After what the sniper had said about leaving behind dead weight, Mayday figured he was going to die alone in the snow. So when Crosshair refuses to leave him behind, Mayday begs Death to let him hold on to life at least until they reach the base. If nothing else, he needs to hold on in order for his brother to live. (Not Gone, Merely Marching Away pt.1)
