So this ones kinda really sad. It'll get better I promise!

As the dark navy car pulled through her neighborhood, Ally hugged her purse against her stomach to stop the butterflies from flying up her throat and out of her mouth. Her fingers twitched nervously at the clasp and her toes tapped on the floor mats. Austin messed with the heat for the third time since they had been in the car. She really wished that he would stop doing that. Her internal temperature was already high enough without him cranking it up whenever he got a chill. Of course she couldn't blame him. She would feel too bad about it. Instead she just gave him another smile and half-laugh-half-cough. He didn't seem to notice her nervous ticks as he kept his eyes on the road at all times and despite the fact that both of them loved music the radio was silent. This left the car quiet other than the tapping of Ally's feet. When the car finally pulled into her driveway it was a welcome reprieve to hear the slight grinding of the gears as Austin shifted to park. She wanted to get out of there as soon as possible; she could barely breath, but as soon as she reached to unbuckle her seatbelt, Austin had already opened his door and made his way over to hers. Like a real gentleman would, he pulled open her door for her and all she could do was sit there with her purse clutched in her hands. He had to raise his eyebrows in expectation before she realized that she needed to budge from her seat. She scooted off the seat quickly; her bag still clutched in her hands. It was freezing outside compared to the warmth of the car and the cold grass clung to her feet that were already as cold as ice cubes. He slammed the door and they both paused.

She could have sworn that he was about to offer her his arm but instead he just started towards the front door. She pushed the thought out of her head and hurried behind him. She told herself that she was imagining the fact that he was using his full stride. He never used his full stride when they would walk together. Maybe it was just because he thought it was good manners but it showed the kind of person Austin really was. In that moment Ally wasn't offended; she was worried. Something was wrong. Initially she had blamed the awkward silence on her own problems. She thought that it was because she wasn't initiating any conversations but it wasn't, she realized now. Austin was fighting something and he was keeping it inside of him.

"Austin?" Ally questioned. He didn't hear her and kept walking up the driveway. "Austin." She said louder. She didn't pose it was a question. She didn't waver. He stopped in his tracks. They both stood on the driveway. Neither of them said a word. Austin clenched his hands into fists. He spun around; a smile on his face. Had she been wrong about him being in a bad mood?

"Coming?" he questioned not dropping his smile. Even when she caught up and he lessened his stride, she still couldn't get it out of her head. Something was wrong. Maybe it was just her imagination but something about his smile said that there was something more.

"Austin?" she asked as they reached the steps. He stopped and watched her walk past him and up the stones. At the top, she stood at the same height as him. He laughed as she looked at him, their eyes finally at equal height. "Is something wrong?" she asked. She knew that her concern only came from the feeling that she had decided to hide, but if Austin was hurting, she wanted to know about it. Something had happened and she felt the need to help.

"What are you talking about?" Austin asked, almost scoffing at her concerns. "I'm fine." He looked at the front door and gestured toward it. "You should get in there." He said. She frowned and stood as close to the edge of the step as she possibly could.

"Austin. You know you can tell me anything." She looked him in the eyes and he closed his mouth. His smile drifted away and he looked away. No matter how cliché she wanted to call that moment, she couldn't help but stare at him. The rays from the moon shone down around him and lit up his eyes, his hair, him. Three months and she was claiming the impossible. Why would he be able to trust her that much?

"I know." he said, without moving back to her. She couldn't take her eyes away from him. "I know I can tell you anything." He looked back and their eyes met again. She had forgotten that their eyes were level. The initial shock mentally knocked her off her feet. "I know." He said again before pulling her into a hug. Her fingers shook as she wrapped her arms around his back. She could feel his shoulder bones sticking out and his back muscles un-tensing. One of his arms wrapped around her and held her head in the crook of his neck. The other rested gently above her hips. For the longest time, they stood like this before, Austin's muscles tensed again. He pulled her away. The smile was gone from his face and he didn't bother to replace it.

"I know, but I can't." he said. She dropped her arms to her sides as he turned away. He stood there for a heartbeat before using his full stride to walk back to the car. It took half the time that it did to get to the door. He got in the car and started it. He looked back one more time before driving away, leaving Ally by herself on her doorstep. She watched as he pulled away and gripped her bag. She had a headache to go with the heartache that she allowed inside of her. She sat on the steps and stared down the road. She didn't go in for some time after.
