AN: And this is Chapter 3! I've been so busy this summer! I promise to update soon. I'm so excited about where the story is going. I also know I probably didn't get the teachers' names right, which is why I tried to avoid them. Enjoy!
CHP 3
How could she have been waiting for me to figure that out? Am I really that memorable? I hope not. Mum will be so angry with me if I get noticed by the muggles. All the lessons on how to be shy and unnoticeable should have worked! Maybe they're just being friendly said a voice in the back of my mind. Yes! That had to be it! Muggles are notorious for being overly friendly!
Now that my mind was satisfied with that explanation, I looked at the clock. It showed the time to be 4:34. Alice had probably gotten out of school, then they maybe did homework and found out I lived here, then came over. Thinking about all of her siblings made me miss Draco, Hermione, Pansy, and cousin Nymphadora, even though we never saw each other much. I hope Draco and Pansy are okay at Hogwarts, and Hermione is okay being on that trip with the Potter and Weasley hooligans. Those boys seemed to always be plotting or in trouble. I hate being here, in bloody America, while all my friends are fighting in a war, for Christ's sake!
I kicked the leg on the coffee table, my anger getting the better of me. I immediately regretted it as my toes started throbbing and the glass cracked. I pulled my wand out and cast a quick reparo on the table. Then I hobbled over to the kitchen cabinet where all my potions were, picking out the pain reliever and quickly downing it. I decided that warding all my magical items would be for the best, so I cast a Muggle Repelling Charm on the cabinet, magical school room, and my trunk. All the books on the shelves were muggle, or very close, and the dueling room just looked like any normal martial arts room with mats, a few boxing items, and a dummy. Once I finished, it was 5:30 and I was spent.
I walked into the kitchen and looked in the refrigerator. There were two ready-made meals left from what Mum had packed. I quickly picked one out, chicken, boiled potatoes, peas, and carrots. She also added a pumpkin pastrie for dessert and a jar of pumpkin juice to drink. Good ole Mum, always one step ahead. I cast a warming charm on the food and sat down at my tiny kitchen table to eat. It was quite lonely, sitting there by myself. I sighed, picking at my peas. This trip was turning out to be boring, and it was only the first day. I thought back to when Esme and Alice visited. There was something about them, their gracefulness, how their eyes were the same color, that just screamed not-muggle.
I decided to keep an eye on them. God forbid they blow my cover on the first day. Maybe I should make friends with them. They're weird, I'm unnatural. It fits. Plus, it would give me something to do with my time. With that thought, I rose from my position at the table and banished my plate and silverware. The clock read 6:03, and I was now energized from the meal. Most of the house was done, and I wanted to buy a few things in town tomorrow after school. Ugh, muggle school. Maybe I could convince Mum to forge GED document so I didn't have to go to school.
I glanced outside and noticed the sun slowly disappearing behind the trees. This would be the perfect time for a run! I quickly ran upstairs and changed into my black Nike Pro running shorts and sports bra. I threw on a loose blue tank top and shoved my running shoes on my feet. I threw my enormously curly hair into a low ponytail and checked myself in the mirror before running downstairs and to the dueling room. Once there, I picked up my iPod, courtesy of Hermione, and dug through a bag for some earbuds. They were at the very bottom, under a pack of gum and a pile of sharpies. I quickly plugged them into my iPod, setting it on my classical playlist. It always made me feel so peaceful when I ran to it. I was almost out the door before I remembered to grab my wand. I shoved it in the waistband of my shorts as I crossed the porch. Stopping in the yard, I surveyed the surrounding woods. There seemed to be a path to my left, so I took it. The forest was peaceful at this time of day, the shadows making it almost romantic. The thumping of my heart kept time with the music as I ran.
After about fifteen minutes of running, I saw an opening up ahead. I ran faster and soon came upon a huge, lush green clearing. It was as big as two football fields put together! There seemed to be a huge mound in the middle of it, almost like a pitcher's mound, but who would have a baseball field this big? I ran to where home plate would be on a normal field, but nothing was there. Turning around, I spotted a base-like white shape about fifteen feet behind me. Looking at the distance, I figured a team of Hagrids could play on this field, or a bunch of muggles on steroids.
Maybe this town has a thing for steroids?
Not likely.
I shrugged, took one last look around the field, then started heading home. I was about a quarter of the way there when the ground vibrated under my feet. I stopped and jerked my earbuds out of my ears.
Silence.
I was about to continue when a big boom sounded from the direction away from town, and my new house. It sounded a bit like thunder. Maybe thunder sounds different in America? Nevertheless, I hurried back home, checking the forest around me for danger.
Once I reached the yard, I set into a full sprint, bounding up the steps and slamming the front door behind me. My breath came in bursts as I calmed myself down. None of Voldemort's followers can reach me here. AND I'm an excellent fighter, so there is nothing to be afraid of. I jogged up the stairs to my room and dug through my dresser for pajamas. I finally found my dark blue and gold silk button up set, grabbed some undergarments, and went to the bathroom to take a shower.
The warm water calmed me as I went over the plan for tomorrow in my head.
· Go to muggle school. Be shy. Lay low.
· Eventually return to the wizarding world.
So much for a great plan. I was basically winging it. Thank god Mum had actually remembered to sign me up for Fork High School. As I stepped out of the shower and got dressed, I magically dried my hair. The ringlets framing my face stood straight up. I smoothed them down with some water and climbed into bed. It was still pretty early in America, but I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.
BLEEP, BLEEP, BLEEP! BLEEP, BLEEP, BLEEP!
That bloody ridiculous alarm clock! Why do mugs use such things?!
BLEEP, BLEEP, BLEEP!
Oh now it's just mocking me.
Silence.
Thank—
BLEEEEEEEPPPPPP!
I jumped out of bed and hit the alarm clock to make it stop going off. Finally. The sun was barely peeking through the drizzling clouds outside. Yay rain. Not that its much different than the weather in London, but it isn't home, so I'm allowed to complain.
I freshened up in the bathroom, then shuffled back into my room to get dressed. I picked out a light purple lace tanktop and black flare jeans. I shuffled around the back of my closet and finally found my long-ish black long sleeve cardigan. I put on some tiny black heeled ankle boots so my pant legs wouldn't drag in the rainwater. Yuck. I wandered back into the bathroom and put on some mascara. Luckily, I had no under the eye circles to cover up today. My face-framing ringlets were sticking up again, so I twisted them back and pinned them in place with tiny black bobby pins that were the same color as my hair. Studying myself in the mirror, I realized that the purple in my shirt made my eyes look slightly purple. It was quite cool, if I do say so myself.
Looking decent, I bounded downstairs and dug out a pack of poptarts for breakfast. I also poured a bit of pumpkin juice in a thermos for the school day. I can't imagine drinking muggle cokes or pepsis. Scarfing down the poptarts, I hurried back up to the office to grab my school bag before running back down the stairs and ouside to my truck, grabbing my keys on the way out.
The ride to school was uneventful, and very rainy. I found a parking spot by the office and ran in to get my schedule. A plump red-headed woman sat behind the desk. She looked up as I walked in.
"Hi, I'm here to get my schedule." I said. She smiled, and finished typing before looking up.
"You must be Isabella! Here is your schedule and a slip for all of your teachers to sign. You need to bring it back at the end of the day." She said, before going back to her computer. So much for a warm welcome.
I walked out of the office and parked my truck in the student parking lot. Grabbing my bag, I hopped out and strode up to the school, looking around for my first class in building 3, English. I had just spotted it when a smallish Asian guy walked up.
"Hi! I'm Eric, the eyes and ears of Forks High! You're . . . Isabella, right?" He said. I nodded.
"Yeah, but it's just Bella." I replied. His grin grew wider as I spoke.
"Ohmygosh! You're British! That's so cool!" He exclaimed. I smiled slightly.
"I guess. It's not really that amazing."
"You have to let me do a feature about you in the school paper!"
"Um—"
"Please?" He made puppy dog eyes, the kind Nymphadora makes when she wants me to let her do a makeover.
"No."
"Okayyy." Thank god. That would be a horrible thing to explain to Mum.
"Well, I've got to get to class. Pleasure to meet you, Eric!" I said, walking toward the English building. He waved goodbye and went in a completely different direction.
Getting the English professor to sign my slip was slightly awkward, as I could feel the students' eyes on me, and he made me introduce myself. However, I made friends with a very talkative girl named Jessica who reminded me of Lavender Brown, and a quite desperate boy named Mike. The classes went by fast, and soon it was time for lunch. Ah, my favorite period.
Jessica took it upon herself to walk me to her lunch table and introduced me to her friends. The only one I remembered at the end was Angela, who was a bit like Hermione personality-wise. Once we were settled, I noticed a few student coming in late. They were all pale, all gorgeous, all graceful. And who do I see walking beside a blonde, muscular guy? Alice, the pixie, that's who. She saw me watching, and gave a slight wave, twirling around to talk to the blonde guy. His eyebrows rose, and he turned to look at me, also giving a slight wave. I smiled, and was interrupted by Jessica.
"You know the Cullens?" She interrogated. I rolled my eyes.
"Actually, I've only met Alice and her mum, Esme. They came over to welcome me to Forks yesterday." I replied. The teenagers around the table gaped. "I know the rests' names, but I don't know their faces." Jessica grinned at this.
"The Cullens don't talk to, like, anyone! But I'll tell you who is who, since you're so out of the loop. You know Alice. The blonde guy who looks constipated is Jasper. The totally beautiful other girl is Rosalie. That big buffoon beside her is Emmett, and the copper-haired one is Edward. They're all like together, except Edward, of course. He thinks he is too good for any of the girls here." She said with a slight sneer.
"And when did her turn you down?" I asked. It was blatantly obvious. Jessica sputtered.
"Well—I, no . . . ugh!" She said. Angela giggled.
"He turned her down once before the dance last year, and twice before her birthday bash in September." Angela whispered in my ear. I tried to stop my smirk, I really did.
"Don't worry Jessica. We won't tell anyone else." I said, trying to be nice to the little snoot. Jessica smiled back at me. Jessica started talking to Andrea and Lauren again, while I zoned out. How could one family that isn't even related have the same color eyes, the same pale skin, and the same unnatural beauty. Maybe their father is some kind of muggle glamour specialist?
The bell rang, and Mike offered to walk me to Biology, but I politely turned him down, considering biology was just across the way from the lunchroom. When I entered, everyone was already seated. I walked up to the front, feeling all eyes on me.
"Um, Mr. Banner? I'm Bella, the new student." The professor glanced up.
"Oh! Bella, yes. You can sit there." He motioned to an empty seat beside none other than Edward Cullen. I walked over, smiling shyly at him. As I sat down, he stiffened and leaned away from me. I lifted an eyebrow at such odd behavior.
I started to say something, but the class started and I was unable to speak.
When the bell rang, I turned to speak to him, but he was already gone. So much for being polite.
The rest of the day passed uneventfully. I thankfully did not have to dress out of play in gym. As I was turning in my slip, I noticed Edward in the office, seemingly arguing with the oh so welcoming office lady. I decided to just leave them to it and slipped the paper in a box by the door.
As I was walking to my truck, a small spikey mass ran up to me. I caught her in my arms as she hugged me. Her body was freezing! Alice pulled away, grinning.
"Hi Bella! How was your first day?" She squealed, pulling me along to where I assumed the rest of her siblings waited.
"Um, fine. Very boring, but how was the air conditioning in your last class, Alice? You're freezing!" I said, concerned with why a professor would keep a classroom so cold.
"Oh, it was fine. I'm always cold!" She chirped as we neared her waiting siblings. Edward wasn't there yet. Good.
"Oh, okay then. Maybe you should bring a jacket next time, huh?" Isaid. Alice nodded, giggling as we reached the others.
"Okay guys, this is Bella! She's the one that moved in next door. Bella, this is Jasper, Rosalie, and Emmett. Edward seems to be taking his sweet time." Alice said, sweeping her hand around her siblings as she introduced them. Jasper looked pained, and Rosalie sniffed, but Emmett grinned and held out his gloved hand. I took it, shaking it. He had a very firm grip.
"Nice to meet you, Bella!" he boomed. I smiled politely, still unsure of what to say to this huge boy.
"It's nice to meet you too Emmett, and you guys too, Jasper and Rosalie." I said, nodding to the other two. They nodded back briefly as Edward suddenly showed up. Alice bounced even more.
"Geez, calm down Alice." I said. She giggled and Edward rolled his eyes.
"She is always like this. You'll get used to it." Emmett said from my right. We were facing Edward and Alice, while Jasper and Rosalie leaned against the car.
"Maybe she won't." Edward said. Alice gasped and looked up at him. I narrowed my eyes.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked. Alice glared at Edward as his eyes pierced me.
"Nothing." Edward said, stalking over to the car and climbing in the driver's seat. Alice rolled her eyes.
"Anyway, I'm actually supposed to invite you to our game night tonight. We have one every Friday! Do you wanna come?" Alice asked, bouncing again. I thought for a second.
"Uh, sure. Sounds fun!" I answered, smiling down at her. She had to barely be 5'2".
"Great! See you tonight, seven?" I nodded in agreement and waved to them as they climbed in the car. Edward squealed out of the space, almost running over me in the process.
"Hey, watch it!" I yelled, fuming. Edward just sped off, not even looking to see if he hurt me. Stupid, bloody, pale, beautiful boy.
Wait, beautiful? No. Mum would kill me if I got involved with a muggle boy.
Who says he is muggle? OH.
Guess I'll find out tonight.
