"You kissed her?" Jesse exclaimed in disbelief. Beca had told him about the previous day and how it was the best day of her life. However, her best friend seemed to think otherwise. "I can't believe you did that."

"I didn't have a choice, Jess." Beca scrunched her face and smiled as she thought about that moment. "It was like this cute little thing that she believed I would stay alive if I kissed her. She kind of made a bet with life."

Jesse shook his head. "You know that's a stupid excuse."

"No it's not." Beca scoffed. "It was cute."

Jesse let out a sigh and got up from his seat. He walked towards the younger woman who was lying on the couch as he raised his finger and pointed it in her direction. "You're giving her hope for nothing." He said through gritted teeth.

Beca remained in the same position on the couch as her anger started to take over her moment of happiness. "Why can't you just be happy for me?" she looked up at her best friend who was standing right in front of her with fire in his eyes. "It was the best day of my life, Jesse. It's the first time I've experienced something like this. It's the first time I fell in love. Let me enjoy that feeling for as long as I can."

The man brought his hands to his head and clenched his teeth. "How can you be so selfish? I lent you that car so the two of you could have a day to properly say goodbye to each other, not to make her feel like you're going to get married and live happily ever after!" He threw his hands in the air. "Did it ever occur to you that you're making her life worse than it already is?"

Beca jumped up from the couch with her anger rising as she pressed her finger against his chest. "Did it ever occur to you that maybe I am the one looking for the tiniest bit of hope?" she looked into his eyes and saw that his anger slowly turned into sympathy. She felt her eyes water as she opened her mouth to shout at him again. Instead, a shivery sigh escaped her lips as she broke down and let herself fall back on the couch, staring into space. "Ever since I met her, I am waiting for a miracle. Just one chance to stay with Chloe. To make her happy for the rest of her life." She cried out. "I want to be her best friend when she needs a shoulder and her lover when she needs more. I want to be there for her in bad and good times. Forever."

Jesse's heart broke for the brunette as he watched her suffer. He desperately tried to think of the right words to say to her, but there was nothing. He never thought about it like this. Beca had always been so carefree about her approaching death. She had accepted it and lived by that thought. He never thought that meeting Chloe would make her want to stay alive so desperately. "Beca, I.." he tried, but couldn't finish his sentence.

Beca stood up again, but refused to look at him. "I thought you were my best friend." she wiped her tears away. "I thought you'd understand without the need of me telling you." She finally looked up to meet his eyes again. "I can't believe you would actually think that I would deliberately want to hurt her." She turned around and walked towards the front door. She was disappointed. It wasn't only because Jesse hurt her feelings. It was because she knew he was right. She wanted to stay and run towards any light that appeared in her dark future, but she forgot that there was none. There is no hope. She should've known before hurting Chloe. She should have known before being selfish and give her hope when she was looking for it herself. She knew Jesse was speaking the truth, but just couldn't bear to actually hear it from him.

"Beca, wait!" Jesse yelled. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-"

"No!" Beca turned her head with disappointment clearly showing on her face. She wasn't sure whether the disappointment was meant for him or for herself. "You do not get to say sorry, because you know you're right and it will only make me feel more like shi-" She suddenly stopped talking as she brought her hand to her chest. Sweat drops slowly started sliding down her face as she gasped for oxygen and lost her strength. She reached out for anything close to lean onto, but nothing was near enough. She looked up at her best friend with bloodshot eyes for one last time before finally giving in and falling to her knees.

"No, no no!" Jesse ran to her and dropped down beside her, holding her to keep her from collapsing and using his free hand to take his phone out of his back pocket to call an ambulance. "Don't you die on me now, Beca Mitchell!" He said through gritted teeth as his tears were rolling down his face. He quickly pressed the call button and held the phone to his ear whilst holding on to her tightly. "You can't do this to me, not like this!"

Once at the hospital, doctors immediately took Beca to the IC. Jesse looked around with his eyes searching for a familiar brunette, but she wasn't there. "Stacie, where is Stacie!" He yelled at a few nurses passing by, but didn't get any response as they were rushing to the intensive care. "She needs Stacie!" He ran his fingers through his hair and rushed away to find the brunette.

He had almost finished searching off the whole department when he turned around the corner of the last corridor down the hall and bumped into someone. "Ow, I'm sor- Chloe?" his eyes widened when he realized who it was.

The redhead burst into tears and hugged the man tightly. "She was still conscious when they brought her in, but Stacie has been in there forever. I don't know what's going on." She cried. "We might be losing her, Jesse." She buried her face into the man's chest.

"Stacie is in there? Who's.. Wh- Wait.. Chloe, who are you talking about?" Jesse frowned with confusion plastered on his face.

Chloe pulled back and looked up with furrowed brows. "What do you mean?" she wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand. "I thought you came here for Aubrey?"

"Aubrey?" Jesse gasped. "What happened to her?" he said in a worried tone.

The redhead's gaze slowly dropped to the floor as she took a deep breath. "She's got multiple stab wounds." she swallowed the lump in her throat. When she looked back up, a frown found its way to her face. "Wait.. what are you actually doing he-" her eyes widened when the realization hit her. "Oh my God, no. Please don't tell me it's Beca." She asked as her tears already started running down her face again. "I can't handle to lose both of them, Jesse." She said with a quivering voice. "Please tell me she's alright."

Jesse looked down at his shoes and slowly shook his head, avoiding eye contact with the other woman. "I think she's not going to make it this time."

There were noises.

Faint noises everywhere.

It was kind of like when someone tries talking to you while you're under water. You can hear it, but the words don't make any sense.

Slowly, the noises became clearer, like you're coming up to the surface. Along with the noises, she could also feel her body now. Her heart was beating, her lungs were filled with air.

I'm still alive.

She tried to open her eyes, but didn't have enough energy to do so. Despite the lack of energy, she managed to move her index finger a little. She concentrated on the voices again and it felt like they were closer this time. She swore she could hear her name being called, but it was still unclear. Then she felt something covering her hand. Someone was holding her hand. It was warm and comforting, giving her just enough energy to open her eyes. Everything was blurry in the beginning. She squinched her eyes and saw the silhouette of woman. The clearer her view became, the better she could feel her heartbeat.

"Beca?" she could finally hear. "Beca, do you hear me?"

"..hmmhm" Beca groaned in response.

"Oh thank God, she's gaining consciousness." Chloe said happily as she turned to Jesse. "Call Stacie!"

Jesse quickly turned on his heel and shot out of the room.

"Chloe?" Beca mumbled.

The redhead turned her head back to the other woman and squeezed her hand reassuringly. "Yes, I'm here. What is it?"

"What- How long have I been unconscious?"

"3 days." Chloe answered. "They moved you to a private room today."

"How am I-" she got cut off by a tall brunette storming into the room, with Jesse close behind.

"Welcome back, little fighter." Stacie smiled as she prepared a few things for a check-up. "We found you a new heart just in time and the surgery went well."

Beca looked down at her hospital gown clad chest and could already feel the stitches where they twisted to keep her new heart safe at place.

"How are you feeling?" Jesse walked over to the bed Beca was lying in.

"I would've thought that I'd be more excited to hear that news, but I feel more like I've been run over by a herd of elephants." She groaned out.

The man chuckled and shook his head. "New heart, old Beca."

Beca smiled weakly as her eyes scanned the room. "I really thought I wasn't going to make it this time." She furrowed her brows when it remained silent. "Have you guys been here all the time?"

"Yes." Chloe responded quickly. "My mom, Lily, Benji, Amy and even Grams visited."

The fresh flowers and a balloon with the text "Get Well Soon' on her right were warm gifts from their visit.

"That's nice." Beca smiled softly. "How are they?"

"Waiting for you to get better."

"They won't have to wait any longer." The brunette took a quick glance at Chloe's hands covering her own before looked back into her baby blue eyes. "Did Aubrey visit?"

Chloe's grip on Beca's hand weakened as she dropped her gaze to her lap. She could already feel the tears trying to fight their way out.

"Did I say something wrong?" Beca frowned upon seeing the change in the redhead's expression. She looked up at Jesse, then back at Chloe. "What happened?"

Stacie put a hand on Chloe's shoulder and slowly rubbed her thumb in circles. "You just woke up, Becs. I need to go through daily blood tests and echocardiograms until you're stable enough to go home. You need to take it easy, because there's still a risk for your body to reject the new heart."

"Why aren't you answering my question?" Beca started to feel worried. "I'm fine, just tell me what's going on." She tried to move but immediately regretted it when she winced from the pain in the middle of her chest, caused by the stitches tensing up at the movement.

Stacie immediately moved closer to Beca and calmed her down. "What did I tell you about taking it easy?" She warned her sternly.

Beca relaxed herself and let out a sigh in defeat. "Fine, don't tell me." She said as she rolled her eyes. "Can you at least get me out of this hospital gown? It's embarrassing."

"No, I can't." Stacie shook her head. "The check-ups are easier this way." She turned to Chloe who still had her eyes focused on her lap. Staring without really seeing anything, eyes out of focus. The world and any other sense of what she was doing seemed to have drifted away. Stacie lifted her head to look at Jesse. "I'm gonna need you and Chloe to wait outside for a while." She said as she pointed her eyes at the redhead, motioning for Jesse to help her out.

Beca watched how the woman jumped at Jesse's touch on her shoulder, as if someone shook her awake from a bad nightmare. She watched how an obvious fake smile found its way to Chloe's lips when she slowly got up and looked her way before turning around and leaning onto Jesse who helped her walk out of the room. Beca waited for them to close the door before giving her attention back to Stacie. "I thought she'd be happier to see me alive."

"She is." Stacie simply replied.

"Unless it's not about me." Beca eyed her friend suspiciously. "I noticed the change on her face when I mentioned Aubrey. What happened? Did they fight?"

"No, they didn't fight." The taller brunette sighed. "Just let it go for now, okay?" she squeezed Beca's hand reassuringly. "It's not good for you to be worrying too much right now."

"Okay." Beca gave in. "Okay, just make sure Jesse will take care of Chloe for now."

"Sure, but let's make sure to take care of you first." Stacie smiled lightly. "Then you can take over that job.".

5 days later

Beca was sitting in her hospital bed watching TV when Stacie walked into the room with a small pile of files in her hands. "I've got the results of your blood tests." The tall brunette smiled.

"Good. Can I go home now?" Beca sighed. "I don't feel very much alive locked up in this room."

Stacie shook her head and chuckled as she put the files down on the nightstand next to Beca's hospital bed. "No, not yet. But according to these results.." she gestured at the files. "Your new heart is adjusting perfectly. If it goes on like this, I can send you home in approximately 2 days."

"Two more days in hell, great." Beca pouted.

The taller brunette rolled her eyes. "Oh hush, be grateful that heart saved you the trouble of literally going to hell."

"Do you really think that low of me?" Beca scoffed. "Do you actually think I'd go to hell?"

"Yes." Stacie tried keeping a serious face, but failed miserably. "No, of course not. If you were a bad person, Aubrey wouldn't…" her eyes widened at what she was about to say. She quickly tried changing the topic and tried picking up the files, but dropped them on the floor. "Did I already tell you that Chloe will be visiting you in an hour?" she said as she bent down to pick them up.

"Yes, you did." Beca frowned at the taller woman. "Aubrey wouldn't what?"

"She wouldn't have been friends with you." Stacie quickly responded, refusing to make eye contact. "You told me about how she's always very picky and.."

Beca didn't let Stacie finish her sentence and cut her off. "Why is it that whenever I mention Aubrey, everybody acts like somebody kicked a puppy?" She turned on the bed and let her legs fall over the edge. "Are you going to tell me what happened between Aubrey and Chloe or not? She never even came to see me and I don't know how to ask Chloe. I'm afraid I might say something wrong."

"Nothing happened between them, Beca." Stacie briefly closed her eyes and sighed deeply before she got up and finally looked the other woman in the eyes. "It's something Chloe should tell you, not me."

"Fine, give me my phone. I want to call Chloe and tell her to come and tell me, right now." She demanded impatiently.

"No, I told you that you can't use your phone yet." Stacie tilted her head. "The radiation is bad for your heart."

"Okay, then you call her for me." The smaller brunette said as she crossed her arms across her chest.

Stacie stared at her in disbelief. "She's going to be here soon, just have a little patience."

"No, I don't have any patience left." Beca raised her voice. "You've been telling me to have patience for days, I need to know or I will die from curiosity instead of a heart failure."

"You can't die from curiosity." Stacie replied dryly.

"Everything has its first time." The smaller woman made clear she wasn't going to give up. "Phone, now." She reached out and opened her hand.

The doctor sighed in defeat. "Fine, I'll get it for you." She turned on her heel and walked out of the room to get Beca's phone as the smaller brunette grinned after her.

As Beca was waiting, Chloe knocked on the door before walking inside and taking a seat beside Beca's bed. "Hey you."

"Hey." The brunette smiled upon seeing her. "I was just about to call you. Stacie said you would be here in an hour."

"I had some stuff to take care of and I finished it earlier than I thought." Chloe returned the smile. "How are you doing?"

"I'll be better when I get out of here." She gestured around the room.

"You survived 5 days here already, just a little more patience" Stacie said as she walked in with Beca's phone in her hand. She greeted Chloe with a smile. "You're here, which means I can take this phone back again." The doctor was about to turn around when Beca spoke up.

"No wait. Now that it's here, I might as well check my messages." She thought that maybe Aubrey left her a text or something and figured it would be better to know what's going on before asking Chloe about it. She still wasn't sure whether it would hurt her or not. "By the way, I survived 8 days here."

Stacie sighed and walked over to Beca, handing the phone over. "You weren't conscious for 3 days, so that doesn't really count as surviving." She sat down on the edge of the bed.

"Even if I was unconscious, I still survived. On autopilot, so…" Beca slyly said and her lips curved up to a cocky smile. She then lightly added ".. and of course the machines helped, but whatever."

Chloe couldn't help but flash a tiny smile and coyly looked up at Stacie with a look that said 'she got you'. The doctor rolled her eyes and half smiled, accepting her defeat.

"Beca took the phone and quickly tried turning it on, only to be met with a brief dead battery warning before it shut down again. "Daamnit." She sighed impatiently and turned to Chloe. "Do you have a charger?"

"Sure, it should be somewhere in here." She picked up her purse and started going through it. "Ah, there it is." She took it out and got up from her chair to plug it into the nearest socket and gave the other end to Beca for her to connect it to her phone.

"Thanks." Beca quickly tried turning it on again and took a deep breath when it finally showed the start-up screen. She entered her pin code and quickly went through her messages. She saw that Aubrey had left a voicemail 8 days ago. Frowning and wondering why the blonde never called after that, she held it to her ear to listen to what the woman had to say.

"You know.. I've always wanted to see the love in her eyes that I have in mine. Today, I've had finally seen it." Beca knew exactly who she was talking about and listened more carefully. "I've seen her eyes sparkle with so much love. So much desire. However, it was not for me. It will never be for me. You're her first love, Beca. I can't compete with you.. I bought her a little goodbye gift. It's a necklace. She loved it, but didn't want to accept it from me, because it was too expensive. Now she has to, because I'm gonna leave this city for a while. I can't be in her life like this. I.."

The brunette's eyes widened at what she heard next. Her jaw dropped and shock was present in her eyes as she tried to hold the phone against her ear with her shaky hand. She brought her other hand up to cover her mouth in disbelief and turned her head to look at Chloe.

Not knowing about the voicemail, the redhead furrowed her eyebrows in worry. "What's wrong?" she asked. "Beca, talk to me. What's going on?"

A loud scream for help was the last thing Beca heard before there was a long beeping sound, indicating the end of her voicemail.

"Beca.." Chloe's eyes had now widened as she moved to the edge of her chair. "Who was that screaming?"

It took some time and strength for Beca to mutter a soft "Aubrey.", causing Chloe and Stacie to look at each other with raised eyebrows from shock as they knew exactly what that was about. They couldn't hide it any longer..

"Give it to me, right now." The man demanded.

Aubrey's heart started speeding as she slowly tried turning around to see what was being pressed against her back. She froze and forgot how to breathe when she saw a man in a forage cap holding a knife. "W- what, my phone?" she asked with a quivery voice as she quickly handed it over. To her surprise, the man refused to take it.

"That thing isn't worth shit compared to what you've got there." He gestured towards the box in her hands. "That's what I want."

"No!" Aubrey's fear suddenly disappeared as her defensive side took over. "You can have my phone, wallet, whatever you want, take it all. Just not this." She held the box behind her back. It wasn't just a box for her. It was her goodbye gift. The first actual gift she has ever bought to show her love for the redhead. It was something that Chloe loved. She had seen it in her eyes. She loved it, but couldn't accept it. This gift meant more to the blonde woman than anything else at that moment, and it was the last one in the store.

"Give me that daamn box, woman." The man grumbled angrily as she moved closer to the blonde.

"Over my dead bo-" The man didn't even give Aubrey the chance to finish her sentence as he thrusted his knife into his victim, making her choke on her breath.

"I'm not gonna give it to you." She still protested through gritted teeth, choking on her words as she brought her free hand to the bleeding wound on her stomach. "This is no different from what I've been feeling inside for a while now." She held the tiny box tightly in her hand and attempted to take a step back, only to bump into the edge of the fountain she was standing in front of.

"You might as well just give it to me, because I will snatch it out of your dead hands eventually." The man stabbed her again, hoping she would finally give in and let go of it, not knowing whom he was dealing with.

Aubrey collected all the strength she had left to kick him right in his crotch and make a run for it. Though she wouldn't call tugging along the fountain side 'running'.

The man groaned in pain, but didn't give his victim a chance to get away from him as he shot after her and reached out and grabbed her arm tight enough to cause bruising.

"Help!" Aubrey began to scream. She saw the man push his knife into her side once again. If she hadn't seen it happen, she probably wouldn't have known. She didn't feel it anymore. Her body felt numb and her legs finally gave up, making her collapse. The blonde still managed to find the strength to hold on to the box tightly. That's all she could think about now. Getting the necklace to Chloe.

"Hey!" Two men in the distance came running towards them after hearing the blonde scream for help. "Hey, what's going on here? Leave the girl alone!" The tall and muscled man guy yelled.

As the criminal decided to give up and make a run for it, the muscled man started chasing him whilst the shorter man kneeled down beside Aubrey. He took his shirt off and pressed it against her wounds as an attempt to stop the bleeding before reaching into his back pocket and take his phone out to call an ambulance.

After ending the call, the man tried to keep Aubrey conscious by conversing with her. Luckily, the ambulance showed up within 5 minutes. They performed the first actions on spot before carrying her into the ambulance to continue the treatment and rush her to the hospital.

".. I tried, Becs. I tried to save her." Stacie explained after they told the tiny brunette what had happened to Aubrey. "When we took her in, she was conscious. As soon as she saw me, the first thing she said was.." the doctor trailed off as her eyes dropped to the floor. "She told me that. If she couldn't make it.. that I.. If I.."

"She wanted to have her heart given to you." Chloe finished when she saw Stacie struggling with her words. "She wanted you to be saved if she couldn't be."

"Why didn't you tell me before?" Beca asked in confusion. "It could've been better than finding out like this."

"I was scared." Stacie replied with her eyes still focused on the floor as if she had never seen the colors of it before.

Beca furrowed her eyebrows. "Scared? Of what?"

The tall brunette finally brought her eyes up to meet her friend's as she let out a sigh. "What did you expect? That we'd tell you right after you woke up? I can't give you bad news like that when your heart needs to adjust." She paused for a moment and then continued really quickly. "And I was scared that you'd think that I didn't do my best on saving her, which I did. I promise, I really tried. She had lost too much blood and we couldn't fi-"

"Woah, stop." Beca interrupted her. "Firstly, you really need to do something about that doctors' specialty face when you're talking to me. Secondly, that thought never even crossed my mind. I know you, and I know that you'd always give it your all when it comes to saving a human life, no matter who's it is."

Beca smiled softly at Stacie's nodding. Her eyes slowly shifted from the tall brunette to Chloe and eventually to the floor. The realization that Aubrey is no longer with them suddenly hit her. No, that's incorrect. She was still with them. She was living on inside of Beca. You could say that literally and figuratively. The brunette slowly brought her hand to her chest which gave her this strange feeling as if she could reach out to Aubrey. Feel her presence, alive and well. She looked up at the redhead again and slowly opened her mouth to speak. "Are you okay? How are you dealing with all of this?"

"Not very easily, obviously." Chloe stated as a matter of factly. "She was my best friend, and always will be." She gazed into Beca's eyes and took a little time before speaking again. "I'm just glad you're okay. I don't think I'd have gotten over losing 2 best friends with one of them being the love of my life."

Beca wasn't aware of the tears escaping her eyes until Chloe reached over and gently wiped them off. The brunette brought her hands up and placed them on Chloe's as she moved her head to kiss the redhead's palm.

The taller woman leaned over and rested her forehead on Beca's as she let her own tears slowly fall.

"We're going to get through this together." Beca muttered, kissing the tears away. "We're going to be okay."

Chloe nodded and pulled back to briefly look into the other woman's eyes before leaning in again and capture her lips. It wasn't the same as the last time. There was no goodbye in this kiss. There was no guilt, no rush, no fear. There was only desire, love and a promise. A promise of a lifetime.

Stacie smiled and decided to leave the two lovebirds alone for a while. Just watching them had brought tears to her eyes. After all that her best friend has been through, she could finally be together with someone that made her happy without anything holding her back. She tiptoed out of the room and closed the door behind her. When she took a step forward, a man blocked her path.

Seeing the doctor's watery eyes, Jesse started to get worried. "What happened?" he asked.

Stacie smiled. "Love happened." She took the man by his arm and dragged him along. "Beca and Chloe are working things out, I wouldn't disturb them."

"Oh." Jesse sighed in relief. "I'm glad."
