Official Disclaimer

The characters of Lieutenant Commander Steven 'Steve' McGarrett, Former Detective John 'Johnny / Jack' McGarrett, Detective Meka Hanamoa, Amy Hanamoa and Billy Hanamoa do not belong to me in any shape or form. I am merely using them for my own entertainment purposes.

The character of Detective Sergeant Danielle 'Danni' Williams probably can be considered to be mine by now. Although she was originally based on male Danny, she soon evolved becoming her own person. She has her own background, her own family, her own history and her own distinct personality. This isn't to say that the Danny Williams we all know and love is completely gone, he still emerges through her at times. I like to think of female Danni as what Danny could have been if everything in his life had gone his way. As in full custody of Grace and a decent relationship with his ex.

The character of Grace has also changed slightly due to the change in Danni. Her surname is Taylor as this is her father's surname and was Danni's married name (Danni reverted back to her maiden name when she was divorced). Her parents also are amicable which has also impacted Grace but never fear, she's still the sweetheart we know and love, if anything she's more a sweetheart now.

The character of Duncan Taylor, Detective Rory Clements, Special Agent Alexis Moss, Jeanette McGarrett, William 'Will' McGarrett, Noah Landon, Anna Lawrence nee Landon, Theresa 'Tessa' O'Donnell nee Landon, Deborah 'Debs' Landon and Michael Landon also belongs to me as does any other character who you do not recognise from the show. Please do not use them, or my version of Danni and Grace without first asking for my permission to do so.

Thank you.

Author Note

Here's the next chapter for you.

I am really enjoying writing this story.

It's fascinating writing Danny as a female because it changes everything. I wanted Danni to have a female friend, it always bothered me that the male Danny literally seemed to have no one before joining the task force, it didn't seem right so I decided to change that. Amy, Meka's wife, seemed like the perfect match. Danni was Meka's partner which means that she would have a lot to do with not just Amy but with Billy as well. Billy who would be around about the right age to be a perfect playmate for Grace.

Although the story will follow the basic plot of the pilot episode there is no way that It can be the same. Danni being a girl makes that impossible, not only will her interactions with Steve be different but her interactions with the rest of the team will as well. Not only that, but in this story Danni is the primary carer of Grace meaning that Grace lives with her. She's also softer though just as witty as the male version but because she has her daughter with her she is lacking the rage that male Danny is.

Please enjoy

Official Summary

When Danni Williams moves to Hawaii, all she wants to do is keep her head down and survive the time she had to stay there. The last thing she expected was to meet Steve McGarrett, a man who seems more intent on getting her blown up and finding out everything about her life than he is about following proper procedure. Danni has a job to do though and one way or another she is going to do it.

Chapter Four

Thursday 23rd September 2010

Honolulu Police Department

801 S Berentania Street

Honolulu

Oahu

State of Hawaii 96813

Danni leaned against the cool mirror at the back of the elevator, allowing her eyes to drift shut for a moment, focusing her attention on her breathing and keeping it steady. She could feel the tension in her body thrumming, a sure sign that unless she did something about it and quickly then she would end up with a bad headache which would have been the perfect way to end off a day which had gone steadily downhill since the morning she stepped into the police Headquarters that morning.

She couldn't remember the last time she felt so off balanced and angry.

She could remember being annoyed, since not a day went by that one of the jackasses who she worked with said or did something which upset her but being angry was a different sensation and it was one which she didn't like and needed to control before it landed her in hot water.

The urge to hit the button for the seventh floor overwhelmed her for a moment. She could picture it so clearly in her mind, storming out of the elevator and back into that bulpen and punching the Captain round his face with every ounce of strength she possessed before she turned her attention onto every Detective who had sat or stood by, smirking at her and clearly enjoying her visible dressing down.

She sighed, squeezing her eyes shut further until it almost hurt.

As much as the thought was tempting she knew that it would never happen, nor would she share it with anyone. Danni had to be careful about what she said and did. If anyone even had a hint of what went on in her mind behind her default thoughtful expression then she would find herself in a world of trouble. It was easier to let them think that she was the ice Queen that she knew the other Detective called her.

There was only three options available for her to relieve her tension. One was to call her family back in New Jersey and spend an hour ranting about her work and soaking up their sympathy and love. The second was to go out for a run, which would be impossible to do unless she brought Grace with her while the third option, which she already knew was the option she would pick, was to head out to the garage and spend time working out her anger on the old battered punching bag which Duncan had helped her hang from the rafters. It had originally belonged to her older brother but he had given it to her the moment he had heard about the move, telling her that she would need it. Clearly he had been right.

Danni opened her eyes, her gaze flickering to the numbers just as it hit the ground floor. She breathed out nosily as she pushed herself away from the wall, taking a moment to adjust the bag on her shoulder just as the door slid open. She straightened her shoulders as she headed out into the foyer, her eyes flickering around the thinning crowd thoughtfully before she headed out of the door and back into the warm sunlight, noting absently that the weather had heated up in the short time she had been away from it. She headed towards her car, thankful that she was parked near and climbed in closing the door behind her. She dropped her bag onto the passenger seat, leaning back into her chair and stuck the key into the ignition though she made no effort to turn it, content to sit there and try to figure out where she should go now that she had been dismissed for the day.

The obvious answer would be for her to drive back to her home and waste her time there until it was time for her to pick up Grace from school but the thought of sitting there and staring at four walls until it was time to leave didn't fill her with any sense of excitement, especially since everything including her chores was already completed.

Danni had no idea how people could claim to say that they were enjoying themselves when they had nothing to do. She would have given anything at that one moment in time to have a case which she could focus her attention on. She would have taken anything which was going, even if it was one of the numerous cold cases which she knew were stored in the basement. She was tempted to head down there and sign one of the files out but she knew that it would get back to the Captain who would then drag her back into his office the next day to give her yet another lecture about disobeying orders and that was the last thing she wanted at that moment in time which meant having to deal with the boredom instead.

She could always have gone to the pet store and brought everything which she needed for Mr Hoppy but she knew that Grace would have been upset if she wasn't there, handpicking the perfect cage which would no doubt have yellow in it somehow so that idea was pushed to one side.

Shaking her head, Danni reached forward and turned the key in the ignition, flipping on the air conditioning before she reversed out of her space and headed towards the barrier, waving at Jimmy with a smile and waiting for a moment for him to press the button to raise the barrier before she drove out, hesitating for a moment before a smile came to her face at the random thought which suddenly popped into her head.

She knew exactly where she could go to kill a few hours.

Danni turned the wheel to the right, pulling out into the traffic and drove for about twenty minutes until she was at her destination. She pulled into the spot which happened to be vacant on the opposite of the road from a medium sized coffee shop and killed the engine. She took a few moments gathering her stuff together before exiting the car, slamming the door and locking it, her eyes drifting up to the coffee shop sign with a smile as she read it.

Ka Pomaikai

Danni crossed the road, lifting her hand in thanks to the driver who slowed down for her and headed towards it, a smile still lingering on her face.

The coffee shop itself belong to Meka's wife Amy which was why Danni always drove out of her way to go to it so she could show support to the woman who had become one of her closest friends. The fact that the cakes and milkshakes were out of this world was merely an added bonus for her when she came here with Grace. The coffee house was one of the only places which Danni felt as though she could let her guard down in and she appreciated that more than anything.

She pulled the door open, stepping back and allowing the two older women who were leaving the shop to step out first before she entered, the door closing behind her. She stood there for a moment, allowing the soft music and familiar smell of freshly brewed coffee and baking to wash over her before a slight frown came to her face, prompted by her stomach letting out a loud rumble which reminding her with a vengeance that she hadn't actually managed to eat her breakfast that morning. Shaking her head she placed her hand over her stomach briefly and lingered in the doorway, her eyes flickering over every face, memorising them out of habit before she the bell behind her caught her attention, reminding her that she was blocking the entrance.

Danni moved forward towards the queue and joined the back of it, her eyes scanning the staff behind the counter curiously, she could see both Rachel and Bruce who tended to work the day shift and had done so for as long as she had been coming there but here was no sign of Amy. She waited until she was at the counter, opening her mouth to ask where the other woman was when she suddenly popped up in front of her from behind the counter, holding a large, unopened bag of coffee beans in her arms which she dumped on the surface, her dark eyes coming up and meeting's Danni's. Danni saw a brief flash of surprise before it was replaced by a warm friendly smile which told her without words that Amy was happy to see her.

"Hey Danni-girl" Amy said slapping her hand down on the bag before she moved swiftly round the counter, pulling Danni into a tight hug before she gently pushed her away, Amy's hands resting on Danni's shoulders as she scanned her face intently with a look that Danni was sure that the other woman had learnt from Meka. Danni never minded hugging Amy since she was only five inches taller than Danni and rarely bothered with heels which meant that sometimes they were almost the same height. She raised a questioning eyebrow when Amy made a sound at the back of her throat and shook her head. "It looks like you're having a really shitty day" Amy announced bluntly to her.

"Is it that obvious?" Danni replied with a huff of amusement as she tilted her head to one side, waiting for an answer.

"To a normal person who doesn't know you then answer would be no, you'd look as calm and serene as you always do but I on the other hand know you and I have spent the past 4 and a half months learning how to read your facial expressions and even more importantly how to read beneath your default thoughtful look and right now I can put all that to good use to know that you're mad about something." Amy told her, taking on of her hands away from Danni's shoulder so she could wave it towards her face to indicate what she meant. "Look you head off and grab that reserved table by the window. I'll grab you a mocha and a slice of chocolate cake because right now you seriously look like you need it and I'll join you over there in a moment, I can take my break now. Rachel and Bruce can easily handle anything which comes up."

"You've read my mind Amy, a slice of chocolate cake is exactly what the Doctor ordered" Danni answered with a grin before she turned and headed away from her friend towards the table Amy had selected, weaving through the other tables and dumping her bag onto one of the squishy chairs. She shot the young couple who had been approaching it an apologetic smile before turning her attention back to her bag. She unzipped it, searching through it for a moment before her fingertips brushed her cell phone, smiling she fished it out and glanced down at the screen to see that she had two text messages. Making a humming noise at the back of her throat, she lowered herself into the seat which allowed her to see the whole of the room and began writing out a response to the text from her older sister.

She had just finished and pressed the sent button when a large mug of mocha was placed in front of her on the table.

"There you go Danni, one large mocha with a hint of extra chocolate in there for you just like what your Doctor ordered" Amy announced brightly as she took the seat opposite her and placed her own mug on the table just as Rachel arrived holding two plates of chocolate cake which she deposited on the table. "Thanks for that Rai" Amy said, smiling up at her employee. "I'll be here if you need me but only if there's a massive emergency" She stated. Rachel nodded at them, her dark eyes moving between the two of them.

"Not a problem Amy, Bruce and I can deal with everything while you're on your break" She responded before she turned and headed back to the counter to help Bruce with the growing line. Amy smiled before she turned and focused her attention on Danni

"It's a good thing that you decided to come now, I only got to work about an hour ago" Amy stated, going on to explain when she caught sight of Danni's surprised look. "There was some sort of problem at Billy's school. Apparently his form tutor had to call in sick so they rang the parents asking whether the kids could be delivered to school an hour later than they normally were so they could attempt to locate a supply teacher for them. You would think that they had some sort of backup plan in place for when something like this happens. I mean teachers are people as well, they are going to get sick. There should have been someone available to step in but apparently there wasn't. Needless to say there were a lot of pissed off working parents dropping their children off before having to run to work themselves. The whole thing was a mess which could have easily been avoided" Any commented on a sigh as she shook her head. The sound causing Danni to smile at her.

"I can well imagine" Danni replied lightly before she leaned back in her seat, shooting Amy a knowing look. "Why do I get the impression though that you were right in the middle of those annoyed parents stirring them up further? I know you Amy, you just can't help yourself sometimes" She stated with a grin.

"You're damn right that I was right in the middle of it all Danni girl" Amy answered with a shrug at her, her eyes twinkling mischievously in the overhead light. "I am a leading member of the PTA after all, I'm pretty sure that it's in my job description to mess things up for the school when they are in turn messing things up for us. However" she said, waving her hand to the side as though she was brushing the conversation away. "The good news for you is that I am all yours now, so feel free to bitch and moan to me about whatever it is which is pissing you off so much my friend, and do me a favour and don't try and say that you're not pissed off because we both know that you are. It's written all over your face, or at least it would be if your feelings actually showed on your face which reminds me while I think of it, I must make a memo to myself not to let Meka ever play against you in anything which requires someone using a poker face. I get the feeling that he would lose every time if we did." She remarked using the spoon she was holding as a pointer.

Danni laughed, shaking her head at her friend.

"Well considering that I don't actually play games that required betting more than sweets I think you and Meka will be safe" Danni remarked dryly. "As for me denying that I'm pissed off, well that's not going to happen today because I am really pissed off." She stated, leaning forward in her chair and picked up her mug, blowing down on the hot liquid.

"Well that's going to save us a lot of time then if you're not denying it for once. So come on, tell me what happened to make you look like that. Has something happened at work? Is it Gracie, is she okay?" Amy demanded, her dark eyes becoming concerned at the mention of Danni's daughter.

"There's nothing wrong with Gracie, Amy, she's fine as far as I know and I'm guessing considering the time that she would be in class right now." Danni answered instantly, placing the other woman at ease. It was no secret how fond Amy had become of Grace, thinking of the small girl as a niece. "I saw her this morning anyway when I picked her up from Duncan's and took her to school and she was definitely fine then."

"Why did you take Grace to school, I thought Duncan always kept his schedule free in the morning to take Grace to school or at least to be available in case you needed him to take her" Amy said, sounding surprised. She had only met Duncan a couple of times but that had been enough to build an impression that the older man was dedicated to his young daughter and extremely fond of his ex-wife still which was enough for Amy to be willing to give him a try which had been a relief to Danni since once Amy had made up her mind about something it was almost impossible to dissuade her from it.

"He wanted to take her but his boss rang saying he had to do a meeting and it was this morning so there was no way form him to get out of it." Danni explained, taking another sip of her drink before she looked up suddenly, her mouth quirking up into an amused smile. "Want to hear to latest about what my ex-husband has done?" She asked.

"I most certainly do though I won't lie there's a part of me that is ever so slightly concerned by what you're about to tell me" Amy replied with a raised eyebrow, her hands cradling her mug.

"There's no need to be concerned" Danni assured her, taking her hand away from her own mug long enough to wave it around her. "Duncan has gone and bought our daughter a small white rabbit which Grace has decided to name Mr Hoppy and who she is clearly already besotted about if her level of concerns over Mr Hoppy having the perfect home is any indication to go by."

"Mr Hoppy?" Amy responded, her mouth slightly open with a look of disbelief.

"Mr Hoppy" Danni confirmed "And even better, because Duncan was worried that Grace would miss Mr Hoppy while she was at my house he has graciously said that Mr Hoppy can live with me and Grace since me since Grace obviously spends the majority of her time at my home."

"Oh my god" Amy said, making no effort to hide the amusement from her voice. "Did he tell you this when you saw him this morning or was it Grace?"

"Grace via text which reminds me that I need to have another talk with my daughter about limiting the amount she uses her phone when she's at school. I didn't even want her to have one yet but Duncan thought it would be safer if she did." Danni said with a slight frown.

"He does have a point" Amy said with a shake of her head before continuing on with their former topic of conversation. "So what you're actually telling me is that you and I and Billy didn't actually have to spend all of last Saturday searching through the various toy stores on the island to find the perfect large pink bunny because your ex-husband had already taken care of the issue."

Danni remained quiet for a moment, clearly considering Amy's comment before she nodded.

"That's pretty much the gist of it" She agreed before she sighed. "At least we have the space to keep Mr Hoppy though it safe to say that he will be far away from my vegetable patch. They are just beginning to come through and the last thing I want is a hungry little rabbit getting to them"

"There is that, remind me to strangle Duncan on the rare next occasion I see him though for the pain he put me and Meka through. I had to tell Billy for the rest of the day that we weren't allowing him to have a pet until he was at least nine or ten and was responsible enough to take care of it himself." Amy commented with a roll of his eyes.

"Well I won't give him any warning" Danni promised with a small smile.

"So I can see why that would have annoyed you slightly since I know that you prefer Duncan discussing things like this with you instead of just going out and doing them and then informing you afterwards but that's not what has placed that look on your face is it?" Amy asked, her dark eyes narrowing slightly in thought. "Because the look you are spotting now isn't 'my ex is sometimes an idiot who I can throttle; it's your 'I'm ready to kill the next person who even looks at me funnily because I'm so pissed off look. So what has happened to put that look on your face?" The older woman probed thoughtfully.

Danni leaned back in her chair so she could see past her friend, her eyes flickering around her to make sure that no one was paying any attention to their conversation before she leaned forward again, lowering her voice so that Amy had no choice but to lean forward as well to hear her.

"Meka and I have been removed from the John McGarrett murder case" Danni told her bluntly, moving back and picking her fork from the table and stabbing it into the waiting cake. She tore a chunk off and placed it in her mouth, giving Amy time to digest the news she had just imparted, knowing that as a cop's wife she would know a lot more about the case then she would let on to anyone. She made a humming sound at the taste of the cake, swallowing it down quickly before she spoke. "Man this is good Amy, one of your bests" She praised, eagerly tearing off another chunk and placing it in her mouth, barely resisting the urge to shovel it in.

"Thanks, it just came out the oven a short time ago so it should still be warm and gooey" Amy told her, a distracted tone to her voice before she lifted her own fork up, using it to jab towards Danni as she spoke. "Okay, call me stupid or whatever but I don't understand what you mean. When you say that you've been removed off of the McGarrett murder case do you literally mean that you're no longer on the case or is it cop language for something else because I know you guys have your own different language and stuff and something which can be really obvious actually means something completely different."

"No, this time it means what you think it means" Danni answered with a shrug, watching as Amy placed her fork on her plate as though she didn't want the distraction of holding it.

"Why the hell would they take you and Meka off the case? The last time Meka spoke about it he said that you knew exactly what had happened and were in the process of trying to bring the killer into justice. Isn't bringing someone new on the case just a waste of time?" Amy demanded, sounding peeved on their behalf.

"Well apparently the progress we were making wasn't enough to satisfy John McGarrett's son" Danni remarked, tapping her fingertips against the side of her mug.

"John McGarrett's son?" Amy repeated, her eyes widening again. "You mean the Navy Seal guy?"

"John only had the one son as far as his records show" Danni responded with a shrug.

"So what? Does that mean he's here in Hawaii? Because I thought that he was somewhere else doing God knows what" Amy asked, ignoring Danni's comment.

"Oh he is here alright. I had the pleasure of meeting him for the first time earlier at John McGarrett's home" Danni stated, jabbing her fork back into the cake again with more force then she had used before, an action which Amy clearly picked up on.

"So what exactly happened between the two of you at that meeting?" The dark haired woman asked cautiously, her eyes fixed on her friend.

"Well he went and took his father's case as his own" Danni said.

"How could he do that?" Amy demanded, "I know he's probably some big shot in the Navy doing God only knows what but surely he can't just step into a police investigation and take over. Surely you have to be in the police to do that?" She queried.

Danni snorted in response, dropping the fork onto the plate and slowly brushed her hands together in a deliberate movement, composing herself before she began to answer.

"Normally you would be right with that assessment. The only person who can technically take a case away from Detectives is the Captain which of course in our case is Hookano. However Commander McGarrett is considered special."

"Special?" Amy said with a raised eyebrow.

"Well for example he is friendly enough with the Governor of Hawaii to have her personal cell number on his phone and she seems fond enough of him to bend over backwards to give him anything which he may want. She also gave him his own taskforce and the ability to do what he wants so of course the first thing he does is take his father's case as his own because somewhere along the line he had clearly suffered a head injury because he actually seems to believe that he can do a better job running a police investigation than Meka and I can. He can't by the way" Danni went onto say, trying to keep her frustration contained as she continued. "Because I've seen his background or at least the parts which weren't redacted and there is nothing in his history which indicates police knowledge of any kind but that small fact doesn't seem to bother him at all because clearly Commander McGarrett is a man we should obey"

A silence followed her words which was broken by Amy emitting a long whistle, her eyes widening in surprise.

"I don't think I've ever seen someone manage to get under your skin quite like this Commander has managed to do" Amy remarked in surprise before she shook her head. "Did you hold onto your temper or did you slap him or knock him the hell out because I think from the sound of it you would have reasonable cause to."

"I didn't do anything but trust me the urge was there" Danni admitted with a shrug. "But we both know how precarious my position is there, Hookano would love to get rid of me to another department if he could and I can't afford that, not when Homicide pays the best wage. I have Gracie to think about after all. What if I had punched McGarrett and he made an official complaint against me? I would have been suspended or even worse fired and then what would we do. I would have to sell the house because I can't afford the payments without my wage and I can't ask my family for more money because they would give it to me but at what cost? We would have to move back in with Duncan which would end up confusing Grace and I don't want that to happen. She loves our home, it would literally kill her to have to leave. Grace needs stability after the last six months and I would endure anything to make sure she got it."

"I know you would, I just wish you didn't have to endure quite as much as you do" Amy said on a sigh before she straightened in her chair. "So enough about cute rabbits and dickhead Navy Seals tell me what brings you to my humble place of employment at this time of day?" She asked curiously. "I mean don't get me wrong, I'm always glad to see you but normally you come towards the end of the lunch time rush and stay only long enough to grab something before you are gone again, not only that but my husband isn't with you which is equally unusual unless he's waiting in the car?" She said.

"He's back at the office working on something separate for Hookano" Danni explained. "As to why I'm here well…" she hesitated for a moment, reaching up and rubbing the back of her neck. "Hookano has gotten it into his head that I am solely responsible for Commander McGarrett deciding to take charge of the Governor's personal taskforce so as a punishment he has sent me away from the office for the day with strict instructions not to re-enter the precinct until tomorrow when I'll be allowed back to my desk, handed a new case and expected to solve it."

"Please tell me that you are joking and your boss didn't send you away like you were a naughty child" Amy said, snorting when Danni shook her head at her. "Oh my god, I swear to god that Captain of yours is a grade 'A' dickhead" she stated bluntly, her eyes flashing with anger on Danni's behalf. "You know Meka told me that the majority of the Detectives in your unit treat you like shit just because you're a woman and happen to come from the mainland. I mean as if it really matter where you are from or what body parts you were born with. Surely the whole point of being a Detective is to solve the case and put the bad guys in jail away from the rest of society?"

"That's generally what a Detective does" Danni agreed dryly, resisting the urge to roll her eyes when Amy continued with her rant.

"I seriously don't know why you put up with their behaviour Danni, you should go above Hookano's head and make a complaint against them. Anything would be better than just sitting back and allowing them to do this to you, especially when you don't deserve any of it. It's not like you can help your gender or the fact you were born in New Jersey." She said with a shake of her head.

"I was actually born in Vermont but that's beside the point" Danni remarked mildly before sighing. "I appreciate you jumping to my defence Amy but I'm okay at the moment, as much as I hate to admit it this sort of behaviour is common in the Police force. If I go ahead and make a complaint about the whole department then it will swiftly turn unbearable for me because then I'll lose the handful of people in my department who actually treat me like a human being. I can't afford to lose them and turn them into enemies" She explained.

"But…" Amy began to say, stopping when Danni held up her hand at her.

"There is nothing going on at the moment that I can't deal with. I cut my teeth as an Officer and then a Detective in New Jersey. If I can survive there then I can definitely survive here. When the time is right then I'll show them exactly what I can do but until then I just have to keep my head down, my mouth shut and make sure that there is nothing about my work that they can criticise. This whole act they are putting up is just them being threatened and acting out about it like kids do. I find that several men over a certain age don't like the knowledge that a woman is doing a better job than they are. Add the fact that the woman is a Ha'ole from somewhere as far away as New Jersey who has dared to move to their island and live here doesn't exactly endear me to them. If this is like any other case I've seen then they'll soon get bored and find someone else to target when they realised just how little I care about their opinions. The biggest shame is that if they actually put all the time they put into me onto their work then their solve rate would go through the roof and everyone would be happy" Danni stated dryly as she took another long sip of her drink.

"I guess so, just do me a favour and let Meka know when you're going to let down your mask and then them see the real you because I would love to see it and he can record it for me" Amy remarked with a smile.

"That I can do, when I know the time is right I'll give Meka enough warning to grab the camera and go." Danni promised with a smile of her own.

"I knew there was a reason I liked you Danni" Amy commented.

"I thought you liked me because I normally help you with your baking at the weekend and I look after Billy at least twice a month so you and Meka can have date night?" Danni said with a raised eyebrow.

"Well those are two of the reasons" Amy agreed before she nudged her foot against Danni's "So if you aren't allowed back in the office then what are you planning on doing? There's still a while until school pickup. You going to head home?"

"I haven't thought that far yet, it took me long enough to make the decision to come here" Danni admitted with a shrug. "I'll probably finish this drink and then head home and check to see that I have everything which I need for mine and Grace's girlie night in, I may have to pop out again and get some junk food for us because there is no way you can have a girlie night in without some. My sister would kick my ass if she got to hear about it" she said with a laugh.

"When am I going to meet your sister, she sounds like a cool lady to know" Amy remarked. Danni thought about it for a moment before shrugging.

"Not for a while, last time I spoke to Cait she was talking about some big project they were just starting which was going to take up a lot of her time. Don't worry though when she does come I'll make sure that you are one of the very first people she is introduced to." Danni promised.

"If we know in advance then we can throw her a BBQ or something" Amy suggested before reverting the conversation back to their previous topic. "So what are you and Grace going to watch tonight then? Something new?"

"No, it will be a Disney film which we have seen a hundred times before so she can tell me about how she's been and how yesterday with Duncan went"

"Hopefully she had a good time with him" Amy remarked leaning back in her chair.

"She always does, whatever faults my ex-husband has being a bad father in not one of them, he's an amazing one and Grace adores him" Danni replied as she glanced around her "You know it's not surprise that this place is always packed with people. It's definitely the best coffee which I've had since moving out here, it may even be better than the coffee I had at home in New Jersey"

"Well that right there may actually be the biggest compliment which I've received" Amy told her with a laugh. "Though I'm hurt that you have clearly been to other coffee shops other than mine since being here though I guess I can forgive you since you like mine the best. I always make sure that you have the best and freshest coffee though Danni, only the best for my makamaka after all" She stated with a wink and a grin.

"Okay seriously now makamaka? What does that even mean in English? It sounds like something which would be used as a name of one of the main characters in a children show" Danni said with a raised eyebrow "You and Meka are exactly the same you know that? Is this your way of trying to make me learn your language?" She asked suspiciously, a smile softening her words.

"Perhaps it is, perhaps it isn't. What you're pissed off about is the fact that it's working, don't think that I didn't notice the Hawaiian dictionary that was in your bookcase the last time I visited and don't even try and blame it on Grace because she has a kid version, I know this one is yours." Amy responded, an undercurrent of triumph to her voice which made Danni roll her eyes.

"Neither of you will ever be able to prove it" Danni said with a laugh before she changed the subject. "That reminds me are we still on for the beach followed by a BBQ at yours in a couple of days because I mentioned it to Grace today in the car and she was pretty excited about being able to see you all. Apparently your husband has promised to help her and Billy build the best and biggest sandcastle which the state of Hawaii has ever seen before in its history." She remarked.

"So I've been told by both my son and my husband repeatedly over the past week since we decided to do it" Amy said with a smile. "Everything is sorted though, all you need to do is to get to our house by ten in the morning. You can leave anything that you and Grace don't need straight away there and then we can get in the jeep and drive to North Shore for some beach fun. We can bring a picnic basket with us since the BBQ won't be until the evening. You're welcome to share ours or bring your own, I know how fussy Grace is when it comes to eating certain food. We'll stay on the beach until about five before we go back to mine and Meka's place. I've told the others to get here for seven so it will give Meka time to set up the grill and get it heated up. I was thinking that you and Grace should sleep over. That way once Grace is asleep you can let your hair down and have some fun, fun which may or may not include an alcoholic beverage of some kind. I mean you do remember what that is right Danni girl?" Amy queried, going onto explain when Danni raised a questioning eyebrow at her. "What fun with someone who is above the age of seven is right?"

"I'm well aware of what fun with other adults is like Amy" Danni retorted before she gave a slight smile, a thoughtful look on her face as she considered the offer. "Let me have a think about it tonight and I'll let you know tomorrow whether Grace and I will sleep over. Grace normally prefers sleeping in her own bed after a tiring day but she may not be too bothered if it's at yours. I'll probably just pack some clothes and put them in the trunks and then if we do stay then we have the stuff with us ready." She stated.

"I'll make the assumption then that you are going to stay and make the spare room up for you. The bed is easily big enough to fit the two of you in without one of you having to sleep on the sofa or the floor" Amy responded, before she leaned back in her chair, pinning Danni with a thoughtful look. "You know Danielle that Meka is inviting quite a lot of his old colleagues and school friends to this month's BBQ, friends who you haven't actually had a chance to meet yet. It would be good for you to meet some of them. You never know, you may hit it off with them and it be nice you know to have someone to talk to other than me who is in the police or other agencies on the island. There was plenty of nice people out there who have a simple 9 to 5 job like I do. Maybe you'll even meet a guy who you like. I mean it's time you got back into the saddle. I know your divorce with Duncan has only really just been issued but the two of you were separated long before that so there should be nothing holding you back now. Just do me a favour and give someone a chance if you like them rather than closing yourself down emotionally and putting your defensive barriers up"

Danni breathed out slowly, biting down on the comments which were trying to escape, comments which would do no one any good. She knew that Amy was only trying to be encouraging in her own way because she cared. Holding onto that thought tightly, she met Amy's concerned eyes head on and spoke

"Amy, the two of us have spoken about this before. My only concern at the moment is Grace and making sure that she is adjusting well to all the changes we forced on her" She said softly, placing her hands in her lap and interlocking her fingers tightly together.

"I know, I know" Amy said with a sigh, holding up her hands in a peaceful sign. "I'm not saying you should marry the next man who asks you out on a date or anything or that anything should be placed before Grace's welfare and happiness but you still deserve some happiness for yourself. Besides it would take a brave man to get through mine and Meka's vetting process when it comes to you but still if someone asks maybe you should think about saying yes. You're a beautiful woman Danni and you're still young. You deserve to have something more in your life other than being a great mom and a Detective. You deserve as much fun and happiness as anyone else, hell in my eyes you deserve it more than everyone else."

"You're a good friend Amy Hanamoa" Danni said after a pause, swallowing hard against the sudden lump in her throat. "I promise that I'll think about what you said okay?" She said, waiting until Amy nodded before she swiftly changed the subject to Amy's son Billy, knowing that it would side track the other woman away from her crusade to get Danni back on the dating scene. Luckily for her it worked as Amy eagerly began telling her about Billy's talent when it came to painting and how his teacher wanted to display some of his work in the upcoming school exhibition.

Twenty minutes later, Danni drained the last of her drink and placed it beside her empty plate on the table with a sigh as she absently rubbed her stomach.

"I think it's probably time for me to head out now Amy" She told her other woman, resting her hands on the arms of her chair and pushed herself up onto her feet. She leaned down, picking her bag up and shoulder it. "I've got to get home and check what's in the cupboards and see whether I do need to make a run to the supermarket before getting Grace"

Amy nodded, coming to her own feet as well and moved round the table, pulling Danni in for a quick hug.

"No problem, give me a call later on when Grace is in bed and we'll finalise all the details for Saturday okay?" She commanded waiting until Danni nodded against her shoulder before she let go and took a step back.

"I will do" Danni promised her. "Thanks for the cake and the mocha and for listening to me moan about my job yet again, I really appreciate it" She said, moving towards the door to the shop aware of Amy following her.

"I'm pretty sure that listening to you moan is in the friendship manual so you're safe there. You can talk to me about anything, anytime. You know that" Amy replied with a warm smile. "God knows you listen to me rant away your fair share of times. Be careful driving home okay? The sky looks like it's about to open up. Hopefully you're enough of a mainlander still that you have an umbrella in that bag of yours for situations like this." She commented, waving a hand up toward the heavy looking sky.

"There's no fear of me not being anything but a mainlander for a long time to come" Danni replied mildly, giving Amy one last smile before she hurried out of the shop and across the street to her parked car. She unlocked it, climbing in and shutting the door just as the heavens opened and the rain began pounding against her car. Sitting there for a moment, she listened to the raindrops before she made a huff of amusement at the back of her throat. "This island is something else" She murmured to herself as she turned the key in the ignition and pulled slowly away from the kerb, making sure that she paid extra attention to the slick, crowded roads.

She came to her house without any incidents, grabbing her umbrella from the passenger foot well and pushed the door open after a deep breathe, instantly raising the umbrella before she ran towards her the closed gate, pressing in the entrance code on the pad beside it before getting back into the car. She waited a second before pulling into a drive making a mental note to herself to close the gate when the rain eased off. Sighing, she killed the engine and stepped back out of the car, her umbrella raised above her again as she quickly locked it, heading up the driveway towards the entrance of her house.

"Seriously crazy weather" She murmured to herself as she opened her bag and searched through it, pulling out her keys when she felt them. She glanced up at the front of her house stopping in her tracks when she saw Steve McGarrett leaning against the side of her front door, being protected from the rain by the protruding roof. She watched him in silence for a moment, listening to the sound of the rain bouncing off her umbrella as she wondered what he was doing there at her house and how he had even got to her front door considering she had a closed gate and walls surrounding the property. "You seriously have it in for me don't you God, why else would you have placed someone like Steve McGarrett in my life in not to punish me."

Setting her shoulders with her house key in hand, Danni continued making her way up the path to her home, her eyes fixed on the still man in front of her. She had no doubt in her mind that he was aware of her and probably had been since the moment she turned her car into the road. She had heard from various members of her family that Special Forces were given training to enhance all of their senses. The Commander would have heard her heels against the pavement, no doubt heard her brief stop when she had seen him and heard the exact moment she resumed her journey towards him.

Danni met his eyes when he tilted his head to look at her, noticing that they looked bluer then they had done earlier at his father's place or the Police precinct.

She forced the thought away and instead focused her attention on the one thought which was concerning her the most. How had the Commander found out where she lived exactly? It couldn't have been from anyone in the bulpen because none of them knew where she lived and she had neglected to update her address with the HR department, leaving it listed as Duncan's address. There was only one person in her Department who knew where she lived and that was Meka and she knew that he would never give that information out without asking her first, especially if the person asking was a stranger like Steve McGarrett.

There was no doubt though that he was standing there waiting for her. The fact that he slowly stood straight at the sight of her was enough to tell her that. For a moment she considered the possibility of arresting him for being on her private property but quickly pushed it away knowing that he would somehow come up with a completely reasonable explanation for it.

"Commander McGarrett" Danni remarked as she came to a stop beside him, tilting her head back slightly so she could still watch him.

"Detective Williams" He responded politely, nodding his head at her as though they had just met in passing on the street rather than him standing outside her home. She shook her head in response, ignoring him as she lowered her umbrella, shaking out the excess water before resting it against the wall. The rain storms in the area never seemed to last long unlike when she had been living in New Jersey which meant that the umbrella would quickly dry if she left it where it was. "You know, I didn't even know that they sold large umbrella's like that in Hawaii, giving the weather here it seems pointless" He said suddenly, a thoughtful note to his voice which had her looking towards him.

"Says the man who was clearly caught in the rain storm" Danni remarked neutrally as she placed her key into the front door and opened it, wiping her feet on the welcome mat before she stepped inside, turning round to face him. "Excuse me a moment" She stated before closing the door on him. She crossed the small hallway to her security system and tapped in the number. She stood there for a moment after the light had turned green, her eyes closed as she breathed in the flower scented air wondering whether she could get away with leaving the Commander outside but she knew it was pointless. He would simply find a way in. Moving back to the door, she took a deep breath and opened it, slotting her body into the small space and spoke. "If you want a large umbrella then I suggest that you head down to the Boulevard and try one of the tourist shops there, they are bound to have one" She told him, surprised to see a sudden glint of what looked like amusement coming to his gaze

"I lived on the mainland for years Detective so I have an umbrella of my own, Maryland was definitely a place where one was needed." He replied.

Danni blinked, surprised that he had mentioned something like that to her, it could almost have been considered personal, something which she would have assumed was out of character giving his background though she had to admit to herself that it was probably too early for her to really tell.

"So I read in your file" She commented after a pause. "It should hardly have been surprising to you that I had one. I'm sure by now that Captain Hookano and the other Detectives have already informed you countless of times that I'm not a native of the island and as you've said yourself an umbrella isn't essential for living here" She remarked before her eyes narrowed slightly. "Putting that to one side though, I'm sure you aren't here to discuss umbrellas with me Commander so how about you tell me the reason why you broke into my property."

"Is this how you tend to greet everyone who comes to pay you a visit Detective?" He asked, his eyebrow rising as though he was genuinely curious to hear what her answer would be. She frowned slightly as he took a step towards her so he was well within her personal space but made herself stay still, curbing the impulse to step back, a step back which would have given him enough space to slip through the gap into her hallway.

"Actually no, I'm normally the perfect hostess to people who I've invited to my house. Funny thing is that I don't remember extending you an invitation earlier or even telling you where I lived because that's the sort of information which I don't tend to give out to strangers, especially strangers who clearly climbed over my gate to gain access to my closed property" She responded, tilting her head to one side. "So I'm not going to ask you again. Either tell me why you are here or leave. There should be no reason why you are here, you already have all the files which I made up for the case. The barcodes which you need to provide CSU to gain access to the evidence is clearly marked as well. Just head into their building and show it to them though you obviously already know that given that you are an expert on police investigations so what is it?" She asked, her grip tightening on the door frame as a wall seemed to crash down over his features, leaving the man who she had encountered before.

"I spoke to your captain after you had left the office earlier" McGarrett remarked, leaning his arm against the wall to the side of the door as he moved his head closer to hers. "And he told me that you had made a request for a wiretap on a man called Fred Doran early this morning around seven thirty. I asked Hanamoa about it but he didn't seem to know anything about it. He didn't tell me much but what he did say was that the request could only have come from you because he was working on something else for your Captain at that time. There must have been something about this man which caught your attention to make the request in the first place and I want to know why because there is no explanation I can see in the file as to why you would have." He commented, his blue-hazel eyes boring into hers with a looked which made it perfectly clear to her that he was determined to get his answers and would be going nowhere until he had them and was satisfied by it.

Danni remained quiet for a moment as she searched his eyes, reading the look of resolve in them before she looked away with a sigh, absently biting down on her lower lip as she considered her options.

The last thing which she needed or wanted at that moment in time was to have a conversation about her job on her doorstep where there was a chance, however tiny that chance may have been, that someone in the neighbourhood could have overheard them speaking. She had tried to keep her job quiet from the people she met knowing instinctively that they would be the kind of people who would ring her buzzer at all times of the days which tips or wanted her help with a ticket of some kind.

She wanted their home to be a safe and comfortable place for Grace and one way she could do that was by leaving her job and everything that it entailed at the office so that when she was here with her daughter she could give her all the time she needed.

Danni glanced back at him, unsurprised to see him looking at her with the same watchful expression as before.

"You had better come in" She said on a sigh of defeat, stepping backwards and opening up the door to allow him to move past her, she glanced out at the driveway, scanning it for a moment before she closed the door and turned round, surprised to see that McGarrett had slipped off his muddy boots and left them on the mat. She saw him looking around him curiously, his eyes lingering briefly on the vase of flowers she had on the side table before he looked at her. She quickly slipped her shoes off and moved passed him, glancing over her shoulder as she spoke. "This way please" she stated, leading him down the hallway and into the last room of the left.

She moved across the living room towards her large cream leather sofa and dropped her bag on it before lowering herself down as well. She remained quiet as McGarrett moved around the room, his eyes flickering over everything clearly taking it all in. He stepped towards the mantel piece and picked up one of the picture frames which littered it, looking down at it. She knew which one he was looking at. It was a recent one taken of her and Grace at the last Hanamoa BBQ. The pair of them were grinning at the camera as they hugged each other, both looking happy and relaxed. It was one of Danni's favourite pictures of the two of them. Any time she found herself longing for New Jersey she would look towards that picture, see her daughter's happy suntanned face and know that she made the right decision even though it had been the hardest one she had to make.

"I'm guessing that this is your daughter?" McGarrett commented, breaking the silence between them as he turned to look at her with a questioning look. Danni stayed quiet, biting down on the inside of her mouth to stop the sarcastic comment wanting to escape. Instead she simply nodded at him before she spoke.

"Yes" She replied, not offering up any further details to him, the less he knew about her and about Grace the better it was in her eyes. McGarrett waited as though he was expecting her to say something else but she didn't, simply watching him. He frowned slightly at her before he spoke.

"You're very sensitive about her I see" He commented dryly, turning his attention back to the mantel piece and placing the picture back into the same spot it had been, adjusting it slightly so it was straight. "She looked like you minus her colourings. Your daughter is a very pretty girl" He told her. Danni blinked, tilting her head to the side as she tried to figure him out.

"Thank you, she is" She said finally when the silence between them threatened to continue.

"You're welcome" He replied, moving towards her as he reached into the file which he had been holding in his hand. He stopped in front of her and held up the picture of Fred Doran to her, close enough that she could see the hatred in the young man's arrogant face. "Tell me everything that you know about him Detective" The Commander demanded.

Danni sighed, looking away from Doran's picture and lifted her eyes to his face as she began to speak, her tone coming across as calm and professional.

"Fred Doran is your typical low life scum bag Commander. The type you can find anywhere in the world at any given time. He's a suspected arms dealer. According to his file which I pulled out of storage, he served two years at Maui correctional when he was twenty four for weapon possession. There's some evidence gathered on him which linked him to the murder of an American businessman who came to Hawaii last year on a trip for his work but the case fell apart though because HPD were never able to find the gun and unfortunately the whole case hinged on it. He was bailed and disappeared for a while before turning up again last year at a trailer park."

"What exactly has Fred Doran for to do with my dad's murder though?" McGarrett asked her with a frown

"Perhaps he has nothing to do with it or perhaps he had everything to do with it, I'm not sure yet" She replied, leaning forward and resting her forearms on her thighs as she continued speaking. "You see the first thing I did was to run a ballistic comparison on the bullet which CSU retrieved from the wall in your father's house. I wanted to see whether anything came up and what came up was the unsolved Doran investigation. What I think happened was that when Hesse arrived on Oahu, he or a third party got in contact with Doran to get a weapon from him. I'm sure if you dug deep enough into their backgrounds, you would find some sort of connection between the two of them, either they know each other personally or they both know some third party who placed them in contact with each other, maybe someone who Doran knew from his time at the Maui correctional. It doesn't matter how though, what matters is the fact that Hesse went to him and Doran clearly gave him what he needed. It makes sense when you think about it logically. Why risk bringing a gun with you when you can simply get a gun on the island once you've arrived. A gun which couldn't be linked back to Hesse. It's what I would have done if I had been Hesse. Hesse made damn sure that we found it back at your father's home. It was placed on the table in front of your Dad in plain view of anyone who entered the room. He wanted the connection to Doran to be made by us, I just don't know why he did when he had both the time and means to dispose of the weapon before HPD arrived." She commented, frowning to herself.

"I've seen Hesse do similar things in the past when he's done a hit on someone" McGarrett answered her. "He would have been hoping that your investigation would have shifted away from him to Doran long enough that he could make his escape." McGarrett looked around the room again, his eyes studying the artwork for a moment before he looked back at her and spoke. "So you think this Doran character would know where Hesse is hiding." He asked, watching as Danni pushed herself back to her feet, brushing her hands automatically over the skirt of her dress.

"He might not know where he is right this second but he would definitely know where he was and that is better than nothing, once you know where Hesse begun, it makes it easier to figure out where he's going" She said. "Even the smartest, deadliest criminals follow patterns whether the realise they do or not."

"Okay then" McGarrett said, slipping the photo back into the file. "Let's go and see Doran then and see what he can tell us about his role in all of this" He stated with a nod at her before he turned and crossed her living room, disappearing out of the door which led back to the hallway.

"I'm sorry what?" Danni demanded as she moved after him, following him into the hallway. "Are you actually crazy?" She asked him when he stopped walking and turned to face her. "You just took this case away from me and my partner and now you want me to go with you to Doran's address to speak to him with you? No offence Commander but why exactly would I do that? You made it clear to me earlier that you had everything well in hand with this case and my Captain also made it perfectly clear that I was to back off the case which is what I'm doing. I'm backing off of your father's case just like you wanted" she stated firmly, crossing her arms over her chest.

McGarrett watched her for a moment, his eyes flickering up and down her as though he was sizing her up. She waited, unsurprised when he spoke.

"Captain Hookano told me that you transferred in to the department six months ago in March from New Jersey PD which means that you see things that go on in a different way to the other Detective who have spent their lives here. You have fresh eyes and fresh ideas and-"

"Stop Commander" Danni said, holding her hand up at him. "Just stop okay, I don't know what you are doing but trust me when I say that I don't need a psyche analysis from you about what I have and don't have. I-" her eyes narrowed when he cut across her, taking a step towards her, a gleam in her eyes which told her that he would not be backing down from this.

"You want a psyche analysis from me Detective? Then how about this. You moved jobs from New Jersey PD where, according to Hookano, you were the lead Homicide Detective of a large team with nearly a hundred solved cases underneath your belt alone. That tells me that not only are you damn good at your job but that you have a passion for it which most people are lacking. You were respected there because apparently your old Captain and your team were gutted to lose you and you have a job waiting for you if you ever return to New Jersey. Your house here is big, probably bigger than you can afford alone so I'm willing to bet that you gave up everything to buy this house for your daughter because she clearly lives with you and you wanted her to feel as though this house could be a home for her. The fact that your house has framed pictures of people who I'm guessing are your friends and family from New Jersey tells me that beneath the mask you wear is someone who is a family person through and through so moving away from them all would have been the last thing you wanted to do, but something made you do it regardless. The only way someone like you would have moved away from everything you loved would be for your daughter, maybe she's sick and she needs the warm air or maybe there's another reason behind it. You don't have a wedding or engagement ring which means that you're divorced because you don't strike me as someone who would risk your career to have a child alone, your daughter is what six or seven and you're probably around twenty nine yourself so you had her early in life. Your ex-husband probably moved here for his job and got you both here by threatening you somehow. Whatever he said to you worked because here you are. You took a demotion in a department where you're the only female Detective so you're constantly pushing yourself to show them all that you belong in their boys club. A club which makes it clear to you on a daily basis from what I saw that they not only don't want you but that they will never want you regardless of what you do or how good you are. How exactly am I doing so far in my analysis Detective?" He demanded, crossing his arms over his chest.

Danni remained silent, watching him as she swallowed hard before she looked away from him, silently cursing her herself when she felt her eyes prickling with tears, tears she forced back by blinking hard. He spoke again, his voice just as firm thought it lacked the harshness he had before.

"I need those skills Williams, I need you with me" He said simply.

"You need me with you" She repeated, resisting the urge to cross her arms defensively over her stomach as she tried to ignore the pain his harsh analysis had caused her. She swallowed again, standing straighter, looking him straight in the eyes, she saw a flash of something in his gaze which she ignored. "You know what, its people like you Commander who makes my life impossible because you always think you know best and that you're always right when you aren't. You think you know me but you don't which tells me that for all your skills you are not a people person and that half the time your analysis on people is wrong and that makes you dangerous because the ability to read someone and to get them right first time is essential in policing. You've taken over this investigation when you know nothing about police work and that puts the whole case in jeopardy. You're so focused on the here and now that you're missing the bigger picture. If you can't focus on the bigger picture then Hesse will get away and you will never have the closure you need." She told him bluntly.

"But you do have the ability to read people and to see the bigger picture" McGarrett countered. "You were a lead Detective, people don't become the leader of a team without having the needed skills and the people ability which you think I'm lacking. I need your skills." He told her

"You might need them but you can't have them" She told him, suddenly feeling drained. "I belong to HPD and I answer to Captain Hookano and he's told me to back off this case. I don't answer to you Commander and I'm not a member of your taskforce so I suggest that you stop wasting your time with me and instead head over to the trailer park to find Doran." She answered.

"I'm afraid that you're wrong there Detective" McGarrett responded. "The Governor has given my jurisdiction over HPD and I've already made the decision to make you my partner on the taskforce. You're no longer a Detective with HPD, all the paperwork to have you transferred over to me has been signed and countersigned. Don't worry thought Detective, we're going to get along great" He remarked, nodding at her before he strolled to her front door, slipping his boots back on and left the house, leaving Danni staring after him with her mouth open.

"Son of a-"
