Epilogue
It's been 13 years since Beca had left the hospital. Luckily she never needed to go back there again, besides the follow-up visits for an echocardiogram and blood tests for four months after the surgery. The heart seemed to have adjusted just fine. She had started to DJ again, but not in clubs. The brunette had her very own studio together with Jesse.
Chloe was working as a manager at a trading company. She had started as a seller employee, but had proven to be worth a lot more in a very short time. She got promoted after only working there for one and half year.
Both Beca and Chloe didn't mention the past very often. They didn't like to be reminded of all the pain and guilt they had to go through until they made it to where they are now. Happy and still in love.
"Aubrey! Can you come down stairs? Someone is here to see you honey!" Chloe shouted before walking the guest into the living room.
As they sat down on the couch and started talking about rainbows and butterflies, a small pile of red hair peeked through the crack of the door. She had the same flamy red hair as Chloe's. "Aunt Lily!" the girl exclaimed in excitement as soon as she recognized the guest before moving away from the door and run towards Lily.
The brunette welcomed her with open arms and lifted her up to kiss her little bubbly cheeks. "Happy birthday, angel." Lily put the girl back down to hand her a gift.
Aubrey tore the gift wrap off of the package with a big smile plastered on her face and her dark greyish blue eyes were widened in happiness. Lily knew how much her niece loved drawing, so what better gift would there be than a new sketchbook and drawing equipment? "Thank you, Aunt Lily!" she hugged her aunt briefly before running off to fill the sketchbook with her magical talents.
"You're definitely her favorite aunt." Chloe smiled as she watched her daughter get lost in her drawing world.
"I'm her only aunt." Lily raised her eyebrow jokingly.
"You know what I mean." The redhead laughed.
"I know, I was only joking." The brunette assured her with a smile. "So, where's Beca?"
"At work." Chloe responded with a hint of disappointment in her voice. "She was supposed to have a day off for Aubrey's birthday, but something came up." She rolled her eyes at the last part of the sentence as if it was hard to understand how this 'something' was important enough to miss their daughter's birthday.
"She'll be here soon." Lily brought her hand to her sister's knee and squeezed it reassuringly. "You know her, she would've ignored it if it wasn't very important. She's a great wife and mother, you know that."
"You're right." Chloe sighed. She turned to the other woman and stared at her for a short amount of time before an adoring smile found its way to her lips.
Lily furrowed her brows in confusion. "Why are you looking at me all creepy?"
The redhead chuckled lightly at her younger sister's reaction. "It's just, I feel so blessed with a supportive sister like you." She explained. "You remind me of Aubrey sometimes."
"This little one?" the brunette gestured at her niece. "Or Aubrey Posen?"
Chloe took a deep breath and exhaled again. "Posen."
"Who's Aubrey Posen, mommy?" the little girl who happened to have overheard the conversation looked up from her sketchbook. "She's got a nice name." she smiled cheekily.
The two women turned their heads in surprise. They weren't aware that the small redhead was listening. They hadn't told her the story behind her name yet. Chloe and Beca thought it would be better to wait until she was old enough to understand, despite her amazing cleverness that showed that she was a lot wiser than the average 8 year old girl.
"Uh- I- it's an old friend from uh-" Chloe wasn't sure what to say as she struggled with her words. Her daughter remained silent and waited for her mother to speak. Chloe sighed and figured she'd just tell her. Maybe it was time that she knew. Although she would've preferred Beca to be there too, she didn't really have much of a choice right now. "How about you come sit here next to me, and I'll tell you about Auntie Aubrey." she scooted closer to Lily and patted the empty space on the couch.
As Aubrey made her way over to the couch, Lily got up and walked towards the kitchen. "I'll give you a few moments alone."
"No, wait." Chloe spoke up. "I might need you."
The brunette curled her lips and nodded before walking back to her seat. She listened how Chloe began from the day she met Aubrey in class to the day she became her girlfriend and eventually the day she had passed away. Of course the memories brought tears to her bright blue eyes, making Lily cry along with her since she hadn't heard this story from beginning to end herself. She rubbed her sister's shoulders from time to time as a gesture of support until Chloe was done talking.
"And that's why we named you Aubrey." Chloe finished, wiping a tear off her cheek.
Aubrey remained quiet for a moment and took the time to look at her mother's expression before hugging her tightly. "I wish I could've met Auntie Aubrey." She mumbled against Chloe's chest. "She sounds wonderful."
"She was." Chloe smiled through her tears as she wrapped her arms around her daughter. "I will never forget her."
"We will never forget her." Beca moved away from the entrance where she had been leaning against while listening to her wife. No one seemed to have noticed her standing there or hear her come in. She made her way over to her wife and daughter, kissing them both on their forehead before kneeling down in front of them and placing her hand over her heart. "She'll always be here with us."
Chloe brought her own hand to the golden necklace around her neck. She rubbed her thumb over the form of a little angel who had diamonds on its wings. The necklace that had caused her best friend's death, but also rescued the love of her life. She wasn't sure whether it was a bad token or the best one, but she knew it meant the world to her.
"And now, my surprise." Beca broke the silence as she rumbled through her bag and took a CD case out of it. "This is for you, little devil." She gave the CD to her daughter who turned it around and read the back of the case.
"You made a CD for me?" Aubrey exclaimed in excitement. "All my favorite songs are on here!"
"Yup." Beca kissed the girl on her forehead once again. "Even a few new ones, that I wrote, sang and mixed for you AND your beautiful mother who brought you to this world. That's worth celebrating too." She put her hand over her wife's hand and squeezed it gently. "It wasn't completely finished yet, that's why I had to leave for a while." She explained. "I'm sorry about that."
"It's okay." Chloe beamed at the woman who was still kneeled down before them. "You are amazing, thank you. I should have known that you were up to something."
"Well, let's listen to them!" Lily interrupted. She got up and took Aubrey by her hand.
As they made their way to the music player on the other side of the room, Beca moved over to sit where Aubrey was sitting a few seconds ago.
"I'm sorry I told her without talking to you first." Chloe began as soon as Beca sat down. "It came up and Aubrey got curious, I thought I could as well just tell her, because I don't want to lie to her."
"It's fine." Beca assured her wife as she placed her hands on either side of her face and kissed her passionately before pulling away. "It was about time anyway." She moved and put her arm around the redhead's neck and watched their daughter dance with her aunt to Beca's music.
Chloe moved closer to her wife and rested her head on her shoulder. She felt as if a weight got lifted off of her shoulders after finally getting that off her chest. She used to be afraid of reliving all the pain if she had to talk about their past, but somehow it felt good. She was relieved and could enjoy her time with her family as well as cherish the times she used to have with Aubrey Posen.
"By the way, I haven't told you in three days." Beca mumbled softly, rubbing her thumb over Chloe's shoulder.
"You haven't told me what?" Chloe asked in confusion as she lifted her head to look at her wife.
Smiling, Beca slowly kissed the other woman on her cheek, close to her lips. "That I love you."
Chloe smiled from ear to ear and cupped her wife's cheeks before leaning over and kiss her hard. She pulled away and rested her head against Beca's. "I love you too. So much."
