Chapter 11

Ted looked at Caroline. "You don't want to do this."

Caroline glared at Ted and began to walk towards them. "I do, actually. You certainly can't stop me."

"But we can."

All three turned to look at the new voice, CJ immediately recognizing it. Batman stood about ten feet away, with two Green Lanterns, Wonder Woman, Superman, Flash, and surprisingly a few other League members. Vigilante and Shining Knight,

"Hold her," Batman growled, pointing to Caroline, but he approached CJ, who released her fire. The Justice League moved. The Green Lanterns used their rings and made a sphere around Caroline, who began to shoot ice at the green bubble surrounding her. The rest turned and began to evacuate.

CJ looked up at Batman, her and Ted still holding onto each other's arms so she could stay up. "Do exactly as I say and your city will be safe. Everyone in it will be safe."

That got her attention. She didn't want Caroline or Genocian City to get hurt. "Alright. How do we stop her?"

"Surround her in fire. She'll grow cold: to save herself. Keep the fire hot until she turns herself into ice. The Lanterns will encase the two of you, so you don't damage anything."

CJ looked around. He had brought enough people to evacuate the city, and both Green Lanterns to do this. "How did you know?"

He didn't answer. "Both of you can be harmed by each other's powers, so keep the fire at a distance. Keep yourself at a distance as well. I'm not sure if fire will be able to survive if encased in ice."

CJ blinked. How did he know all this? Half of what he was saying CJ didn't even know herself, so how could he know? She felt like the only way to know would be to know the future, but with the Justice League, it was probably possible, somewhere.

"How do you know it'll work?" Ted asked, finally releasing her. CJ looked up to see that he was pretty much glaring at Batman. "If she gets hurt, it will be on you."

Batman returned the glare, and even though he wasn't glaring at her, CJ wanted to look away. "I'll take responsibility if she gets hurt, but she won't die." Then he stepped back, ignoring both of them as he helped evacuate.

CJ didn't get why he brought so much people. If the Green Lanterns were going to keep the twins in a bubble, surely the city and its citizens would be safe.

She didn't think any more of it, focusing on the task at hand. She felt a hand lightly touch her shoulder. She turned to look up at Ted. "How do we know this'll work?"

She sighed. "We don't."

Ted gave her a pleading look and opened his mouth, but closed it again when she reached out and squeezed his hand. He looked down at their entwined fingers, then briefly closed his eyes. "Be careful."

Their concerned gazes met each other's, and CJ felt her insides crumble. She was about to leave his side once again, and this time was different. What she was about to do would change her forever. She was about to attempt to stop her sister. For good. Could he still care about someone who did that to their own family?

She didn't have any time to think about it then, though, because Caroline screamed. CJ heard the crack of ice meeting the green energy light. She released Ted with one more glance, dreading leaving him to do this, but someone had to stop Caroline. That someone was CJ.

She stepped up to the green bubble that was encasing her twin sister and her ice. The Green Lantern's noticed, and she gave them a nod. Almost in unison both Lanterns made the bubble bigger and a gap was created in them, just big enough for a person to slide through. Before Caroline could notice, CJ brought the fire and quickly got into the bubble, and the light closed behind her.

CJ's fire grew hotter, and she managed to expand it. Caroline must have felt something was different, because through the fire CJ saw her twin spin around sharply, glaring. Her icy stare landed on CJ, and with a grunt a flow of ice began to escape her. It wasn't solid ice, but a sort of mist. When it touched the fire, the two elements crackled against each other, fighting for control.

CJ returned the glare and pushed for more heat, but Caroline had rage in her eyes. The woman had no other emotions but anger and hatred. Those feeling dominated her, which made her powers stronger. Her ice was slowly freezing chunks of fire.

CJ didn't believe that fire could be frozen, unless the ice was extremely cold. This ice must have been. CJ still felt guilt, and confusion; she did not truly want to hurt her twin, which was why her fire- her strength- was not prevailing. The woman of ice, however, did.

CJ tried to talk things out with her twin again. The roar of the fire, and crinkling of the ice, was creating the crackling, wave-like sound, so CJ had to shout. "Why can't we just talk?"

Caroline glared. "You don't understand, do you?" Her words were spit out in disgust.

CJ shook her head, confusion once again racking her. "No, I don't. We're sisters- best friends! I would never hurt you, not on purpose."

Caroline ignored her, pushing more ice. CJ tried to do the same.

Then she seemed to see everything in slow motion. The ice-mist grew closer, freezing all the fire it came in contact with, and even the air. A wall of ice was slowly building, growing closer to CJ, the fire not strong enough to hold it back. CJ couldn't think, she just saw the wall coming towards her, and the wavy image of her sister behind it.

Her sister suddenly fell, disappearing from behind the ice wall, and the ice stopped crawling towards CJ. Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion, and then the ice was falling, too. She blinked, and everything turned back to normal.

The Green Lantern's had seen the struggle, that Caroline had been winning, and dropped the green bubble. Caroline fell because she was no longer standing on it, and the solid ice fell with her. The woman was caught by the green light, but the ice immediately began melting and shattered to pieces when it hit the green light. The Lantern had caught that, too, because there was still people below, and if an ice shard flew their way, someone could get hurt.

The dark-skinned Lantern flew away, dragging the ice with him, probably to go drop it in the harbor. The other one flew down to her level, ignoring the fire like it wasn't there. "Are you alright?"

CJ immediately nodded, though she knew she wasn't. "I'm fine. Let's just get this over with."

He nodded, a small smirk coming to his face, though she saw the sympathy there. She had to fight her sister. Had any of the League members had to do that before? If so, did they also have this struggle? CJ knew that her twin was evil, and that she needed to be stopped, but she knew it had to be her that stopped her.

A minute passed of the two floating there, and finally the other Lantern appeared.

The battle went by in a haze.

They were put in the bubble again, and Caroline immediately attacked her sister. CJ fought back, knowing that she had to be the one. She had to be the one. She released the fire, like she had in New York, when she had to get The Shadow out. But this time, she controlled it. She kept a leash around it's neck, and kept it from veering off course.

CJ pushed the fire against the wall that had formed, and it easily broke through. She watched as her twin panicked, but also released her ice. Like CJ had seen on the video, the heat around her was too much. The ice formed on her skin, and slowly she turned transparent, the clothes on her also growing cold, but they survived.

Her twin screamed, knowing what was coming. "No! I had control!"

CJ grimaced. "Save yourself!" She yelled back, and hopefully she heard. She wanted her twin to survive.

But she must have, because she let all the control go, and once CJ saw that she was completely ice, she absorbed all the fire around her, bringing it all back into herself, leaving the bubble in a chill. She fell to the green light, because without fire, she couldn't fly.

It was silent, except for CJ's breathing. She didn't hear the traffic of the city, of the bystanders in awe nearby, or even the Lanterns as they moved. She didn't remember seeing Caroline getting taken away, and herself brought down to the League.

All she saw was Caroline's face, not as she had just seen her, but before CJ had come to this world. The happy, confident face of her normal twin, the one that had been engaged, enjoying life. The face of a woman who didn't deserve this fate.

If you didn't know: Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Justice League. Yeah.
