomed the darkness. He saw his family around the dinner table, laughing. He saw his father James telling him to hold on, that it wasn't his time yet.
Dwayne took off to the burning vehicle when he didn't see Colby anywhere. He finally found him through all the smoke and tried to pull Colby out, but he couldn't do it. Something must be holding him down, he thought as he tried to find out what it was, not caring his own hands were burning. He finally found a piece of metal wrapped around Colby's shoulder. He grabbed it with his bear hands to help his friend.
Once Colby was free, Dwayne dragged him away from the burning vehicle, to a safe area as the vehicle blow up. The impact of the blast made them fly. When the other members of their unit got to them, luckily both of them were alive.
