Official Disclaimer
The characters of Lieutenant Commander Steven 'Steve' McGarrett, Chin Ho Kelly, Kono Kalakaua, Victor Hesse, Anton Hesse, Former Detective John 'Johnny / Jack' McGarrett, Mary McGarrett, Lieutenant Catherine 'Cath' Rollins, Frederick 'Fred' Doran, Detective Meka Hanamoa, Amy Hanamoa and Billy Hanamoa do not belong to me in any shape or form. I am merely using them for my own entertainment purposes.
The character of Detective Sergeant Danielle 'Danni' Williams probably can be considered to be mine by now. Although she was originally based on male Danny, she soon evolved becoming her own person. She has her own background, her own family, her own history and her own distinct personality. This isn't to say that the Danny Williams we all know and love is completely gone, he still emerges through her at times. I like to think of female Danni as what Danny could have been if everything in his life had gone his way. As in full custody of Grace and a decent relationship with his ex.
The character of Grace has also changed slightly due to the change in Danni. Her surname is Taylor as this is her father's surname and was Danni's married name (Danni reverted back to her maiden name when she was divorced). Her parents also are amicable which has also impacted Grace but never fear, she's still the sweetheart we know and love, if anything she's more a sweetheart now.
The character of Duncan Taylor, Detective Rory Clements, Supervisory Special Agent in charge Ryan Moore, Special Agent Kale Meade, Special Agent Alexis Moss, Jeanine Landon, William 'Will' McGarrett, Noah Landon, Anna Michaels nee Landon, Theresa Law nee Landon, Deborah 'Debs' Landon and Michael Landon also belongs to me as does any other character who you do not recognise from the show. Please do not use them, or my version of Danni and Grace without first asking for my permission to do so.
Thank you.

Official Summary
When Danni Williams moves to Hawaii, all she wants to do is keep her head down and survive the time she had to stay there. The last thing she expected was to meet Steve McGarrett, a man who seems more intent on getting her blown up and finding out everything about her life than he is about following proper procedure. Danni has a job to do though and one way or another she is going to do it.
Chapter Summary
"So let me get this straight in my head Williams; you and Commander McGarrett went to the home of Fred Doran, a man who is actively wanted by HPD in relation to several ongoing and cold cases, without a warrant from a judge or even some back up and somehow, though God only knows how, managed to get yourselves invited into the trailer by the son of a bitch himself?" Captain Hookano stated, his words clipped and precise as though he had issue with even saying them out loud.

"That's the basic drift of it though Amelia Webster has already spoke to Judge Warren who has provided us with the arrest warrant for Fred Doran and the warrants we need to search his trailer more fully" Danni remarked calmly.
"After the fact Williams, Webster only got you those warrants after you rang in to tell her about it. The fact still remains that you arrested the man when every single psychological and police report we have on him has stated categorically that Doran would never willingly allow himself to be taken into custody and instead he would go down in a hail of bullets and take as many cops as he could with him when he did." Hookano stated, suddenly even more pissed off then he had done before Danni had answered him.
She tilted her head to the side, waiting for a moment to make sure the Captain had finished what he was planning on saying for the moment before she spoke again.
"That would be the case" She told him. "He let us in his home and he didn't fight when we took him into custody." She replied her mouth curling into a half smile. She knew from experience how much this whole situation would be killing her old boss. The fact that a taskforce which had barely been in place for more than a couple of hours at most had managed to bring in a criminal which HPD had been trying to bring in for at least a year if not longer must have been a kick in the teeth for the man.
"What charges are you bringing him in on" Hookano demanded, attracting her attention back to the call.
"It is more a case of what charges are we not bringing him in on" She answered, lowering her voice as she moved further away from Doran's trailer in the direction of the surrounding fence.
"How about you just give me an answer rather than getting cute on me." Hookano snapped, the comment causing Danni to raise an eyebrow at the tone. For a moment she considered hanging up on the other man, safe in the knowledge that she didn't actually have to answer him if she didn't want to but she resisted the urge. Whether she liked the man or not, Hookano was still the Captain of the HPD Detectives, getting on his bad side, especially when the taskforce was still in its infancy and finding its feet, would be a bad mistake and she knew it. They needed as mainly people on board with them if they were going to be a success.
"We have him on possession of illegal weapons but I think everyone who has ever worked his case would have expected that one." She remarked, her voice turning serious and professional. Hookano remained silent for a moment, clearly digesting the information before he spoke, all previous rage gone from his voice. For the first time since she had met him, he actually was speaking to her as though her opinion was valuable rather than something to simply be ignored and disregarded. It was an almost heady feeling though she doubted the glimmer of respect would last longer than the phone call.
"Were the guns on display?"
"Some of them were, we could see some of them which were poorly hidden but we haven't touched them yet and we won't until that warrant is physically in our hands, the last thing we want is for him to get away with anything because we were impatient" She stated, glancing over her shoulder towards the trailer.
"Good, it's a good thing you're there, god only knows what McGarrett would have done if he had been by himself there." Hookano remarked almost absently. "What about the weapons on display?"
"Well those we can touch because they were out in the open and we had been invited in. Most of the serial numbers had been scraped off of the weapons which doesn't exactly support any claim that he has that they were legally obtained through the proper methods" She commented with a shake of her head.
"We still need to be positive that the guns are illegal and he didn't do the damage once he had purchased them. Doran is a sneaky bastard as we know from past experience. He could have the permits for them hidden away ready to bring out or situations like this. The last thing we want is for this case to all apart like the last case against him did. You and your partner need to get evidence to support every charge, incontestable evidence. I want this son of a bitch behind bars for as long as humanly possible. Do we understand each other?" He told her.
"I understand the situation at hand" She replied calmly. "You haven't seen this trailer Captain, it's a goldmine of evidence. Everywhere you look there is a weapon, nearly all of them appear to be loaded and I would bet that at least a few have them have been illegally discharged recently. As for the permits I would severely doubt that anyone, even someone helping him, would give out even one permit let alone the fifty plus he would need to cover the guns out here and these are only the ones which we had seen. You can guarantee that there will be others which are still hidden from us."
"You'll have to check that out for yourself Williams. We don't have the resources here to help you go through fifty guns to check whether they have permits or not. CSU are overworked with a triple homicide which happened downtown this morning." He responded to her.
"We've got it covered" Danni responded, rolling her eyes at his comment.
"Of course you do Williams, this is you after all, don't you always have everything covered" Hookano replied with a snort. "What other charge have you got on Doran other than the illegal weapon charge because just one charge won't be enough to keep him where he belongs. He'll be granted bail with that and that's the last thing we want."
"There's a white powder on the table which looks as though its drugs. I can't test it obviously but from the feel and general look of the stuff I would hazard a guess that its cocaine. He had undoubtedly been planning on selling and distributing it." Danni remarked.
"And it was just out in the open?" Hookano question.
"Lined up on the table. I doubt he expected to have visitors, especially a visitor who had a badge and could arrest him for it." Danni responded, making a mental note to speak to some of the members in the narcotic division to see what information they could give her. She was going to have to strengthen her connection to her contacts further to make sure that the taskforce were informed of anything like this in the future rather than forcing them to rely on people like Hookano to keep them in the know.
"It will be up to the CSU team to have the powder tested. There has been certain rumours going around that there is a new kind of drug on the street which is similar in look and touch to cocaine, CSU haven't been able to get a good sample of it so if this powder is that rather than cocaine then it may help with a lot of other ongoing cases in narcotics." He stated, sounding thoughtful for a moment, no doubt running through the ways in his head that he could take the credit for the bust.
"Well I've rang dispatch and they are sending out a CSU team to our current location so they'll be able to take some samples and test it. If I know Agent Moore then he'll make sure that he has a test kit with them so they can do it right there and then rather than waiting until its back at the lab."
"As long as they do it right then they can do it any way they want to" Hookano grumbled.
"Judging from what we've gathered so far I would hazard a guess that Doran will be off of the streets for a long time. This time we'll ensure that there is no way that he can weasel his way out of the charges." She promised, raising an eyebrow when he made a huff of amusement down the phone.
"I'd almost feel sorry for him if he wasn't such a scumbag. Being on your bad side is no picnic" He remarked before his tone became more like the tone she used to hearing from him. "If you already rang dispatch then why did you ring me? What do you need?"
"It was a courtesy call" Danni said after a brief pause. "As you said earlier, some of the Detectives in your unit have ongoing cases against Doran. Once we have finished with him and our charges have been accepted then there's no reason why further charges on the cases which you are working on can't be completed at the same time. We all have the same goal here after all, ensuring that Doran ends up in a jail cell where he can rot, just like he deserves."
There was a long silence, long enough that Danni was beginning to wonder if Hookano had hung up on her, She was about to check the handset when he spoke.
"I'll speak to the Detective working on those cases and tell them to contact you if they want to take you up on you offer, which they probably will."
"That's fine, just warn them that I may not be able to answer the calls straight away if they do decide to call since we're still working on a case but that I'll get in contact with them if they leave me a message" She replied professionally. There was another silence.
"I guess you'll be the person to contact if we require anything" Hookano stated, Danni shrugged even though she knew that he couldn't see her.
"That will be up to Commander McGarrett" She told him, raising an eyebrow when Hookano snorted down the phone.
"Good luck with keeping that one in line" He replied.
Danni opened her mouth to respond when there was a click followed by the dial tone indicating that he had, for the second time that day, hung up on her without bothering to say goodbye. She breathed out and ended the call on her end, dropping her cell back into her bag before she looked up, eyes flickering around the scene in front of her. A crowd was growing on the other side of the fence, pockets of people clustered closely to each other clearly wanting to know what had happened. It didn't surprise her that they already knew that something had occurred even though only ten minutes had passed since Danni left the trailer, any rumours in small communities such as this tended to spread like wild fire.
She turned and headed up the stairs into the trailer, blinking in the suddenly shade. She glanced around, her eyes focusing on Steve to make sure that he was fine before she focused her attention on Doran, an eyebrow rising when she realised that Doran was now sat in a chair in the middle of the room, his hands still handcuffed behind him and a gag wrapped around his mouth lessening the words still spilling out to a muffled sound which could easily be ignored. His face was red but Danni was willing to bet that it was red due to rage rather than him not being able to breathe correctly.
"You gagged him" Danni remarked, looking towards Steve again. "You grew tired of what he was saying or is this just something you like to do?" She asked him casually.
Steve glanced over his shoulder at her, his hands stilling from where he was searching through paperwork on top of a nearby counter. It was impressive and almost chilling how quickly Steve had managed to put the fear of god into a hardened criminal such as Doran if the younger man hadn't even attempted to escape when Steve's back at been turned.
"He had a lot which he wanted to say and I don't have the time to listen to it all." Steve responded calmly, tilting his head to the side as he continued. "He's like you Detective, he's full of opinions about everything. I did give him the option of quietening down, even asked him politely, but he decided not to so we had to go this route. Don't worry though, he's completely fine."
"Well that might be a matter of opinion" Danni replied as her eyes narrowed at him. "As for your other comment I would prefer if you didn't liken me to any of the people who we arrest."
Steve stopped turning round to face her head on, his arms crossing over his chest as he searched her face with a slight, puzzled frown.
"I stated I didn't have time to listen to his opinions, I never said anything about not having time for yours. His voice was loud and grating which is the polar opposite of your voice." He told her.
Danni's eyes widened for a moment in surprise before she bit the inside of her lip, using the pain to focus on instead of the warm feeling which came over her at Steve's backwards compliment. She watched him as his eyes flickered around, clearly taking everything in before she spoke quietly.
"Are you telling me that you like the sound of my voice then?" She couldn't help but ask, trying to keep the tone to the question casual. Steve looked back over to her, an emotion passing over his features for a moment before they turned blank again.
"I'm saying that I prefer it to his voice Detective" He responded.
Danni made a slight sound at the back of her throat before she shook her head, trying to keep the small smile which was threatening to break free under control.
"I see" She said finally, breaking the silence which fell between them, she was aware of Doran looking between the two of them from the corner of her eyes but chose to ignore it. The last thing Doran needed was an audience of any kind.
"You were gone a while, I'm guessing you contacted everyone you needed to?" Steve asked, abruptly changing the subject, something which Danni was grateful for.
"I did, warrants are on the way so once they have been received we'll be able to move onto the next step. I spoke to CSU and they are sending out a team to us now" She answered professionally.
"So they could take an hour or so to get here then?" Steve demanded looking frustrated.
"Normally it would have but it turns out that there is a team nearby who are just finishing up a crime scene so they'll come to us next. I rang Captain Hookano as well to let him know about the arrest as well." She informed him, noting the instant heavy frown which came to Steve's face at the news.
"Why would you have rang him when the case is nothing to do with him?" Steve demanded. Danni's eyes flickered to Doran before she moved close to Steve, reaching out and wrapping her hand round his arm, using the hold to pull him further into the trailer, out of ear range of Doran though they could both still see him.
"I know the Hesse case has nothing to do with him but burning our bridges with HPD won't do us any good either" She stated quietly. "HPD have ongoing cases where Doran is the suspect, if we can add their charges to our own then not only will we have a better chance of Doran never seeing the light of day again but it also may win us some brownie points with those same Detective. If this taskforce is going to work then we need to play the long game which includes picking up allies where we can. A couple of Detective being in debt to us doesn't sound like much but trust me in the future you will be grateful for it. It's worth having to listen to Hookano go off on one of his usual rants if we get those allies" She promised him.
"Fine, but just remember that you don't have to answer to Captain Hookano anymore. You're my partner which makes me the person who you answer to. The next time that Hookano gives you grief over a decision which was mine then I want you to transfer the call to me and I'll deal with him. You can count that as my first official order to you. You're part of my team now and I take care of my people." Steve responded.
"That was your first order?" Danni asked with a raised eyebrow. "I'm pretty sure that your actual first official order for me was for me to come with you here because you decided out of the blue to make me your partner, then on the way over you officially told me not to call in for back up because you said that we had it covered. This order is actually probably your third order." She told him.
"An order is an order regardless of what position it comes in" He stated.
"I think for the time being it would make sense for you and Hookano not to speak to each other. I might not know you well yet but I can tell already that you and the Captain would probably result in an explosion which we could all do without. I'm the most qualified out of us to deal with the Police Department when we need to be in contact with them. I know how to speak their language and the truth is that you don't. If you speak SEAL to them then you'll rile them up and trust me when I say we could do without that at this moment in time." She replied, casting another look towards Doran.
"You can be the one to deal with them if you want Detective but if Hookano treats you badly again then I'll be the one who he will be dealing with regardless of what you may or may not want. I meant what I said when I said that you were a member of my team."
Danni looked down at his words. Steve sounded dispassionate, an almost absent minded quality to his words as though he wasn't paying attention to what she had actually been saying to him. She pushed down the warm feeling again when it threatened to wash over her and instead forced her mind back on the task at hand. Following down that path would only lead her to a place which would cause her nothing but trouble and that was something which she could seriously do without at that time in her life. A further complication wasn't needed.
"Right, well I'll make sure to keep that in mind the next time I speak to him" She replied briskly, looking around her.
"You make sure you do that Detective" Steve answered, something in his voice attracting her attention to him again. For a moment Danni allowed herself to stare back at him, searching his eyes before she made herself look away again and focus her mind strictly on the job.
"I requested for dispatch to send some uniforms here as well. They'll be handy when it come to keeping the crowds which are growing outside under control in case some of them decide to turn nasty" She told him, crossing her arms over her chest as she glanced towards the doorway.
"The crowds growing outside?" Steve repeated with a raised eyebrow as he hunched down beside the table, his eyes focusing on the white powder which Danni had seen earlier on. "This definitely feels like cocaine and the good quality stuff as well. For this kind of powder, you would have to drop at least a grand just to get an ounce of it. It's not the kind of product which you would expect to see somewhere like here."
"Here as in on the island or here with someone like Doran?" She asked curiously.
"Both" Steve replied simply.
"If that's the case then maybe it's the sort of thing you would give as a payment for a favour, a favour like providing a weapon which couldn't be traced back to you if you committed a crime." She stated before her tone turned curious as she continued to speak. "I'm guessing that you have some experience in identifying drugs and the quality of them?" She asked him with a tilt of her head, meeting his eyes when he looked towards her.
"You were saying something about a gathering crowd outside?" He asked her instead, ignoring her question.
"There's a crowd outside the trailer which has been steadily growing since we came in here. Clearly the news that we have arrested Doran has already spread in the area" She answered him. "Which is why I've put in the request for some uniformed officers to give us a hand with crowd control." She moved towards him stopping beside him. "We can't make the assumption that Doran was here alone, he could easily have a few men around here ready to leap in and cause trouble if Doran was ever arrested, trouble like enticing a group of already suspicious individuals into rioting with a few choice words."
"Maybe" Steve remarked as he came to his feet. "Once that warrant comes I want you and I to have first dibs on searching through the trailer rather than CSU. If there is something in here to find in regards to Hesse than I will be the one to find it. I know Hesse better than anyone now that his brother is dead. I know the way his mind works and the codes he uses when it comes to informing his followers of the details of his plans. A CSU agent would be likely to overlook something thinking that it wasn't important. If we find his coding then it could blow the case wide open and give us an idea of where he is hiding. I'm not going to lose that chance."
Danni tilted her head back so she could look into his face, her eyes scanning his features as she took in his determined expression, an expression which told her that Steve wasn't going to back down from his decision. She thought briefly about arguing with him and reminding him that they couldn't risk isolating themselves by making CSU pissed off with them on their very first day of being in action but she knew already there was little point, especially when Steve was actually right. He was the leading expert on Hesse, if there was something in the trailer which was linked in someway to Hesse than Steve would be the one able to find and recognise it.
"Okay then" Danni said softly with a single nod at him. "If you want to have a proper look around the place then we're going to have to do this the correct way because I know from experience that the minute that CSU arrive here the scene becomes theirs and they don't particularly like people who aren't one their agents or trained to interfere with them doing their jobs" She fell silent for a moment, reaching up and squeezing the back of her neck before she continued speaking, a thoughtful tone coming to her tone. "Ryan Moore is the head of CSU on the island and I know that he's on duty today and out in the field so he's likely to be heading up the team on their way to us. I'll speak to him once he arrives and explain our situation. If we're lucky then he'll give us twenty minutes in here alone as long as we follow the correct procedure. I'm assuming that you do actually know what the proper procedure when it comes to an active crime scene is? Because the last time you were at one, you didn't exactly do well. You moved evidence, touched that same evidence without gloves and threatened one of the lead Detective on the case which reminds me, we need to get your finger prints taken by CSU so they can eliminate you now since your fingerprints will now be all over your father's house." She commented, softening her words with a half-smile.
"I know all about proper procedure" He assured her. "It seems to me from where I stand that things have worked out for the best for both of us" He replied, the warm tone which she had heard him use earlier returning to his voice.
"I wouldn't be so sure that its best for both of us yet" She retorted, watching as he smiled slightly at her. There was a brief moment of silence before Steve spoke again.
"So, Ryan Moore is head of CSU on the island then? You clearly know him well if he's willing to listen to your request and would consider granting it. If it's anything like the military then heads of the departments wouldn't break known protocol for just anyone. What is he like? Is he good at his job?" Steve questioned, his smile disappearing from his face as though it had never existed in the first place."
Danni stared at him for a moment before she breathed out and rolled her eyes at the line of questioning.
"If Ry wasn't good at his job then they would never have headhunted him and offered him the position in the first place. And for the record I know what you're doing here and I'm not going to play that game. If you want to know about Ryan Moore than I would suggest you take the time to get to know him yourself." She commented, placing her hand on her hips, fixing him with a thoughtful look. "I should make one thing clear to you now before we go any further. You and I may be partners now but that doesn't mean that I'm going to start sharing things about myself with you. If I want to share something with you then I will share it with you so please don't badger me with questions about my personal life."
For a moment Steve remained silent before he spoke.
"You know you are kind of sensitive over this or perhaps what you're sensitive over is Ryan Moore?" He asked her mildly, a watchful look in his eyes when he glanced over at her. Danni opened her mouth to respond, closing it when she heard the sound of sirens and several vehicles pulling up outside of the door. She glanced over her shoulder.
"That would be CSU and the uniformed officers we requested" She stated, turning back to Steve, reaching up and jabbing her index finger at his chest. "Don't think that this conversation in regards to my privacy is over, its merely postponed until this case is concluded." She warned him before she moved passed him over to where Doran was still sitting. She stopped beside him, grabbing his left arm and used the grip to pull him to his feet. He stood, tilting his head towards her and glared at her. For a moment she considered leaving the gag in but pushed the thought away knowing that she couldn't, instead she went up on tiptoes and untied the knot which Steve had tied, pulling the material out and threw it over to Steve who automatically reached out, catching it with one hand.
"I'm going to kill the fucking pair of you and I'm going to make sure that I pay extra attention to you bitch. I'm going to take my time with you and make it as slow and painful as I can. You'll be screaming for me to grant you death by the time I'm done with you Detective and I'll make your boyfriend over there watch everything I do to you as well." Doran threatened her, nodding his head towards Steve to indicate exactly who he meant.
"You know Fred, that speech you gave us would have been a whole lot more impressive if you weren't currently shitting yourself over what is about to happen to you. You can stand there and threaten me all you want but it's not going to do you a shred of good because you're ours now, a fact which you haven't grasped yet. The only thing which you can look forward to now is life in prison and that is only after the Commander here has finished questioning you. You still have experience to look forward to" She told the younger man, shifting him round so he could see Steve clearly. "I actually feel sorry for you because I wouldn't want to be left in a room with him when he wants answers over something, especially as it would just be you and him alone in that room without cameras or support. I won't be there, I may take that time to go and get myself some coffee rather than keep him in line. You should keep that in mind" She remarked mildly before she led him across the room and out of the trailer into the bright sunlight. Two officers stood waiting at the bottom of the stairs ready to take him off his hand.
"Detective we have the warrants for you" The younger of the two officers stated holding out two pieces of paper to her. She reached out and took them, glancing down at them making sure that they covered everything which they needed before looking back up.
"Thank you for that, could you book him now that we have this" She asked them, raising her voice to be heard over the streams of curses which were pouring out of Doran's mouth when he saw all the people watching them. Each word uttered sounding more and more desperate then the last.
"Where shall we take him for questioning Detective? The holding cell back at the station?" The young man asked her, speaking again as he and the older officer gripped Doran's arms.
"Take him to the holding cells at the Ali'iolani Hale" Steve answered for her as he stepped out of the trailer and came to a stop at her side. "That is where our team headquarters will be based at" He explained.
"Of course," The elder of the two said, speaking for the first time. The two officers exchanged a quick look with each other before they turned as one and ushered the swearing Doran towards one of the waiting police squad cars. Danni watched their progress for a moment before she turned to Steve.
"The Ali'iolani Hale? Is that the building which has the statue outside of it? The one which is in King Street?" She asked him curiously.
"That would be the one" Steve answered, glancing towards her when she made a surprised sound.
"You know that's actually a really nice-looking building. I've driven past it with my daughter a few times while we've been on our way to Meka's house" She said, watching as he nodded again.
"If you're impressed with the way the outside of the building then just wait until you see inside of it Danni, especially your own office" He told her, an undercurrent of smugness to his voice which she picked up on. She ignored the tone, turning to look at him, her eyes widening slightly in surprise.
"Wait, are you telling me that I'm going to have my own office back at Headquarters? Its not going to be open planned?" she asked hopefully. She had, had a small office back at the precinct in New Jersey but that had been it, once she had moved to Hawaii that small luxury had been taken away from her. She had missed the privacy that having that small space has afforded her, just a place where she could escape to and catch her breathe or gather her thoughts together when it came to cases. The thought that she was going to have that space made her happier than she had thought possible.
Steve nodded at her, his eyes moving to her briefly before he turned his gaze back to the crowd, taking in the details of the surrounding area much like Danni had done earlier when she had been outside.
"No, it won't be open planned, we'll each have an office though yours and mine will be the biggest. At least that is what the Governor's personal assistant told me when he called earlier to confirm where we were be stationed. You see Danni, it's not going to be completely terrible being my partner or being on my taskforce. At least you'll get an office for your trouble which is more than you had with HPD." He said, looking at her with the same half smile which she had seen him use throughout the day towards her. It was a surprisingly warm and friendly smile which she hadn't seen him use towards anyone else who they had passed.
"Well that still remains to be seen doesn't it Steve" She answered him with a tilt of her head. "Though having my own office would be a blessing"
A loud beeping noise broke through their conversation and attracted her attention. She looked towards the sound in time to see a large familiar navy-blue van pull to a stop just outside the fence causing some of the watchers to move out of the way. She watched as the doors were flung open and member of the CSU team spilled out, some of them taking in the details of the scene while others headed to the back of the van, throwing the doors open and pulling out the equipment they would need.
Danni suddenly smiled when her gaze landed on the tall, white male in his early thirties who was climbing out of the passenger seat.
"That would be Ryan Moore I presume?" Steve asked.
"You would be correct" She answered, reaching up and absently running her hand over her hair. "I'll head over there and speak to him; the outside area of the trailer is already lost to us but he might still let us inside for a bit like you want. Stay here while I talk to him and please try not to throw your weight around just because we have jurisdiction over things. We need to keep both the uniforms and CSU team on our side and I think we can both agree that there has been enough drama today already without adding more to it."
"Your trust in me is overwhelming Danni" Steve replied dryly, crossing his arms over his chest and fixing her with a stern look. Danni smiled at him, remaining quiet as she turned and headed down the steps, moving to the van and the man standing by it who was clearly in charge.
Ryan Moore had been on the island for two years, he had come from Boston originally but he had been wooed to Hawaii by the offer of a big fat wage increase and the promise of working in constant sunshine with the ocean surrounding him allowing him to go surfing daily. Danni had met him at one of hers and Meka's crime scenes four months previously, they had struck a conversation up and somehow become fast friends, a feeling which had deepened every time they met each other. They had bonded over the fact that they were both Ha'oles living on an island which made its feelings on Ha'oles incredibly clear. It hadn't taken much time for them to start hanging out with each other outside of work and to realise just how much they had in common and enjoyed each other's company.
She watched as Ryan looked around him, his blue eyes moving over the crime scene with a clinical look which disappeared the moment he saw Danni approaching him.
"Hey Jersey" He called out, taking a step towards her. "You know I should have know that you would somehow be involved in this. According to the grapevine Captain Hookano is in his office literally foaming at the mouth and as far as I know there is only Detective in that department who can get him into that state by just talking to him and I happen to be looking at her right now."
"Hey yourself Boston, I just like to say for the record that I'm hurt that you would just assume that I'm somehow involved with the Captain being in a foul mood" She remarked, placing her hand over her heart and feigning a hurt look.
"You know that look doesn't work on me Danni" Ryan remarked with a shake of his head.
"Keep telling yourself that" Danni responded cheekily before she became serious again. "Besides you of all people Ryan know that I'm not responsible for anything that goes on in the bullpen, that would require the other Detectives to talk to me and we both know they barely even acknowledge me." She pointed out, dropping her arms with a sigh.
"Well that is a pretty strong argument in your defence Danni. You aren't responsible entirely for Captain Hookano's foul mood but even you've for to admit that you are probably responsible for about eighty percent of them" He responded, reaching up with his hand and running it through his thick, dark hair.
"Eighty percent might be about right" She agreed with a smile at him which he returned.
"Not that it really matters now that you don't work in the HPD Detective department anymore. You're on the brand-new Governor taskforce which has come from out of nowhere. I heard that there are quite a few people in your old department who are more than a little pissed by the fact that you were handpicked for the taskforce and given a promotion." He remarked thoughtfully.
"News really does travel quickly on this island" She remarked "I would have thought those same people would have been thankful to see me gone from their precious department, that's what they have been wanting from the moment I stepped into the bullpen the first time. Now that I'm gone it can go back to the way it was before I arrived on the scene."
"I don't think they had expected your departure from the department to be in this way. It's not a surprise to the rest of us though. Anyone who has half a brain and who has worked with or seen you on the job would know that you deserve this promotion more than anyone. Say what you will about the Commander, he clearly knows talent when he sees it."
"That's sweet of you to say Boston" Danni said softly.
"It's not sweet at all, it's merely the truth and I would know because I'm one of the poor people who have to work with each and every one of them" Ryan answered with a grin before he glanced over the top of her head in the direction of the trailer. "So, I'm guessing that the man behind you on the steps is the famous Lieutenant Commander McGarrett then?" He queried, looking back at her with a questioning look.
Danni twisted on the spot, looking towards the trailer with a slight frown.
Steve was standing exactly where Ryan had said, speaking to two uniformed policemen, both from what she could tell, were wearing identical expression of annoyance and disbelief. It was a look which Danni could completely understand since she had probably worn a similar one herself. Steve had his usual expressionless expression on his face, his arms crossed over his chest as he nodded every so often to whatever they were saying to him. His eyes though were fixed on Danni and Ryan, watching their every move intently.
"That would be him" Danni replied as she turned back to Ryan who was using sign language to say something to a member of his team standing further away. She waited until he had finished before she spoke again. "I need a favour from you Boston."
"Really Jersey? Another favour? Do I need remind you what happened the last time you asked me for a favour? These little things are beginning to add up you know." He stated on a sigh, his eyes twinkling at her.
"I hate to disappoint you Ry but it's not that type of favour, not this time at least." Danni responded, unable to keep the smile from her face.
"Well, that is a shame isn't it" he said. "So, don't keep me in suspense then, tell me what the favour do you need from me is"
"I need you to let me and Steve into Doran's trailer for a bit before you and the rest of your team head in there, we won't need long in there, maybe twenty minutes or so. I know its not the norm but I wouldn't be asking you if it wasn't important." She said, watching as his face became serious, slipping effortlessly back into the same expressions she had seen countless of times on his face when their paths had crossed at various crime scenes.
"You want to have twenty minutes in his trailer?" Ryan repeated sounding surprised as he searched her face, his face falling into a frown when he continued speaking. "Why do you need that time exactly? I don't need to tell you of all people Danni what the protocol is when it comes to active crime scenes. As soon as CSU arrive it becomes ours and remains ours until either I or one of my senior agents releases it back to the lead Detectives in charge of the case. This whole scene Danni" He stated, waving his hand around him. "Is officially mine now and I have a job to do, the same as you do."
"I know Ryan which is why I'm asking you. There is a lot of evidence in there and I can tell that you guys are gunning to get in there and start collecting it but we really need that twenty minutes. You know, we haven't even had time to secure the crime scene because we've been waiting for backup to arrive. It would be dangerous and unprofessional of me to let you and your team in without checking first to make sure it was completely safe for you all. So maybe this twenty minutes would be considered as Steve and I securing the area for you to make sure we do it properly." She told him with a hopeful smile.
Ryan breathed out, rolling his eyes before he gave her a long, searching look.
"Really, so that's how you're going to play this then?" He asked her, sounding amused before he looked back towards the trailer with narrowed eyes. "How about you sweeten the deal slightly and I'll consider it."
"Well I know that Commander McGarrett would appreciate it if you agree to let us in. He is the new leader of the Governor's task force so having someone in his position with his influence owing you a favour which can be cashed in at a later date wouldn't be a bad thing to have" Danni said diplomatically.
"Well there is that, a favour like that would be handy but it's not enough Danni" Ryan said, a look coming to his eyes which told Danni that the game between them was now at an end so he could continue with his job. She glanced over her shoulder at Steve, catching the impatient look he shot at her before she spoke, looking back at Ryan again.
"What if I invited you to the beach on Saturday and then back to a BBQ at Meka's house in the evening, would that be enough to sweeten the deal" She asked him. Ryan blinked, tilting his head to the side with a look of surprise.
"Danni, you know I was only kidding about the sweeten the deal, right?" he asked before he straightened and breathed out.
"I know" Danni said with a nod at him. "The offer is still there though. I had been planning on asking you to come the next time I had saw you anyway."
"I may take you up on that offer" He said before turning serious again. "You really want to get into that trailer, don't you?" he asked, waiting until he nodded before he sighed again. "Fine, you win, you and your new partner have twenty minutes in the trailer but I mean only twenty minutes. If you find anything then log it with one of the team before you take it"
"Thank you Boston" She said, reaching out and squeezing his bicep before she moved passed him to the back of the van and extracted two pairs of adhesive gloves from the box they had. She smiled at the others who simply returned her smile, too used to seeing her get equipment from their vans to question it. "I owe you for this and I meant it about Saturday, it be good to spend the day with you and Jake" She commented as Ryan joined her, speaking about his four-year-old son.
"We could just add it to the growing tab but we'll just leave it with me and the lad coming on Saturday. Now stop wasting time here and head over there" He stated firmly.
Danni smiled at him before she headed back towards the trailer. She could hear Ryan behind her, ordering his team to start looking at the surrounding perimeter of the trailer to see whether there was anything outside which could be bagged as evidence.
She climbed up the steps, moving round the two policemen and twisted round so she was facing them with a smile on her face. She ignored the fact that they were glaring at Steve and spoke to her partner.
"We have twenty minutes in the trailer Steve, put these on before you go in" She told him as she held out the gloves to him, waiting until he reached out and took them from her before she turned and looked at the two policemen. "Hello Brett, hello Kana how are you both today?" She asked them pleasantly, waiting until they answered her query before she carried on speaking. "Would you both mind providing some additional cover for the CSU team while they work the perimeter so they could use some uniform presence just in case something kicks off in the crowd."
"That is not a problem Detective Williams" Kana, the elder of the two policemen told her with a nod.
"Thank you, I appreciate it" She responded, turning and heading into the trailer, pulling her own gloves on at the same time. She looked around the trailer again, dropping her bag near the entrance, before she looked at Steve as he followed her in. "So, what exactly are we looking for?"
"Anything which might link him to Hesse" He replied. "Papers, picture, anything no matter how insignificant it may seem. Hesse has a code which he tends to use, like hieroglyphics, so anything which looks like doodles or squiggles make sure you bag" he ordered. Danni raised an eyebrow at the tone he used with her but brushed it off and simply nodded.
"Okay I'm on it" She answered with a nod at him. "If there is anything to find in this place then we'll find it." She promised as she turned and headed through the trailer to the portion at the back where it appeared Doran slept.
The first thing which she saw was a used needled left exposed on the bedside table though whether it belonged to Doran or the blonde girl Jaycee who had stormed out of the trailer just as they had arrived was beyond her ability to tell. They would have to do a test on it to verify that. The sheets were still rumpled, clearly from a night of vigorous sex while dirty, used clothes and empty, half crushed beer cans littered the flooring. She glanced round with a look of disgust before stepping over the biggest pile to the small desk shoved in the corner. Danni pushed a pile of porn magazines to the side and began looking through the paperwork beneath it. Nothing stood out at first glance, just a few bills, a list of car parts and another scrap of paper with people's names on it but there was no sign of Victor Hesse on them. She breathed out feeling vaguely disappointed that there was nothing there which was even remotely like Steve had described to her.
Danni's hand dropped to her side as she moved on the spot, looking around her again, her gaze snagging on the weapons which were spread out everywhere unable to wrap her head around the fact that Doran had been so confident that he would just leave them out like that. She moved to the wardrobe and opened it, her nose wrinkling up again, this time at the smell from the confined space. She kicked some of the clothing away, uncovering more guns and what looked like another stash of drugs and a shoebox with blank DVD cases in it but there was no sign of any paperwork.
They had more than enough evidence to put Doran away for his crimes but finding his link to Victor Hesse was going to prove harder to find. If they didn't find a paper trail or something similar to show that the murder weapon had changed hands then Doran could easily say that he hadn't seen it before or if by some miracle he did admit it was his he could run the defence that it was stolen from his trailer.
It was beginning to look as though their only option would be to get a confession from the man and that was something which Danni already knew from their short encounter with him, wouldn't be easy to gain.
"Danni! In here!"
Danni moved instantly, hurrying out of the bedroom and back into the main living space, her eyes falling on Steve instantly. He was standing by a partially concealed door which had been hidden behind a book case, she could see from where she was standing that the door in question was padlocked shut. She looked back at Steve, her eyes focusing on his hand where had had his gun, the nozzle pointed at the padlock.
She took in the rest of the scene in an instant before nodded at Steve, lifting the bottom of her dress up slightly and slipping out her secondary gun from the thigh holster she wore. She brought it up, hitting the safety off and pointed it at the door, moving to the other side of Steve so she could give him maximum coverage.
"Go on, I've got you covered." She said, her eyes flickering from the closed door to look at Steve. She waited for Steve to move but he remained still for a moment, staring at her with a look of barely disguised surprised in his eyes. "What is it Steve? Is there something wrong?" She asked him, her voice barely above a murmur as she turned to look at the door, her eyes scanning over her frame of it. "Is there a bomb behind the door? Is that why you aren't doing anything?" She demanded, a wave of adrenaline hitting her as she mentally tried to figure out the distance between where they were standing and the exit and whether they could make it in time before it exploded.
"Bomb" Steve repeated. "No there's no bomb Danni" He told her. Danni felt some of the tension ease from her shoulders before she looked at him with a questioning look at her face. "I'm just surprised that you keep your secondary gun in a thigh holster. Do you always keep it there?" He asked with a raised eyebrow. Danni blinked at the question, wondering for a moment if she had misheard him before her eyes narrowed.
"Are you being serious right now?" She demanded, using her gun to jab at the door. "There could be anything behind that door and you pick this time to ask me about where I keep my secondary gun?" She shook her head, raising her eyes to the ceiling, praying for strength before she looked back at him. "You are actually unbelievable. Yes, Steven when I wear a skirt or a dress then I tend to keep my secondary gun in a thigh holster so that it's in reach of me when I need it. If I had known this morning that I was going to meet you and that we were going to end up arresting a wanted arms dealer then I would probably have worn a pair of jeans or something." She told me. "Now can we please focus on the reason we're here in the first place which is finding out what is behind this door?"
"Of course, Danni" Steve replied with a shrug before he turned back to the door. "Personally, I like your dress. It's cute."
"Carry on talking about my dress and I will shoot you myself." She promised him, cursing in her mind when she felt her cheeks redden. She glanced at Steve when he looked at her over his shoulder, holding up three fingers on his hand. He waited until she nodded before he lowered his fingers one at a time, turning back just as he squeezed the trigger, the bullet hit the lock loosening it. Steve took a step forward ripping the padlock off and threw it to one side before he pulled the door open.
She watched as his body tensed, remaining still for a split second before he slowly hunched down, his arms spread to the side of him as though he was trying to make himself appear less intimidating. Danni frowned at his reaction, moving closer to him. She angled herself so that was still covered by the wall but could look into the area behind the door. Steve was speaking now, saying something to whoever it was in a language which sounded suspiciously like mandarin to her.
Danni turned her gaze from Steve, her eyes widening in horror when she caught sight of the small frightened girl within. She was thin, her skin stretched tightly across her bones indicating that she was suffering from malnutrition for a while. She was young, no older than seventeen though Danni was positive that she was younger than that. Her thin wrist had been bound together and were cuffed to the rusty pipe to the side of her, forcing her arms above her head in an uncomfortable position. The skin had been rubbed raw where she had obviously struggled against the handcuffs. Her blue dress was filthy and torn, barely covering her and there was a wild terrified look in her dark eyes, her breathing was harsh as she clearly struggled to breathe properly through her terror. Danni had seen of a lot of things since she had started wearing a badge but she had never seen someone quite so petrified as this girl.
She moved forward, coming to a stop beside Steve and met the girl's eyes when they flickered to her, focusing on her intently with an almost desperate look. Danni knelt next to Steve, keeping the girl's gaze, hoping that the sight of another female may help calm the girl before the panic attack which was clearly threatening her took hold.
"Steve?" Danni said, keeping her voice soft and calm, trying to hide her shock. Out of everything which she had expected to find in Doran's trailer, this had not been one of them.
"Well it looks like we have yet another charge to add to the ever-growing list which Doran is facing Doran" Steve remarked calmly. "It looks like the bastard is into human trafficking on top of everything else, just like Hesse is. God only knows how many girls have made their way through this door and into this cupboard."
"That man is beyond words" Danni said, trying to keep the anger she was feeling from her voice knowing it would only upset the woman further. She came to her feet, using Steve's shoulder as a boost. "I'm going to ring for some EMT, we need to get her seen and get some fluids into her as soon as possible, god knows when the last time she was given a drink was. Are you okay staying here with her?" She asked him.
"I've got this Danni, go and make the call." He answered with a nod.
She took another glance at the girl before she turned and made her way across the cluttered room stepping back into the fresh air.
She bent over briefly, resting her hands against her thighs before she forced herself to stand up straight again, one though going through her mind.
She would make Fred Doran pay for this if it was the last thing which she did.
