I don't own Yu Yu Hakusho, Black Lagoon, or Hikaru no Go. Rated for Black Lagoon.
I have absolutely no excuse for updating this late.
Chapter 3: Family History Interrogation
Everyone's favorite sociopathic gunslinger stormed through the Lagoon Company's headquarters even more irritable than she usually was.
It had all started when they had taken on a job to steal back some high-class weapons from some marauding pirates, leading Revy to have high hopes for a decent fire-fight between them and these new targets. Unfortunately for her, it had quickly become apparent that these pirates were lucky rather than skilled, and none of them were able to put up much of a fight against her. However, that's not what had royally pissed her off.
Rock, in his usual dumbass manner, had decided to rush in and weave through the battlefield and acquire the last crate on the list, coming extremely close to becoming a human version of Swiss cheese.
Even after they had returned the weapons and cashed in the one-hundred grand for the job, it wasn't enough to dissuade Revy from shaking Rock's shoulders roughly and calling him a "fucking dumbass". After all, if they didn't have him around, there'd be no one to do the paperwork or negotiate deals.
That was her story and she was going to stick to it.
Stomping further into the building with her teeth clenched, she slowed down gradually and finally stopped breathing deeply in anger when she looked up again in surprise to find that she'd walked all the way into Rock's room. What exactly drove her to stomp her way here she didn't know.
Oddly enough, she had never stood in his room the entire year that he'd been here despite how often he'd been in her room. She couldn't help but snort as she looked around to see everything organized and put together like the ideal office; it was even neater than Dutch's.
Still a dorky accountant as ever, even though he lives in this shithole city.
Amused by this image, she couldn't help but look around with a mischievous grin on her face as she once again threw away common decency and decided to rifle through his belongings, hoping to find something that she could use to mercilessly tease him over later.
This only led to disappointment as her invasion of the shelves produced only some boring-ass books about different languages, weapons and some random math shit she couldn't care less about. Even going through the table next to his bed only revealed two pictures; one was of him, herself, Dutch and Benny after a stressful job with tired smiles/smirks on their faces. The other was a picture of only her and Rock standing close together with him smiling sheepishly and her looking disgruntled.
Some strange stirring in her chest surfaced and she quickly put the picture back while turning around to stare at his bed.
Somehow, the vision of his meticulously neat bed brought some confused frustration to the surface and she kicked the frame hard to distract herself. Feeling a tiny bit better, she jumped slightly as a rattling sound came from beneath the bed, which she responded to by crouching down for a better look.
When a dislodged piece of wood met her sight, along with a leather wallet lodged in a small compartment in the wide wooden legs, she felt triumph swell up and manifest in a victorious smirk as she reached for her prize.
Jackpot.
She reached for the wallet and picked it up, disappointed at how light it was but still eager to see what exactly their Japanese businessman was hiding from them.
Hoping to find something juicy, she emptied the contents onto the floor and picked them up.
She was surprised to find that these contents were actually nothing more than pictures.
Holding up the first one, she saw an image of Rock standing next to another guy who looked like him, alongside an older couple who were probably their parents and, with faint amusement, noted that Rock resembled his mother.
The next picture held only Rock and the other guy who was probably his brother though they did look somewhat uncomfortable.
After tossing that aside, the last picture she rifled through showed two more boys standing next to him and his brother, all of them looking young with one boy resembling a punk and the other with a wide smile.
She simply stared at the picture for a little bit, drinking in the sense of family in these images, noticing too late the voices moving up the stairway.
"I know it was stupid, Dutch, but Jane was really upset that I hadn't called recently and – "
"Fine, fine, I get it; it still means more paperwork for me later now that our records are soaked and torn. This will be coming out of your paycheck."
"Don't worry about it, Benny; I always keep copies in my drawers in case anything Roanapur-like happens to our papers and…"
The door opened and the hulking form of her boss and the slim frames of her co-workers walked into the room, only to pause and look baffled at the sight of Revy on the floor looking at photographs. She looked back up at them and couldn't help the sheepish grin forming.
"Revy?! What the hell are you doing?!" Rock yelled in a mixture of anger and confusion.
Still grinning, she gestured to the three pictures still in her hands.
"Just takin' a look around, Rock, trying to find something interesting. And looky here; a little family montage for your viewing pleasure."
Positively steaming, Rock stood there fuming while Benny bent over to get a better look at Revy's prize.
"Huh. This isn't such a bad shot. Your brothers sure look natural in this picture."
His self-restraint gone, the Japanese businessman-pirate snatched the picture out of Revy's hand quicker than she expected and shoved it into his pocket. "They're not my brothers, they're my cousins!"
"Cousins?" Dutch questioned in his rumbling tone.
Oh shit.
He had forgotten in that rash moment that his friends were invasive law-breaking pirates. Their double-standard code was remembered as well, given that he knew so little about their backstories yet they often ferretted out pieces of his life story.
If it had only been one of them he could weasel his way out of this, but with all three of them…
Dutch stepped forward with a curious stare. "You're not trying to hide anything from your employer, are you Rock? I can't have my crewmembers lying to me."
Asshole.
It wasn't any better when Benny and Revy turned their stares toward him; and with that, he decided to just give in like a wimp and sat down on his bed trying to think while the men stood and Revy still sat.
"Yeah, these two," he spoke gesturing to the respective images, "are my cousins Urameshi Yūsuke and Shindō Hikaru. Both of them are from my kaa-san's two sisters."
Looking up briefly and noting sadly that they wanted more, he felt compelled to just spill it all out so they wouldn't harp on him later.
"My mother Ketsuko has two sisters, Mitsuko and Atsuko; funny enough, there's a whole decade between kaa-san and Mitsuko-baa-san and three years between her and Atsuko-baa-san."
Spurred on by the new interest in his friends' faces, he gestured to the third-oldest boy in the photo.
"Atsuko-baa-san got pregnant with Yūsuke when she was just a teen and she's always been kind of the black sheep, with wild parties in the darker parts of the city and Yūsuke grew up there, picking fights whenever he could as he grew up." he said while looking pointedly at Revy at the last part.
Ignoring her scowl, he plowed on, "Hikaru was a wild kid too, but now he's a professional Go player and –"
"Isn't that an old man's board game?" Benny interrupted.
Casting a glare at the blonde, Rock retorted "It's played by teens as well, and you're the ones pressuring me to speak so let me talk."
Ignoring their indignant looks, he continued by pointing to his brother's face.
"This is my brother Keiichi. He's the one who passed the bar with flying colors and has a government position right now." He said with a note of bitterness mixed in with pride. Revy remained passive, already knowing his rocky (pun intended) relationship with his family while Dutch and Benny looked confused at his tone.
Deciding to throw in her opinion, the gunslinger snorted "That's boring; why don't ya tell us about that decade between your mom and aunt? What, your gran and gramps couldn't get it up for a whole ten fucking years?"
Fighting down a suicidal urge to tackle her, he replied in as calm of a tone as he possibly could.
"Because contrary to popular belief, not all human beings possess a dark obsession with sex and don't need it to form a meaningful relationship."
Ignoring Revy's murderous glare Dutch took a step forward and took a closer look at the photograph.
"You all look close in this picture."
Rock's smile quickly turned sad as he focused on the picture again.
"Not really; this is actually one of the few pictures of us together. Our families are all on different social circles and our mothers have never really reconciled. Still…" he trailed off as his smile brightened briefly, "There were some good times together."
:::Flashback:::
"Come on, Yūsuke, just one little game of football won't kill you."
"No, dammit, I've got better things to do than fool around with a kiddie game."
Rokuro smiled awkwardly as he stepped between Yūsuke and Hikaru before a shouting match could occur while Keiichi stood next to him with worry and annoyance on his face. Their mothers and fathers were sitting inside attempting to have a non-awkward family conversation for once so it was up to the two eldest cousins to supervise the other two while outside.
He looked at his ten-year-old cousin. "Hikaru, if Yūsuke doesn't want to play that's his decision. If you want, I and Keiichi would – Yūsuke! Put that cigarette away!"
He reached out and took the offending item out of his hands.
"Honestly, can't you and Atsuko-baa understand that these things will kill you one day?"
The delinquent shrugged his shoulders. "Hey, Kojiro used to smoke; I don't see why you have a problem with it."
"Tou-san quit smoking years ago," Keiichi spoke with asperity in his tone, "and you could have the decency to call him 'uncle' instead of just his name."
"Hey, I don't need that kind of crap from – oh, shit, look out!"
While their attention had been diverted, Hikaru in his childish enthusiasm kicked the ball and sent it flying towards the house. Not before coming precariously close to several potted plants, bouncing off the wall and smacking Keiichi and Rokuro on the head like a pinball machine.
Rubbing their bruised skulls, they looked back at Yūsuke and Hikaru, who were both hiding their snickers behind their hands.
Narrowing his eyes in mock anger, Rokuro picked up the football near his feet and childishly bonked both of them on the head with it. Taking advantage of their temporary befuddlement, he sprinted saying "If that's the way you want it, I may as well play my own game of 'touch football'!"
"Hey! Get back here!" they both exclaimed as they ran after him.
Keiichi pondered briefly on the situation and sprinted after them to make sure no injuries were made.
This led to receiving the ball from his brother and with the sudden adrenaline partook in a game of keep-away with the younger cousins running after them. This devolved into a game of dodge ball when Hikaru managed to catch it and promptly threw it at the offending cousins. The unlikely alliance of the two youngest against the elder two broke their composure and they managed to engage in positive interaction.
Once the call for dinner was made, they all stopped suddenly and moved towards the newfound smell of food with the elder two straightening their clothes and the younger two not caring a bit.
None of them remembered to stop smiling as they walked back into the house.
:::Flashback End:::
Rock pulled himself out of his brief recollection and stared back at his expectant colleagues.
"Is your curiosity satisfied yet?"
Dutch shrugged. "Pretty much."
Benny spoke up "So what exactly do they do for jobs? 'Cause Go player isn't much to go on."
Satisfied with a slightly less personal query, he went on to tell the hacker about their careers with an affectionate tone in his voice, missing the flash of jealousy that appeared on Revy's face.
He thought about what they might be doing now and felt a slight longing to see them again, but banished the thought from his mind considering his current illegal profession.
After all, what were the chances of meeting them in the darkness that was Roanapur?
:::Break:::
"We get free tickets for this damn honeymoon and now we're getting stopped because they broke the damn boat in middle of it?! Why didn't you tell us this earlier?!"
Keiko sighed behind Yūsuke's back while Hikaru and Keiichi rolled their eyes.
Hikaru spoke "It's not our fault you two decided to have sex in the middle of the afternoon. Really noisy sex, too."
Keiko blushed furiously knowing that they'd been audible to others while her husband simmered and eventually quieted down.
"This better not screw with our good time."
Keiichi sighed, shrugged, and tried to offer some comfort.
"Please, nothing could possibly go wrong from this."
Fin
Not what I'd call a successful comeback chapter. I didn't want to bother revealing small snippets of the family tree every other chapter so I decided to take care of it in one fell swoop. Japan knows "soccer" as football. For the ages of their mothers I have: Ketsuko – 47; Mitsuko – 37; Atsuko – 34.
