AN: Sorry! I forgot AGAIN. I will try harder. Really, I will. I hope you like the chapter!
"Doctor..." started Clara. They were stuffed in the back of the van, with Dr. Rosen and Rachel. Bill was driving, Hicks was in the passenger seat, and Nina, Gary, and Kat were sitting in the middle. "How is it exactly that we ended up with these people? Your usual MO is to save aliens..."
The Doctor was silent for a moment. "Well," he said carefully, "I think that we are saving aliens..." He shifted positions.
Clara stared at him. "I don't know what you mean,"
The Doctor shifted again, this time in an uncomfortable manner that wasn't caused by the three other people in the seat with him. "Well... I'm not sure about this...but I think that what's causing these abilities may not be natural."
The entire occupancy of the car went silent. "Doctor..." Rachel started carefully. "What do you mean our abilities aren't natural? Our brains are evolving, and that's what causes them. Eventually everyone will have an Alpha ability, right?" Dr. Rosen stared at the Doctor, completely unbelieving of what he was saying.
"Yeah... I'm fairly sure that at some point, an alien, maybe one, maybe two, possibly an entire race, came to earth. Obviously, they weren't trying to take over the world, or destroy it, so I wasn't aware. They probably somehow, infected someone? But that person most likely wasn't aware of what had happened, and were shocked when they discovered they had amazing abilities. Naturally, they reproduced, and then the abilities spread. It's most likely a recessive gene, considering how few people seen to have abilities..." The last part the Doctor said mostly to himself.
The alien theory made perfect sense to Clara and the Doctor, but everyone else vehemently rejected it.
"There is NO way that I'm part alien!" cried Nina.
"Dr. Rosen, he's not telling truth, right? He's lying, isn't he, Dr. Rosen?" Gary stammered.
"Of course he is, Gary. What does he think we are, idiots?" Bill told Gary, reassuringly.
"Seriously, keep your screwy theories to yourself, Doctor," snarled Hicks, who hadn't grown fond of the Doctor.
Rachel, who had been silent through all this, finally spoke up. "Maybe...maybe he has a point, guys..."
Everyone stared at Rachel, even the Doctor and Clara. "Well, it kind of makes sense! I mean, when I think of humans evolving, getting super powers doesn't exactly come to mind! Maybe, being able to use all of our brains, or becoming immune to certain viruses, but being able to produce fire? Flying? Not being able to die? That isn't natural!" Rachel was breathing heavily after her speech.
"Rachel," said Dr. Rosen. "you have a point. It's possible that you could be part alien..." Dr. Rosen shook his head slightly, barely believing that he just said that.
Just as they were going to go into another round if arguing, Bill announced, "We're here,"
Clara gazed up at the Golden Rod apartments. She could see why they were called that, the exterior was a sickening gold color that needed a fresh coat of paint. The three-story building had fallen into disrepair, with many shutters missing, and some shingles on the roof had fallen off. All of the letters that had once proudly proclaimed the name of the complex had fallen off, except for the 'old' portion of 'golden'. The other letters were still visible, as the paint had faded around them.
"Wow. Cheap place," remarked Hicks. He looked at the apartments with disdain.
"What's Dearborne doing in there?" wondered Rachel aloud. Everyone scrambled out of the car.
"Ow!" cried Clara, when the Doctor stepped on her foot. He grabbed her by the waist and brought her out of the van. Kissing Clara on the forehead, he apologized.
Rachel and Kat exchanged glances, not sure if grabbing your friends by the waist and kissing them was a strange British custom or something that only happened with the Doctor and Clara. Shrugging it off as tradition, everyone started towards the building.
"Hey! Hey! Who are the FBI trained people here?" cried Kat, when Rachel and Nina moved in front of her.
Nina rolled her eyes. "Yeah, you were at Quantico for two weeks," she said, knowing full well that Kat had been able to pass with flying colors.
"Yeah, because I don't require training, I can just watch someone do something, and then, BAM! I can do it too!" Kat bragged.
Rachel caught her breath and held up a hand, motioning for everyone to be quiet. Kat fell silent. Rachel listened intently for a moment.
"There are many heartbeats in there, most of which are rats," Rachel grimaced, being germaphobic. "only two human heartbeats..."
"Rachel, can you tell which floor?" Bill asked. They had reached the front of Golden Rod apartments.
Rachel concentrated again, "He's on the second floor..."
Suddenly, one of the windows on an upper floor shattered, and a body flew out, literally FLEW. The person soared into the sky, and disappeared from sight before the Alphas had time to react.
Gary cried out as broken glass showered everyone. Bill aimed his gun at the disappearing figure, but it was only a dot now. He lowered his gun.
"Damn," he said. Rachel shushed him, listening.
"Guys," she said with alarm. "there aren't any more heartbeats." Panicked, everyone hustled to the second floor.
Clara marveled at the person's ability. What must it be like to soar through the air like that?
"Every ability has a downside. I wonder what his is?" Dr. Rosen told Clara. Clara looked at Dr. Rosen, realizing that she had spoken out loud.
"Oh...like what?" Clara asked. She couldn't imagine what the downside to flying might be.
"My downside is that I get very...well, I take advantage of people to he things I want. Until about a month ago, I was 'borrowing'," Nina was saying bitterly, using air quotes. "really nice cars, and staying in a penthouse that I wasn't paying rent for."
"Now Nina, it isn't your fault, you know you can't help it," Dr. Rosen began, attempting to calm her down. He put a hand on her arm.
Nina yanked her arm out of Dr. Rosen's grasp. "You don't know what I can and can't help," she snarled, marching after Bill and the others.
Clara and the Doctor stared after Nina. Dr. Rosen sighed, and scratched his head. "Well, let's catch up with the rest of them," he said. They hurried after Nina.
They reached the second floor, and Rachel directed them to room where Hector Dearborne was supposed to be. Hicks and Bill stood on either side of the door, and Hicks tried to open it. "Locked," he reported.
Bill stood in front of the door, and was about to kick it in, when the Doctor rushed over. "Here, I've got it. You never know, maybe this Hector fellow is strapped to the door!" He pulled out his sonic screwdriver, which had been given back to him when everyone rode in the TARDIS for the first time. "When in doubt, sonic it!"
"What is that thing?" Kat asked, referring to the silver object with a blue light on the end.
"Oh, it's his sonic screwdriver!" Clara said. "He loves this thing. It scans stuff, unlocks doors, lots of things."
"Except," the Doctor said. "except wood. It doesn't do wood. If the door is made of wood, the sonic can't open it. Since this door has metal hinges and locks..." The Doctor pushed the door open proudly.
"Whoa-ho-ho!" Kat cried. "That thing's awesome!" She tried to grab the sonic screwdriver from the Doctor, but he stuffed it into his left jacket pocket before she could take it.
"Ah ah ah!" He tutted. "This is a very special piece of equipment! No one but me gets to use it." Kat stuck her hand in her pocket and pouted.
Clara leaned over to her. "Don't worry, he doesn't let me touch it either,"
"Touch what?" Hicks asked, raising his eyebrows. Clara blushed, but before anyone could say anything, Rachel cried out.
"Dr. Rosen!" She shrieked. Dr. Rosen and the Doctor rushed into the apartment to find Rachel. They saw her, backed against a wall, her hand over her mouth. Quivering, she pointed at the wall in front of her.
Clara, Kat, Nina, Bill, and Hicks quickly joined them. Gary was slowly walking into the apartment. Once Nina saw what was on the wall, she immediately steered Gary back out of the apartment, to which he greatly protested.
"Nina! I don't like being touched! You know that! Why can't I go into the apartment, Nina?" He asked.
Her voice shaking slightly, Nina responded, "Because, Gary, it's too horrible for you to see,"
AN: Dun dun dun dunnnnnn! What could be that horrible?! I hope you liked it!
