Alice woke up to sound of her brothers' arguing.
"Where are you going Dean?!" Sam asked.
"You don't need me!" Dean said stubbornly. "You and Ruby go fight demons!"
Dean grabs his bag and starts for the door. Sam tried to block him, but Dean just goes around him.
"Hold on. Dean, come on, man!" Sam calls out.
Dean stops in his track for a split second. Then turns around and punch Sam in the face, almost knocking him off his feet from the impact.
"You satisfied?" Sam asks. Dean hits him again, and then throws his bag on the floor. Sam touches his lip, and realizes it's bleeding. "I guess not."
Alice groaned and ducked under the covers, not wanting to get involved in their brotherly drama.
"Do you even know how far off the reservation you've gone?! How far from normal? From human?!" Dean yelled.
"I'm just exorcizing demons!" Sam said defensively.
"With your mind !" Dean yelled. "What else can you do?
"I can send them back to hell, but it only works with demons, and that's it." Sam explained.
Dean grabbed the collar of his shirts and pushes him backwards. "What else can you do?!
"I told you!" Sam yelled.
"And I have every reason in the world to believe that." Dean said sarcastically. Dean begins to walk away from Sam.
"Look, I should have said something!" Sam said. Dean stops, his back still to Sam "I'm sorry, Dean. I am. But try to see the other side here."
Dean turns around and faces him. "The other side?"
"I'm pulling demons out of innocent people!" Sam explained.
"Use the knife!" Dean yelled.
"The knife kills the victim! What I do, most of them survive!" Sam argued. "Look, I've saved more people in the last five months than we save in a year."
"Or is that what Ruby want you to think?! Huh? Kind of like the way she tricked you into using your powers?!" Dean asked, forcefully. Dean, shakes his head indisappointment. "Slippery slope, brother. Just wait and see. Because it's gonna get darker and darker, and God knows where it ends!
"I'm not gonna let it go too far." Sam explained.
Dean smiles humorlessly at that. He walks over to the wall on the side with the beds and hits the lamp on the side table, making it crash and fly. Almost hitting Alice, but no one notices. Dean looks angry again. He opens his mouth to speak, but is interrupted by Alice getting out of bed.
She steps in between Dean and Sam, fighting the urge to punch one of them in the jaw.
"I'm not sure if everyone here has a hangover. But I for one do!" Alice yelled angrily. "Now, I have been awake long enough to grasp the siuation. And I didn't want to get involved, but I draw the line at almost getting hit with hotel lamps!"
"Alice, I'm sorry about the lamp, but Sam is out of control!" Dean yelled.
Alice' eyes softened. "Sorry Sam, but I kinda have to agree with Dean.
" Thank you!"
"Sam I get you're trying to make the best of your powers and all, but this exorcizing Demon's with your mind, may be helpful now...but it's a very dangerous road..." Alice started. "While we may be more 'understanding' other hunter will not beso sympathetic.
"If I didn't know you, I'd want to hunt you!" Dean said forcefully. Sam's eyes are tearful, and he looks down in sorrow. "And so would other hunters!"
"Dean!" I said warningly. Glaring slightly. "Sam may be treading on thin ice, but I feel like you're overreacting a bit!"
"Overreacting?! He's exorcizing demons with his mind!"
Sam looked up, sadness still remaining in his eyes. "You were gone. I was here. Ihad to keep on fighting without you. And what I'm doing...It works.
"Well, tell me. If it's so terrific... then why'd you lie about it to me?" Dean questioned.
Sam's gaze drops on looks down with that. And I was also left silent.
"Why did an angel tell me to stop you?!"
Sam looks up, surprised. "What?"
"Cas said that if I don't stop you, he will...See what that means, Sam? That means that God doesn't want you doing this. So, are you just gonna stand there and tell me everything is all good?!"
With tearful eyes, we all exchange looks and then Sam looks down again. The silence is broken by Sam's phone ringing, Dean flinches at the sound and Sam answers it.
"Hello?" Sam said into the phone, pinching the bridge of his nose, trying to collect himself.
"Hey, Travis. Yeah, hey."
...
"Uh.."
...
"It's good to hear your voice, too, yeah. Um, look, it's not a really good time right now. It's-"
...
"Yeah, okay. Uh, well, just give me the details, and, uh.."
...
"Carthage, Missouri."
Dean watches Sam as he walks over to the bedside table and writes down the location.
"Looking for Jack Montgomery." He puts down the pen and ends the phone call. Breathing deeply, he looks over at Dean and Alice.
I can't believe it. Mom, a hunter?"
"I wouldn't have believed it either if I hadn't seen it myself. That woman could kick some ass. I mean, she almost took me down."
Alice sat in the back seat staring out the window, a bit left out of the conversation. She couldn't exactly join in and say "Oh my gosh! Mom was a hunter?!" Since she wasn't her mom and she never even met her.
"How'd she look? I mean... was she happy?"
"Yeah, she was awesome. Funny and smart. So hopeful..." Dean said, almost sadly. He looks over at Sam for moment and then back on the road. "Dad, too. Until of course..."
Sam let's out a deep sigh.
"What?" Dean asked.
Sam looks out his window. "Nothing." After a moment he turns back to Dean
"It's just, our parents. And now we find out our grandparents too? Our whole family murdered and for what!? So Yellow Eyes could get in my nursery and bleed in my mouth?"
Dean has a slightly confused look on his face and is contemplating about something. "Sam, I never said anything about demon blood."
Sam's face immediately turns to one of guilt.
"You knew about that?"
Sam still doesn't look at Dean. "Yeah, for about a year".
Dean looks out through the window again, eyes on the road.
"A whole year?"
"I should have told you. I'm sorry."
"You've been saying that a lot lately, Sam."Dean starts. "But whatever. You don't want to tell me, you don't have to. It's fine."
"Dean..." Sam looks over at Dean, who's focusing on the road.
"Whatever."
And then the Impala then falls silent once more.
ALICE POV
Jack goes ahead and takes a beer from the fridge. Totally oblivious to the fact that 3 people are parked outside his house staring at him through a pair of binoculars.
"Are you sure that's him?" Dean asked curiously.
"Only Jack Montgomery in town."
"And we're looking for..."
"Travis said to keep an eye out for anything weird."
"Weird?"
'Yeah."
"Alright, well, yeah, I've seen big weird, little weird, weird with crazy on top. But this guy? I mean, come on, this guy's boring."
"I don't know, Dean. Travis seemed pretty sure." Sam says, taking up a pair of binoculars of his own.
Jack is leaning on the island in the kitchen, looking thoughtful. He takes another swig of his beer, and then opens the fridge again. He grabs a leftover chicken, and starts eating, not bothering with platers or utensils. He begins to eat frantically, like he's been fasting for days. He throws the finished chicken aside and grabs a pack of uncooked meat and opens it up and starts eating the raw meat, throwing looks over his shoulder for his wife.
I drop my binoculars and look over towards Sam and Dean. We all have matching disgusted face.
"I'd say that qualifies as weird." Sam said.
Dean, Sam, and I walk through the door, and stop abruptly. A smile forms on Dean's lips.
"Travis." Sam said.
Travis is sitting at the table, beer in hand sipping it like he bought himself.
"See, Sam. Told you we should have hid the beer." Dean said, chuckling to himself. Travis gets up, smiling as he walks towards the us.
"Smartass. Get over here." Travis said jokingly. He laughs and he pulls Dean in for a bear hug. "Ahh, good to see you."
"You too." Dean said, smiling. They break and Travis's gaze falls on me. He grabs my arm and pulls me in for a hug, lifting me off the ground a bit.
"Good to see you Alice!" Travis said, smiling.
"You too Travis." I said smiling.
"Glad that perky little ass of yours didn't go anywhere." He said, laughing and slapping my ass lightly.
"Ah ha...ha ha...yeah, its not going anywhere." I said awkwardly.
He turned to Sam, his next hug victim and embraces him.
"Good to see you." Travis says.
"You too, Travis." Sam replies a smile forming on his lips.
They break apart and Travis says "Man, you got tall, kid." They both laugh at that comment.
"How long has it been?"
"Ah, gotta be 10 years."
"You still a.. oh, what was it... a mathlete?"
Sam scoffs a little. "No."
"Yep, sure is!" Dean says cheerfully.
"Been too long. I mean, look at you! Grown men! And woman." Travis said eyeing me. "John would have been damn proud of you. Sticking together like this."
"Yeah. Yeah, we're as thick as thieves." Dean said, glancing at Sam who's smile disappears with Dean's words. "Nothing more important than family."
Travis walks over to the table, and Dean follows, ignoring Sam.
"Sorry I'm late for the dance." Travis says. They sit down at the table, and Sam and I sit down on the bed next to Dean, across from Travis.
"Thanks for helping out an old man. I'm a little, uh...shorthanded." Travis says, holding up his right hand and arm, which is covered in a cast. We all get a good chuckle from that, but then the joking is pushed aside and it's time for business. "So, you track down Montgomery?"
"Yeah, we found him at his home." Sam replies.
"And?" Travis asks.
"Well, he had a hell of a case of the munchies, topped off with a burger he forgot to cook." Dean said.
"That's him alright." Travis says.
"What's him?" I asked curiously.
"Boys, we got a rougarou on our hands." Travis said in a seriousness.
"A rougarou?" Dean repeated. He looks over at Sam and I for a second. "Is that made up? That sounds made up."
"Sounds like something from a Roald Dahl book.
"They're mean, nasty little suckers. Rotted teeth, wormy skin, the works." Travis explained.
"Well, that ain't this guy. I mean, he was wearing a cellphone on his belt." Dean replied.
"He'll turn ugly soon enough. They start out human, for all intents and purposes."
"So, what? They go through some kind of metamorphosis?" Sam asks.
"Yep, like a maggot turning into a bull fly." Travis says. "But most of all...they're hungry."
"Hungry for what?" Dean asks curiously.
"At first, for everything, but then... for long pig." He answers.
"Sam exhales at that, understanding what Travis means. I sighed heavily, this definitely wasn't a Roald Dahl character... Dean on the other hand looks confused, not understanding the term "long pig".
"Long pig?" Dean asks curiously.
"Human flesh." I answered bluntly.
"And that is my word of the day." Dean said.
"Hunger grows in...till they can't fight it. Till they got to take themselves a big, juicy chomp, and then it happens."
"What happens?" I ask, practically on the edge of my seat...er bed.
"They transform completely and fast." Travis answers bluntly. "One bite's all it takes. Eyes, teeth, skin; it all turns. No going back either. They feed once, they're a monster forever. And our man Jack's headed there on a bullet train."
"Well, how'd you find this guy if he's a walking, talking human?" Dean questions.
"Lets just say it runs in his family." Travis replies.
"You mean, uh..." Sam started.
"Killed his daddy back in '78. Son of a bitch mangled 8 bodies before I put him down. Guy used to be a dentist. Cadillac, trophy wife... Little did I know, pregnant trophy wife. She put the boy up for adoption. By the time I found out, he was long gone, lost in the system." Travis said, disappointed in himself.
"You mean to tell me you couldn't find someone?" Sam asks to clarify.
"I'm not sure I wanted to. The idea of hunting down some poor kid... I don't think I'd have the heart. No. I wanted to wait, make damn sure I had the right man. Apparently, I do." Travis sighs and takes a swig of his beer.
Dean and Travis are by the table, fixing gas cans ,that looks like tiny fire-extinguishers, for use.
"So fire, huh?" Dean said.
"The only way I found to kill these bastards; deep-fry 'em." Travis says.
'Well, that's gonna be... horrible. Is that what you did to Jack's dad?" Dean asks.
"Uh-huh."
Sam comes into the room from outside, papers in hand. "Not wasting any time, are you?"
"None to waste. The guy hulks out, we won't be finding bodies, just remains." Travis replies bluntly.
Sam sits down on the bed next to the table next to Alice.
"What if he doesn't hulk out? I did a little homework. Uh, I've been checking out the lore on rougarous." Sam says.
"What? My 30 years of experience not good enough for you?" Travis asks, raising an eyebrow.
"What? No. No, I-I- I just wanted to be prepared. I mean, not that you didn't.." Sam arts, stuttering like a damn fool.
"Sam loves research. He does. He keeps it under his mattress right next to his KY. It's a sickness." Dean replies.
"Sometimes he sleeps with his laptop, calls it baby. Kisses it even. When we say love, we mean it." Alice smiling, joining in. "It worries me."
Dean and Alice look over to Sam, smiles on their faces.
"It's true." Dean says.
Sam ignores us and continues on with what he was saying. "Look, everything you said checked out, of course, but uh. I found a couple of interesting stories about people who have this rougarou gene or whatever. See, they start to turn, but they never take the final step."
"Really?" Dean and I ask simultaneously.
"See, if they never eat human flesh, they don't fully transform." Sam explains.
"So what? Go vegan, stay human?" Dean asks curiously.
"Basically. Or in this case, eat a lot of raw meat, just not..."
"Long pig." Alice answers.
"Right." Sam says.
Dean smiles a little, but Travis is just sitting next to him, having watched and listened to Sam about this under silence.
"Good on you for the due diligence, Sam." Travis says, getting up from his spot next to Dean. "But those are fairy tales." He walks over to the little pantry and pours himself another cup of coffee. "Fact is, every rougarou I ever saw or heard of... took that bite."
Sam stands up, as if to challenge Travis. "Okay, well, that doesn't mean that Jack will."
Dean and Alice watches as Sam rises and then stands up them self.
"So what do we do? Sit and hope and wait for a body count?" Travis asks.
"No, we talk to him. Explain what's happening. That way he can fight it."
"Fight it? " Travis laughs humorlessly at Sam's comment. "Are you kidding me? You ever been really hungry?"
This obviously gets Dean's attention, who's been looking at the papers Sam's brought with him.
"I mean, haven't-eaten-in-days hungry?"
"Yeah."
"Yeah. Right then. So somebody slaps a big, juicy sirloin in front of you, you walking away?"
Dean thinks it over for a brief second and then admits "no" silently, only raising his eyebrows. He slowly looks over at Sam.
"That's what we are to him now, meat on legs. I'm sorry. I'm sure he's a stand-up guy, but it's pure, base instinct." Travis explains. "Everything in nature's gotta eat. You think he can stop himself 'cause he's nice?"
"I don't know. But we're not gonna kill him unless he does something to get killed for." Sam says sternly and seriously.
Dean and Alice looks over at him at that. Sam takes a few breaths and then walks out of the room. Travis looks over at us, a bit puzzled by Sam's reaction. "What's up with your brother?" Travis asks.
Alice's gaze lingers on the door.
"Don't get me started." Dean replies, turning to sit down again.
