Kaeyi Pov
"Beckii!"I called in disbelief.
"Kaeyi! It's great to see you again!" My friend called. She rushed down the steps and gave me a big hug. I could hear some talking from the group behind me, but Chiron led them off to the next cabin, Hermes.
"It's going to be great hanging out together this summer! Come in, I'll help you get set up quickly before our next activity." Beckii led me inside the cabin, suitcase in tow.
"Alright, everyone, this is Kaeyi Grace! She's a legacy, and she'll be staying with us!" Beckii said brightly. A few campers looked, up and said hi, some didn't pay attention.
"Kaeyi, this is Belle, my second-in-command." Beckii introduced. Belle was quite pretty, with fishtail braids holding her platinum blonde hair on either side of her head and sweet features.
"There are two empty bunks on the girl's side. You can share with Shay, bottom bunk on the far right. She's got top bunk, so I hope that you don't mind. She just got claimed yesterday, so you two can learn more about camp together. Shay!" Belle said, pointing to the bunk. A girl a year or two older than me climbed down the ladder on the side of the bunk, and I realized that even if this was the beauty cabin, none were better looking than Shay.
She had long, dark curls styled perfectly around her head, flawless skin, full red lips, sparkling emerald eyes, and her clothes complimented her in every way possible. A black miniskirt and hot pink tank top with rhinestones in a fancy font that said 'Perfect'.
"Yes, Belle?" Shay said sweetly, practically skipping over.
"Kaeyi's a new legacy; she'll be sharing a bunk with you. Kaeyi, this is Shay."
Make a good first impression. Then just be you.
My mom's rule bounced in my head. I smiled at the older girl.
"Hi." I kept it simple, but I was feeling nervous all over again. So many girls at this camp were way prettier than me. If even a single one of those girls wanted to date Martyn-and there was no reason why not-I didn't have a chance.
Shay smiled, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. Her gaze said, oh, look. Another little annoyance to deal with.
She led the way over to the bunk, gestured to the bottom half, only to then sit down with me.
"I'll help you unpack your stuff, since I know what it's like being new." She said, and I wondered if I'd judged too much in that one look.
I opened my suitcase and realized a problem.
"Where do we put our clothes?" I asked. Shay laughed.
"There's a chest of drawers at the end of the bed, and if you need more room, under the bed should do."
"Okay."
We set to work, pulling out my neatly folded clothes, then my make-up and hair supplies. There wasn't a lot, and Shay kept a running commentary going as we sorted and folded. Oh, I love that shoe brand! It's a shame that you're a smaller size- I'd have loved to borrow that skirt sometime. Hey, we use the same hairspray! Things like that. Then I pulled out my favourite picture- I'd even had it blown up to a bigger size and laminated so it would be like a poster.
In it, Beckii, Minty, Lomadia, Zoeya, Kim and I sat on the big rock outside our school, laughing and giggling as we had our picture taken, It had been… fifth grade? Or fourth, maybe?
"That's a cool picture." Shay said, looking it over. "So, you and Beckii went to the same school?"
"Yeah, we did."
"You have a different hair colour in the picture. Do you change it a lot?"
"Yeah, I tend to. It's cool, having different colours. But I think I'm sticking with pink for a while."
"Who are the other girls?" Shay asked.
"They're all other demigods or legacies like me. On the far left are Beckii, then me, then Zoeya Proasheck, then Lomadia Jackson, and finally Minty Rodriguez and her little sister Kim.
"Cool. Hey, you have a crush on someone, right?" Shay asked. I froze for a moment.
"How do you know that?" I asked finally. I hadn't even told any of the other girls, because I wanted it secret until I was sure whether he liked me back or not.
"I'm a daughter of the love goddess, come on. What's he like? Is he hot?" Shay pressed.
"Not hot, really. More… cute. And sweet. And funny."
"Oh, one of those types, hmm? Don't you worry; I'm not going to steal him. I'm more into hot, brave, maybe even a little mysterious types. Your secret is safe with me." Shay lowered her voice. "Don't be afraid to make a move, though. If he's a new camper, all the girls who are heartbreakers will be after him before he knows what type they are. I know that quite a few of them that go for those types. And watch out yourself. You're pretty, and guys will pretend to fall for you all over the place. Don't let them even go near you if you can help it. And I hope you have some swimsuits, because we have canoeing next with the Hermes cabin. They'll push you in without a second thought, so watch out."
Shay climbed up onto her bunk without another word, leaving me a little stunned as I hung up the picture besides my bed and dug out my swimsuit.
Zoeya Pov
My ADHD was going overtime as I scanned the camp. Most of us unclaimed demigods were in the Hermes cabin, even if it was just going to be a few days.
We'd settled in, chatted a bit, ended up late for our canoeing session, and that was when Teep got claimed by Apollo.
It made me both happy and sad to see him go to his new cabin. I didn't want to be separated from both of my best friends, but I just wished him good luck and said that we'd hang out at campfire after supper together, with Rythian.
I was so excited for canoeing! I got in line and followed the rest of the cabin as they ran down the slope to the lake. The Aphrodite cabin was already there, a few canoes on the lake. Most of the girls were sitting out though, talking about boys and make-up and other things I didn't really care about. The cabin spread out across the shore, picking partners and canoes.
I saw Kaeyi's bright pink hair part way down the beach, and jogged towards her. Before I got there, though, she went onto the lake in a canoe with another girl. Next to me, Xephos and Honeydew set out, wobbling quite a bit. All around me, campers were getting into canoes and gliding across the lake. I didn't have a partner. Only a few campers remained on the shore.
"Hey, you need a partner?" A voice said behind me. I turned to find a boy standing behind me. He was really tall, with pale blonde hair and blue-green eyes the colour of the lake.
"Umm, yeah. My name's Zoeya!" I said, smiling.
"My name's Bolero, but you can call me Bo."
"That's an exotic name, isn't it?" I asked.
"Not really. My mom picked it because it sounded like the French word for handsome. Just like my sister's name is Belle. Have you ever canoed before?"
I shrugged. "Once or twice, I think."
"Okay… let's go." He picked up a canoe and placed it at the edge of the water, then grabbed the paddles. He must have been really strong.
"Ladies first." He said, handing me a paddle. I climbed in and he climbed in after me, pushing off the beach with his paddle. Soon we were gliding across the lake smoothly, enjoying the sunshine.
"We make a good team." Bo commented, turning the canoe right to avoid coming to close to Sips and another Hermes camper.
A yelp came from two Aphrodite campers, and as I watched, a Hermes canoe tipped over the two girls' canoe, dumping a familiar pink haired head underwater.
"Haha, the two new campers got dunked!" someone crowed. The Hermes boys towed the other girl's and Kaeyi's canoe to the beach, leaving the girls to swim to shore.
I got upset. I hated people picking on new kids.
"Can we go over to the Hermes' canoe? The one that dunked the girls underwater?" I asked Bo.
He grinned at me. "No problem at all, Zoeya."
In seconds, we were practically flying towards the other canoe. We slowed close to them. I turned and whispered into Bo's ear for a moment, then yelled at the two Hermes campers.
"You two just dunked my best friend, so let's see how you like being treated like the new kids!" I called.
Bo took the signal and pushed us forward. I helped him, dunking the two boys into the lake.
"Hey, no fair!" one of them called back, swimming towards us.
"If that's not fair, then was it fair to tip Kaeyi and her friend underwater?" I asked. I snagged the boy's canoe and Bo paddled us towards where Kaeyi and the dark-haired girl were swimming for shore.
"Climb in! We'll hold it steady!" Bo said. They didn't need to be told twice. After a few attempts, both girls were in the canoe, thankfully with their paddles from their first canoe.
"Thanks, Zoeya!" Said Kaeyi, shivering. Her pink hair was plastered against her head from water, but she still smiled.
"The sun will dry us off soon enough." The dark-haired girl said. Her pink tank top was soaked, as was her black miniskirt-or was it a skort?
"No prob, sis." Bo addressed the dark-haired girl.
"Hey, we should race!" I said. "Last pair to the far side and back to this shore are… I don't know, let's just have fun!"
We took off across the lake, laughing and teasing, the sun on our faces.
I just wished we had Rythian and Teep with us.
A happy ending for now… next, Capture the Flag!
Shall I quote Fanus Obscurus' review?
"Oh gods, let the total insanity begin!"
Yes, it shall. ;)
So, a little spoiler: One of the girl OCs will join the Hunters later on. Who do you peeps think it will be?
Also: who do you think Zoeya's, Sips', and Parv's godly parents will be?
Let me know!
