Chapter 3
The next day, everything seems to be the same. Sam is too shy to get closer to Blaine, he doesn't say hi to him when they walk into the room, but he has enjoyed the pleasant look Blaine has given to him when he's passed by his desk. At the same time, Sebastian has stared at his friend almost sickly. He hates heart eyes, hates that kind of attitude that doesn't suit a boy who wants to become a man. The real thing is that Sebastian hates every kind of romantic gesture, gaze or present. That is why he can't support Blaine with his plan to conquer Sam like this, with longing looks.
Kurt is tired about this too. He didn't know that having his best friend in love could be so hard. This morning he has also noticed the way Sebastian has looked at Blaine and smirked in his direction, so he knows that they're probably in the same situation.
He thinks that they've washed off their doubts at least because it's evident that Blaine likes Sam back, so all he has to do is to push his best friend to address him more than two words at least.
"Could you stop looking at him like this and go and talk to him instead?" He says as soon as they sit behind him as usual. Sam wants to pretend it's just random, but it's way too obviously done on purpose for it to be believable.
"I can't." Sam replies like Kurt has just suggested him to ride a rocket to Mars.
Kurt is a little stunned at his words down. How can it be this bad? They like each other but none of them seems willing to risk and go talk to the other; which is even more stupid considering that they had greeted each other yesterday. "Sam, you'll have to do it sooner or later."
"What if we're wrong? What if he doesn't like me?" He asks. There are really a few chances that they're wrong about this, but it might be possible anyway. That scares Sam a lot.
"You're kidding, right?" Kurt asks surprised, keeping his voice as down as he can so that Sebastian and Blaine won't hear.
"No, you know I wouldn't joke on this." Sam replies sounding a little offended.
Kurt sighs and lets the conversation drop during the lesson; he tries for a way to get out of this crazy sentimental routine actually.
At the same time though, Sebastian and Blaine are discussing the matter, but they're writing on papers so that no one would hear.
Why don't you say hi to him? He's sitting behind you.
Sebastian sniggers and doesn't expect the reply that comes from Blaine.
Why don't you mind your own business?
Blaine writes back to let him know that he doesn't want to talk about it.
Sebastian knows there's a reason why he doesn't want to talk now because he wanted to talk during the last few days. In fact, it bore Sebastian to death.
What's wrong? Why aren't you telling me about how blond his hair is?
Because it's obvious that he doesn't like him. Blaine writes on the new piece of paper. He greeted me yesterday in the locker room and hasn't done so this morning, that's probably because he doesn't like me that much.
Sebastian thinks about what to reply because Blaine's doubts are realistic, but it's evident that Sam likes him back. He has no idea why every time things seem to have come to a turning point, Blaine takes a step back. Maybe he thinks that Sam is too good for him, but Sebastian is pretty sure Blaine is one of the best looking guys he's ever met and he knew a lot of them. Therefore, there's no chance Sam might not like him, not physically at least – and they don't know each other for now, so that's the only way they could like one another.
Don't you think that maybe is as shy as you are?
He writes down and doesn't add anything to it.
Blaine reads it slowly hiding it so that Kurt won't read it – since he's sitting beside Sebastian.
I think he's not interested. Maybe he's not even gay.
He turns to Sebastian waiting for him to snap. Sebastian has his virtues (some of which he hides pretty well), but he rarely knows the right way to say something. He's too direct and sometimes he even becomes mean.
Indie, he turns to Blaine and gives him one bitch glare.
If you don't stop this now, I'm going to slap you so we'll see if he'll like you when you're face will be flushed from slapping.
When Sebastian gets to threats things are becoming serious.
Ok, maybe I could say goodbye to him.
Blaine writes down, not wanting to risk.
That's my boy! I see that my threats make your smarter.
Sebastian moves carefully so that the boys behind them would read anything.
Indeed, Sam feels like he's about to pass out. He doesn't manage to look at Kurt without turning completely so he avoids it; but he imagines him being ready to squeak because of his best friend's crush or something.
Considering Kurt's thoughts at the moment, it's like he doesn't know him at all.
In fact, Kurt has noticed the little paper pieces wandering in front of his eyes, and so has done Sam, but though Sam is desperately trying to reading something out the exchange, Kurt just wants to calm him down so that Sam doesn't get caught as he tries to spy on Blaine.
He is a little curious too of course, but he won't come down to spy on the silent conversation.
When the bell rings, Sam stops and Kurt breathes in relief, though his breath gets cut when the two guys in front of them stand up and now they're face to face. Sam takes courage and he talks to Blaine, finally.
That whispered "bye" comes out of his lips lowly, as if his voice has cracked, after Blaine's little smile to him, which is nothing like the one he gave when entered the room earlier though.
"If you asked him to get on his knees, he'd even suck your cock by now."
Sebastian's joke is way too clearly to all of them. It shocks them actually, especially Sam. More than the joke itself it is the fact that Blaine doesn't say anything about it. He just ignores Sebastian but he doesn't even rebuke him for such a disgusting joke.
It hurts even more when Sam sees him lean over to murmur something in his friend's ear. He has no idea what it is, but thinking that it might just be referred to the joke is killing him.
Kurt's spontaneous reaction is to leave Sam and run after the two boys who have exit the classroom.
"What's your problem, Smythe?" He yells getting their attention and even the attention of other people in the hallway. Meanwhile, Sam has run to him and he's hoping that Kurt hasn't started scratching their faces with his manicure nails already.
"Do you have a problem, Hummel? Because I don't have any." Sebastian replies turning abruptly to him. It's evident that he is more confused than angry but as nervous as Kurt is, he barely notices.
"I have a problem with you right now: how dare you say such a thing about my friend?" He asks trying to keep his voice down not to get too much attention. Sebastian must agree because he walks much closer to Kurt, maybe to avoid that someone might notice how flamed is the conversation.
"Are you serious? I didn't say anything." He justifies himself, but Kurt doesn't get angry on nothing.
"Anything? Who would suck on who's cock if only was asked?"
Sebastian's eyes go wide for a moment: they did get the joke, but that was just that, nothing more than a joke. He was joking, that's the way he jokes and even if he had rebuked him, Blaine didn't get mad at him because he knows that's the way Sebastian speaks: vulgar and direct.
Kurt seems like he doesn't get it, in fact he looks quite mad.
"You're talking about my joke, it was a joke, so I really don't plan on explaining, especially when I don't know you and I don't have any intention of getting to know you."
"Well, at least we agree on something. You and your little friend stay away from now on." Kurt threatens, even though he knows he doesn't sound that convincing.
Before Sebastian can reply, Blaine is wrapping his arms around him to tug him away; Sam is doing the same with Kurt, pulling him by one arm and stroking his hip with his free hand to calm him down.
Kurt is the first to give up as Sam carries him away. Sebastian follows quickly.

"I can't believe this!"
Blaine's yelling goes straight to his friend's ears. They have spent the afternoon at his place pretending that they've been studying, but they're both too nervous to think about something that isn't Kurt's anger and Sam Evan's lost gaze.
Blaine is mad, furious, and he's probably right, so Sebastian just stays in silence and lets Blaine throw everything at him until he'll calm down.
"You and your damned long tongue! You really can't keep from judging people, can you? Can't you hold your freaking comments and keep them to yourself?" He asks rhetorically because Sebastian and his stupid jokes have fucked up everything, because he had thought that after they greeted and said goodbye to each other, it was going to be easier to talk to Sam. But considering the way Sam had looked at him judging him because of Sebastian or maybe the fact that Blaine didn't slap him for the joke – he doesn't know – he isn't sure they're going to have a future approach.
"Blaine, calm down. Come here …" Sebastian says tapping with his hand on the bed where he's already sitting.
He knows that some long cuddling and cartoons could do a lot to fix Blaine's moods and as far as he's concerned he's already suffered too many screams against him considering that he still hasn't understood why Hummel got so mad at that silly joke.
"How can I calm down? You basically called Sam an easy guy and now he'll never talk to me again. It's all your fault." He says dramatically.
"He will talk to you, trust me. His friend will understand that he overreacted, and he'll come back to you." Sebastian reassures him both to convince him and avoid being rebuked once more.
"He won't," Blaine groans, tears gathering in his eyes.
He's spent weeks hoping, wanting Sam as he's never wanted anyone else, trying to gather the courage to go and talk to him, and eventually Sebastian fucked up everything.
"Do you actually think he's never going to talk to you because of a joke? Haven't you notice the way he looks at you?"
"Yeah, but his friend is freaking angry because of you and he'll probably do everything to convince him that I'm an asshole, just like you, because I didn't defend him; and he wouldn't be completely wrong." He says again, sounding as if the world is about to end.
"Screw Hummel. If he likes you so much, Sam is going to talk to you. If he won't, that he wasn't worth it." Sebastian is actually convinced about this, even though he has to admit that sharing the same suffering with Kurt made him feel closer to him even if they don't know each other (though maybe Hummel is just happy for his friend or something instead).
"Do you really think that?" Blaine asks a little softer sitting beside Sebastian on the bed. He's still angry, but he considers that maybe there's a hope and everything can be fixed.
"Yes, I do. Sam likes you a lot, and if he likes you as much as I think he does, it won't be his friend to keep him away from you just because he's on his period. He'll come back somehow." He passes a hand along Blaine's back to press him against his own side. He loves the little childish side of Blaine, it's maybe the best part of him because it blends well with Sebastian's.
Blaine lets Sebastian cuddle him but he can't stop thinking that he will never get with Sam.
"I'm so afraid that he'll never talk to me again … I'm still mad at you." Blaine adds the last words only because he realizes he's forgiving Sebastian too soon. He has to make him understand that a few words aren't enough to be forgiven for what he's done.
"I know, but now you have to try and make him yours." Sebastian tries to convince him stroking his back like a older brother would do.
"And you have to stop making him run away from me," Blaine adds, but he stills sink a little in his hug.
Sebastian just laughs at the joke knowing that it's still partly true. He is good at making people run away and today he has almost made Blaine run away too. It's all complicated to him when it comes to relationships with people – when they last for more than two days; it's like that since he was a kid and he stole the toys from other kids, even hitting them if necessary.
That's how he is and he'll always be like that.
/
From the moment Sam had closed the door behind his back, Kurt hasn't stopped thinking about the way he had left. He had spent the afternoon crying about the fact that Blaine didn't defend him, he hadn't showed any respect even if maybe he was actually sorry. He has suddenly realized that everything is wrong and no one's to blame.
Sebastian made a joke, which was just that; Blaine hadn't complained because he's his friend, but maybe he had done so when he whispered in Sebastian's ear. Kurt had acted like a good friend and that's why he couldn't blame him. Let's say they are all a little guilty, but no one is actually.
And still it would be too easy to blame it on someone: he has reacted badly and he didn't like that Blaine was silent as if he didn't have to rebuke his friend.
Even if Sam hadn't blamed him, Kurt feels a little guilty. Maybe he hadn't realized that Sebastian's words were just a joke and not an offense; maybe he could have avoided the attack and wait. Maybe Blaine would have rebuked Sebastian at some point for his lack of kindness.
There are so many things in Kurt's head, but he doesn't want to think too much. It would drive him crazy.
He hates everything that happened just like he hates Sam's tears in his room this afternoon. He is decided about wanting to do anything he can to fix things, if not with Blaine, with Sam at least. He'd try and make him feel better.
So while he's sitting on his made, he tries to think of ways to do that and distract Sam from the situation for a little. Suddenly though, Sebastian pops up in his head; not that Sebastian that has made fun of his friend, but the one he saw in the parking lot yesterday, eyes to the horizons, wearing that jacket that made his chest and his shoulders look—
He can't think these things, not about Sebastian Smythe, that might even share his suffering (or that's what Kurt thinks) but he is still a jerk, a slut who goes around gay bars at nights to drink and fuck (which makes Kurt shiver, but that's what the rumor at school claim) and he doesn't deserve Kurt's mental compliments.
And yet he can't deny that he has thought it, so he just stares at the ceiling until he manages to convince himself of the fact that he isn't considering Sebastian in any way. And then he remember about what Sam and he said a few days ago, which makes him laugh at how stupid it sounds; maybe because inside his head, Kurt is already considering it.
What Kurt doesn't know – and probably never will – is that in this moment, in Lima, there's a boy sitting on his bed who is thinking about the same thing; and if he'd think about it a little more intensely, he'd have probably realized that things are changing and if they feel like they're sharing the same situation is mostly because they're linked from something more.
But it's a lot easier to close your eyes and stop thinking instead of realizing what is happening.
