Lomadia Pov
The first day was very awkward. Chiron led us down to the cabins and dropped us all off at our assigned places. Mine and my brothers' was number four, so we were first. Lucky us, I thought dryly.
"Ashley!" Chiron called from outside the cabin. A sixteen or seventeen year old girl emerged from the gray building. She had blonde hair and gray eyes like me and my mother had. I had a sudden thought. What if all children of Athena had blonde hair and gray eyes? Had I seen that on the video? If they did, Nilesy would stick out a sore thumb. Lalna would be a bit better, but he too had brilliant green eyes. Wonderful. One more thing to figure out today.
Chiron talked to the girl quietly for a minute or so, and in the midst of my thinking I noticed the owl above the door of the cabin. It wasn't real, but its eyes seemed to follow me. I was half delighted by the sight of my favourite animal and half freaked out.
"Cool owl. I think you'll fit in well there." My friend Minty teased me. She was normally quite nice, like now, but when she was angry, it never ended up pretty. That happened three ways; One, someone had upset or hurt Kim; two, someone had insulted her, or three; one of the others combined with her stealing a drink and getting slightly drunk again. I'd tried to stop her several times from doing it, but she always insisted on having something before a big party. I'd never been able to stop her. Maybe here she'd stop.
"Whatever." I said, nudging her with my shoulder lightly. She laughed.
"You three have your bags?" The older girl, Ashley I remembered, asked us. With a start, I realized from here, I wouldn't be sharing a room with the other four girls.
"Yeah, we've got them." Lalna said confidently.
"Come on in then!" she said. She opened the door wide and stepped inside, holding it open. I stepped in first and caught my breath.
The room was beautiful in a strange kind of way. Curves and arches added detail to the walls, while the windows were set in the walls with window seats and armour hanging below them the plain white curtains. All the bunk beds were up against one wall and the rest was organized chaos, if that made sense. SMART boards, battle maps, countless scrolls and books, tables and chairs, a small workshop, cabinets full of unknown objects, and blueprints that reminded me of Mom's work office. Two small rooms off to the sides were clearly the bathrooms. Ashley clapped her hands sharply.
"Alright everybody, we have three new legacies here today!" she announced. Everyone looked over right away. The youngest were about nine or ten, the oldest almost ready for collage.
"Whose kids are they?" A boy called. Ashley ignored him.
"Meet Lomadia, Lalna and Nilesy Jackson." She continued. The reaction was immediate. Eyebrows raised, glances were exchanged, a few gasped, and the same boy called out again.
"THE Jacksons? Like, Percy and Annabeth Jackson?" he asked. I rolled my eyes. Of course, our parents had to be some sort of celebrities/heroes that everybody knew about. I really didn't want that kind of reputation. I stepped forward.
"Yeah." I said clearly. I was pretty sure I saw Ashley flash me an approving look. Silence filled the room for a moment.
"Okay, so, Lomadia, your bunk will be over there, and the boys can each chose one on that side with the other guys, alright? There are drawers under each bed to hold your stuff, and lunch is in an hour. You'll each get a full tour of camp before supper and Capture the flag means there's no campfire today. Lights out at ten. Schedules are on the wall by the door. Anthea, can you show the boys around this afternoon? I'll take Lomadia, and the rest of you have normal activities. Shayla, would you please talk to our allies about changing plans with new campers tonight as soon as possible." Wow, this girl was a natural leader.
I walked over to my bed and pulled out the drawers. I quickly organized my clothing and few belongings in the drawers. I looked at my still mostly empty drawers and checked my pockets for the charm I always had. It had been the latest birthday present from our parents, a simple owl charm with glimmering rhinestones inset for eyes. Now I wondered how many secrets my parents had kept from us. Every time I went on an owl related rant, did they think of the owl above the door here at camp? Every time Nilesy won a swimming award at the local pool, did they think of the lake I'd seen on my way here? Every time Lalna went and made crazy crafts and inventing drafts, did they remember the workshop here?
I realized I didn't care. If all those monsters were so strong, no wonder they'd protect us. I still loved them. This didn't change our family at all, just expanded it.
I put it back in my pocket carefully and zipped it up top. I replaced the drawers with my suitcase in the biggest one, and sat up. I had a bottom bunk. I picked up the few things still on the floor next to me and arranged them carefully. My stuffed pillow Mr. Owl in the corner by my pillow, and my art project from last year, were I'd made the coolest forest scene on the wall. Looking over, Nilesy had his swimming awards all over his wall and Lalna fit right in with his crazy drawings and crafts. I smiled to myself and pulled out my favourite book, on a group of magic wild owls who could talk and went adventuring for the thrill of it all. I had all four books in the series, and the bonus adventure guide as well. I curled on the surprisingly comfy pillows and read until lunch. The food turned out to be also very good, and the idea of burning food for a prayer kind of seemed strange at first, but I said nothing. I saw all the others at the other tables, and exchanged a few words with Zoeya at the end. Chiron, now fully a centaur, introduced all of us to the other few hundred campers. All of them seemed to know our parents, but the most stares were directed at me and my brothers, no competition at all.
Ashley started our tour as soon as lunch was finished.
"First thing you need is a weapon. It will probably take a while for you to find the best one for you, but with Capture the flag tonight, I thought maybe we should take a look first." She led me to a shed outside the cabin and opened it. I nearly gasped at the thought of actually using one. They were just so… lethal looking.
"Don't worry about it. Let's try a sword first." She said kindly, picking up and handing me a sword made of bronze. I could surprisingly lift it, but barely swing it with control. The older girl watched carefully.
"Not bad, but not suited for you that well. Maybe a dagger would be better, but we don't have many on hand. None, actually. Maybe…" She trailed off, looking into the shed thoughtfully. Something in the corner caught my eye. A… fancy, mechanical wrist guard kind of thing.
"What's that?" I asked, pointing to the weapon. Ashley raised an eyebrow.
"It's a magic item, but they usually only work right for a few people. Feel free to try it, though."
I lifted it. It was solid, but light. Gold and silver emblems decorated the bronze. It was covered with strange buttons and shapes carved into it. It looked more like one of Lalna's crazy crafts than something magic.
"Who made this?" I asked in awe. This weapon was a true work of art.
"A friend of your parents, actually. His name is Leo; he's a son of Hephaestus. He makes tons of stuff for us, normally with suggestions from others. I don't remember what that one does though."Ashley said. I nodded, only half listening. The wrist guard was large, too large for my wrist, but I tried it on anyway.
"Be careful!" Ashley warned me.'
For a moment, nothing happened. Then I realized it was now fitting perfectly on my wrist. It briefly glowed bronze, then it faded to a pale shimmer around one button on the inside of my wrist.
"It's chosen you. Press the button." The demigod said next to me. Was that awe in her voice? I wondered, but did what she said. Three seconds later, a fully equipped crossbow formed in my hand, arrow already notched, another feathery tip poking out a slot in the guard. A row of buttons had lined up underneath the slot. There was a scope, an adjustment setting or three, a GPS, and a breath mint dispenser for some reason. I gasped. Not only was it beautiful, compact and deadly, it just seemed so right to be holding it.
"There's your weapon. No doubt about it. That took a lot less time than I thought it would." Ashley grinned. "Want to go try it out on the archery range?"
I nodded, suddenly dying to go try it out. Was it my war goddess genes or just excitement? At any rate, we jogged over to the range. Empty.
"I'm far from as good as an Apollo camper, but I'm not bad. It's already loaded, just place your feet like-"She broke off as I adjusted my stance to what I remembered seeing Teep do all the time.
"How do you know how to do that?" she asked.
"One of my friends, Teep, the one who wears a dinosaur hoodie all the time, was massive on archery. I ended up seeing him at competitions a lot." I explained. I fiddled with the buttons on the guard. Several of them were labeled things like I-M, light, clock, purifiers, and others I could only guess at. Under the next arrow shaft poking out were tiny letters describing the other buttons. Hydra, fart, silver, Imperial gold, stun, flare, rocket, glove. I wasn't sure if they were for practical jokes or arrows. Maybe both.
"Okay, so it looks like those buttons under the arrow tip are for specialty arrows. Hydra arrows will shoot out multiple ropes to grab on to things. Fart arrows will make a sulphur cloud when they hit something. Silver is great for werewolves. Imperial gold will be about the same as the bronze ones you have now. Stun arrows are large and blunt. Flare will send up a flare when they hit something. Rocket ones are, well, rockets. Gloves have leather boxing gloves on the end, kind of like a softer stun. Try aiming at the target and shooting."
Okay, they are arrows. I thought. I raised the bow and pulled it back, peering through the scope at the target's center. The arrow flew as I released.
Twang! The arrow missed the target center by a few inches. I lowered the crossbow in amazement.
"High five! That was great for your first shot!" Ashley grinned. I decided I was going to like it here.
Capture the flag, here I come.
